In 8 years my Maine Coon has never had any litterbox issues or problems with getting poop on her backend. She also is not obsessed with food or a messy eater. She does shed but her fur is super silky and rarely knots but that may be due to her diet and daily combing and brushing. She gets organic canned food in the morning with cbd oil and bone broth and a bowl of freeze dried food for free feeding during during the day. She is super affectionate and her 2 dog sisters and I find her a joy to share a home with.
My Maine Coons do not have any litter box issues either. My little girl used to get a foot bath occasionally when she was a kitten. I just switched to a pellet litter and no more issue.
You guys are lucky! Molly was terrible about this the first year we had her but now that she’s older she’s so much better. She rarely gets poop on herself now.
How about when my mainecoon was around 1 year old (he's 4 now) two different times I found evidence of where he tried to clean his own litter box!!! I scoop the litter boxes and put everything in plastic shopping bags that I save for that reason. And I keep them close to the litter box on a shelf... 2 different times I saw a single plastic bag inside the litter box and where Mister did his business in them!!! All I had to do was just grab the bag and throw away.... if only he did that all the time!!! But still, him just doing that was very impressive
I had to laugh at some of these; talkative, yes; demanding, no ignoring a Maine Coon; messy eater; and of course, hair everywhere. My cat wasn’t messy in the box as far as stepping in his own poo, but would get energetic with the digging.Like you, I loved him like crazy and miss him. He was with me through his dad’s ALS and passing, such a comfort.
Firstly, I'm so sorry for your loss Gayle 🙏😔. I also had a couple of laughs with this video, they really are unique cats and very high maintenance! I've always had cats and they enter your heart and fill and comfort you through the worst periods of your life. Totally agree that there is no way you can ignore a Maine Coon 😂 take care Gayle. Best wishes Tiffany 💙💙
We have the same issue with our Maine Coon. He digs and digs in the box like it's his job and flings it all over the laundry room. I literally clean that floor every single day because he goes at it with such force. What in the world? My run-of-the-mill tomcat does the same thing. It's insane.
I’m sorry for your loss. I miss my Coon kitty almost as much as I miss my mom, not quite but almost. I think that’s how close we get to our pets. My mom was my best friend. I hope you recover and remember good times with your husband and your Coon cat.
I have one thing I just wanna type; My Maine Coons, (I only have two) have one more con to add on (this might be with them only) is that- in the middle of the night, they will run through the hallways, nails out, because they turn, and twist, and whatever and the screeching noises are just TERRIBLE, though, and they do meow, but on of them is a male, particularly large (VERY large) (he is almost 5 months old, as is our other Maine Coon is, too) and he is much bigger than his sister, who is the size of the average kitten, and so he will wrestle with her, but it does not really hurt as much with him, so she will meow, though, she is not very vocal, but, her meows are like, so so, SO quiet you can just barely hear them, as if they are just tiny squeaks. Also. One con about our kittens is that they don’t make a mess with poop, though, they DEFINITELY will beg for food (only the male, since he is VERY vocal :)) Okay, that is it. I hope you see it! Bye!
I've had my Maine Coon kitten for just a week, and he's already stepped in his own poop twice! But he's worth every second of hassle. Such a sweet, lovey, playful boy.
I have an 11 month old Maine Coon named Zoe and she has a lot of the same habits as your Maine Coons; especially regarding being vocal, demanding, and shedding a lot. She was messy with her litter box until I got her a king sized litter box, but now she’s much better. She only steps in her poop every now and again. I also started giving her sanitary trims which has helped a lot too. In fact, I actually shaved the area around her butt with pet clippers after working up a lot of nerve 😅 I only have one Maine Coon, but she keeps me plenty busy. I can’t imagine what it’s like to have 3, but eventually I will get another one.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I don’t have a Maine coon, and I have realized I have no business owning a big cat. I have a domestic long hair IndyRed, he will soon be 16 and he has had 3 near death events. Most people do not realize vet expenses beyond the check ups, shots, and birth control.
Maine coons are really the sweetest pet you could imagine. I was never a cat person but I ended up with mine because he was afraid of people and couldn't be adopted. He came out of his kennel and sat right next to me. I am so happy I met him. They really are very, very mellow. The size really has no bearing on having one. They are so calm and easy going you'd really be surprised. And they don't have many health problems.
I have had my big guy for a long time. I couldn't ever find 12 negative things. He's the sweetest pet I've ever had. He does yowl when I sleep to long. Seriously, that's the only annoying thing he's ever done.
I appreciate the disclaimer in the beginning of the video. I have two MC’s no messy poops here and neither of them knot or shed much. I do put their food bowls inside a galvanized tray to catch the overspill that happens when they eat.
Hahaha! My wife and I have been staff to many of furry ones in our 38 years of marriage. They all have their individual personalities but it's worth every minute of it. Love them.
All the cons you mention are acceptable by me I too old for cats three main coon and one rescue three boys and a girl they’re like children I raised two sons and they were just as much trouble to maintain and not always as much fun as having the kitties around. My cats all lived 20 years and that was due to my wife “the Cat Whisperer” who knew cats; she even cared for all the neighborhood feral cats( numbering 15) as well. I cleaned the litter box daily and helped with the other chores but it never seemed a burden they were our children and when they passed I mourn them even still to this day along with the passing of wife in 2017. I miss them terribly cause we were a family. Their names were Scoobie, Otis, Spike and Squish I’ll never forget them.
I recently lost my guy and you are right it is devastating. He was not a purebred but about 75% given to me by a friend who also recently passed. I was not a cat person until this guy. He was only six but what a companion he became.. You are right they will not allow you to do anything and they are so nosy! He quickly bonded with my Golden Retriever.. It is heartbreaking to see her look for him.. Anyway they are an extraordinary cat.. I had no idea about Maine Coons at the time and just thought he was an extremely special cat.. It helps me heal to watch your videos and thank you so much for posting.. I am absolutely sure I will get another in time..
Thank you.. I decided to try to find another since it looks like it's quite a waiting list.. Trying to find a decent breeder at a decent price is a nightmare! You have any suggestions please let me know!
Haha they so know you’re talking about them and your tone 😂. I have a cat that has some Maine Coon I think ...she is the messiest eater, literally she tosses her head and it’s all over the place...she will only eat finely chopped soup with meat or hard biscuits, go figure. Aww and she’s so chatty, and so close to words...it’s I can’t eat anymore, I’ve finished and I’m off, where do you think you’re going 🤣. She’s more chatty since her hubby sadly died a couple of years ago. She is big (nose to tail) I made her a throne bed, she is a queen. I love her to pieces...she’s sassy, brave (fought hard to overcome, deal with a stroke and arthritis), chatty, affectionate, very gentle, fun, so much character. When I found her after the stroke, she couldn’t walk. I was devastated. Rang the vets, as I picked her up to bring her there, she purred and looked at me with pure love...how amazing are they 💔❤️ she honestly inspires me. Vets were fantastic, she was walking within two weeks. I’m so grateful for every day she’s here ❤️
Riley, my Maine Coon mix rescue, never had the poop issue, but did have the fur and enlarged heart birth defect, which killed him at 13 yo. Riley was an 18# (not obese-all muscle) baby, who loved to lay in my arms like a baby.
I had a very hard time finding a litter box big enough for my MC. I ended up getting a mortar mixing tray at the hardware store. They have curved corners at each end which makes them ideal for scooping and they are very cheap! My kitty also has a favorite kitchen cabinet that she likes to go in!
Thank you so much for your honesty and transparency! Too often social media only shows the best highlights of everything. It is obvious how much you love your cats- but life is not perfect! We are lucky to share our lives with them - the fur everywhere is the biggest con for us but of course we just buy more lint rollers lol 😆
Thank you for this! I lost my "little" Hobbes a couple of years ago. He looked just like Molly. I didnt have to pay quite that much for him bc he was the runt of the litter, had half a tail that ended in a 90°angle, and only had one nostril (that softly whistled when he slept). He was quite the character tho. He loved walking on a leash and dust baths, and would go to the door like a dog and sit, wagging his tail while I answered it. The two medical issues he ever had was an extreme allergy to anything but Iams and kidney disease that took him at age 15. About litterboxes, I was lucky that he wasn't messy with poop, but his favorite bathroom game was to scoop up a pawful of litter and fling it just as far as he could, and he refused to use covered boxes... Much love from a new sub in Oklahoma!😻
Regarding Points No. 3 and No. 4: All Maine Coons are obsessed with water. Ours paws at the floor, like when covering litter, next to his large water bowl, and meows and cackles, and then slaps the water before drinking. We put a towel under his water and food bowl. We leave a bathtub filled with a couple inches of water for him to play in. And he does. He jumps in and slaps at the water while cackling. On food, one has to be sure the food is proper Maine Coon food, not just regular cat food. Maine Coons are larger with much more robust skeletal and musculature. This requires a lot more protein. If you find that your Maine Coon is pooping 2-3 times a day, you may wish to switch foods and the food provided has too much cellulose which is useless filler. A Maine Coon with good, nutritious food should poop once a day, maybe twice. Free eating is recommended if they do not put on much weight from it. A nightly goodly handful of either raw beef or seafood, or steamed, and 1-2 tins of non-tuna wet food well supplements the dry food and gives them lots of good protein (and moisture). The Maine Coons should not get fat from this high-protein, low carb and cellulose diet.
I had two Maine Coon males, one of them was so sweet, playful, and loving (he lived to 15... I miss him so much! Wish I had 20 of him!!) His brother, the one who we still have (16), is a grumpy mess. Don't get me wrong, he loves to snuggle next to us, loves to play, and loves to be pet... but, if he is not in the mood... GRUMPY! All of the cons you mentioned are spot on :).
Try a plate or very shallow dish. If the dish is a bit too deep, their whiskers touch the sides or rim, and cats don't like that, so they'll put the food on the floor to avoid whisker irritation.
@@xyzct She eats wet food off my butter plates. Can't get much flatter than that. Admit the dry food bowl is a bowl but I think it's a decent size diameter. She shakes her head when she eats her dry food (that's the main messy culprit). i watched to see what was going on. I guess she thinks it's actual prey she has to kill. Who the heck knows. It's in the kitchen so no biggie. She even has her own placemat that I wish I could replace but I don't think Laurel Burch makes these any longer.
Molly and Luna are so beautiful as are all your cats. My cat Lily is half Maine coon although she looks like a full Maine coon just smaller because she is female too. I do empathise with you over the fur, Lily’s fur gets everywhere, on the carpet, my curtains because she loves to sit on windowsills and because she likes cuddles all over me even up my nose! Drives me insane, but I love her to bits. However she is not a messy eater and keeps herself very clean. When you said about your cats chirping I know what you mean, they never stop talking and answer back! 😻💜
Finally a video about the real things about Maine Coons, not just how wonderful they are, this is the first video I've seen that said the bad things about them, I had assumed some of the things on your list, had no idea about the litter box habits and the food habits, very good video very informative thanks, gives me more to think about later when/if I decide to get one
You’re welcome! That’s the main reason I made this video! It’s important to not only talk about the good stuff. Nobody’s perfect but it’s important to know what you’re getting into. I wish there’d been a video like this on UA-cam before we got our Maine Coons 😺
This is super interesting bc our 2 Maine Coone's are not like this. They are European Maine Coons, from Ukraine. I'm not sure if it matters, but ours are almost the exact opposite. (this is not disparaging this excellent video, just noting that ours are different). Most important, I love love love our Maine Coons. MC's are the BEST cats ever. 1 - poop. Ours are very tidy, but spray litter outside of the litter box. Easily solved with daily vacuuming. 2 - fur - they shed in clumps/tufts, different from an ASH which sheds everywhere. I never notice their fur other than the clumps. Again, easily solved with daily vacuuming. Our MCs' fur never get knots but it can get a bit oily. We have literally never brushed them but we do wash them about 2x per month bc of the oil. They spend a good part of their day grooming themselves (including their privates) so we don't have to worry much, 3 - Eating - Our cats are very tidy eaters, never leaving a mess. But boy do they enjoy eating. 4 - Food - they chirp and trill at feeding time (which I love) but are otherwise fine. Our female MC (also Luna) jumps up on the dinner table and (poorly) tries to steal any kind of meat, but again this is typical for most cats. They love milk and treats. Our orange male (Simba) often chirps for milk, but isn't too fussed if he doesn't get it. 5 - Chirping - they talk a lot, but not loudly and not excessively. I love it, and it's one of the most unique and endearing traits of this breed. They will chirp when they are hungry, when they are bored or want attention, when they want a tummy rub, when they want to go outside, when they want you to feed them in the morning, and so on. 6 - Our MC's are really relaxed and not demanding. They just do their thing. Except at 6am when they wake you up to feed them. We have two and they get along well. They play together, and snuggle up at night. Definitely recommend getting 2. Twice the fun! 7 - Big Things - our MC's use a regular sized litter box. We have lots of shelves, and they like to sit up high and survey. They love to sit looking out windows. We have a large carrier for both of them, easily solved on Amazon. 8 - Leaving them alone - there are 2 of them, so they just hang out together and we have no issues with going away for a day or even 2 (ample food and water are a must of course). Again, definitely recommend having 2; Solves all these problems. 9 - Mischievous - Agreed. Our MC's are smart enough to open doors (really!) and cupboards. They are incredibly curious and just love /anything new/ - esp boxes. 10 - Claws - Agreed; ours are really, really good about not using them while playing. If you push them too far they will scratch just like any cat. Their claws are built for hunting prey, so they are very long and very sharp. My daughter roughhouses with the (22 lb) male all the time but he only scratches her maybe once a year. (and it's her own fault) They do scratch the furniture, solved with a blanket or sofa cover. 11 - Price - yes. Go to a reputable breeder, who will provide pedigree documents. Ours were $1500 each. 12 - They tend to live 12-15 years, but they are delicate cats. Get a purebred. Look for lynx tips, almond eyes, long whiskers, manes, fluffy tails as long as their body, fur between their toes, and a fluffy set of "ski pants" around their privates - all designed to keep them safe in harsh winters Other things - MC's can be prone to stomach issues, so you may need to find just the right food for them. - Daily vacuuming is a must - They looooove toys, especially anything that looks like a bug or rodent. - MC's drink a LOT of water - Each of them have their own very distinct personality, just like children - Males are WAY WAY bigger then females. Like, 25 lbs vs 12. Get a male if you want an Internet worthy MC. - Males often look grumpy, but are not at all. They really are the best cats ever. They are independent and loyal, funny, super smart, playful and sleep close to their people, but not too close. They trill and chirp in 5-10 different ways which tells you exactly what they want, including one that sounds and means like a question.
I think both cats and dogs should be fed as much real food as possible, if for no other reason than increased life expectancy. I've heard that change alone will add a couple of years, which is a lot for an animal expected to live about a dozen or little more years.
Those may seem like tough cons to deal with, but I survived them all with Hey. Matter of fact, I remember very well on some really warm days when I was in High School Hey shedded his fur that when he socialized with me briefly before I caught the bus, I brought some of his shedded fur with me, as it stuck on my shirt and pants. Yeah, every night at dinner, Hey often got to the seat that Dad usually took, at least until Dad "joined Hey's seat", lol. I'll never forget how cute Hey was poking his head above the table between Mom and Dad, who would often give them a piece of whatever we were eating. Hey loved turkey, therefore when Dad smoked turkey, he would come over to see him! Even now, I still remember Hey's cute meowing very well, and I can easily play it in my head like an audio file on a music player. When it came to hunger, Hey usually would get attention just to let us know that he was hungry. He did this by clawing the furniture, knowing that someone who saw him do this would tell him to stop. Another method of telling us when he was hungry was that when we were eating, Hey would bite people's legs. This often happened to Mom, but he did it to me too. Interesting, bigger cats need bigger means of entertainment! So, cats CAN outgrow Hot Wheels cars, literally! Don't worry, I have some bigger scale model cars to keep them entertained! For example, my Radio Controlled Fresh Cherries 1977 AMC Pacer hatchback (the very car that I have named my UA-cam channel after when I started in May 2007!) is 1/16 Scale, which makes for very large cat entertainment! I just gotta apply some catnip scent to it, and the bigger cats will go nuts over it!! Yeah, I truly miss Hey so much, and in fact, I have been kicking around the idea of getting 2 Maine Coon cats so they can keep each other company while I'm away somewhere. For the 2 cat plan, I have been thinking about naming one of my 2 Maine Coon cats "Mongoose" and the other "Snake", named after the drag racing cars driven by Tom McEwen and Don Prudhomme, respectively. To correspond to the colors of each drag racer, I plan on having Mongoose wear a red collar, while Snake would have a yellow collar. Hey was the closest my family had ever been to actually owning a tiger, as Hey seemed to be like a killer or something when he was riled up. Often times I would only tackle him if I were wearing fireplace gloves, as they protected my hand from Hey's claws and teeth like armor. I truly miss Hey, he was a great cat! Despite the cons, if I had my time over, I'd enjoy all my time with Hey again!
I absolutely loved 💜 this video, it was great. All of the cons are true it's crazy. Baby is now my messiest eater while Maddie has become picky & I'm stuck trying so many different brands pleading with her to eat, snacks started it aye, aye, aye... 🐾💕 Happy Funday 💞
Our MC is so similar to Molly! The exact same colors all the way! He is 18 months now, walking free in and out of the apartment in Oslo (pet door). (Area with houses with gardens and not much traffic) In the beginning we had a harness with gps on him, but now he rarely has that. His radius is quite wide, actually. At night, that is. :D At daytime he is inside sleeping...
On Point No. 2: They should only require a light 20 second brushing daily and weekly deep brush with a metal pet brush. Each proper brushing should yield a goodly handful of their undercoat fur. That should keep much of the fur from finding its way to your furniture and clothes.
I just got a two-year-old female Maine coon from the pound today. I couldn't believe it when I saw her I was like who would give away their Maine Coon. you never see them in the pound you hardly ever even see them in the pet store I pick her up tomorrow God willing it so excited. I plan on getting another cat in a few weeks so she won't be alone they wouldn't let me get to the same day
.. Oh boy.. It could have been my male MC you just described 😳😅 I started out with a female Harlekin MC, but being alone is not for Mc's.. They will become depressed and will eventually die of loneliness.. So I got 2 young boys after about 7 months to keep her company when she became depressed and sad, and that did the trick.. Unfortunately she died from cancer 2 years later.. I then had the boys Jamie and Max.. Jamie was huge twice the size of Max (he's deaf which is why I could have him), and the sweetest and most gentle giant ever born.. He was diagnosed with heart problems age 4, but that was never a problem.. Unfortunately he died a year later from sudden kidney failure, 5 years old.. That was the worst day of my life.. He died in the transport box, on the back seat in the car on the rush to the vet, screaming terrified in pain.. I brought him back home with mee, and Max who had been sleeping all the time, knew nothing of what had happened.. I left Jamie still in the box, on my garden table, and Max jumped up to see his "brother" and best friend, begging him to wake up.. But he didn't and when Max stood up I could see on his face that he knew Jamie was gone.. It broke my heart.. I had taken pictures of the scene, thinking that nobody would ever believe mee saying that cats can feel grief.. Max went hiding in my son's room and I buried Jamie on his favorite spot in the garden.. A week later I had a 12 week old girl, Ava, to Max, and she reminds mee of Jamie every day, only not as big.. She prevented Max from dying of grief.. Her coat is like Jamie's, so easy to groom, she's never messy eating or messy using the litter box (she's 5 years old).. Max mess up the intire bathroom when out there and the kitchen when eating.. I excuse him as being a boy, although he's about 10 years old.. Only he still think he's 10 months.. He brings back the intire garden to the house, Ava leaves it out there.. They both keeps mee company in the bathroom, even when I shower.. They help mee water my 100 plants, clean the bed and the house, but they hate the vacuum cleaner.. While Max doesn't care about birds, butterflies, flies, spiders and other creaping insects Ava catches anything and everything.. It is her way of fun (we do not agree on the butterflies and the birds).. Every minute of the day they are loving and loyal, to mee.. To strangers they are suspicious and distant, until they get to know people, on their own terms.. Max loves his brush, like 2 minutes at the time once a week.. Ava loves it every minute of the day.. I've got fur in every corner of my house, no matter how much cleaning I do.. As a dancer I used to be away from home for a week once a year (other times would only be a day), but they were not eating when I wasn't home, despite a babysitter, the past two years I've been home constantly.. But I love them to pieces and like Max is still looking for Jamie every now and then, I still miss him too..
Some of these cons I don't get from my maincoon such as the messy bottom. His Siberian brothers get that problem a lot. He also isn't messy in his litter box but he sometimes has trouble burying his poop so his brothers come in behind and help. Which is funny because he is older than them. Otherwise I know what you mean. The fur, attention damands, talking, messy waters, but I love my buddy kitty.
Very informative! Thank you for sharing! Good to know, and how special your cats are to you inspite of the cons. Your.cats are blessed to have such a great home!.
My kitten is rather clean when doing her business in the litter box but she likes to take a flying start from it when she's done a really nice job in it so the litter flies everywhere :-)
I’ve had my two Maine Coon kittens for a week today (and they’re 15 weeks old today!), and I’m watching this video of yours and agreeing with everything! I haven’t decided on names yet, but one is a black tabby who looks a bit like Molly (though less white in her coat and no white socks, and instead of Molly’s incredible green eyes, she has beautiful golden brown eyes that bring out some of the warm golden tones in her face stripes), and the other a red tabby boy, with something of a wise and knowing gaze that reminds me a bit of Albus (and he hasn’t met a spider yet, but he does talk to moths, and it’s the cutest thing in the world!). On day 1 my girl straight away demonstrated the poo problem! I assume due to the stress of leaving her kitten-home and all that was familiar, then spending 2 hours in the car to come home with me, she had some very liquidy poo that she immediately stepped in, and the same again the following morning! I definitely regretted not yet buying some pet wipes to have on hand 😬 The boy in particularly loves playing with water - I’ve put a water bowl in the bathroom specifically because I’ve watched him just put his paw in and flick it around for fun (but then act indignant to find that his feet are wet!). They’re messy with food too but not as bad as the water situation where I found a huge puddle around their fountain and it splashed all the way up the wall. We’re on a quest to find the right kind of bowls they both like - the first ones I had were small and shallow but straight sided (and another that was deeper and larger but similarly shaped) and my girl in particular didn’t seem to like putting her face in them, and would hook out biscuits with her paw to eat from the floor. I tried a few plates and shallow wide pasta bowls I had at home while waiting for new ones to arrive, and they seemed to go down better… except she’s only little and would end up standing on it with her front paws when the bowl was less full, and it moving under her and making a noise when it came back down wasn’t making her happy either. I thought I’d found a universal winner with this wide and shallow ceramic one from “ComSaf” on Amazon, but only after the second one arrived, my boycat decided he doesn’t love it after all, and pulls out his wet food to eat from the floor. It’s an ongoing quest!
Except getting poo everywhere, everything you've said is true about food. And yes they talk a lot. Also they want ur attention and get mad if I don't give it right away. They do have big claws. If they play hard they can hurt u if they accidentally hit u with their claws ouch. I love mine too probably too much
I experienced the same with my Maine Coon about the obsession with food. But I think it's about how he grew up with many many cats and his siblings. Maybe he didn't get enough food and had to fight for it. We have food 24/7h. Fresh and dry. Meat and catfood. He still knows when I cook and begs for food and always wants to try everything we eat. He has gotten way better since we have him, but he is still more obsessed with food in comparison with our other cats.
I have one Maine coon and one ragdoll. My Ragdoll will sniff at the food dish and daintily eat. My Maine coon begs, follows me around and then devours the food as soon as it hits the bowl like I didn’t just feed him that morning.
Hip dysplasia is horrible!! I had to put down My German Shepherd last year because after seeing his X-rays, we saw that the ball joint was almost completely out of the hip socket and he was in severe pain. The same thing happened to my female Shepherd in 2017. They both had to be put down due to the severe pain and immobility that they suffered through. It was heartbreaking!!!
Their is lots of cons BUT i feel like there is more pros! Since maine coons are such a amazing cat breed! Also Luna is such i really really pretty girl! I do have some cons on my cat Colbalt! :))
I also thought it was strange when my Coon did not groom herself as much as my alley cats and Siamese and she doesn't purr. When I asked the vet she said some MC are born without a structure in their throat that causes the actual sound instead you just hear her breathing in and out as a purr. YES THEY HAVE BIG STRONG CLAWS and don't realize this! Get your cats DNA test and not the basepaws use wisdom they test for about 30 inherited conditions my vet advised this because of the lack of purr structure and her coloring mean she is already exhibiting some mutations. Luna is getting really big now!
I just found your channel-- Maine Coons are the best! Where did you get that cat tower? Its brilliant, especially for our Gentle Giants!! Well done, you! 🤎
All of this is true and more. They can also be distructive. I have one that likes to smash everything to the floor....even pictures on the wall if he can reach them.
I got my Maine Coon kitten a week ago, and my breeder recommended a diet of both wet and dry. Really the most important thing is to try and go grain-free (I do Purina Pro Plan). A small can of wet lasts four days for me, since he only eats about a quarter a day, but he does eat a lot of dry.
We feed our cats grain free dry food 24/7 and they get wet food 1-2x a day. The dry food is good for their teeth and the wet food keeps them hydrated. I’ve heard raw is best but we haven’t tried it.
Rosemary Kendall - Maine Coon Owners guide from kitten to old age. Really good book for new, old, and in between er owner's. Like any breed of animal. You need to understand the history and normal behaviour of your breed. We have a rough collie (Lassie but a lot more dopey) she also has a 2 layer coat ie she has to be brushed from bottom to top. So grooming a Maine Coon cat (after about 1 year old) is the same. Maine Coon are renowned hunters and must have 3 types of food dry, wet packet (high protein) and fish/chicken/turkey. They LOVE playing in water so get a water fountain placed on towel and their need for play and plenty of water will be covered without you breaking your back! 😂 Hope this helps ps. No tuna or very little (like twice a year as they have high levels of Mercury in them naturally Maine Coon's & many other pure breeds cannot handle it. Surprisingly tho they love tin sardines in tomato sauce! Weird I know but my vet said nothing in there to harm him 👍😁
My Maine Coon is 17 yrs old. The biggest con is they don't live forever. Ziggy has been my best friend and my most favorite cat of all time. He had a cancerous mass removed from under his tongue two years ago. Sadly, the cancer has returned. I can't put him through another surgery like the last - it took him six months to learn how to use his tongue again. So my boy has about 3-6 months. I'm going to make them the best months of his life. I love him enough to let him go. 💔😭
omg Molly's getting so big wished i could hug her lunas looking good though and yeah my moms gfs maine coon can be a bit aggressive with somethings and only hisses to protect the house and Molly believe it or not is a bit like Shelby my aunts tabby personality wise lol keep up the greatness
Scammers, yup. I was setting up getting a kitten... until I got suspicious of their "delivery service". Supposedly someone would bring them right to my door! Awesome, eh? But when they said they took only Apple pay and would NOT give me a phone number to discuss getting the kitten, I did a web search and found they were famous for this set-up. Scumbags!!! Do you have someone you could recommend for a kitten? It will be a one cat house ($$$$$) with only me to serve it. Appreciate and info you can pass along!! As you said, it IS hard finding someone with kittens for sale!!!
I need some advice, we adopted our cat Daniel from a shelter last week. (adult neutered male, 5 years old). I am 99% sure he is a Maine Coon (though the shelter called him just a long haired cat). He has adjusted very well, however he has been really vocal at night. When we are trying to sleep he doesn't stop meowing... He's been to the vet and has no health issues and is healthy. We got him toys and make sure his needs are always met. We can only get him to stop when we call him to get in the bed with us but he wont stay there long. I think maybe he's just having anxiety because he was used to being around many other cats at the shelter and he's the only pet we have. Do you recommend maybe getting him a kitty companion?
In my opinion it sounds like it could be a few things. Most cats don’t like change. He needs time to get used to his new home. A week isn’t very long. I think it’s always better having at least two cats so they can have each other when you’re not around, but it depends on the situation. Your cat could just be lonely, scared, or hungry. Our Molly meows almost every night for us and it’s because she’s a very demanding cat. Our other cats can be vocal at night too, but Molly is the worst. She’s always snuggling on us and she needs constant attention. So it’s possible your guy is just very needy. We have three other cats but that doesn’t stop Molly from being vocal almost every night. But all cats are different. Those are just my thoughts. I hope he’s doing better now!
Is 3500 way too expensive? I’m still considering it I just feel these people are the most trusted cattery i can find in Washington plus they don’t have a waiting list anymore and do a first come first serve type of deal. Look up coon kingdom and tell me how there kittens that are for sale look if you have the chance please.
I would say yes that is too expensive… but if the cattery has everything you’re looking for then they may be worth the price. You will save money in the long run getting a kitten from a responsible breeder, trust me. Ask for references, read reviews, and try to FaceTime them to see the kittens if you can. Please be careful of scammers!
We had to have 5 boxes for 4 cats. Then the litter problem mostly resolved. They are kind of like cats with ADHD, like my son who forgets to flush, yeah loving and messy!
Your main coons are doing there there own check list ummm I think we are amazing 😽 give us attention 😽poop and wee 😽give us lots of food 😽we love to talk and mum and dad lovvvve it😽 we have our own Scratch trees but we claw up the furniture 😽😻 yip so pretty perfect 👌😻❤️
I have never ever had any of my 3 mainecoons step on their poop or messy they are super super clean
Thank you. Maine Coons are special. I never knew until I had one.
They really are the huskies of the cat kingdom😅
Cats are superior to dogs. Don't compare.
Very talkative similarities 😅😭
But quieter
These guys are the best breed of cats on earth. Your video did them justice; those are indeed legitimate complaints with them.
Thank you! They are amazing cats!
Sorry for all your losses. You must have been blessed to have lived such a fulfilling life.
I’m going to pick up my Maine coon this weekend. Your videos have been so useful and informative! I definitely know what to expect now :)
Congratulations and thank you for your kind words and for watching our videos! It means a lot!
So sorry to hear about your guy and thank you so much for watching our videos. It means a lot ❤️
Luna's extra long hair is so beautiful. 😀
Thank you! I love it ❤️
Thank you for this!
Lol their facial expressions after some of the cons, like why is she telling all of our business.....humans. They are beautiful.
😹😹🙈
Sorry for your loss. They are all different that’s for sure. Luna is our “moody” one. She has to be in the mood or else... 😹😼
My cat is a messy eater and a beggar, too, especially for treats. She loves attention and wants me to play with her all the time.
Lol. Molly was acting like an owl in the beginning
She’s a weird one 😹❤️
Agreed, some issues I can handle, others not so much. We'll see.
They spend a good part of their day grooming themselves (including their privates) so we don't have to worry much,
3 - Eating - Our cats are very tidy eaters, never leaving a mess.
Look for lynx tips, almond eyes, long whiskers, manes, fluffy tails as long as their body, fur between their toes, and a fluffy set of "ski pants" around their privates - all designed to keep them safe in harsh winters
Other things
- MC's can be prone to stomach issues, so you may need to find just the right food for them.
- Daily vacuuming is a must
- They looooove toys, especially anything that looks like a bug or rodent.
- MC's drink a LOT of water
- Each of them have their own very distinct personality, just like children
- Males are WAY WAY bigger then females.
Our cats were always hungry until we started giving them actual real meat!!!! Now they are satisfied!
I think both cats and dogs should be fed as much real food as possible, if for no other reason than increased life expectancy. I've heard that change alone will add a couple of years, which is a lot for an animal expected to live about a dozen or little more years.
Our tabby kitten is CONSTANTLY begging for food, lol. But our siamese manx is different, he's chill & just want to do just that... chill
you should keep sharing your subscribers maine coons! I like seeing them. Thanks for the vid! x
Sorry, we were distracted by Molly and Luna's cuteness in the background 😹 They are purrfect in our eyes! Of course Annie and Albus too! ♥
(Area with houses with gardens and not much traffic)
In the beginning we had a harness with gps on him, but now he rarely has that.
His radius is quite wide, actually. At night, that is. :D
At daytime he is inside sleeping...
I plan on getting another cat in a few weeks so she won't be alone they wouldn't let me get to the same day
Thanks for the reality video. You'd think with all the typical Maine Coon videos out there that these cats were the perfect pet. Guess not.
Everything you said about your cats, mine do as well. You just made my day, as I was thinking that he was massive hehehe but I love him to death
meowing and staring at food? My cats steal from the plate 🙈
Ours do too when we’re not looking 👀
Some of these cons I don't get from my maincoon such as the messy bottom. His Siberian brothers get that problem a lot. He also isn't messy in his litter box but he sometimes has trouble burying his poop so his brothers come in behind and help. Which is funny because he is older than them. Otherwise I know what you mean. The fur, attention damands, talking, messy waters, but I love my buddy kitty.
Mine loves digging a lot in the litterbox, but definitely not too messy. Thankfully mine isn't food obsessive but loves talking.
Very informative! Thank you for sharing! Good to know, and how special your cats are to you inspite of the cons. Your.cats are blessed to have such a great home!.
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching! ❤️
With decades of experience with cats, you can get them together for only one reason-feeding time!
I definitely regretted not yet buying some pet wipes to have on hand 😬
The boy in particularly loves playing with water - I’ve put a water bowl in the bathroom specifically because I’ve watched him just put his paw in and flick it around for fun (but then act indignant to find that his feet are wet!).
I love mine too probably too much
Thanks for the pointers!
So sorry to hear that ❤️
Love your video, everything is so true, love my main coons too they are awesome cats
Thank you!
Their is lots of cons BUT i feel like there is more pros! Since maine coons are such a amazing cat breed!
Also Luna is such i really really pretty girl! I do have some cons on my cat Colbalt! :))
We have Maine coon mixes. It's almost the same at our house 🥰
I really like the cat beds/tower that they are sleeping on in this video. Where did you get it?😊
It’s from Cat Tree King.
The sweetest video ever
My kitties are messy eater messy pooper but I love them to death
I just found your channel-- Maine Coons are the best! Where did you get that cat tower? Its brilliant, especially for our Gentle Giants!! Well done, you! 🤎
Thank you! Their cat tree is from Cat Tree King.
@@lifewithmainecooncats Ah. Cheers, thank you!!
You’re welcome!
@@lifewithmainecooncats 💕🐾
One of mine loves to sleep on my pillow draped around my head. The other is at my feet. Both are 18 pounds.
I love my cat. Squeekers is a mix of a silver tabby but I think has more qualities of a Maine coon.
Excellent presentation !!
Hey! Where did you get that cat tree? I’m looking to get a bigger one for my lovely mainecoone, as she’s a big girl now!!
It’s from Cat Tree King!
@@lifewithmainecooncats yess thank you!! Do y’all have an Instagram!?
You’re welcome! Yes we do! Search “Life with Maine Coon Cats” 😺
We have two Maincoons and a lynx point Siamese
Thanks for sharing. Ironically, they are sitting there looking so innocent, as if to say, you’re making up these cons.
😹😹🙊
Thanks!
All of this is true and more. They can also be distructive. I have one that likes to smash everything to the floor....even pictures on the wall if he can reach them.
Annie(?) Is such a Goody Two Shoes. Do the Maine Coon Cats beat her up?🤣
No, Annie is definitely the boss in our house! 😹 She’s a tough one. 😼
Love the Black Catking!
Any recommendations on feeding Maine coon Kittens? Seems to be a large debate. Wet , dry both etc.
I agree grain free is the way to go and I use both wet and dry but I save the wet for dinner
Weird I know but my vet said nothing in there to harm him 👍😁
Wow , thanks for all the responses 😀 👍. Just took him in today for his booster. 12 weeks old lil over 3lbs , eyes , ears all healthy lil boy 😺
Where did you get your cat tree? Love it.
Thank you! It’s from Cat Tree King.
Annie is a rock star 😂
My Maine Coon is 17 yrs old. The biggest con is they don't live forever. Ziggy has been my best friend and my most favorite cat of all time. He had a cancerous mass removed from under his tongue two years ago. Sadly, the cancer has returned. I can't put him through another surgery like the last - it took him six months to learn how to use his tongue again. So my boy has about 3-6 months. I'm going to make them the best months of his life. I love him enough to let him go. 💔😭
So sorry ❤️
Those poor starving kitty babies 😂😂
😹😹
Lol! All true but they are so worth it! I’m getting a Smoke Boy in the next month to pair with my Coon Shiloh who’s a tabby☺️☺️
Good information b4 I get a mainecoon.
Totally unrelated..
But l think you guys will make great parents ( if you so choose---) as you make such wonderful kitty parents😊😻
Aw thank you! 🥰
Are you using a scented litter?
Yes
omg Molly's getting so big wished i could hug her lunas looking good though and yeah my moms gfs maine coon can be a bit aggressive with somethings and only hisses to protect the house and Molly believe it or not is a bit like Shelby my aunts tabby personality wise lol keep up the greatness
Thank you!
anytime
I also have two Maine Coon🥰☺😍
Yes, get him a companion. My MC settled down when introduced her to my mom’s kitty. It doesn’t have to be a coon, but they love kitty company.
I am South Korean mother 🤗🤗🤗seeyou again 🙏
Very nice maine coon ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Where I can find that cat tree?
Cat Tree King!
@@lifewithmainecooncats thank you
Where did you get cat tree?
It’s from Cat Tree King.
YEP!!!!!!!
Mmmmmmwahhhhh u sacred precious cottony cuties! U r insanely soft!
Do all mainecoon cats like to walk outside? Like dogs?
It depends on the cat’s personality but ours do. And it helps to harness and leash train them when they’re young 🐾
They take up less room in a bed than a Burmese cat though.
$1000 wow that’s cheap! They are now $3500
Thx for the poop ref. Was going to adopt a 9yro this weekend, but... nope
I would imagine an older cat would be better about their 💩 than a kitten, but every cat is different.
@@lifewithmainecooncats tis true, but I'll check with the shelter again tomorrow
So.... basically just like dogs. Hehe.
Yes. Very much so!
I love mine coons 😸

I wonder, given all of these cons, is it humanly possible to take care of 4 Maine Coons if one has a small kid?! 😄
I would say yes!
@@lifewithmainecooncats Wow! Is that your personal experience? 🙂
We had to have 5 boxes for 4 cats. Then the litter problem mostly resolved. They are kind of like cats with ADHD, like my son who forgets to flush, yeah loving and messy!
Girlfriends-pretty girls!
