I want to point out that this method of introducing a new kitten should be used carefully. I know my older cats very well and they are very sweet and gentle. I was always ready to intervene if things would go out of hand. It is natural behaviour of Caesar to hiss and try to look scary in front of the others. The important thing is that they do not turn agressive and start to fight. It is not a method that I recommend everyone to use. For many other cats and kittens, a slower introduction might be better. My cat is the same, very sweet and good about giving new cats space. Depending how the new cat comes off I always start by giving the new one a small room to get comfy, then the house, then depending a baby gate or just let both out to interact. Usually takes 1 day and goes pretty fast : )
My gorgeous fur baby Tali is the most loving affectionate cat I have ever known and she adores people (and trust me I have known many cats), but she detests other animals with a passion. Or so I thought.... When moved in with my partner, she had two other cats and we had to figure out a way to keep them apart for a while before socialising (a stair gate that filed miserably). So we just gave up and said f**k it, let them figure it out. Within a few hours she was comfortable because we let her explore and made sure the other cats were reassured about this new entity.
It shouldn't be used, ever. Sad to see that you did it anyway, despite knowing better...To put the new kitten under that amount of stress just to get some more klicks on YT is simply despicable. Shame on you...🤢🤢🤢👎
Caesar is adorable! What a growl on him. He seemed to lose his fear quickly. I always comforted all my cats when a new member joined the family. No one was ever injured, except when my largest guy, Tyler, a 20 lb. tuxedo, scratched the nose of our Siberian Husky. The dog stayed away from Tyler from then on!!!

Apologies for the missing comment - the keyboard had a tantrum! I loved this meeting and the reactions of all the cats. I haven’t had much to do with cats apart from looking after a couple of strays once; one was reunited with her owner, and the other turned out to live two doors down and was after extra treats (she still visits). The reactions were fascinating - Buster looking a bit startled when Caesar yowled but soon regaining his customary unflappability, Freya asserting resident kitten rights and Luna staying calmly in the background. And such a lovely family group at the end - thank you for sharing, not to mention a deal of hard work behind the scenes.
Thank you! They really had fascinating reactions. I'm so happy and proud that they were so nice and gentle with the new kitten. This was a few days ago and now they act like they have lived together for years already 😁

Awesome! Buster scared Caesar with his huge size, Caesar played big boss but Buster couldn`t care less 😹 he`s far too relaxed. But Luna`s look at you "what have you done to me, hooman, how dare you?" 🙀 priceless! Good that Coonies are most times too relaxed to attack, they`re more like "who are you, can we be friends?" A piece of gold for Luna`s thoughts in this moment!
@@Maine_Coon_Kittens That was the look i got from Maya when she had to tell me what she want a more direct way because i didn`t understood her. Like as she wanted belly rubs the first time and i didn`t understood her, got her skin scratches and then i got that look before she grabbed my hand, leading it to her belly. It was her "are you really that stupid or just simulating" look. But she looked not angry like Luna. Luna gave you a more angry look, she`s the queen of the house like Buster is the king of the forest. And you forgot to ask Luna if another kitten would be welcome in her kingdom. But she will accept him as family member, maybe tell him her rules sometimes and scold him when he`s sassy.
Yeah, I know the look 😅 I should have asked her for permission first 😉 But she doesn't seem the mind having a new kitten here now. She is very curious about him and gives him a lick on the head sometimes when he's passing by 🙂
@@Maine_Coon_Kittens That`s a thing i love most about Coonies, they accept other cats very fast compared to other breeds. And Luna is a very loving cat, i bet she sees any smaller cat as her kitten that needs her care and protection 😻 My mixbreed Maxi showed it one day when a neighbours kitten ran into my apartment in panic from a loud slamming door. We couldn`t find the kitten fast, but then... Maxi on his side, licking his paws? He never does this! He was holding the little one with one paw, cuddling and licking him. My big "gangster" boy who never wanted to meet a stranger cat showed love for a 16 weeks old kitten short before his adoption day. My neighbour was always a little scared about Maxi because he looked like an old warrior and killer with his many scratches, wide head and crooked face. She was always sceptic when i told her that Maxi is the most friendly and loving cat i ever had, but now he had won her heart and she wanted to pet him. She asked me how he would react to her, and i told her that he soaks up every love and attention he could get. Maxi looked like a too big EKH or house cat with a wide head, but was at 9 kg, had huge Coonie paws and knew how to use them, and his tail was fluffy like Luna`s. And he had that sweet Maine Coon voice, chirping, trilling and cooing.
New kittens need a safe space they can retreat to. We used some of our bathrooms for that, full kitty layout ( food, litter, water ). And no guests until they were comfortable.
Look how big iam, i am dangerous Caesar trying to say 😂. So wonderful. Interesting how fast ceasar went exploring despite the permeating other cat smell. Gentle giants love them
At least, they need some days before being introduced: first, they will need to hear without seeing each other, after get used to smells, later to see each other from distance without real contact. Eventually snd little by little small encounters till arriving to mutual tolerance.
As soon as that tail went up it stayed! I’ve heard tail-up described as “confident and friendly”. In my experience (with my Maine Coons and my non-MCs) it means “Everything is mine. I require attention NOW!”
Generally speaking that was *not* a good introduction. Buster was a very good boy, he was not aggressive, he was not overly dominant, and his interaction with Caesar was basically just curiosity during the introduction followed by ignoring him. That was probably the best thing that could have happened there because he immediately told him "I am not a threat to you. This is my space but I am okay with you being in it." Immediately after, though, the first thing Freya does is stare Caesar down. That's saying "I don't know who you are, but you are in my territory." A staredown between two cats can be interpreted as an invitation to fight if neither of them back down, and thankfully around 5:50, Caesar chooses to do so himself. Even so, that could have gone very very differently if Caesar attempted a dominance display, and it looks like at around 6:00 that you can see him shivering as he lays down, which means that he was pretty stressed about the whole situation. Freya reciprocates this at about 6:09 by backing off and turning away slightly, but again, it looks like she *was* preparing a few moments earlier to fight. Maine Coons are naturally very laid back and relaxed cats. Even so, however, there was definitely a chance for a fight there. To me, I think the safest way of introducing these cats to each other would be to have introduced their scents to each other and associated them with positive experiences such as playing with toys underneath a door together, or having them eat dinner on either side of the door. I am glad that nothing bad happened, but to everyone watching, I would recommend you take introductions slower if you are introducing a new kitten into a home that already has cats.
I prefer to let the get acquainted under a door for a few days, and getting their dinner close by. When they start playing footsie under the door, fuller introductions are in order--generally over dinner as well. The meal is a great distraction to drama.
I did this for my cats too. I was getting a second cat and watched some vids on how to introduce them. Slowly introducing them through smells and door cracks for moments at a time and it stretches out to like a week before fully showing them to each other seems too needlessly tedious. Since I work from home I thought, they just need more interactions with each other before they become friends and since him always there I can break up any situation that gets too dicey. The key is increasing the fun/good interactions. Feeding them together, treats and playing. The cats seeing you, their human, treating the other cat the same way as you treat them will help them not see the other cat as a threat. There will be fur furrowing and hisses but that goes away quickly. Using that method within 48hrs they were the best of buds. Always playing, grooming and sleeping with each other.
Exactly, I totally agree with you here. I see so many people overthinking everything with the introduction and making it slow and unneccessarily stretched out.
