I live in Maine and have 8 coon cats. They all have very unique habits and catalities. Some are lazy, some active. Some love outdoors, others barely go out. Some are mischievous, some cause no troubles. Some are meek others are aggressive. I wouldn't take this video too seriously...

Someone left a box of baby kittens by our back door. We adopted them all and the Mom. The first I had ever heard of Main Coone cats was when I asked the Vet if I needed to get the hair in their ears and between their paws clipped. I didn’t even know that they were larger than normal because I hadn’t owned a cat and knew absolutely nothing. People would see them and ask what I was feeding them to make them so big and then the tails started to expand and they got gigantic, much larger than the mom. Anyway they all lived long lives and gave me so much joy and my humanity. The adventures they got into as a group (sneaking a mop, coffee filters, a sewing box) upstairs to their lair for example. They all got along and were playful all of their lives. I will forever be grateful that somebody left that box of kittens and their Mom by our back door.

I miss my Maine Coon, she passed in 2014 at 16 years old. I rescued her from a warehouse I worked at when she was a kitten. It was 3 years before I found out what kind of cat she was. 19 lbs of sweetness, and a long cat. I miss my dog in cats clothes.

I had a Maine Coon for 16 yrs. Got her when she was abt 5 months old. After a nasty auto accident moved back with my mom. Ms Brat included.
One thing I did every night after I got home from work, I would give her treats. 3 of them. She'd be happy and waiting, for treats 1 & 2, but as soon as soon as I got #3 out of uts container, her ears went back and she got a disgusted look.on her face. She knew it was the last treat for that night.
Mom OFC burst out laughing. 'That cat can count!" she said. And she was right.
    Yep. They're smart.

Miss my cat. She lived 15+ years. I fed her when I saw my in my backyard and she just kept coming back so I took her in over time. She was already a big cat the first time I saw her so I never knew her real age. She only loved being carried and babied by me. I was driving back home one time from playing basketball and once I turned into my street i saw something on the floor from a distance and I already knew it was my cat. She didn’t have one scratch on her. I just picked her up and buried her in my backyard. My favorite cat 🐱 🙏🏽

One serious con...once they take a scent-liking to something that might be important to you.....they will plot to seize and hide that item. I have one M=C that also does the opposite.....taking one single item that I hide, and this cat will seize via scent for an hour, to find it, and return it to my chair. Even goes beyond the room, to any room in the house....sniffing.

  • @MajorWolf72

It’s pretty easy to sum up: A Maine Coon is more like a dog than any other cat breed. They want attention and are super fixated on their favorite human. You could rightfully say that they are in love 😻 What’s better with them than having a dog is, that they can roam free, which I absolute recommend. They shouldn’t be house cats, they are FAR too active for that! They are messy eaters and some require a sanitary shave of their fur to not get soiled. They have a standout personality indeed, they really care for their favorite human. And they can learn commands and fetch and stuff other cats are just not interested in. The Maine Coon wants to be part of your daily life, and you need time for her, like for a little doggy. They can also overwhelm other cats with their different and distanceless behavior, again, more like a dog than a cat. So a Maine Coon can also be a challenge for other cats. All in all, if you are cat experienced and have the time to share and to care, Maine Coons are AWESOME!

But, but, but...Main Coons are trendy, and I WANT one! Never mind that I live in a 300sf apartment on Manhattan, and I work three jobs to pay the rent, so I'm never home. It will get used to it, I'm shuuuuure.
(I need to replace the Australian Shepherd I had for a while - he was a problem, and the pet psychiatrist said he had a personality disorder and needed therapy and prozac - and I don't share my prozac with ANYBODY.)

Very true I was never a cat person, but I had an ex GF that wanted a cat, I agreed after much begging, and when we went to the shelter to adopt the cat she wanted there was this big fluffy grey cat meowing at me through the cage. I had some beers with friends before going so I was a little tipsy and made the spontaneous decision that I wanted the cat meowing at me. Turned out it was a maine coon, and even my dad that hates cats liked her. That cat won me over and I still miss her.

I can confirm the issues with being destructive when bored, the high maintenance coat and especially the health problems: my first male Maine Coon suddenly died at age 3, an autopsy found HCM. His sister has hip dysplasia (although she still climps and jumps at almost 13 years now, I only know this because of X-rays taken when she dislocated her knee cap a few times many years ago). Another one had a rare fatal intestinal cancer at only 7. Both my remaining cats have bad teeth and inflammed gums, the vets says that is common for this breed. Treatment requires a lot of money, they need to be under general anaesthesia and due to their age each time I am a little bit more afraid that they will not wake up again. Well, to be honest, I am also afraid that they just drop dead at home for no special reason now.

I love my big coon girl when I lift her or she lays on my torso every night she takes up my ENTIRE torso you only see my legs and arms and part of my head sticking out from over her. lol Also I rarely pick her up anymore she's just too big and heavy for my Arthritis now. Also she's one smart cookie knows trick or commands like : Sit, Stay, Stand, Wait, Go back, Left shake, Right shake, OK, rug, come, Up, Lay down, Nose, Eye, Ear etc all things I taught her. At night she has a routine of laying on my chest when I get into bed she patiently wait for me to adjust my pillows, put my glass of water down next to me on nightstand pick what show I want to watch staring at me whole time waiting. When I am down and I lean back into bed she's gets on me lol LIKE CLOCK work! Anyways back to what I was saying I decided to make use of them time we are literally FACE to FACE every night (like inch's lol) and I started teaching her face parts. Pointing to my eye and saying EYE and then lightly tapping her eye and saying EYE. Same with nose, mouth, ear etc. My husband made fun of me saying WTF are you doing? I said teaching her face parts. He laughed and said she does not understand you, you know that right? DUH I KNOW she does not really know in ENGLISH what the word means but, she will understand the sound I say that sounds like EAR will mean her ear or my ear. So, been doing this every night for a year. This is how smart she is, she likes to reach out and paw my face you guys know what I mean too that affectionate let me lightly touch your face with my paw well, now when she puts her paw on my eye or mouth somewhere I do not want it. I say Daffodil plz do not put your paw on my eye and she remove's it instantly or don't touch my mouth plz, again she removes it. She is well aware I am using the word mouth or eye and reacts. SMART cats very!

I have a shorthair one too. Came in my yard in the country looking for food. Brought him in my house. Asked the neighbors but wasn't theirs. He is HUGE now. LONG body, very thick and long tail. Extremely CALM. Never fought with my other male cat. My cat growled at him. But he just stayed in the corner and ignored my cat. He still ignores him. Very QUIET. Sneaks up to me now and then and wants pets. Eyes are slanted. He looks Egyptian. When he's in the front room with me at times he will stand at the kitchen door and meow to go in the other room. He sits there until I let him into the other room. He really IS like a dog. I think he weighs 12 lbs at least. He almost too heavy to pick up. He has a strange meow more like a chirp not like other cats. He only makes that sound when he wants to go in another room. He's gray and black like a striped tabby, but his markings are DIFFERENT not like other cats. I think he's a main coon, but not sure. He's not like a normal cat.

It seems so cool and relaxed, always allows me to pet it and is very relaxed and cautious when playing with me. I like it cause I’ve never met a more dog-like breed of cat than this one. I am looking to get one but I need your advice. I’ve never had a pet and I was always a dog person cause of the nature of the cats. I’ve always loved cats but couldn’t get ok with their temperament. I want to have one of those cause of their appearance and behaviour. Is it hard to have this cat in an apartment and is it good for people with little to no experience with pets? I want to take care to one of those sweethearts but I don’t know if it will be easy for someone as inexperienced as me. Thank you in advance! I owned one, a 19 pound female Maine Coon in a small apartment and it's all good. Think of a dog wearing cat's clothes. They bond with you and a lot of them, if not all, always want to be with you. They do need to be brushed a lot, but well worth the effort. I was a dog person, but my rescue Maine Coon cat changed my mind and turned me into a cat person.

MC owner here, these cats look all majestic and shit, so people are like, yeah, sign me up for the big, awesome concrete kitty. Let me warn you that this video is the most misleading one I have seen on this breed. They are no different than any other cat. You have a 60-40 chance of living with a complete asshole except this one is huge, and they not only scratch with a lion-size paw, they bite because they are big enough to do that. I had one who passed recently and he was a doll baby. I swear this cat could say hello in better English than most teenagers and was loveable beyond what I could describe; his name was Ozman.
Well when Ozman went to the rainbow bridge we got Zoe and she is not. She hates being pet, she hates being near people, she hates dogs, other cats, the TV, the carpet, box springs, cat toys, dog toys pretty much everything. Everyone thinks satan has hell hounds but they are wrong, he has Maine Coons from Zoe's family.

Brush brush brush. I've had cats all my life, but the grooming is totally different with a Maine Coon. You have to brush a few times a week. My MC has a cottony fur texture and it gets matted really easily, especially under his belly.

It’s at the ARL for vet treatment and hoping they have better luck finding the owners. But there’s no chip and it’s still at the shelter. It’s been there for awhile.
I have VIP on adoption and they’ll probably going to be calling me tomorrow to pick this cat back up. It’s a girl and I dunno the age. But I figured I better get educated now. Because this cat choose my home and family, and I’m gonna make that happen it that’s what she wants.
