- Lang & Heyne is Marco Lang’s watch company that specializes in watches of the highest quality and craftsmanship, and like all such companies, their offerings are often quite high. However, if you want the very best, you can find an entry level, while expensive, is not impossible.
A diamond cap stone! I'm in love with the level of detail, that only comes with true dedication, to fine watch making. The click, spring, and spring anchor, the sound of winding, I am certain is worth the price of admission.
Hey William, you put it eloquently and spot on! Thank you. Kindest regards, Bill
Once again ‘Bill’ thank you very much for your tireless efforts in bringing ‘us’ endless knowledge on watchmaking in all it’s varied fields and form:)
Hey Kenneth, I really need to win the lottery if I'm going to have videos about this kind of watch!! (If I win, I'll get you one too!) Cheers, Bill
Amazing video. We have been chatting about this brand at work a lot lately. It is the brand that really has taken a lot of the beginner watch enthusiast to the realization that the level of artistic excellence is itself not just a product to sell or buy but to appreciate. Thanks again for the video!
Hi BoaT, on Friday, the video includes an interview with Marco Lang. Cheers, Bill
Just want to say what comes into my mind right now. Your videos are not only informative they are well made too. It's always an enjoyment to watch. 👍👍👍
Hey EU-S, thanks man! This is another EU company to be proud of! Cheers, Bill
Really great show… appreciate the attention to detail and ability to explain complex systems in a simplistic manner. 👍🏻
Hey DogBear! Thanks man! Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci now that I’ve started down this rabbit hole, I tried on the Lang & Heyne F3 at Cellini in NYC but after learning that Marco has left… do I now chase his new eponymous line instead? Thoughts on quality between the two ‘competing’ lines?
@@dogbearglobal9258 The Friedrich III is one of Marco Lang's models... Caliber VI is a gem with a trigonal bridge and diamond atop the balance stem. The new Marco Lang is sky high in pricing, sold out and a waiting list. It's an incredible watch and you can check it out at www.marcolangwatches.com/en/watches/ ... a watch I'd dearly like to have but cannot afford. Check it out and let me know what you think. Bill
Beautiful piece.
Hi Rasher, they make watches that are so good, I'd never ask about the resale value....because I'd never sell it! Cheers, Bill
Hi Bill. Another great video. Lang und Heyne are one of those brands I can show people not into watches and they just 'get'. It's obvious to them and me why they cost what they do whereas with say 'the holy trinity' it takes a lot of explaining. As it happens I've not seen a video of yours on affordable watches so I'd better subscribe. Thanks again!
Welcome Jeremy to the Home of Unaffordables! Actually, on Sunday the video covers a very affordable array of watches centered around a certain movement. But, fear not! I'll keep covering watches that will keep us all broke! Cheers, Bill
Hey Bill. Will you mind if I tell you that I have anxiety issue and to keep my mind from over thinking before sleep, I play your videos and put my handsfree in and put my cell phone aside, your videos really make me feel good and help me fall asleep almost every night for last 2 months. I am sorry for doing thing to your very fine videos but I feel so positive while listening to you that it makes me feel good about life and stuff. Thank you.
So Muhammad... my videos are a cure for insomnia? That's encouraging! Cheers, Bill
WatchArtSci it's complicated, I have sever anxiety and your videos help me fall asleep and put my anxiety away for a while
I am glad to hear that. When your mind is at ease, you make better decisions. Kindest regards, Bill
Hey Bill, you are awesome! So many useful knowledge. Watch society owes you a lot. I highly appreciate what you have been doing so far! Great vids always!
Hey Serkan, thanks man! It's fun for me since I enjoy watch collection and talking about watches. Kindest regards, Bill
I was upset when he started wrapping up , I wanted to learn more about this one. That 17mins felt like 9mins.
I'd Just heard of Lang & Heyne and thought they were pretty interesting
Hi Willy, yes there're incredible watches. I have the Friedrich II, and it's one of my favorite to own and wear. The story of watches by Marco Lang, though, is just starting to be written. True also with his father Rolf Lang, Dresden. Kindest regards, Bill
I always enjoy your videos. Many of the watches you highlight are not at all affordable by the most people, even second hand.
I hope that you will discuss more affordable watches. Keep up the good work. D
Hi Daryl, on this Sunday, that's exactly what I'm doing. I like to switch between the very best and the more affordable. My favorite is to find the very best at affordable prices! Kindest regards, Bill
H Bill sir ,I really enjoy the direction you seem to be head .you may be converting me to top end watches each time you take a look inside you can see just where the money went and it’s a real piece of art and created by people that take great pride in every pin and screw.I would call it a luxury watch and never mention the entry level bit.Take care sir.👍🏻
Hi Paul, I've come to think of watch collection, like art collection, as both rational sanity and obsessive madness. The rationality in collecting is not the financial worth of a watch, but rather the skill, creativity and craftsmanship of the watchmaker. By focusing on what goes into a watch, we avoid the madness of thinking in terms of a financial commodity. The "Entry Level" simply refers to the height of the first step. Kindest regards, bill
WatchArtSci Hi Bill sir,I was only jesting about the mentioning of the phrase entry level but I’d like to tell you a month or so ago I bought a Sinn 556i delighted with it and as usual before after and during this time I read up on it as much as I could but recently I’ve read 3 articles that rained on my parade saying it was entry level and it’s lack of Sinn brilliant technology all of which I knew about but it just cheapen it for me I understand what they meant but £600 to a working class person you don’t like to hear you are getting the cheap version.i wasn’t having a go at you sir .Take care my friend 👍🏻
Bill - thanks for a very thorough and informative review on a relatively unknown, but important, high horology German brand from Dresden. Are you still drooling over their Georg model? :)
I had to stop drooling over the Georg ... and start drooling over the more affordable (by about $10k) Friedrich III. Cheers, Bill
The best way to set a watch is with the atomic clock app. Which is synchronized with the Colorado's atomic clock. The reference for accurate time keeping. That is why you need a second hand stop function. I love to set watches precisely and compare the time 24 hour later. The plus/minus variation tell me if I got a good mechanical movement.
Can't get more accurate than the atomic clock, Jobs! The second stop does exactly that. Kindest regards, Bill
Hello Bill, interestingly, Parmigiani have 21600 bph for their dress watches (e.g., Tonda 1950s and the Kalpa hebdomadaire), 28800 bph for their sports watches, and 36000 bph for their latest chronograph (in order to get the precision to 1/10th of a second). Perhaps the BPH is related to the primary function of the watch, for example, there is a 72000 bph breguet type 22 sports chronograph. Dress watches at the very least tend to be of a lower BPH for high horology. I also love to see the escapement and balance wheel work at a slower pace..it's much more hypnotic.
Hey WA! That's a great observation that I missed. That Breguet won the 2014 GPHG Grand Prize., and at 10Hz the balance wheel floats on a magnetic cushion. At 39,000 CHF, ... pas mal! Cheers, Bill
Hi Bill, what aspects of Lang & Heyne do you think put them ahead of something like Moritz Grossmann? Is it the specifically designed movements? Because I know some of the higher MG movements have wonderful finishing techniques to them like beveled gears, violet screws (instead of blue) and are a similar price point to the L&H Friedrich III (around $24K). I can't make up my mind on one of them. Still need to save up more but still. Thanks.
Before he left Lang & Heyne, Marco Lang developed about 6-7 different caliber movements ranging from remontoir d'Egalité to rattrapante with brilliant designs. He also, developed the UWD 33.1 movement. While MG movements are fine, there's only about 2 base movements and none are especially innovative; but they are beautifully made and finished. Matter of degree Terminal. Happy New Year, Bill
4:15 eccentric seconds does not mean deadbeat seconds it means off center seconds.
Right again, Jasmine. Eccentric seconds is something like small seconds; not jumping seconds. Take care, Bill
Bill, thanks again for this video and sharing your extensive knowledge. Any idea what shock protection systems L&H employ for their movements? Had a quick look but still no cigar...therefore I am checking-in with you. Hope to hear from you when convenient. Thanks.
Hardi, I couldn't find out jack about the shock absorbers they're using. Probably a standard Swiss one-I couldn't locate any German ones. Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci Thanks Bill! You take care.
Hi Bill, thank you for sharing. Beautiful watch. Would you still buy it now when Marco Lang has already left the company? Is it true the quality will not be as high because it is no longer made by Marco Lang? Thank you in advance.
Hi Eugene, it's impossible to know. My Friedrich II is N°10..., and I haven't heard any of the post-Marco watches being better or worse. I'm not sure when the post-Marco watches were being made, though. I found a Friedrich III #34 from May of 2018, and since Marco didn't leave until 2019, I'd imagine a few more F-III's were made prior to his departure. I don't think they made as many Friedrich II's (Arabic numbers), but I know #10 (mine) was purchased before Marco left since I got it in 2018, and Marco left in 2019. The only watch developed after Marco's departure is the Hektor...it used a movement UWD 33.2, which was a center-second version of the UWD 33.1 developed by Marco. Take care, Bill
I am really becoming a fan of German watch making. They seem to produce very simple watches in both design and mechanics.
Ranging from Nomos Glahütte to Lang & Heyne, there's the simplicity... or clarity.. in German watches, but with A. Lange & Söhne as well as Lang & Heyne, you see the engraving and swan neck regulators in the movement. The L&H Konrad and Heinrich models running on the Calibre V also have a remontoir d'egalité...a true grail, but at 70,000 semolinas ... at tad too dear. Check this out: www.lang-und-heyne.de/en/caliber/caliber-v/ Cheers, Bill
And the most extreme of complications e.g. Lang und Heyne Calibre VII www.lang-und-heyne.de/en/caliber/caliber-vii/
Dear Bill, I own the steel version and would put Marco's hand finishing up there with the some of the best. Absolutely flawless. His chrono may be my favorite chrono available. Love your.videos and would like to share my independents-centric collection with you. Not sure where to send info/pics. Cheers
Matt, send pictures of watches to williebegoode@att.net .

Thanks,

wow love this video! between senator excellence steel would you choose the white dial roman or the black dial arabic ? thank you very much
White Roman, Serge ... white backgrounds are easier for me to read. My watches with a black dial are a bit classier, though. Take care and be safe, Bill😷
Hi Bill, Thanks for the great video. Lang & Heyne time pieces are work of art, but for many of us mere mortals is not affordable, what do you think is the affordable (10k) time piece that most resemble Lang & Heyne.
Best,
Abdul
Hey Abdul, maybe on the pre-owned market in the future? At least we need to know about the parameters of top quality .... just in case we win the lottery. Cheers, Bill
Hi Bill, is it still good to buy Lang & Heyne watches after both founders have left?
Heyne was only there a year Eugene. Once Marco Lang left after 2018, the only thing new is the Hektor...it has a UWD 33.2 movement which is a 33.1 designed by Marco but with a center seconds. All of the others by Marco Lang are great watches. Take care, Bill
Can it take me down to dave Jones Locker? Not my cup of tea I'm a diver watch guy but interesting nonetheless!
You wouldn't want to with that watch Nathan... Take care, Bill
Imho, By looking at the teeth of the wheels, If the inner parts are made from solid gold (i.e wheels, etc), they probably had taken a little shortcut..
In the process, they just need to mold the wheels and polish them, and the molding template can be used for a lot of watches. The time needed for making the wheel with a piece of metal by hand is far longer than a molding process. If they’re saying their watches need an extensive labour hours (compared to a steel hand made watches) well that’s a bit overrated..
Hey YV! These are the work of a master craftsman; there're no shortcuts. They're even better in person. Look at the close-ups of the movement. Cheers, Bill
Hey Bill, what is the difference between the Friedrich II and Friedrich III, aside from the type of hour indices? Is one more expensive than the other? If yes, what accounts for any difference?
Gilberto, I don't think there are any differences other than the dial and hands. Both use the Caliber VI movement. I have the Friedrich II because I prefer Arabic numbers over Roman; but otherwise, I'd be perfectly happy with a Friedrich III. Take care and be safe, Bill😷
With euro 100 a screw, afraid to lose them when getting serviced :)
Hey Willie, I hadn't thought of that! However, if they lost a screw, they'd have to replace it with a genuine replacement! Cheers, Bill
Bill i want the konrad, beautiful
Me too Eldy, but I'll have to first win the lottery! Cheers, Bill
Bill, what do you think of Hentschel? I see them as to L&H as Glashutte Original is to A Lange & Sohne
They base their mfg. movement on the Schild AS 1130, and looking at the Schild AS 1130 and their HUW 1130 the similarly is clear. With a base price of about $5,000 (steel) they're not too far out of range, but what I fear is that the HUW 1130 is little more than a AS 1130 with a swan neck regulator, gold chatons, and snailing on the winding and barrel wheels. But their gold one with the brown dial is a real beauty. Compare compare a picture an AS 1130 with the HUW 1130 pictured at the Hentschel site. You may be on to something in the parallel between Hentschel and Lang & Heyne. Kindest regards, Bill
WatchArtSci Thanks for the homework assignment! The more I learn the more I want to learn. As long as you don't tell me my Frodsham grail is a modified Casio :-)
...modified Invicta...
WatchArtSci The Schild has a really interesting history. Both in terms of world events and the modern watchmakers that choose it over a current production movement. Thanks again Bill.
Hi Bill
How dos Lang&Heyne compare to Lang&Sohne in the exceptional Horology ?
Hi DK, I think that Lang & Heyne is to A. Lange & Söhne as Patek Philippe is to F.P. Journe. Both Lang and Journe are world class watchmakers and provide exceptional horology, while both PP and AL&S are at the top of high horology in high-production watches. What are your views on the two German companies? Kindest regards, Bill
WatchArtSci
Thank you Bill, I am new to Lang&Heyne but fascinated by this brand due to your video...on the other hand A Lang & Sohne is probably my favourite brand, on part with PP ....but they do go the extra mile by decorating their movements like no other and assembling their watches twice...!
Kind regards
Hi DK, A Lange & Söhn also 'twice-assemble' their watches...really excellent company. I prefer Lang & Heyne because of Marco Lang's design, skill, craftsmanship and that big diamond on top of the escapement! Cheers, Bill
WatchArtSci one can go no wrong with either !
Cheers Bill
Hey Bill,
What does it cost to service a piece like this? What might the service intervals be?
Hi RP, it's one of those watches where you'd probably want to send it back to Dresden for service, but note the lower frequency, which means that the service requirements are not as frequent. If you'd like, I could find out for you. Cheers, Bill
WatchArtSci
I'm saving up for one of these. I need about $21,950
youll need 40k
bcs of service:D
HG...do you have one that's been serviced? You know you'll need that much? Thanks, Bill
nope, but its a very small company
do you want me to call them and ask?
Get your facts right before you tell the whole world standard speed is 4 Hertz.
Sb Sb, you sound grumpy...the standard speed is 4Hz, and I suggest you provide facts to the contrary if you have information otherwise. Rolex makes 1.4 million watches a year, and their's are generally 4Hz and most ETA movements are 4Hz. So get on your high horse and gallop off to find a reference that proves otherwise.....if you can. Cheers, Bill
Bill, I don't feel it's right for you to wear a beret when reviewing all of these German watches.
#watchcollaborator
Clyde, you know that my beret infuriates the bigots and embarrasses the French...what's not to like? Hasta mañana! Bill
get a schiffchen
Well, PzL, you get one; my beret is very comfortable. Cheers, Bill
