In 1971 the people of Chainpur created a very short grass landing strip in the hope that STOL planes might bring supplies. In 1972 (50 years ago) I was in the first flight from Kathmandu in a Twin Otter plane. Bhairab Prasad Upadhyay and I were the only passengers with the pilot and co-pilot. We were bringing equipment for the science classes at Satyabadi High School. As we arrived, villagers were gathered to greet us along the east side of the landing strip near to the river. As the plane landed a rice paddy wall at the end of the short landing strip tore the rear wheel off the plane and the plane nearly flipped over at high speed. Without that wheel the plane went off the landing strip to the west, luckily not into the crowd of people. The people cheered as a first plane had arrived to Chainpur. No one was badly injured, including the 4 of us on the plane. The people helped lift the rear of the airplane off the ground and turn it so that it could take off. The pilots decided to try to take off while dragging the rear of the plane on the runway but refused to take BP and me because of the danger of failure. Shortly after, the government prohibited any flights to that landing strip. As I recall that landing strip was north of Satyabadi High School. The current airport is south of Chainpur. It seems to be much longer than that original landing strip and capable of handling larger planes.
