1st...this was so enjoyable! 2nd...I never graduated from "paint by numbers." 3rd...So nice to know that starting at Dollar Store & Job Lot were worth a go. (I have invested in "cheap" but better than Dollar Store paints) I learned guitar on a Sears & Roebuck but now own a Fender. When I learned what I could the sound was no longer pleasing/rewarding. This has been my experience with painting. Thanks so much for the entertaining & informative video. I shall return!
One thing I find with dollar store paints is that quality varies a lot from manufacturer to manufacturer and from color to color. At my Canadian dollar stores, I can get DecoArt and Acrylique brand paints. They're both surprisingly not horrible. I find that the colors that suffer the most are the fluorescent ones. They have zero opacity, so I have to put a layer of gesso first before applying them over any other color.
@Francois_L_7933 I’ve tested a lot of neon paint, I’ve had some that smell decidedly fishy & didn’t dry but I did find that consistency & opacity was pretty much the same across the board. Building up layers of acrylic paint is the only way to get true opacity & colour vibrancy as well. The worst paints I used were posca, on canvas I’d never recommend them. Craft paint is only one up from poster paint.
Loved your video. Wouldn't know what to do without Dollar Store during these hard times. Thanks for answering a question I"m sure a lot of us newbie painters had.
I must say I first bought paint at the dollar tree and them Michael’s well I will tell you that I enjoyed working with the dollar tree painting supplies 🌻💕👏
I'm just now gonna try their paint to save money. I'm glad I ran across your video. Very anxious to start. You do a great job with videotaping but I must admit that I love this 2nd painting better as having it more colorful. Thanks so much!
!!! Greetings from Montréal, Québec, Canada !!! I am 62 yrs. old, a beginner at painting (Not even strated to paint yet, but soon.) I have bought that kind of paint (in a similar store here called 'Dollorama') for me to practice with and make me better at 'Mixing' colors and doing Trials and errors. looking forward to seeing your past videos and follow your next adventures !!! Have a great rest of week and weeke, STAY HEALTHY !!! Cheers !!!
Ca va!! Glad to hear you are starting on your artistic journey :) remember to keep every step a fun one filled with positivity. You’ll learn so much 👏🏻
The crafters square white paint reacts as if I am mixing latex and enamel. White works best by itself in this brand. It skins up if mixing colors with this paint and other paints.
The best thing about getting in the habit of dollar store materials, is that you get easily impressed by even the slightest bit better quality materials. It’s like a baseball player putting a heavy weighted donut on their bat, so when they take it off, their bat feels much lighter and more controllable than they would feel without using the heavy weighted donut
Pro tip for yall. If you nee to cover a dark color with a lighter one. Start with a misty grey base coat first and then start with building you're color slowly with white/desired color ratio slowly through your coats. So let's do yellow for an example. After got you base coat you want to do a pale yellow on your next coat and with each coat lower your white ratio and raise your yellow ratio until you get the desired opacity.
i’m currently looking into painting a vinyl on a budget, should i use these acrylics or look for more for pricier brands ?? i love how these looked but idk how they’ll work on vinyl primer
Hmm, I don’t have experience painting on vinyl, but my guess would be to go for the better brands like Liquitex or Golden. Especially if you want your painting to last you a very long time :)
Based on the comparisons of more expensive paint counterparts, I would say the quality isn’t as bad as I thought. I know lots of people are on budgets when learning to paint and making a $4 investment in paint and brushes sounds less daunting than a $35 one.
The paints were actually quite vibrant for being so transparent, I like how it turned out.
right!? I was pretty impressed by that!
I actually like the Dollar Tree painting better. The opacity gives it more of a fairytale look. The other one is somewhat flatter.
That’s something I didn’t even consider :) good point!
I believe you knocked it out of the park! Weldone❤
Thank you so much!!! ☺️
But transparent acrylics can have some cool effects too!! Dollar store..not bad..and perfect for artsy kids to get started.
oh yes absolutely! :)

aw thank you for the kind words. And yes, it is nice to know you don't have to break the bank in order to paint and have some fun with acrylics :)
I loved the dollar tree unicorn painting much better. It came out beautiful!!!
It really came out great with the colors :)

That is an excellent point and I would agree with the fluorescent paint colors. Lots of work to get those to show up well!
Not horrible does not seem to be a great evaluation...😂😂

I must say I first bought paint at the dollar tree and them Michael’s well I will tell you that I enjoyed working with the dollar tree painting supplies 🌻💕👏

I loved the dollar store painting more than the name brand😊.
❤️❤️❤️
For being very transparent likw they are they are actually a very vibrant colors which surprised me. Awsome job on the painting
Right!? Very vibrant indeed :)
I like the background with the liquitex paintsmore but like the unicorn of the dollar store paints more.
I agree!
I bought some dollar tree paint some weeks ago & added a little bit of all purpose flower, it makes the paint less watery & a bit thicker
Ps thank you for this video, I love the content
that's a great hack! :)

Ah very interesting 😀 yeah I think this is a decent start if you’re not sure about acrylic paint and want to give it a try.

Awesome energy I love it.
Hehe Aw thanks so much :)
I bet the dt paint could be a great base for watercolors. Lean into the thinness of the paint
Oh interesting! It might make for a good base!
Very good work dear friend 💖👍
Thank you so much 😊
Aww it's really so good. Waiting for the next one. Love from India. ❤❤❤
aw thank you so much!!! And thank you so much for watching :)

Ahh that’s very good to know!
The best acrylic paint is Duncan Opaque Stain.
Second is CeramCoat acrylics. These are opaque, also called solid colors.
Nice!

That’s a great point- especially on learning patience :)
Actually, I like the dollar store version better. But both are nice
I am decidng if I should get the painting supplies from Dollar Tree today lol
Ah! Good luck!
Great information thank you 😊
You are so welcome!

Np! I paint shoes for a living and it has the same problem
Apple Barrel from walmart is only 50 cent a piece and much better paint. I use it all the time as many crafters do.
Agreed! :)
Even liquitex is cheap quality to me...I use Golden acrylic paints..good price and quality..for the price some of the best out there.
Golden is pretty amazing, I have to say :) But, we each work with what we like and respond to best!
Muchmuch luv to you💖
Muy bonito hiper HI Chile 🇨🇱
I used them when I started but moved on to other products.
Yup, glad this worked for you at the beginning of your art journey :)

I heard that if you added corn starch, the paint had a thicker consistency. Idk?
I have heard of that too :) I’ll have to try that if I use these paints again!
i did the doughnut paintig .. not done the unicorn yet got to try a new one ...frist one was bad
All attempts are learning journeys in your painting experience. Take it one step at a time, queen bee! You got this 👏🏻
Thanks Amanda 🐦🌺

How can you thicken the dollar store paint?
I’ve heard cornstarch is a good additive to dollar store paint :)

Thanks! baby girl is awesome and growing like a weed :) Her personality is totally shining through and I love it
😁 Hi Amanda iam 💪 now my back is better. Ready. To paint tomorrow.. From mandy in Dorset.. Love all your work.. And its Nearly Halloween 🦇 👻 🕸️
I am so glad to hear you're doing much better! :) Get pumped for Halloween, Queen Bee!
They did have these items but now nothing stocked
Yeah DT tends to do that or takes a while to restock
It’s not terrible.
very true! :D
Dollar tree one looks better imo.
Haha good to know :)
Dollar tree paints are like craft smart paints from Michael's. They're horrible.
Come on. What quality are you going to get at the dollar tree?
Based on the comparisons of more expensive paint counterparts, I would say the quality isn’t as bad as I thought. I know lots of people are on budgets when learning to paint and making a $4 investment in paint and brushes sounds less daunting than a $35 one.
