I've always felt that way! Rae always says that you can basically use anything to make art, and my reply in my head has always been "that's because you're do damned good at it! You may be able to, but when I use crappy materials, I get crappy art."
Hearing you say that it takes more skill to use crappy materials really drove that home for me.
Same! Every art UA-camr says that; and it's only really true if you're already amazingly skilled. If you're like me and you're mediocre at art, it's not gonna work out like that.
@@LordofFullmetal Well, it can be said for anything. You have to learn how to use what you have. It can take time to learn the characteristics of something, but once you do it becomes easier over time to adapt to different things.
Adapt, Improvise and Overcome.
Yes and no... The learning curve for bad supplies is SO much higher, there's less margin for error. If you are able to learn the quirks of the cheap supplies (and every brand has its own quirks) you can still do a good job. However, if you're still learning, it's WAY easier to learn if you use the nice supplies! I always feel discouraged by people who put off using the "good stuff", whether it be paint, fabric, yarn, or cooking ingredients, until they're "better" at whatever, because a lot of times they're just making things harder for themselves. Not only are the cheap items harder to use, but when you enjoy what you're working with, you relax, you enjoy the process more, and it SHOWS.
I found, when learning art, only having access to the cheaper art supplies actually helped me. Having to work harder to get things to look right and learning how to layer and blend on the max, translates into a LOT better art when you're suddenly faced with supplies that is easier to use.
@@leonardo.diCATio it really depends on the person's confidence levels. Someone without much confidence in themselves, and without knowledge of the fact that the materials they are using are any worse than those other people they see may be using, they can quite easily fall into the trap of thinking they aren't any good, not that the supplies are sub par, amd give up. I think there is a definite line there. I think really, new artists should be tought right away that supplies can affect their work, and that you can use less professional quality supplies but not to expect professional level outcomes.
For example, even after being an artist for over 20 years, I had no idea how inportant paper is to art. I thought it's just something you make a mark on and that the "better" papers were just a gimmick. I was so wrong and that lack of education almost had me quit watercolour painting altogether. I had found somewhat of a natural talent (I mean, toward the subject, not with the medium seeing as I had so far been both practicing and educating myself for so long in all forms of art) and was in a groove when I ran out of paper. I bought Canson XL and tried to glaze, blend and all that stuff and I just made a massive mess with holes in it. Now if you do wet on wet backgrounds for things like cards, it's perfectly fine, but if you try to do even a third glaze let alone more than that, it's the worst. I thought paper is paper. And that I just had some beginners luck with painting succulents and that I was the mediocre watercolour artist I thought I was, seeing as my main form of art for so long was pencil crayons.
That all said, when I finally was able to afford Prismacolours at age 30ish, I was suddenly a LOT better with pencil crayons as I had developed my skills with crayola. Prismacolours feel like I'm breathing for the first time, while on an exciting roller-coaster for the amount of fun I'm having. It's not stressful AT ALL and I can blend FOR DAYS! I think if I had them when I was younger I would have taken less art hiatuses, especially since I was born with Arthritis and most of them were from having to press so hard with them.
The first art piece literally reminds me of kids art that’s really advanced. Like your parents buy you an art kit not knowing anything about quality, but you’re a talented kid so you make nice pieces with it anyway. It’s not perfect and the colors are a little funky, but it’s still impressive. 🤷♀️
This hits really close to home....at least the case they came in was nice and reusable.
I REALLY respect that Jazza doesn't show the art of other creators when working with them and instead has people go to their channel of they want to see their work. It is something that I haven't seen done on many of the other channels I watch, and I just REALLY respect Jazza for doing it.
The technique of wiping the paint away helped it a lot. I wouldn’t have thought of that and it’s not even a very elaborate technique. I like them both, and the pun is very fun.
The "dollar tree" drawing is even funnier when you realise he's Australian, and our dollars don't look like that.

When I ran an art supply store, I always told the students to buy what they could afford, and if that was really cheap stuff, it would push and progress their creativity.
Loved this video, its a great message for young artists that get discouraged when they think they need all of these extremely nice/expensive art supplies to be a good artist. All you need is skill!! (Though expensive supplies definitely dont hurt haha)
While this is true, it can be hard to develop those skills when you are handicapped by tough supplies that don't work as good supplies should (and they can teach you bad habits). Nobody should let bad materials stop them from trying, but it's also worth doing your research to know how to get the maximum bang for your buck if you can only get limited supplies.
This is why I get a little angry in stores when I see (for example) those big "value" packages of "watercolor" paint brushes that are total garbage and actually really awful value over buying one decent brush. Lots of beginner artists or their families out there getting bamboozled by that stuff.
@@bluesonicstreak7317 this is exactly what I was coming here to say. Jazza could produce amazing art with these because he already had the skill to do so, skill he built up with actual good quality supplies (good quality doesn't have to mean expensive). And even then he still struggled. These would be a nightmare for beginners to use, and let's be honest, even determined beginner's might be driven away from trying to build artistic skill by supplies if they literally have to fight with them to get any result. Especially when you consider how much dialogue around art makes it seem as if its a natural born talent and not a developed skill and how many people believe that because that's what they heard in school. I could very easily see a beginner trying to use cheap supplies and assuming they're just inherently bad at art or that art just isn't for them and not understanding that the supplies are getting in the way of their enjoyment and growth. And that's truly unfortunate. Like you've said in your comment, you want art supplies that are good enough that they won't overly frustrate you or teach you bad habits, but that doesn't mean you need super expensive ones either.
@@Lisa_Flowers I used to draw as a kid but I don't anymore. I like makeup and that's the experience I can pull from. And honestly makeup and paint/markers are similar. Beginners might be drawn to the cheaper stuff because they might not have money to invest in hobbies, but if they can buy mid range products (look at reviews and brands) and build towards higher end products until they have a tool kit of items they reach for daily. Color tones, pigment, quality, longevity, blending, etc will all vary depending on brand, prince point and formula. When I started exploring makeup in high school I bought from the drug store. Doesn't mean there aren't good products at the drugstore- things are better quality now than back then, but I just thought all makeup was really hard to learn. I saved up for a nicer eye shadow palette and pigment was amazing, blending was a dream and the formulas felt different. Higher quality brushes were soft and fluffy which meant it didn't hurt to do my makeup. Years later- you could give me kid makeup (like the crappy 'toy' kind) and I could manipluate it like normal. It takes more skill, experience, and patience which is why I would never recommend it to anyone unless it was just for a good laugh. But it's a great tool to get someone experienced out of their zone and 'go back to basics.'
I had a friend. Wealthy, very talented and artistic. But he go to med school. And he use art for clout. He has all the high end materials and even have tons of followers.
I exclusively use material from Dollar Tree when drawing traditionally. I mostly just sketch and sometimes ink it, but I never color it, I instead just scan the work and finish it digitally for color. Also I choose to draw on the reverse of the index cards, and I'll use binder clips to make a nice little pad I can take around.
Now get this, I made a LIGHT BOX with stuff from Dollar Tree. I was lucky enough to find a picture frame which was basically a clear folded piece of flat plastic, and I pointed a flashlight through the clear base and at the underside of the paper. Adding a mirror on the bottom reflects more light up at the page. Use binder clips or tape to hold the papers together and that actually works. If the light's not bright enough, get another flashlight or darken the room.
Dollar Tree has greatly expanded their arts and crafts section, they actually sell individual acrylic paints now! Also small canvases, wood, brushes, etc.
I would love to send a selection to you Jazza and see how much better they are... Or if they even are better.

That was really encouraging to hear you talk about the paints like that. For a long time the cheap tubes of paint & brushes was all I could afford but gave up for a while coz while it looked good, it wasn't great especially on canvas board. I'd wondered why I didn't want to create since everyone loved my pictures but I wouldn't be surprised if this has been a factor.
This still shows how some creativity and practice can let you still make some really cool art with cheap materials.
I’d kill to see you revisit water based markers one day, but trying using a waterbrush as a blender. Also don’t use felt tip water based markers, go for ones like Crayola that have a sponge tip, because the felt tips are way more rough on paper than the sponge tips.
I love how he used the packaging as a mixing palette and then moved on to use one of the canvases.

I like getting the cheap stuff, because 90% of the things I work on are prototyping.
_My favorite thing there is the giant sheets of project board, I can prototype wood furniture with that stuff using a little tape and origami magic._

The takeaway i got from this video is that its the person/artist that make great art, but good tools will allow for more expression and creativity if you know what your doing.
Those turned out so cool! I go to Dollar Tree pretty frequently and I always stop by their art section and think about what I could do with what's there. I like the idea here of doing that and having some fun! Great job to you both and great idea for the challenge!

Mei Yu has done some amazing stuff with all kinds of cheap art supplies, going years back. I think she has a great attitude about art being an accessible pursuit despite budget restrictions. As a kid, I used every scrap of paper and every writing implement I could get my hands on, and despite having had the chance to work with other media, to this day I still prefer good old pencils and pens over anything else.
I love the fact that you spend time using everything that you were sent and that shows you love art and to make art no matter the time spent. I love that passion and I wish I could have that patience and passion without getting distracted i could probably make so much and have my art look so much better with time.
I work at dollar tree! Dollar Tree is an amazing place to find cheap supplies for anything from wood work to knitting.

Just a tip for the future when drawing POC characters (particularly dark-skinned ones): the palms of the hands should typically be a lighter tint than the rest of the skin, even when in shadow.
I realize it might have been a stylistic choice, but I don’t think it would have been too out of place with the style that you did, and it’s a good practice to model for white artists without much experience making art of POCs.
That may have been the limitations of the supplies. I don’t think he was able to lighten anything once it was put down.

Budget goes out the window as soon as you enter the store. Haven't seen some of these yet at my store but have used the small canvases for painting. Love the end pieces. Nicely done.
One of my favorite things at dollar tree is the scultpy clay that they have. And the poster board is the best to use for spray paint space paintings :)

My art teacher used to tell me that fun triumphs anything in art and that you can tell when someone had fun or not through the drawing itself, so any art supplies seem to be pretty cool, not to mention you did quite a good job with your drawings and paintings, they look quite cool.
Ahhhh Dollar Store art supplies. There is a huge hit or miss with these items sometimes. My fav is when they sometimes carry name brand items! It’s rare but a plus if you can find them.
I think one of the best things about art is that the supplies dont really matter, rather its cheap or expensive you can make a masterpiece that fits your budget

I think videos like this kind of inspire me, because when I grew up this was a majority the best option for my family, and yeah I had to really push myself to improve with the cheaper materials. Not everyone could see the value but through the years I eventually could afford better art supplies and it shows that even if the young artist is poor that can defy their odds and create amazing works that will hopefully pull them out of the position of poverty. This is awesome thank y'all for doing this.

Sometimes, the Dollar Store gets some surprisingly good stuff. Here in Canada, the Dollarama store I go to recently received some big 473ml jars of acrylic paint for 4$ each. I got a bunch just to see and it turns out the paint in them has about the same consistency as soft ice cream. They also got some big canvases that just need a bit of extra tightening with wedges. Pretty good for the price.
My favourite pencils and sketchbook come a dollar store. The only problem was they stopped making the sketchbook

I usally get my art supplies from the dollar store mostly because we don’t have art stores here but I love watching pros being able to make good art with cheep art supplies it makes me feel better as a artist

Only one thing that I can nitpick with the art-girl bubblegum piece is, that everyone has white palms. Your darker skin won't match up with your palms.

@ 8:14 you can see the markers. It looks like he used the lighter shade and then he went back in to add shadows. I don't know if he just messed up, if it was an over sight or a style choice. Jazza has never colored palms different tones than the rest of the body- doesn't matter the skin color. You can see it on videos from 7 years back too.
its stylized, most artist even black artist on youtube with similar styles don't color in the palms differently.

Art doesn't have to be 100% accurate, sometimes if the only thing you chase is accuracy you end up with ugly art

I've wondered how many people have tried art using spectacularly bad art supplies and decided art is miserable or they just suck without realizing that crappy supplies are often worse than no supplies. It's sad...
That’s still a wrong assumption, because as soon as you’ve developed a good taste in art from observation you’ll have trouble accepting your low learning curve.
The fact that you haven’t yet learned or fully understood all the basics like anatomy, line strength, composition, color theory, etc. is the actual main problem, not the tools you use.
A picture that is flawed from the start due to lack of knowledge will still be flawed even with the best supplies.
Everybody can make art - but making good art takes a lot of devotion towards learning.
I myself retired as an illustrator since the gap between taste and knowledge had just become too large to statisfy my mind.
That dollar tree made me chuckle. I was expecting an epic dragon or something, and this was not what I expected.😂😂😂

Okay, a few things. Absolutely love the results. But um....Jazza, buddy, why is the palm of the artist the same colour as the rest of her body? That is not how palms work. I know there were colour limitations but your could have used a lighter marker and then applied the correct colour with the pencil. Just a teeny thing that bugs me.
Also, two of my fav art youtubers coming together in a collab. You peeps should do this more often! What a treat.
Lastely, could you review Camlin art supplies please? I have heard they are darn cheap but pretty good.

For people who don’t have money, dollar tree supplies may be all they can afford. Don’t let anyone tell you you need expensive tools to be an artist. Being an artist is what you do, not the cash you spend. I’ve seen better art done by a man in the mall with a no. 2 pencil and a sheet of printer paper than a guy using oil paints and canvas worth hundreds.
Hi Jazza and SuperRaeDizzle! Dollar Store Art is my specialty, since I only use Dollar Store supplies for my daily Bob Ross landscapes!
You're right that the Dollar Store acrylic isn't the best, but it can be fun working within those limitations.
While following along with Bob, I've had to adjust the wet on wet Oil paint techniques to those Acrylic paints.
I recommend working with those paints as thick as you can, and tapping more than brushing on the color.
I am so happy that Jazza is not the only one who uses the end of a paintbrush to mix paint.

This was cool! Dollar tree has actual acrylic and tempura paint in bottles too! They may not have been in the dollar tree Rae went to, but they’re surprisingly not the worst for being dollar store grade. My mom uses them for her paint pours and they come out surprisingly lovely. She’s started using higher grade paint WITH them now and they look even better but, overall I was actually surprised when I saw the first couple ones she did.
I didn't expect you to use the paint more like Gouache. I love the end result. 😊
