You are the man! Very helpful. After a friend wanted to charge me 900$ to do the rear main seal when that was not the case. You saved me from getting screwed.

I’ll take jack stands over a ramp any day! Your truck will never roll off a jack stand like they will a ramp.

Same issue here. replaced the gasket and still dripping. Added UV dye to try and pinpoint the leak and it was the plug. Cut a 3/8" Allen to make the insert and when I went to install the hex, the plug turned. Mine was finger tight so no wonder why it was leaking. Instead of just tightening the plug, I pulled it. My plastic washer was in perfect condition. Cut it off, installed the O-ring and Teflon tape. NO LEAKS. Works like a champ. If you don't have a Harbor Freight near you as I do, Tractor Supply has a small bag of these exact O-rings in their hydraulic section that are rated for oils and such. The key bolt on the side of the block was spraying oil out of mine tonight. Mobile mechanic came out, it was a little loose, he tightened it and seems to have stopped the leak.

The hex plug on my 2007 3500HD has a plastic tapered seal with a break in it. It’s not a soft rubber o ring. I can’t find a replacement so I used rtv sealant with the old seal and screwed it back in. I’ll know in a few days if it worked.

This is very helpful. Just did my oil pan gasket and the gasket for that oil cooler block and discovered the same piece is leaking, luckily mine is 2wd so I don’t have to worry with a driveshaft.

. I had the exact same problem down to the leaking bolt and leaking gasket (2014 GMC yukon). Following the instructions provided in the video, I was able to successfully replace the cooler gasket, which was readily available at my auto parts store, and went to get the o-ring from Harbor-Freight as described. Out of curiosity, I asked my GM dealer, and quite interesting, they do not sell the o-ring (or the man was unable to located it or unwilling to sell it), besides, even if they did, probably the same cheap plastic one instead of an upgraded version as seen here. Thank you for sharing.

Very helpful video. I ended up not needing to make the tool. I unbolted the oil cooler lines and put a block of wood between it and the oil pan. Of course, wrapped it with nylon to avoid any debris getting it those lines.

Watched this and several other videos on repairing the 5.3 oil cooler line block leak. In my case I have a 2010 Chevy Avalanche 4 wheel drive. I was able to move the front driveshaft out of the way after taking the U joint out of the yoke and pushing it back and then moving it to the side. Gave me enough room to use a 3/8 allen drive socket to remove the bolt. I removed the bolts holding the cooler line block first and then held the cooler line block in place with rubber tipped channel lock pliers. The bolt was not torqued very much and came right off. I cleaned the bolt and the hard plastic seal was cracked and came off in 3 pieces. My Avalanche has 125k and has lived its whole life in a hot dry climate. I used a new o-ring and a new GM oil cooler gasket. No leaks since and I was surprised how easy this was. Some of the really rusty vehicles I have seen here on UA-cam would have made this job much more difficult.

Hi ladd, great video, but I have a 2010 Yukon xl and have to change the whole line. I do have oil all around the oil pan . I know the cooler line is leaking, and I already did the oil pump, pick up tube O ring and oil pressure sensor and filter. After about ten mins of running oil pressure drops from 40 to almost zero. I just wanted to change the cooler to see if it’s a leak in it causing the oil pressure drop. I still should prob do the pan gasket but do not want to take all this stuff down to drop the pan. Possibly the oil bipass valve in the pan that goes bad on these LS engines too. But I can’t snake the old cooler out, let alone what looks like a night mare to snake the new one in. Is there a way to snake this cooler out? Thank you so much, Kevin NJ
