720 was a massive game changer, the bar was raised and everyone was on catch up. I think it was a massive misunderstanding by McLaren and as you said it was the dealers fault but everyone was respectful to each other and that makes a whole heap of difference. Once again great videos as always.

In all fairness, I did NOT realize the situation with the car from the dealership (it was pre-production etc) and even though McLaren's comment wasn't very savvy, it makes waaaaayyyyyy more sense understanding that part of the story. I don't feel that was clear enough in the first video. But maybe I missed it? Glad you made a point to spell that out in this one. But again, it does make McLaren's response far more sensible, if not necessarily advisable.

I'm not some Brooks super fan, if I'm honest I think we probably aren't anything alike, but we both love cars. To act like Brooks isn't the number one person providing free advertising for Mclaren on UA-cam is just denying reality. Drag Times is why I fell in love with the 720s, and got me super interested in the brand. Complaining about drag racing is like kicking someone out for putting ketchup on a hot dog, ie, about as snobby as you can get.

Good for McLaren. The company's management has made a lot of questionable decisions in recent years, and the last thing they needed was an unforced PR error like this. Now they just need to focus on whittling down their product offerings and production numbers a bit to better match demand.

I think what you said around 9 min about the Hybrid between UA-camr/owner/Journalist is right. And a good example in my opinion is Matthias Malmedie. He has been a long time moderator for the more fun orientated TV show GRIP on German TV but also does his own Videos on UA-cam where he talks more in-depth and about the mechanics and how everything feels for him. Plus he is a pretty good driver. And actually, he made a video with the Elva in Moncao and had the clearance from McLaren to do so.

    Good video as ever Robert.
I think that the situation was handled perfectly by Brooks for doing what McLaren asked in the beginning and didn't then shot them down later by the comments made. I'd like to think that this was respected by McLaren for staying quiet and letting the grass grow a bit & see what happened.
The response and reply by McLaren was good and cleared up the situation without too much fluffin'
In this day and age UA-camr's have way more influence than any magazine. Yes there are The Good, The Bad & The Ugly but clever people know how's telling the truth.

I think it is great that it turned out this way and if a Robert Michell video helped McLaren take this action, then good for you for helping them out.
I actually think the original sin is with McLaren. Somewhere in their culture, they produced a senior exec that is a stupid jerk. Good that they smelled the rubber burning and pulled back and did some damage control. The fact it was a reaction to revolt is revealing. Let's hope they are learning from the much needed slap in the face. They make an awesome car that is great to own if you can accommodate big expenses and massive depreciation with your awesome drive.

@@RobertMitchell True, that sometimes happens. Generally the VP goes in the penalty box.
What also happens a lot is there is a corporate culture that is widespread among the execs. At some point they get called out for being arrogant and it looks like it will hurt earnings. They circle the wagons, do damage control and then all parrot the new message. Only time will tell which one it is with McLaren.

I’ve chatted with several Mclaren owners (including the one in my avatar pic) in this neck of the woods, its drag times that sell that brand, because they aren’t losing me in my vehicles around corners on our mountain roads until their is a straightaway and no one else around (then they are out of gas by then)
I like a number of there historic produces because of the founder and the kiwi’s I’ve meet who adore him, like another hero of mine Rod Millen...they are really a beautiful vehicle, but like Robert has covered the marketing and business focus seams off now. Like they are trying “if there is a will there’s a way,” and “Field of Dreams” type BS , instead of exclusive product with a potential higher adoption rate because of country of origin and other previously established brand differentiation... that the current management can only ruin!

    • @RobertMitchell
      @RobertMitchell  3 роки тому

That's exactly it Layton, whether you like it or not drag times sell supercars. People always want the newest quickest car, and that's the way it's been for awhile. Not every super car owner looks at this solely, but I would say that the vast majority do. :-)

Costumer service in the U.K. is still having a major impact on the brand, cars do go wrong, it’s how you are dealt with personally when things do go wrong.
Mclaren chain of command and the number of people needed to sort and resolve issues makes the whole process very long winded and somewhat tiresome.
On my 3rd McLaren but not sure I will buy my 4th , unless McLaren can resolve and significantly improve on how customers are treated once the car has been sold to them.

When did this happen? Like the apology aspect? Cuz I wonder if between this, and Doug DeMeros video on McLaren if maybe they are learning something.
Doug made a video that echos some statements I remember in a video you made in this channel about how McLaren us just churning out new models and "special" cars, killing thier current owners resale value and causing people to stray from the brand. I love McLaren, of the big brands, them and Koenigsegg are the best looking and performing cars in my opinion. But lately they just seem to be aiming the shotgun at thier own foot and squeezing. I really hope they take some of this to heart, reverse thier thought process, make thier limited cars actually limited and jump headfirst into the world of UA-cam automotive journalism, because it's the future. I really want to see the brand around, I love seeing Tavarish and vTuned rebuilding thier cars as much as I love seeing thier new cars be reviewed by Doug. Clearly they can build good stuff that people want, they need to embrace that, embrace the community, and more importantly, respect the community. That's how you grow and gain a valuable fan base.
A McLaren will be my ultimate prize for myself one day, I hope.

I came to know this company as a cool company which focuses on engineering instead of marketing (opposite of Ferrari), and tries to make as many cool cars as possible. From this general impression, that asshole VP seems to be the outlier.
And this is an era when someone does or says something, they like to double down on it, and never admit their wrong. The fact that they admitted it, and owned their mistake for whatever reason, already puts them into the better 10%.
