two months ago I went to the ring, just to relax. When I walked by Apex, the E46 was parked outside and I had to see it IRL. It's beautiful. George was in the garage came out, and took some time explaining what had been done to the car and what the plan is moving forward. That was so cool in a relaxed atmosphere considering all the "stress" that used to be around the garage when you stopped by just a year ago. Really appreciated he took the time to chat and show me the car.

I am always interested in the money standpoint... Could never afford it, but knowing what is costs is nice.. And we all know it going to be informative, not bragging 😉
In depth aero while keeping a clean profile and in depth suspension talk would be very appreciated. The later is what most ppl really do wrong, slam the car, reduce shock travel, compromise suspension arms angles, incorrect spring rates etc etc. For the E46 is think a lot of gain can be had with underbody work, the font bumper can extend a flat surface to the wheel wells with difusors leading to it. Here is where vented fenders from Mkrennsport or Karbonius can really work. For the rear a sealed diffusor that incorporates the 4 pipes would be nice, from the diff back. Varis is the only outfit that has a 2 piece difusor like this and is maybe worth looking into. Love the videos. Cant wait for the rest Robert, thank you.
As always, really like your approach! A lot of people get lost to more and mire bigger and flashy things to look better in front of others, you build your stuff the way you personally like. I also believe that being the fastest on the ring is not that entertaining in the long run but having a car that feels alive is worth way more in the end. Thats how the e46 will end up I think. As you said, not build for the very best possible lap time but to be a blast to drive. I like to drive my e87 130i with a couple of mods that make it drive and feel nice. I am not the fastest on the ring by far but I have a blast with the manual trans, NA R6 and rwd 👌
Nice to see you back once again. Whether it will be 22 or 4 videos (before pause) - I sure enjoy a bit of calm tech talk. And rational talk about one of thw most irrational things: Trackcars ❤
Curious on the suspension choice. For me the definition of a RingTool would be - enjoy the drive to Adenau/eiffel, do some TF, go back the same day. And take the car out on other weekends on twisty roads. Does it really need a motorsport line damper (too harsh, not enjoyable?), or would RS be a better choice (too weak)?
Robert god bless your heart I'm happy to see you back to UA-cam with force, you have nice delivery when you speak brother 👌 is it possible that when the e46 build is done, that you do a video detailing the cost of the whole project? I say this not to be intrusive, but so the video can be a reference point to when i or someone wants to take on a similar project, thanks mate ❤
Yes! We will definitely do it and what we will do is try and come up with ideas how we could’ve done this project more economically for somebody to still enjoy it and not lose so much of the driving experience. A lot of what I’m doing is to try and make the cars clean as possible but where could We save in non-diminishing areas.
Nice little catch up video! With the next one as someone who doesn’t know much about suspension I’d like to understand why say kw v’3 for example would be a better choice than something like bc racing, H&R equivalent’s! And would the type of car change what type of suspension you may need for the same purpose? Say George has a mini and Tom has a m3 would a different type of suspension suit something better for track use?
Another Great video, enjoyed watching 🤗👍🏻 - would like to know more about underbody airflow, how to reduce lift, air around the wheels and air inside the wheel arches. Would like to know how much the height of the front splitter above the tarmac affects the car’s stability at high speed sections. That is an issue I assume reduces the stability of my track car, that I get to much air under my front end. Also, what if you reduce the gap from front splitter to tarmac, how does it impact the effectiveness of a rear end diffuser? What about side splitters to keep the air under the car and not let it out sideways, but directing it to the rear end diffuser.. Would love to hear your thoughts on this Robert 🤓
Suspension question: how to tune compression / rebound in relation to anti roll bar & tire pressure? My understanding is that suspension tuning is for corner entry and exist, anti roll bar is for mid corner, and tire pressure is quite tricky, a lot of times it just depend on how strong is the side wall. Would love to hear your thoughts!
That might be its own video! But I like it and we’ve noted it. Some of it we can touch on the suspension video, but I think we’re going to be doing a complete chassis set up. Talk about the dynamics of how everything works together.
I would like to ask JRZ: Managing roll rate. 1. How do you discern the difference in rebound and compression adjustments in regard to slowing roll rate? Adding rebound can keep the inside wheel from extending, keeping the car flat. Adding compression can add roll resistance on the outside corner. But how do you discern which adjustment is needed as a driver in regard to roll. 2. How do you balance valving with gas pressure (outside of cavitation) in regard to vehicle support? 3. How do you manage valving as a roll stiffness contributor along with spring and bars? Does JRZ target specific natural frequencies for each chassis that the valving range is based on? 3. What is the consensus on low vs high speed velocity crossover (how many in/sec?)
Am currently rebuilding a 280z with full techno toy tuning suspension parts which allows a ridiculous amount of adjustability. Finding a decent suspension setup video is proving a bit of a challenge so looking forward to the JRZ video for sure.
Really looking forward to the video series and the whole vision. The generations of M3 clubsport builds. I’ve had two e36s, a e46, and now a f80. I miss how the e36 felt the most. In the US they are criminally overlooked bc of the engine we got. But, I have to say im addicted to how capable the f80 is on track with very mild modifications. Would love to get your and George’s perspective on what mods made the most difference on the f80/82. Something simple like top ten bang for buck or mod in this order.
Low mileage on older cars isn't always a good thing, I bought an Alfa 75 that had been stored (and maintained) for at least 5 years, but as I started driving it all the engine seals gave out, this was after replacing all suspension bushings because they were perished. And I should've known better, I had the same experience some years ago when I bought a car that had been sitting for a while...
Hey Rob, good to hear you and misha are still talking, I was under the impression that you two have fallen out. I'm really glad, thanks and have good one!
Come on now I can’t do a summit without Misha! That would violate some treaty between the Russians and Americans that I’m not quite sure the name of :-)
The thing about the cost of stuff like this is when you can see where the money went and why, like some stuff may be practically hand built, and the hours and craftmanship, experience, expertise that have gone into it, you can appreciate it. Just buying an expensive car off the shelf and filming it doesn't show any of that. Often the most interesting bits are in the details, even bits that aren't normally seen - like the underbody stuff on the GT2RS MR.
@@MikkoSaarenpaa-kn7jh that’s true. I should probably beef up the rear shocks to hold the weight of those briefcases these brands are going to be sending over
Thanks for another great video. General question for the next 3 question blitz: Do you have any other summer plans at Apex? You shared your plan to reduce what Apex does back in January, we know you are back from Florida and focused on the E46 build. That's alot when stacked on top of your normal job, but simply curious if you have anything else on your ring agenda.
It has been said that the stiffer the vehicle chassis allows you to run lower spring rates. my question to jrz. Have you seen a change on “before vs after “where some stitch welds a chassis or adds a roll cage? IE you made a change to damper or spring rates do to stiffer chassis and change in driving dynamics.
@@RobertMitchell I'm studying Motorsport Engineering, in Germany that is. In the 1st Semester at the moment, so it's currently the basics like Math, Physics, bit of Electrical Engineering, but there will be more interesting subjects later on! 😁
Especially when someone goes in and out of the gravel traps on the Ring and chucks gravel all over the track, which following cars then throw up at the ones behind them.
Sooo looking forward to this build series ❤. Did you ever do a rebuild series on the GT2 RS MR after the accident?, if so I seem to have missed it?. And as for the PPF issue?, it’s a no brainer for such a build on the E36 that’s going to be used/but not abused on the track.
yeah, I really wanted to do more with the gt2 but the job became a bit of an unorganised mess from the workshop lol.... couldn't ever guess when they were going to work on it. never got calls when milestones were being hit and took a year longe than planned so it was kind of a hit and miss with filming
I like the twist in the video rls format for the e46 build. The money part, why not talk about it cuz it is what it is. The PPF, I mean really, who cares? It's your car, do w/e you want and I think the majority would PPF considering the all the work and the lvl you're trying to achieve. As an e46 original owner myself, I'm living vicariously through you in the build, wish I can do the same. I do know I have a "classic" car on my hands so gonna keep it unless I get a stupid money offer. Funny here in the bay area they're becoming more and more rare (e46s), still plenty of brand new/new m3s/4s.
I agree you’re very much going towards having a top end classic on your hands. Really cool that you were the original owner and I think that’s gonna be something in the handful of yours. That is quite hot after. Don’t ever sell it unless you get the right money.
It would be good if the money conversation could happen, specifically with the "you could also do..." possibilities for parts. I have a couple of ideas of what I'd like to build, but not the foggiest what or how to calculate the costs...
Who wouldn’t PPF a car after a paint job like that. I added it to my whole front end, lower doors, and quarters on my e46. I even added it over existing touched up chips. Finding a good painter can be difficult also.

Just gonna keep commenting saying how good it is to see you uploading again. Great content.
Again, can’t thank you enough for being on the channel!
glad to see you still making content, hope to get back to Germany and visit you and Misha
Haha, Robert, I called a pause but not after the announcement video! Come back to us!
I'm really looking forward to the JRZ vid.
Sounds like a lot of good stuff in the works, nice to see you making content again!
happy to be out here.. looking forward to the trip to holland tomorrow as well
Curious on the suspension choice.
As always, much to learn from Robert’s thinking.
Another Great video, enjoyed watching 🤗👍🏻
- would like to know more about underbody airflow, how to reduce lift, air around the wheels and air inside the wheel arches.
@@RobertMitchell looking forward to it!👍
Great video Robert. Bring cocktails back into the game! 😊🔥 Tier 1 as always!🤘🏻
Hi Robert! Downforce and diffusers are always interesting😀
Greetings from the Netherlands , Robert you make me Excited for the car .
👍🏻👍🏻
You’re not too far away! I hope that you get out sometime to check it out in person
Robert's sporting the new snack resistant body 👍
Great idea for the episodes feeding into eachother. Appreciate the iteration through our feedback
Definitely Jrz and underbody aero videos please
I would like to ask JRZ:
Managing roll rate.
So good to have you back. thanks
hey Robert, glad to see you’re back on YT. looking fit mate 👍
This is awesome, Robert! Can’t wait to see what you did to the E46. Looking forward to the E36 as well!
Tier 1 since day 1!
im having fun planning the 36 right now for sure. Proper Tier One!!!
This is going to be REALLY,really fun.
JRZ is great. Tractive Suspension is a very interesting company too for a suspension video, they supply to Pagani, Dallara, Donkervoort, etc.
I ran the Dallara a handful of years ago on track when I did a factory visit. awesome car and I enjoyed the suspension
Yes, please do a video on underfloor airflow
Hey Rob, good to hear you and misha are still talking, I was under the impression that you two have fallen out. I'm really glad, thanks and have good one!
Misha is a great friend and there has not even as much as a raised voice between us!
Great to hear what we going to see about the built of the car. It would be interesting to learn how a flat undertray helps with the stability of cars😊
that is for sure something that we are going to talk about!!
Did you really say "I bought 13 dream cars this year"!? That´s many videos I´m looking forward to see 😲
Didnt you promise build videos on this channel? It went silent again...
I think you should also bring back the summit vids, but with George as co-host 👍🏻
Idea for the dashboard, put a card slot for the season ticket there so you don't have to fiddle with putting it into a pocket or wallet or whatever.
my man!
Or a space for the upcoming pile of UA-cam influencer cash? 😉💰💵
@@MikkoSaarenpaa-kn7jh that’s true. I should probably beef up the rear shocks to hold the weight of those briefcases these brands are going to be sending over
Would love the airflow management chat! E46 would be really hard as the rear suspension is quite exposed and would hard to design around.
Thanks for including my comment!
Thank you for bringing the good conversation!
Hi Robert! Another great video! Looking forward to the next video! Always a pleasure watching this channel!
Is a pleasure having you on it Mr Jacob
@@RobertMitchell thanks Robert, but just Frederik is more than ok 😉
Good to see You Robert 😊
Could you get some input from them on stiffer suspension with a smaller swaybar or a softer suspension with a bigger swaybar?
we will for sure get into that. we have that kind of talk lined up also for car set up talks
Big interest in this, this feels like the old school king argument (do it with springs, or do it with bars).
Loving the new videos and excited to see the car as it progresses, have you kept the rear window motors in place?
Bit sad that the notifs are coming smack in the middle of the exam period, but then it just means more to look forward to after. Keep them coming 💯
Hey Moe, what are you studying for?
@@RobertMitchell I'm studying Motorsport Engineering, in Germany that is. In the 1st Semester at the moment, so it's currently the basics like Math, Physics, bit of Electrical Engineering, but there will be more interesting subjects later on! 😁
@@moe_lester45 man that’s really cool! I wish you luck.
I know there’s a lot of fantastic directions you can go with what you’re learning
@@RobertMitchell Looking forward to the future as well, but one step at a time :)
Liking the idea of the dash display.
Did you say you’d bought 13 cars?
Great vid dude, it was ‘tier 1’ 😘
13 dream cars, lol. And I’m now selling VPNs and vitamin supplements
PPF on a track car makes tons of sense. I don't know how that can be questioned. Seems like a great candidate for it.
Especially when someone goes in and out of the gravel traps on the Ring and chucks gravel all over the track, which following cars then throw up at the ones behind them.
under floor air flow management wud be cool.
Hi Robert,
thanks for the insights again :)
Love the range of cars in the background!
thanks Frank!! For a long time I had way too much of the same, nice to have a bit of variety
airflow management video would be fun.
Please talk about the ride height adjustment difference between where the whole shock moves vs traditional spring adjustment
Please!
Thanks answering my question! Regarding suspension, can you/JRZ touch on divorced vs full/true coilovers?
let's do the video on the underfloor aero! bough the 4RS parts for the GT4 and now want to do the same for the GT3
Keep them coming, i’ll be watching! 🏁
Under body airflow is huge!! Take away the under tray, do 100mph up the autobahn. Then bolt it back on and go again. The difference will be huge.
Always nice guy! Well spoken. You should know my VW SP2 1.9
Sure I will put PPF on your E46! My E30 Touring got PPF …
Smart man;-)
Sooo looking forward to this build series ❤.
Ahh….thats ok…I imagine the rebuild was stressful enough without the added hassle of filming. Good to see it in the background though, 😊
Tier 1 🙌
It would be good if the money conversation could happen, specifically with the "you could also do..." possibilities for parts. I have a couple of ideas of what I'd like to build, but not the foggiest what or how to calculate the costs...
Who wouldn’t PPF a car after a paint job like that. I added it to my whole front end, lower doors, and quarters on my e46. I even added it over existing touched up chips. Finding a good painter can be difficult also.
Back to our scheduled programming 😎
That is all well said, cars are money pits, you have to keep that in mind 😅
