  • Top 8 Questions & Answers about Orchid Keikis
    An orchid keiki is a baby replica of the mother plant, a clone with the exact same DNA, reproduced asexually-not by pollination. This new baby plant will display the same flower pattern, shape, colors, and texture as the mother plant.
    Keiki means “the little one, child, or baby” in Hawaiian, which is where the term originated.
    When it comes to orchid propagation, many questions arise. Below are the most common questions about keikis and detailed answers on how to care for them.
    The 8 questions are:
    1) Why do keikis form?
    2) What do keikis say about the health of my orchid?
    3) What's the difference between a keiki and a flower spike or new root growth?
    4) How do I get rid of (inhibit) keikis?
    5) What is keiki paste and how does it work?
    6) When do you remove keikis to repot them?
    7) How long does it take keikis to grow?
    8) How do you repot keikis?

    I have a phalanopsis orchid that has one healthy keiki. It has been attached for around 2 years because I didn’t realize I could remove it. Now the keiki has 2 flowers in bloom. Do you recommend I separate the keiki once it has finished blooming or just leave the plant as it is? Please share the pros and cons of both are options. The mother plant looks healthy to me.

    I’ve had good luck with spider plant “keikis” (term used just as a comparison) when I put the babies on soil and carefully pin down the stem to secure the little plant atop the soil. Could this be done with the orchid keiki that appears on the flower stem? I know the flower stem won’t bend as much as the spider plant’s, but place the pot on a ledge above the mother plant and encourage the keiki to adopt that media?

    If my orchid had two keiki's but doesnt like its conditions and i have it in the big chunky bark orchid medium is it ok/recommended to repot the mother plant into something more favorable and then pick the keiki's off when they are ready and stick them into the new pot with the mother? If so, considering one of the keiki's has 4 leafs and 3 roots is there an amount of time i should wait after repotting before i pick it off? (like to give the mother time to adjust etc)

    Hi, your orchids look beautiful!
    I would really appreciate if you can help me with the problem with one if mine orchids.
    It almost died, it lost all of its roots. I have put it upside down with leaves inside the water. After few months it started growing healthy roots, and a basal keiki. Now the roots have grown big and there are 9 of them in total. I was thinking that it may be the time to report it, but not sure how to do that, since the mother and keiki are growing on the opposite sides. The roots of the keiki is actually common for both keiki and mother orchid, in the place where it should be separated. Is there a way to do something to save them both? Or to give them some more time? I'm afraid to hurt them, they have had lot of hard time lately.
    Thank you!

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  2 роки тому

      Hi Tijana, thank you for watching my video and for leaving a comment. I appreciate it. Since it is a basal keiki, then don't separate it from the mother orchid. It's almost impossible to keep the basal keiki alive. Usually when the keiki is on the spike, it's easy to separate them. But when the keiki is on the bas eof the orchid, it's too near the main stem. By keeping them together it won't hurt the orchid, and they grow this way in nature. You'll just have a bushier orchid in the long run.

    My Keiki is blooming and the mother plant has started spike and bloom too. Should I just let it grow?

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  3 роки тому

      Hi Richard, That would depend on the root system and leaves. Are they healthy and plentiful? If yes, you can let both the flower spike and the keiki grow together. This will put a little strain on the orchid, but it can handle it. When the keiki has three roots (or so) you can cut it off. If the root system of the mother orchid is struggling, cut the keiki off now, so the orchid can have some energy to get that spike up. If the roots and leaves are in horrible shape, cut both off and let the plant recuperate. Thanks for watching.

    Hi, I am new to your site and new to orchids. I recently purchased an orchid from a grocery store. It was in a clear glass vase with no medium at all just all the roots in an empty plastic container. The instructions said no direct sunlight and water every 3 days by soaking in water for 30 minutes. I did not put it in any medium just left it the way it was and watered the way they said and it it just thriving. There is new growth from the main plant and has 2 kaikeis both coming out of the bottom of the crown they have roots. How can I remove them without killing the mother? I just started to fertilize it once a month with a commercial fertilizer in the water ………..Thanks, Mike. Also I love your videos and I live in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

    Help..
    Mayb you can help me, cant find info on keikis with O roots. Bought an orchid from a groc store in great condition (phal) the flower kept its blooms for 2-3 monthes..yea. it was crazy so after the blooms finally fell, 2 keikis produced at the top of the stem, and both had blooms and leaves( yep, crazy again) so letting it do its thing, waiting on roots, now. 2 monthes still no roots but leaves are getting bigger and im getting new growth on one of them, not sure if its a leaf or stem yet, one keiki broke off by accident, but no roots so i had no choice but to try to propagate somehow by using damp sphagnum moss in a cup..but i dont know if thats ok..do u have a solution so i dont lose it?? Thank you, enjoyed your video very much.

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Peacemaker, Thanks for your comment. Grocery store orchids have tons of hormone stimulant that make them grow fast and keep producing blooms. That is why your orchid is blooming like crazy and producing so many keikis. They rebloom much more frequently than other orchids from orchid nurseries. The bad thing is that there are so many hormones, it's confused and only producing leaves, but no roots. Since one spike has already broken off, you did right in placing the whole keiki in sphagnum moss. It will grow roots in time, (*fingers crossed) but treat it Iike you would with a reuperating orchid with no roots. It's no different in that sense, except it's a bit weaker. If it is growing leaves naturally, the roots should come along with time. As soon as it's off the mother plant, the hormones will slow down and maybe it can catch up and figure out it needs to be producing roots. It could be a hit and miss though since the leaves aren't yet capable to provide all the nutrition that they need. Without good roots (or any roots) there's really no way to know if the keiki can make it. So you did the right thing and there really isnt much more to do. Just keep an eye on it.

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  2 роки тому

      Hi Ricky, Yes. You can leave the keiki on the flower spike until it has sufficent leaves and roots. Then cut it off. If still needs the nutrients from the mother plant. Once you remove the keiki, check the roots. It's not normal to have a keiki that has a flower spike, but it could be the amount of flowering hormone that nurseries give their orchids. It takes a while to get rid of all their products.

    Hi Amanda,
    My Phalanopsis orchid had 2 flower spikes.
    I did not cut these spikes. About 1 month ago, I noticed the lower leaves turning yellow and dropping off. I just realized that it may be magnesium deficiency. So I started using Epsom salt water weekly. I also shifted my orchids from my bathroom to outdoor in the shade about 2 weeks ago.
    I noticed keikes on both flower spikes 2 weeks ago. Now I notice new leaves on my orchids and the keikes are still growing well. Does it mean that my orchid was stressed inside the bathroom and suffered from magnesium deficiency ?

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Ananda, It certainly looks like that. The keikis could have been induced because of poor conditions but if the new leaves are now growing, it seems like the orchid likes it better now. The orchid can grow both the keiki and the new leaf at the same time, but it's going to need a little more water and fertilizer. Not much more, just a tiny bit more.

      I don't know if they sell it in Kuala Lumpur, but I really like KelpMax or Liquid Kelp (which has seaweed in it). They probably sell it but under a different name brand. So far, my Phals have responded best to it than any other. It has an extremely low NPK ratio, but on the good side, it has tons of other nutirents that most fertilizers don't. If they don't have that in Malaysia, you can try a 20-20-20 mix.
