She really did😂 i think the fairy actually took the spell away but Ella was so used to doing it by force that she broke her own spell without realizing it… idk if that made any sense but oh well😂

This movie was very appreciated by 11 year olds at the time - I remember doing a whole school presentation on it 😂 For some reason we watched it at school.
I love this movie so much! Apparently the book is really funny too, but much darker. Ella is in danger constantly from her gift. She even says something like "if you ordered me to cut my own head off I would have to do it."
God this is literally my favorite movie of all time. It’s so unserious and has insane nostalgia for me. I remember I read the book RELIGIOUSLY as a kid (and I still reread it today lol). In the book Ella and Char have so much chemistry and they know each other for years. My favorite scene is when they slide down the stair rails together and he catches her at the bottom and spins her until he gets dizzy 😭. And they fall in love through writing letters to each other even when she was away at finishing school (where she met Areida). Cannot express how much I love the book and the movie ugh.
And it’s funny considering that Carry Elwes was in both films, only this time Elwes portrays a villainous king in _Ella Enchanted_ who almost acts like Prince Humperdinck from _Princess Bride_
Heavy on the nostalgia! But I’d like to think that I’d still like it even if I watched it for the first time as an adult because it’s so silly (and has Anne Hathaway hehe)
I love this movie so much, arguably the best alternate take on Cinderella. Also, fun fact: the actress who played Hattie, the older of the stepsisters, has played a wicked stepsister in three different movies! It's apparently her favorite role to play.
If I had a nickel every time Cary Elwes appeared in a Fantasy fairytale comedy, I have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s crazy it happened twice already (e.g. Princess Bride and Ella Enchanted). Also it’s so surreal that this movie just came out 20 years ago and it’s still one of my favorite fantasy comedy films thanks to the performances of Anne Hathaway, Hugh Dancy, Cary Elwes, Minnie Driver, Aidan McArdle, Vivica A. Fox, and Eric Idle.
This is such a comfort movie. I love movies that dont take themselves seriously. They are just fun. Also Cary Elwes is just amazing as the uncle. Love him in this role.
I read the Ella Enchanted book before I ever saw the movie, so I felt so betrayed when this movie came out. But now that I'm older, I feel the way you do - I see both the book and the movie as separate entities that are each their own thing and I can enjoy them separately. That being said, I never really noticed how pick-and-choosy the rules of the obedience are in this movie until you pointed it out! And I also liked that you mentioned how Ella could technically obey orders by finding loopholes in the wording. She could! And in the book, she absolutely did. For example, in the book she went to finishing school and her music instructor said, "Sing louder, Ella" and Ella "obeyed" by shouting. And then when the instructor told her to sing more quietly, Ella dropped to a whisper. The book makes it very apparent that Ella is rebellious and clever and Hattie realized the need to give Ella very specific instructions or else she'd find a work around. Areida is mentioned in the second book because the main character of the second book is Areida's adopted sister. :) It was an OK book. I liked it because it was in the same universe but I've re-read Ella Enchanted probably 15 times by this point and I've only read the sequel twice.
Even though Ella was told to never tell anyone about her ‘gift’, Lucinda is her godmother so she can say what she wants to her about it. Even though Edger told Ella to never tell of the assassination plot, she could’ve got around that by loophole. Just tell Lucinda ‘don’t you realise this gift of doing as I’m told has lead me to commit crimes on behalf of people. It could lead to me to even being r-worded or executed? Take this away now!’
Those kinds of constraints (where you MUST obey) that you were talking about at 9:56 when two commands seem to have conflicting results can have devastating effects. "2001: A Space Odyssey" has that as a sub-plot as the HAL-9000 computer goes on a killing spree as a solution to dealing with conflicting orders. Obviously way to dark for a movie like this, but I could see a fantasy-horror flick having fun with it, lol ;)
Ella Enchanted was one of my favorite movies as a kid, I remember us renting it from the video store sooooo many times. Ella Enchanted is also one of my favorite books, Ive read it like 5 times and it never gets old ❤
I like this movie. Cute costumes, funny villain, nice music, a likable heroine, the story is easy to understand. It's part of my teenage-years like 13 going on 30, a good film 🙂
i watched the movie before reading the book so i feel like im able to appreciate the movie and book for themselves as separate entities vs if i had read the book first and had expectations.
I was OBSESSED with this movie. Pretty sure this was my first Anne Hathaway movie and my first Queen song. Such an iconic moment. Also, Ella being a youn social justice advocate feels so right.

(family, mean girls in school…) I’m now Raquelle from Barbie as a human.. so since 2020 it’s been timelines merging.. my life is a cross between Ella Enchanted x Barbie.. heyyy gorge! ❤
The question you should ask about Lucinda is : " Why is she still allowed to give gifts ? ". Good thing Ella doesn't live in our days with all the bullshits people say. I remember seeing an advisor of this movie in a teen girl magazine I had and it was described as " the live equivalent of Shrek " which is true when you see the mix between the Middle Age and our days so that explain why Slalem knows.
@@SophiaPhannn also about how Ella got rid of her gift, I think it worked only because she was really in danger and we all know that live is stronger than any form of magic
If you think about it. She easily could’ve looked at a mirror from the beginning or maybe when she was a child, and just say“Ella don't be obedient anymore”
I agree about your thoughts with the commands, but I’ve always had the head cannon that the gift follows the intentions of the words not necessarily the wording. Like when she was told to take the slippers, the intent was for her to steal them so that is what Ella had to follow.
When Ella was commanded to pick the bouquets, the stepmother intended them to be flowers, but she ended up picking poison ivy!!! So that theory doesn’t work unfortunately
when you said olive is a cute name it gave me flashbacks to most popular baby names this year and they were all olivia and liam with some charlottes and oliver’s too like every state it was crazy
Lucy Punch, who plays Hattie, has played an evil stepsister at least 3 times in 3 different adaptations of Cinderella or involving a Cinderella-like character. Loved her in the Tenth Kingdom too, which was like Once Upon a Time before OUaT.
I had the same experience with loving the movie as a kid and then reading the book in my school library! I love the movie so much but yea the book is on another level they are not the same story lol
You're thinking of Fairest. Gail Carson Levine wrote a second book in the universe about Areida's sister, a sort of Snow White, but not really. It's really good. I read all of her books as a kid, and I would LOVE for them to make an accurate movie adaptation. I miss Book Ella, who did fight back on her curses, finding alternative ways to interpret them wrong. None of this really happened in the book, and while I do enjoy the movie, like you said, the book in my opinion was so much better explored.
I’ve never read this book, but the audiobook for Fairest is a full cast production and it’s so cool to hear all the singing, I’ve listened to it enough to know some of the songs lmao
I love this move (even if i WISH we could get a more book-accurate version), its like a perfect fun little bite-sized fusion of Ever After and The 10th Kingdom - Including the actress playing Hattie who was also in 10th Kingdom
My twin recommended me, Rewatching Ella enchanted today, and then today she was watching into the woods , and keep in mind that she talked about both of these this morning, and they were both in this video
3:08 okay, I know this movie runs on fairytale logic, I get that, you know I'm not supposed to question everything. But...this movie is also satiring fairytales as well, so I must say that plot point does not make sense. Why would her mother tell Ella to keep the "gift" a secret from everyone. Like I know she shouldn't live a life of fear but we clearly see in the rest of the movie, especially when the stepsisters find out, they would immediately take advantage of it. Again, I know it runs on fairytale logic but it's also a satire.
This movie is such a cartoon but I love it. Its the only jukebox musical my tone deaf ass will sing along to. It's just so out of pocket I can't help but laugh. You just can't go wrong with Cary Elwes in a fantasy comedy. Anna Hathaway really doesn't age does she?! Some women like her and Sophia just got it like that.
I’ve actually seen some hate for the movie online, but I imagine they’re probably much older than the intended demographic. I generally see love towards this movie 🥰
I love how when british people say a word that ends with a vowel and a word that starts with a vowel they add an R in between. So the prince calls her Eller of Frell. or Ella Ruv Frell.
I’ll never forget when my dance teacher played “Somebody to Love” and when she asked who sang it I said Anne Hathaway 💀 And when she said it was Queen I thought she meant Beyoncé
This movie would have gone in a dark turn where the gift of obedience is taken advantage for awful things if you think about it. Btw thanks for always being consistent with the upload I love your videos ❤❤❤
You think that's why Ella's mother and Mandy didn't tell to her father ? That's a chance Ella doesn't live in our days with all the bullshit people say
I freakin love this movie ♥️♥️ I love the story and characters and the casting is amazing and it’s so hilarious as well.😆 I felt sorry for Ella the whole movie really I didn’t like Lucinda giving her a crappy gift and I didn’t like people taking advantage of her gift like making her murder Char and making her stop being friends with Areida 😢but great thing she overcame it broke the spell herself 😊 Also her and Char are so adorable together.🥰❤️ it’s another Anne Hathaway classic in my eyes and I’m so happy did a reaction to it and enjoyed Sophia 😁🩷 can’t wait to see what you do next 😊😉👍
If you love aburdist fiction and Hattie's actress, I would highly reccomend the show version of "A Series of Unfortunate Events." Lucy Punch's character doesn't come in until season two, but once she's there she steals the show
The one thing I didn't like about the movie, the only black mark I can consider, is that at no point does Ella ever apologize for her racist remarks. I know if you look you can see that she is in the background and I know it isn't Ella's fault... but I really REALLY wanted to see them reconcile... she is her best friend and I think it was a lost opportunity.
See, there is a simple solution to a lot of Ella’s problems, one her mother could have done as soon as Ella was old enough to understand the true power of her gift/curse. All her mother needed to say on her deathbed was “Ella, as your mother, I command you to obey my final words above all others: I order you to make your own decisions, using your best moral judgement, and live your life, from now until the end of time, as if Lucinda had never given you her gift.” I think that covers most of the bases. Yes, we wouldn’t have at least half the film, but the hubris in wishes, blessings, curses and magical laws often have loopholes that can be exploited, if you think about them for long enough. In Aladdin, for example, the Genie says “I can’t kill anybody, can’t make anyone fall in love and I can’t kill anyone…also, no wishing for more wishes.” OK, cool, four definitive rules. He uses his first wish to become a prince, which seems to solve one of his problems without breaking any rules…only, he doesn’t really do anything a prince would do, besides show up, look royal and woo Jasmine. There’s nothing bad or evil about his approach, it’s just not very effective, especially since Jafar recognizes him within a day. Which begs the question, why does he waste so much time? They HAD a connection in the marketplace, she doesn’t seem to care about ‘wealth or rank possessing’…so why not go directly to the source? Why not wish for the power to teleport anywhere instantly, and to be able to teleport anything he wishes wherever he wants? He could teleport to Jasmine, temporarily kidnap her (hey, I said direct, not entirely kosher), and bring her back to the oasis where Genie and the gang are hanging out. They’d have all the time in the world to talk, or at least until someone notices she is gone.
Then…EXPLAIN yourself! “Hey, Jasmine, how’s it going? Don’t worry, I promise to bring you home immediately after I ask you this question. So, look, we hit it off in the marketplace, I could tell…but I’m a peasant and you’re royalty and I don’t want to lie about being something I’m not. I’d really like this to go somewhere, but only if you do, too. I have a Genie here, explains the teleporting, right? He can grant me two more wishes, but the 3rd is already spoken for. If you like me and I like you, I’d be happy to use that 2nd wish to make our dreams come true…so what would that mean for you, for us?” Then, discuss! Or if she needs a day to think it over, cool, take her home, in and out of the palace in the blink of an eye, you can reconnect later. You can use that second wish to maximum effect, especially when she realizes Aladdin is NOT dead as Jafar claimed and they have some time to figure out the larger plot. Maybe teleport Jafar into the cave of wonders, just to buy some time and figure out what has been happening with the sultan? Without the Genie, Jafar isn’t much of a threat, especially when his snake-staff is busted. They can use the wish to create their own kingdom together, or to make themselves impervious to other magics, good or bad, or any number of other things that set them up nicely, as an equitable and informed couple.
Then, FREE THE GENIE! Eternal friendship and gratitude from a being that still retains more power and magic than Jafar could ever attain on his own. You’ve got a semi-phenomenal, nearly-cosmic powerhouse in your corner FOR-EVER…Jafar ain’t got nothing on this group after that. Ella would achieve her freedom in much the same way…she must follow her good judgement when it comes to the laws and practices of her kingdom, she can decide for herself if the commands given to her by her step-mother and sisters are worth her time and she can assert her will when appropriate or needed…without ever technically getting rid of the gift! She may not be 100% free, but she would be free-adjacent, certainly free enough to manage her life in such a way as to remove herself from the toxic elements of her siblings. Then it’s happily ever after…with Char probably noticing her much sooner in life thanks to her protesting. Great vid! Even as a boy, this film made me laugh and I thought Char and Ella were cute, certainly a lot less frustrating than other rom com’s of the same few years (Bridget Jones Diary, CHRIST…). Elwes can be surprisingly conniving, gotta love Steve Coogan (even as a snake), a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Giant Heidi Klum cameo (don’t care what you say or how much bigger she is than I am, I would shoot my shot, no matter the injury), and I think they kinda underutilized Eric Idol, but hey, we all need a paycheck sometimes, right? What’s next? 😊
Ella Enchanted was my FAVORITE book growing up (and fostered my now crippling addiction to historical romance novels) but young me couldn't get over how different the movie was. I think I even stopped watching it near the beginning when I first saw it. I don't know if having the movie be so divergent is good or not, because the only thing worse might be if it was more faithful to the book but butchered horrendously. At least this way it isn't even a comparison?
I was honestly so shook when I read it for the first, I read so many fantasy romance novels after that 😂 but I get what you mean! At least it’s not like the Percy Jackson movies 💀
@@SophiaPhannn Omg the shade 😂 Counting myself blessed I haven't actually read any Percy Jackson(I know the books are awesome, I just missed the train) because I could enjoy the movie...unlike 98% of the rest of the world lmao

"Law and Order" sound made me remember that Hugh Dancy is in the newer seasons of that show
My twin recommended me, Rewatching Ella enchanted today, and then today she was watching into the woods , and keep in mind that she talked about both of these this morning, and they were both in this video
I am OBSESSED with this movie
3:08 okay, I know this movie runs on fairytale logic, I get that, you know I'm not supposed to question everything. But...this movie is also satiring fairytales as well, so I must say that plot point does not make sense. Why would her mother tell Ella to keep the "gift" a secret from everyone. Like I know she shouldn't live a life of fear but we clearly see in the rest of the movie, especially when the stepsisters find out, they would immediately take advantage of it. Again, I know it runs on fairytale logic but it's also a satire.
Omg this is one of my fave films! It’s so much fun, and Anne Hathaway is just brilliant in it. And I never forget her rendition of Somebody to Love. ❤
here to say ella enchanted and enchanted are two completely different movies hehe
Do people really mix the two up??
@@SophiaPhannn i feel people could I mean atleast in my opinion I tried looking up enchanted and instead got Ella enchanted
HAHA I’m only 27!!! I’m just a baby 👶
Literally don’t go breaking my heart is playing on the radio RIGHT NOW
I don't know a soul who isn't a 90s baby who doesn't like this movie. This is a classic that a lot of people love
I’ve actually seen some hate for the movie online, but I imagine they’re probably much older than the intended demographic. I generally see love towards this movie 🥰
7:20 actually!! She’s part fairy!!
I love this movie. Her ball dress is amazing
I love how when british people say a word that ends with a vowel and a word that starts with a vowel they add an R in between. So the prince calls her Eller of Frell. or Ella Ruv Frell.
This movie is just fantasy camp & I’m glad at least a few other people can see & enjoy that. 💜
I work too, i can't enjoy Sophia and awesomeness on time, but 4 days late 😑 but better late than never applies here definitely 💯
OMG, I never knew Eric Idle was in this movie!! :D
I’ll never forget when my dance teacher played “Somebody to Love” and when she asked who sang it I said Anne Hathaway 💀 And when she said it was Queen I thought she meant Beyoncé
u asking how old the movie is and then saying 20 yrs.. just reminded me i’m turning 20😭
Yes! I knew you would do this one❤
5:55 Hugh Dancy is STILL dreamy i watched a livestream on a Hannibal anniversary panel in late April and he's still pretty cute^^
If you love aburdist fiction and Hattie's actress, I would highly reccomend the show version of "A Series of Unfortunate Events."
Lucy Punch's character doesn't come in until season two, but once she's there she steals the show
I watched it when it first came out! I honestly forgot she was in it, I should rewatch it 😅
you should watch St.Trintians it is a British comedy and it is wild
YES THIS
Favourite childhood movie❤
I love this movie so much I watched it muiltple times a week
The one thing I didn't like about the movie, the only black mark I can consider, is that at no point does Ella ever apologize for her racist remarks. I know if you look you can see that she is in the background and I know it isn't Ella's fault... but I really REALLY wanted to see them reconcile... she is her best friend and I think it was a lost opportunity.
agreed!!!
See, there is a simple solution to a lot of Ella’s problems, one her mother could have done as soon as Ella was old enough to understand the true power of her gift/curse. All her mother needed to say on her deathbed was “Ella, as your mother, I command you to obey my final words above all others: I order you to make your own decisions, using your best moral judgement, and live your life, from now until the end of time, as if Lucinda had never given you her gift.”
I think that covers most of the bases.
If you like me and I like you, I’d be happy to use that 2nd wish to make our dreams come true…so what would that mean for you, for us?”
Then, discuss!
Great video as always 😊
I love some of your thoughts on the curse rules.
Thanks Sophia!
For any Downton Abbey fans out there, Nish the ogre is played by Carson the buttler 🤭 talk about range!

@@SophiaPhannn Omg the shade 😂 Counting myself blessed I haven't actually read any Percy Jackson(I know the books are awesome, I just missed the train) because I could enjoy the movie...unlike 98% of the rest of the world lmao
i cant look at anne the same after THE IDEA OF YOU
LOOOOL ooh don’t ever watch “Love & Other Drugs” with Jake Gyllenhaal then 😂
