Merry Christmas Austin IMHO, your Princeton Amp would be better suited for single coil pickup playing any music style other than Rock. Just the kind of amp it is, a great amp for sure. I've been playing guitar since the mis 1970s and have found no one amplifier can do it all. My current amplifier rig consist of a dual amplifier setup using a Marshall Plexi and an old Fender Twin Reverb, between both of those amps I can cover most music styles. Maybe consider a Kemper style amp which would allow you to utilize many more tonal profiles. Great content Sir, thank you.
Back in the day guitar company info came with the "specifications subject to change without notice" disclaimer. And my memory of flying V and explorers in the 70s includes pu covers.
I think at this point Gibson needs to do a shakeup in the QA department. Every company makes mistakes but it seems that there are consistent issues with Gibson's QA process that have survived the change in ownership.
I just built myself a 6G3 Deluxe! Suhr recently released the Hombre “Brown Deluxe” at a fantastic price for a handwired USA made amp($1600!). If you don’t like the Princeton, I highly recommend the Suhr Hombre. The 6G3 circuit is more akin to the Marshall 1974 model than any Fender amp. It has nice cleans at lower volume, but it breathes 🐉 🔥 when cranked.
Matt Fields Totally agree with you, congrats on a really nice amp. I've an older Marshall Plexi and the biggest surprise is how musical and rich the clean tones are out of it. Crank it past 3 or 4 on the volume and it sounds like an early ZZ Top or Bad Company.
Yeah I'm into Ibanez and Dean basses at least Dean still makes and sells Flying V basses and explorer basses at guitar center because that's the only guitar store near me in Massachusetts while Epiphone/Gibson punked out and only make SG basses and thunderbird basses
I actually think it might be time to get heavily into amps and the tone. It doesn't matter how good your guitar is; understanding amps and tone is a huge part of sound.
I can’t believe the amount of errors mistakes bad quality control at these prices are acceptable it’s not. Come on Gibson send them back !!! And Trogly your a dealer. Bad workmanship for USA product. I hope you get better products in the future such a shame. P.s Put a tube screamer in front amazing little amps
Merry Christmas everybody, from Australia. I only found this channel this year but have really enjoyed my 'daily dose of guitar information'. Take care! :)
For historical reference I thought you may be interested to know that I also removed the pick-up covers and the neck pick-up was all Black and that's how I played it, uncovered. The bridge pick-up was a Zebra that I replaced w/ a DiMarzio Super Distortion pick-up, which at the time was one of the only after market High Power pick-ups. That was my main axe until like a fool I sold it in 1990. I still weep ...
Trogly: this 20K Gibson Flying V has some tool Marks on the fret, and a chip and crack but thas ok. Also Trogly: This wire fret of Ibanez is giving me anxious.
I’m curious if anyone knows current turnaround times for Gibson orders. I ordered a Les Paul about 2 months ago and still haven’t received tracking information. I had to order it because I’m left handed and finding a stocked lefty is near impossible.
Most luthiers let guitar finishes dry for at least 90 days before building. It can definitely take a good 5 to six months to complete a well built guitar. I finished a les paul myself and its hanging on the wall untouched for at least 2 months before I play it. Lacquer, oils, and spray colors, need time to set. They can seem like they are dry but still have a lot of elasticity to it which is the last thing you want in a finish.
@@doknox Thanks, they quoted me 8-12 weeks but I understand that things are different now with COVID-19 so I was looking to see what others are experiencing. It does look like some people are experiencing a 5 month turnaround time. Thanks for replying.
How the f*ck does a guitar with the wrong pickups or crooked tuners get past QC? Every time I start thinking that I want a Les Paul Trogly puts out a video with Gibson’s horrific quality control. I’ll buy another Strat
Get a diy les paul. Got mine from solo guitars and its damn good for the price. Took about a week to complete with a black cherry flame burst. The only thing that really needs an upgrade is the 3 way switch and maybe some locking tuners. They weren't holding tune well but I added some extra tension and they seem to be holding up now. Definitely worth it.
I have a 2004 Classic Goldtop, and honestly that is the best feeling/sounding Les Paul I've ever played, even more so than the 50s/60s spec (or even new classics and Trads), hell i even had a guy try buying it off of me when i was letting him demo an amp i was selling with it lol
Well that explains alot about your tone inconsistencies lol the reissue amps like the deluxe reverb and princeton have different tones than amps most people use. A great testing amp to use is something thats more used by a wider audience like the hot rod deluxe tube amp. Most people have one or test with one so its easier getting consistent tones. Plus the deluxe reverb only has 2 tone knobs, the Princeton just one. Both of them limit your adjustments. You need a good amp with all 3, low mid and high tone adjustments. Unless you're looking for the specific tones you get just from a deluxe or Princeton.
I never have understood that weird tremolo effect on some amps. My very first ridiculously cheap amp that my parents bought me in the early 1970’s had that feature built in. I never used it for anything. I haven’t seen it on other amps - but I’ve not had many amps in my time. I had a Carlsboro then went straight to a Marshall 100 watt head and 4 x 12 cab. Couldn’t move that around as I was a teen without a car at the time. Sold it and bought a little Music Man amp - which I hated with a passion - got rid of that very quickly. Bought a 100w Marshall Combo in about 1979 and that is the one I still have today. When you said you had bought another Fender amp I thought “why not a Marshall” - then you said about doing a deal, with Marshall. Anyway, great episode, Happy Holidays and see you tomorrow. Cheers from the UK 🍺🎄

I own one of those Vs but with the correct pickups. It's not too bad. The serial number is very faint, I can barely read it and from a foot away it looks like there's no number stamp at all. The important thing for me was that the tuning was stable, and the neck seems pretty comfortable. The Plek job is NICE. It's actually a joy when you tune your guitar, and play a chord and it sounds like you bothered to tune your guitar.
I have that Smokehouse Burst LP Classic (exclusive Sweetwater color) and it is such a nice guitar. I like the tonal options with the push/pulls that is gives. Great all around guitar.
I got a Kiesel this Christmas and it arrived absolutely perfect out of the box. Not a single blemish, all frets were dressed and no setup work needed. Not sure why people still buy Gibson with all the QC issues.
Hey Austin, am I the only one to notice the fret board is bound? - I've had a lot of Gibby V's, none of them were bound. Was that supposed to be a bound board?
OK...I am not a musician and have ZERO musical talent, but I appreciate music of many forms. I have an appreciation for quality instruments of all kinds and I, just on a whim, watched one of your vids and was pleasantly surprised by the way you did your video and have watched a few, here and there, since. Thank you for an enjoyable few minutes enjoying guitars.....:)
I like using rotosound swing strings on my bass .35 to .90 gauge just like Cliff I'm soon trying to buy a Dean metalman ML and paint a red stripe down the middle
Within 2 minutes Trogly has said brown tolex 'has more bite' and then called eminence speakers 'eminessence'. Sorry Trogly but stick to the guitar reviews! Merry Xmas
Seeing the V and the Explorer makes me think Gibson never gets "new things" , instead of doing a Explorer for example with P90s, maple neck/fretboard, 4 pots and a straight string headstock, they bring electronic tuners... PS: CS DC LP humbucker model, please!
Don't know the year model but my oldest brother has a Princeton Two with built in chrome arms for tilting the amp back a few degrees. I used it way back when I was young and loved it. I in later years had an original 65 deluxe reverb amp that I purchased from someone for $40. The Princeton was the better amp but mine wasn't half bad. I test drove a reissue of the same amp and found that it was to thin in tone plus the effects were on both channels and the block that was formerly spring didn't have the same quality sound. Maybe it was some of the newer electronics that replaced tubes but just wasn't the same.
Haven't been playing since my preamp broke & got 8 stitches in my right hand. Picked up my fav lp today, my 82 standard. Rusty but it felt great. Cool V Trogly.
Those Chris Stapleton Princeton is a mighty fine amp..that 70's Flying V with the Burstbuckers looks similiar to a 120th Anniversary V with the covered pickups, still a cool flying V.... Merry Christmas!
That "Freak V" looks totally awesome. Your Princeton amp I wouldn't of given a second look. I had the Fender "Bronco" version in '72. It had all of your controls but had separate Bass and Tone pots. It's a good practice or beginner amp, not good for gigging unless you mic it with something big.
16:56, Love the Adam Jones Les Paul. Really hope I can easily find one of these and afford it. Plus, that guitar needs more love and it needs to stop getting sold out so easily all the time.
That Princeton will be great but the Fender pcb board amps like your reissue Deluxe Reverb are super awesome too. Anyone who says differently doesn’t know how tone works. I have several of each of all sizes. Looking forward to hearing the Chris Stapleton model more! Congratulations!
You could always do your 12 days of Christmas video in segments where you do two or three guitars in each segment edit and once your up to 12 splice your segments together. Afterwards releasing the video not being spent from doing the whole video in one shot but over a few days to the point of it being complete. JS.
i like the silver covers on that 1st V. :) to me it lets it be more monochromatic, and the rings just add a little accent. i think this one's a stunner. i like it just as it is.
I noticed you had the tone control down almost all the way on the amp, that's cutting a lot of signal and gain. I like to run my Brown Fenders between 4 and 6 on the volume dial, and Tone turned to 8ish on the 6G2 (Princeton) and 6G3 (Deluxe) circuits.
Glad to hear you’ve hooked up with Marshall - it’s always been a criticism of mine of the channel, since the early days... A channel about Gibsons should really feature a Marshall-style amp in the demos.
The Flying V actually looks pretty cool with the covers on, also that one and the white Explorer definitely give me major James Hetfield vibes and it makes me happy, Merry Christmas and happy holidays Trogly and everyone else

Definitely more classic looking with the covers.

It’s just ridiculous, every other Gibson unboxing of troglys, something is wrong. Even with high end pieces like the Adam jones guitar. Unacceptable
The 2020 Epiphone lineup seems more appealing to me than anything Gibson tried to launch this year. the whole company could probably use a shakeup.
