Cube: Moyu Meilong 3M (about $6)
UV gel: Foxy Expert super gloss no wipe top gel for nails, UV/LED cured (about $4)
Lamp: Sun X UV/LED lamp, 54W (about $7)
Curing time: 5min (could be less)
Warning: don’t try this under sunlight, even if it’s cloudy and the light comes through the window. This was the cause of the lumps on the blue side. Even very little UV light is enough to mess up the coating.
how much does it cost to make it
@@GeneralTomanhus I bought UV gel for about $4 and a nail lamp for about $7 (there are cheaper lamps though). And a ton of patience.

Great video! I loved your dedication to getting this done yourself. Also if you are really dedicated to getting rid of dust you can do this in a small room, like a closet or small bathroom and spray some water mist in the air before you start. That will cut the dust in the air way way down.
It looks amazing, it looks even better than factory uv coated cubes
Nice, you did it!
Cool video, I didn't know you can give your cube diy magic clothes. The result looks pretty good for a first try.
Nice video but I feel that this would be like magnetising your own cube from a few years back where barely any company does it but now it is in budget cubes and a few years down the line, uv coating would be on budget cubes too but for now, I think that this would be a good alternative for cubes that don’t come with uv coating
You are right. And I don't recommend it unless you really want to do it yourself - it's too tedious.
Aunque los cubos nuevos como los moyu tampoco tienen recubrimiento uv
Exactly, for example, this is now a project for my RSM2020 :) I probably wouldn't try it on a frosted GAN though lol, I know Speedcubeshop does it perfectly but at a co$t 😅
It happened. Rs3m v5 uv
Oooooh dang. Alright I definitely need to make a whole video on my approach, I'm off tomorrow and plan to UV a new gan megaminx if it works out. I'm pretty confident I can do it quite a bit better as a finished product, though definitely more effort and cost. We shall see, thanks for helping spark this interest back :D
Great job though!
Please do, this is interesting!
I'm wondering if doing this in front of an air purifier (including a Corsi-Rosenthal Box) would reduce help the amount of dust landing in the gel while you work on it - perhaps running it in the room for a while to clean the air before you work might also help. So basically a more budget version of a laminer flow hood which is used when working on hard drive data recovery, etc.
In plain home environment, I'd say a simple cleaning including dusting and mopping could help. People on reddit also suggested to do it in the bathroom after running hot water for steam. And there are also some DIY dustfree containers for clean works. In my opinion, if you want to coat one or two cubes, you can just take more time on removing the particles and waiting. It's hardly worth the effort to make a dustfree container or such. For more cubes though, this can be also considered.
Great vid buddy🤜🏽🤛🏽
This looks like a $500 cube! Keep up the good content!
more like 50
Thank you so much. I was looking for this kind of how to, and all the others were just not that nice. But, you nailed it. Heh, heh, fingernailed it.
I want to do this to my YS3M but I don’t really trust my skill..surprised how cheap it is though, and it looks great on the Meilong!
Well, if you buy a lamp and gel for just one cube, it's about $11, but with the same price difference, you can get the YS3M "Magic clothes" which will be much higher quality. DIY UV coating requires insane patience. I'm trying a second cube to fix some of the mistakes I made in this one, and it's been about two hours since I first applied the coating on just one side. I'm trying to make it perfect, so I remove every bubble or particle, and it requires more time for the coating to flatten. And that's just one side!
I also just discovered (thanks people on r/cubers) that it was sunlight that messed up my blue and green sides. It couldn't have been much (it was cloudy and the sunlight came through a window), but it was enough to cure the coating just a bit to make it more like jelly. So I decided to try again with artificial light.
@@OlgaFyodorova o heard the magic clothes version feels different to the normal YS3M, plus I probably wouldn’t buy the Ys3M again just for the coating. I hope your second cube goes well, what cube are you coating for the second cube?
@@gkcuber a Meilong 3C. I have a lot of them, bought them for my workshop I held in the neighborhood. I'm coating it just for practice.
The YS3M is pretty expensive to risk it. I could try it if I was sure I could do it perfectly - and also that I like the kind of coat you get with the nail gel.
Maybe it's best to apply the gel under lighting that's known to not have any UV.
That's what I did after I realized the sunlight through my window cured some gel. I used regular artificial lighting afterwards.
@@OlgaFyodorova Very good. If that had not worked, it would have been possible to get filters for your lights. Also, I use yellow, orange, and red LED bulbs. But, doing solves under that is really hard because the yellow and white pieces are virtually indistinguishable.
Hi! Do you have a link to the exact products that you used because i can't seem to find it.
Are you in Russia?
Careful splitting the pieces. Some cubes don't deal with that well.
Yeah, capped design cubes especially. Meilong, RS3M, YS3M split no problem - split design cubes.
Cool video...I did this to my Tornado v3 a while ago coincidence almost same method....and this method / effect l end result looks even better than my YS3M magic clothes original UV. I think you did your painting more smoother than me...I had UV lamp but I rushed to put under the uv lamp one side...I think other sides worked out better when I just let the layer pf paint gloss settle a few minutes to get smooth and flat before the out under UV lamp...but its amazing how it works out in end isnt it?,.,.my tornado V3 is super glossy like candy now lol. I might try it on my ys3m non- UV to see the difference and how it compares with my UV Magic clothes ys3m version now ,..
Was it you who recently showed their Tornado in the r/Cubers DDT?
I'm really picky about the surface being even enough and without dust. So I did it on two Meilongs (the second one turned out better) and coated half of an RS3M but then got bored and didn't finish it.
Hi Olga. It's a very interesting video; thanks for sharing your whole process 🙂 I feel like trying on a budget cube; I would not dare doing it on my GAN or Tornado cubes. I wonder how this coating ages? Because it doesn't last forever when it's on nails. Your video is 3-month old now, do you have any feedback on this point maybe?...
Here's the catch: I didn't dare doing it on a flagship cube, and I can't stand cubing with a Meilong for a long time. So I used it for a few days and left it sitting in my cube drawer. It's fine (of course it is), but I can't say how good it is long-term. I started coating an RS3M 2021 but got bored with waiting and removing dust particles, so I never finished it. Personally, after a lot of work, I don't think it's worth it - the results are okay at best, but the amount of work is really high. So I'd just prefer using my cubes as they are, factory coated or not. More and more cubes are released with factory UV coating. I'm actually waiting for a UV coated Tornado v3 :)
From my experience with factory UV coating, it's not impervious. My Gan 11 is covered with micro scratches - smaller than on a regular plastic, but then again, on a regular plastic tiny scratches kinda get polished over and over, but it doesn't happen on the UV coating. It's still shiny though. My YS3M and WRM v9 have a couple of more significant scratches, I believe from a box.
Results look awesome, I will try this with my YS3M standard. Thanks for providing a tutorial in English! :)
Warning: don’t do it under sunlight, even if it’s through your window, even if it’s cloudy. This was the cause of those ugly lumps on the blue side.
Do you reckon it would have decent results with a Sq1?

This is awesome! Thanks for making the video! I was considering trying it with some resin from my 3d printer (also cures with UV). Do you think it would be easier / viable to pour the liquid into a shallow tray and dip the whole cube face?
No idea really, but if you try that, let me know how it goes!
i think the uv gell is much more thicker then the average resin printer uv resin
I work with resin or epoxy a lot and nail polish up gel is a lot thicker. If you dip the cube you would risk the resin running into the cube. You could use a small brush and paint on thin layers and cure each layer depending on how thick you want the layers. You would have to do them thin to prevent run off and definitely section like in the video.
@@angellynette8258 That's a good point. I was kind of trying to make sense of how the manufacturers do it for large batches. Brushing it on does make sense, but what if there's 1000 of them?
@@JaredLucas have you watched the videos where they tour the MoYo or Gan factories? They videos are old but a interesting watch. Anyway hey probably spray the pieces with the uv coating while they are still in plastic sheets or dip the sheets in the liquid maybe. Kinda like any other coating then go threw another machine to set the coating. Just my thoughts, I watch a lot of how things are made shows, ☺️
Wow!! nice work
Thanks! The second one turned out better!
that looks great. the little imperfections make it unique. well done.
finally going to do this on my ylm pyraminx. better grip is better in comps.
BTW did you paint a thin layer or thick layer of polish? I had to paint thick layer because it looked more smooth after? But you got a good smooth surface after painting...did you paint just thin or thick later for your cube?
Pretty thick. And I let the coating sit for hours to get smooth and even. However, this also puts it at risk of getting dust particles. I closed the box where I kept the cube with a lid, but it didn't eliminate dust completely.
Hi I just wanted to know that if I can achieve similar result with a 6w uv lamp and if yes how many minutes do I need to cure with it
Yes! I don't know how many minutes though. I'd try coating a piece of plastic - anything, a broken cube or whatever - and curing it. I did 5-7 minutes, but I think it's an overkill. I just did it to be 100% sure.
@@OlgaFyodorova thanks dear
How much UV gel did you use? I'd really like to know since I would like to try it for myself, do you guys use much UV gel when UV coating a cube? Like half the bottle or something, just wondering.
My gel bottle is 15ml. I coated two 3x3s and two sides of a third 3x3 so far. Still have some left, I think it is enough to finish the third cube at least.
@@OlgaFyodorova So around 15ml for coating 3 cubes?
@@ceqell Maybe even more cubes, I don't know if I run out of lube after I coat the third one.
@@OlgaFyodorova Mind telling me when you run out? I'd like to know how many cubes you can coat with 15ml really.
@@ceqell I started coating my third cube but then got lazy and didn't finish it. I'd say 3 cubes easily, maybe 4.
Hey Olga, Can I use a hairdryer?
No, it won’t work.
How long will the UV coat if you want to call it that last before it wears off.
It doesn't look like it will wear off. I have two Gan puzzles with UV coating, and they get tiny scratches but don't peel or wear off. This nail coating seems similar. I have a scuff on one of my Meilongs - don't know how it appeared - and I can peel the coating with my fingernail there. I don't know if there was a defect there or something.
How do long do u put it in the uv coating creator thingy?
Nail masters usually use 1-2mins, but I did 5-7mins just to be sure the coating is fully cured. Compared to hours of waiting, checking and removing particles, it's nothing, so I didn't mind it. I just wish there was a way to turn this lamp on without timer, so that I wouldn't have to press the button every minute.
Be sure to check the next video where I did better :)
Say no to a $100 cube when you can just do UV coating on a Meilong at home!
Haha. I have to admit that Meilong isn’t my favorite cube, even a magnetic one. RS3M is ok. And I said no to Gan 13 because the price is atrocious, and I already have a Gan 11 and 12 collecting dust.
"Hope you can read chinese"
I I cannot find the same type of gloss that you have can you send me a link? And how long do you have to wait before Curing
It's a Russian brand which I bought in a Russian online store. I don't think you'll find the exact same gel. Look for UV cured nail gel and make sure it's a top coat, high glossy (sometimes called "diamond"), transparent, cured in UV/LED lamp.
Thank you how long do you need to wait before curing
@@Cubhands Depends on the lamp, I did 5-7min just to be sure.
I really want to try this but I'm afraid it will be not comp legal, especially when delegates in my area are extremely strict in terms of cube checking

Yes, it has to be a UV light. Any nail UV lamp will do.

Yes, absolutely. You need UV light to make a UV coating.
Will this work just on a gan center cap?
Yeah, but it probably won't be comp legal.
will a 6w nail polish dryer work or will it not harden?

hey, thanks for the tutorial and tips Olga! I actually successfully UV coated my first cube (it was an old meilong 3c) and I have to say that it's super grippy and glossy like a gan cube! (even thought the turning and performance is still horrible since it's a meilong 🥲)

Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you were able to do it successfully. Good luck with the Super RS3M. Do you have to coat it though? Mine polished to almost glossy really quickly, and it's grippy. Not as shiny, but it's not like I want the shine in every cube - if you solve in direct sunlight, the glare hinders recognition.
@@OlgaFyodorova well, in your opinion; does the pros outweigh the cons?
@@ceqell even if you consider just the coating, without the effort invested, I'm not sure. For a matte cube, yes. For a glossy or almost glossy cube, eh, dunno. And considering the effort required, I'd rather say no. You can ruin your cube or end up not satisfied with the result. So, even though I like how my second Meilong ended up, I'm not doing it for my more expensive cubes. Too tedious, high risk of perfectionism driving me nuts. Oh, and also, the UV coating is a fingerprint magnet, so the cube will look better (subjectively) when clean and worse with fingerprints all over.
Можно ли обычным феном высушить детали?)
Нет, там происходит химическая реакция под воздействием УФ-излучения. На солнце тоже не получится - слишком медленно, пыли налетит и налипнет много, пока затвердеет хорошо.
what if using a spray coating? :D
Do you know of a spray with similar properties?
@@OlgaFyodorova idk
@@OlgaFyodorova I just wish it was scratch resistant too
How long shoul I put the cube on Light???
A few minutes, to be sure. You can apply some gel on a bottle cap, for example, and try curing it for a minute or two. Then check if it's fully hardened and whether your fingers leave fingerprints that you can't wipe off - if they do, cure for longer.
Now he can low his budget by buying matte cube and uv coated by himself damn
I don't recommend it tho. First, it's super tedious, and perfect result is not guaranteed in a non-dustfree environment. Second, you'll still have to buy the nail gel and the lamp. But it's a fun project, and you can also coat a cube that never comes with UV coating from the factory.
