Butter and cheese sandwiches sound like a true Midwesterner snack! Haha. When you finish your circumnavigation, I'll send a gift basket from WI with some for you guys! 😉
What a miserable anchorage. I'm glad no collision occurred but pretty scary. You are headed to some pretty intense sailing down South! And you are heading the "wrong" way around Cape Horn against the wind, only the toughest sailors attempt it WOW!
Having watched you and other sailors visit Brazil, I'm really really looking forward to spending time there when we cruise. Thanks for showing us your experience there. It seems that there are a lot of kind proud happy people in Brazil.
One of my favorite UA-cam Sailing Channels! Actually sailing again...love your adventures. Perfect background music for this one, fantastic natural sound, narration and SOT. Enjoy
Hi Scott! Thanks so much for the wonderful comment! Curtis just watched your Long Beach to Dana Point race video, great start!!!! You guys sail well and it seems like there are lots of obstacles on the course! We had to look up what SOT meant, thanks for helping us learn some new vocab for videography!!!!
@@SailingSweetRuca Thanks for watching my UA-cam channel. Did you like and subscribe as I did and will continue to do for you? Racing in Long Beach and SoCal is so much fun and the breezes are usually pretty good. "Sound on Tape" is an integral part of editing and you guys do a great job! Thank you again!
I ran across you guys channel a couple days ago and started binge watching. I feel like I have gotten a feeling of attachment to y’all. I really got knots in my stomach when Kate was thinking of quitting. Being a very devoted husband I could not imagine being separated from my wife. May you continúe to be blessed with calm seas and wind in your sails.
Thanks for the kind words Mark! We are so happy you've enjoyed coming along on our journey with us! We are glad you will be back! It was a difficult time during the pandemic but we are glad we stucj together and made it this far! We really do make a great team 🙂 like I'm sure you and your wife do 😊
You guys are awesome! Thanks for all the explanations you give while under way. I love learning more from your experience as sailors. I hope I will be as calm as you are. So glad you did not have any problems with the fishing vessel.
I had that tightness in my chest that comes from being in similar spots throughout the whole time you were at anchorage... Can almost feel the opposing wind and waves. Definitely had sweaty palms when the fishing boat started dragging, but you guys did a great job managing that. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!
Sounds like you know the exact feeling!!!! Thanks for the comment as it is always good to hear we are not the only ones :-) Such is the life of sailors! Cheers Rich!
You guys are doing really well, meeting the challenges head on, and your adventure has only started, wishing you all the best. We are sailing around the area of the Berry Islands this winter, crossing the Atlantic in the spring, getting the angle on the sail to Brazil.
Heya Rauf! That is awesome! Sometimes we really miss those crystal clear, warm, Bahamamian waters! Enjoy!!!!!! Smart routing! It would be so awesome to catch up with you for a coffee or sundowner in the Pacific :-)
Coffee with Sweet Ruca is always great. Seemed tough to say goodby to the amazing friends you all made in Brazil but good people like that are friends for life. Glad everything was ok in the anchorage. Can you sail straight into the wind, or do you have to motor? Yall keep having fun and stay safe. Bill
Thanks Bill! Coffee was excellent this morning :-) We can sail about an angle of 40 degrees into the wind, a few degrees more if there are large waves, past that we need to motor, or tack back and forth in a zig zag pattern to make progress against the wind.
Curtis I've never heard of a storm snubber. Ok it's longer but how does it work. By the way you guys are a worry at the moment. Like you've just finished damage repairs & your going around the Cape. Faaaark!!!! Stay safe. I really relate to you guys.
Hi Earl. The snubber is just longer. More length = more stretch vs our day anchoring snubber. Stretch is good in big waves and gusty winds in an open anchorage. The downside of a longer snubber is more sailing at anchor and more salty & slimy wet rope aboard. No worries ;-) Does one ever stop fixing a sailboat?
That was scary with the close encounter with the fishing boat. I'm glad it turned out well in the end. I'm not surprised that making sounds and having the strength of the wind in the nose does not work. Sound is just air pressure waves. Cheers.
Cheers! You are right on about the horn! Maybe we need a bigger one? We wish we had the whole fishing boat encounter on video, but we missed recording some in "emergency" mode. It was 100% going to hit us, so we had to quickly get the engine on and we turned hard to port at full throttle with our anchor down. We missed by inches as we could almost touch the huge wooden fishing boat. We were really worried their propeller or rudder would snag our chain and tie us together.
I’m sure the battleship the “Graf spee” was scuttled in Montevideo harbour. When I went there decades ago, you could see a few sunken ships sticking out of the water.
Ahhh! We read a bit about this in the history of Uruguay. Apparently it almost drew them into WWII as it was allowed into the harbor and the USA wasn't too happy about it, or something like that? Cool that you know of it!
Sweet Katie, know you have no control over it, but Their Tube put very long commercial's in front of the exciting parts. So now am rewatching with the mute on as my 93 year old Mom talks.
@@SailingSweetRuca No the long ads do not add anything, your content is plenty. Think some advertiser's know very few people are going to watch a 5 minute long ad, so they get their name out there, with no cost when people click away. I do watch all of the ads with the mute on for the channels like yours I like. At 93 Mom lives alone, still drives & could pass for late 60's, I tell her she looks younger than her kids & does except for my sister with those same genes.
Mom sounds like she is doing great! More fun than watching the ads at least! Thanks for coming along Bob. If youre really desperate, we try to make videos ad free on Patreon when we can, and our membership is the most affordable out there. Just a suggestion! Cheers 😀
Dear Sweet Ruca, Watch out for fishing nets in Brazilian coast, there isn’t a lot of sailing vessels in the area and fishermen might not be very careful with their signage. Safe Sailing!!
Thank you Tio! You are correct! Luckily we have not snagged one yet, but have had a few close calls with nets that are difficult to see. All of the fishermen we have sailed by in Brazil been very nice and professional. Saude!!!
Katie! Look at the fingers on your right hand. If you continue to release the anchor like that your going to loose them in the chain. Stand up girl hold fast with both hands and push anchor with your foot. That was a close call for you weather you know it or not. Stay safe and try to enjoy your cruising.
You are right on James! Good eye and thank-you for looking out! Normally we don't free fall the anchor, but we had the clutch open as we used it for the bow mooring line in Itajai and forgot to tighten it! A good learning experience, and evidence of just how quickly things could go from OK to terrible with a just small mistake.
You might consider installing a hailer. Horn and loudspeaker all in one. Its so cool to yell ;"thanks for the wake job, I'll smoke a stogie now and call you tomorrow!" Also the rope you were using to take the load off your chain during the storm looks a little overstressed. You might consider two if you have two forward cleats and have the time when you anchor, or maybe making a bridle with a Mantus chain hook or something. Cheese and Butter sandwiches look surprisingly good, especially without blood and finger parts.
Hahaha! OMG you would love our friends from Michigan! They have a megaphone on board for the no wake zone violators on the river! Good weekend entertainment!!!!!!
Just noticed the ratchet straps on the dinghy. Did they change color? Is is a mandatory part of the leaving port checklist that Curt pull on them and say "that ain't going anywhere"?
That looked like a not fun anchoring experience on many levels. Did you get any sleep in that swell? Would hanging a hammock inside help one sleep in that rollly a situation?
Balneário Camboriú has several of the tallest buildings in Brazil, I think they are even building a 500m "super tall" skyscraper. It's a touristic city... but internal tourism. Very few foreigners heard about it
As World Cruisers you know that anchoring in any protective harbour where fishing vessels also run to ,, that you are the tourist in their bay. Most likely your intuition was right that you were sitting on that ledge where THEY usually anchor and have anchored for the last 25 years in storms. While Portuguese fishermen are very kind and polite and would never carelessly want to hit your vessel,, it is up to you to protect yourself at all times. From my experiences in other countries of Central & S. America , that is not always the case. Often when a cruiser infiltrates the harbours of long time residents,, they could care a less if they hit you. The wondrous joys of world cruising is always full of challenges and stresses. Hey I never did hear if you knew exactly what you hit on your Atlantic East-West crossing. From the markings it did look like a partially submerged shipping container. My curiosity would have had me Heave-To and inspect and then retrace route and try and find it.... Often those containers might hold a valuable bounty. The treasure hunter in me would think , Hmmm, 5000 bluetooth speakers, or 1000 drones , or 2000 laptops or even 1000 cases of baked beans. 😂 But, sometimes curiosity can kill the cat too. Well alls well that ends well Fair Winds & Sail On Guys ! SV Jaz

Haha nice catch! It is actually a cheese wheel we brought with us from Tenerife! Still hard to find good cheese down here...
I beg to disagree. I think it's easier to find real cheese in Brazil than in the US, where mostly I could only find processed "cheese"
