  • If you are breeding pigs on pasture, there are different breeds, genetic lines, and many other attributes that you can choose. But what qualities do we look for in our breeder pigs? Can we avoid squashed pigs, weak pigs, and many other problems by selecting good breeders?

Give yourself some credit you are definitely one of the brighter crayons in the box. Especially since you have the ability to clearly and coherently communicate your thoughts and perspective.
Really appreciate how informative your videos are!

I work at a clinic in a city but I love seeing other lifestyles. Sometimes I’m envious of farmers and sometimes I’m glad I get to sit at a desk all day instead. I’m grateful someone’s out there working on creating food for everyone. Thanks for providing info and your perspective

My brother and I tried our hands at breeding hogs (some weird Mangalitsa-Berkshire-Tamworth cross) this winter. I've "midwifed"/assisted beef cattle in the past, so I had no problem assisting some of the sows when the time came. I personally enjoy it, but I understand it's not necessary if you have a good enough set-up. We didn't, and Nova Scotia is a much colder climate than Mississippi, necessitating makeshift shelters and heat-lamps.
One of our gilts farrowed, and I'm happy to have been there to ensure that 14 out of the 15 born survived (last piglet came out still-born). This gilt has become a great mother, albeit a bit protective. But as soon as I realized that I've kept a respectful distance.
Teat fidelity is interesting. One of our sows apparently had mastitis before we got her and likely only has 10 working teats. She's still successfully raising 11 piglets ( a month old now), but I have noticed times when one of the piglets scream bloody murder because he's being robbed of "his" teat.
As for unassisted farrows: one sow I couldn't even tell was pregnant randomly gave birth the other week. 6/10 survived and she's been a very attentive mother. While our other gilt gave birth late one night; six initially survived- but then she squashed them all. Needless to say: the poor girl will be culled.
Love your videos, man, they give me great ideas for how to improve our hog operation going forward; eager to start growing grain and cover crops this year.

Sunday I should have a video out on developing breeding stock! I'll be interested to hear your response.
Nova Scotia is a very different climate indeed! I had some manga that I think were tamworth crosses, but I'm not sure. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the information and knowledge you share. The focus on overall performance in relation to feed and care effort is also very useful. I am more concerned with poultry, here the problems are the same with breeding for exhibitions without taking performance into account. Fortunately, an awareness is slowly growing that the breed can only be preserved if performance is also taken into account. Social networks play a role in this, so thank you again for your work.
A topic that I find very interesting would be a description of which physical characteristics correlate with which performance characteristics, which makes the selection of new breeding animals easier. This is a very large topic and not easy to explain in an understandable and simple way.
Kind regards from Germany and thank you again for all the knowledge you share.

    Interesting. Thanks :)
I do question myself if charcoal or rather fermented food from Effective Microbes (EM1) or a combination of both is a good substitude to cut cost whilst improve nutrition & health. 🤔 Not only with pigs but with pretty much all live stock. Greetings 🖐🏼

I believe I've commented on another video that we raise registered and non registered Large Blacks and breed for the same characteristics as you because we raise pastured pork. I can tell you we've raised all kinds over the years and I maybe a little bias but the Large Blacks are some of the best pigs I've ever raised on pasture. Since we are a little farther north we do farrow in the barn in February but out in the woods in the fall. But they would have no problems in February but it's more of a convenience for me than anything.

I’ve never tried large blacks though I’d like to try them. Not many available in my area.
