In NY,(and I assume all over) chicory is often seen right next to roads because it can do well in extremely compacted soils.(and the blue flowers are easily seen from the car.)
I only rarely see it along the road here. I think it’s mostly in northern and mid western states maybe?
Maybe, I can say it's not in Arizona, but that is hardly surprising. I think we need reports from other states whether it's there.
I dont know why but your voice is relaxing.
Thanks!
I have rarely met such a great speaker as yourself! Over 12 minutes with just yourself in the video but I am transfixed on the content of your speaking fully.
I love what you are doing and sharing.... Can you please share why you are so generous with your time and information? I am genuinely interested in your passion and wish to know your reason for being so giving without any obvious benefit to yourself.
The book you for the kind words. There isn’t any information on grazing pigs on cover crops to drastically reduce grain consumption and there aren’t people doing what I’m doing at any scale, not that my 50-60 finished pigs a year is at scale. In large part, one trying to share what I’m learning so that others can save some time and energy. Most people won’t look up the amino acid profiles that pigs need in their feed. Most swine researchers don’t know much about grazing pigs. So here I am.
It’s funny, I was tell someone yesterday that I spend more time recording and editing videos for UA-cam than I do farming many days. Some would say that I do it for the UA-cam money, but I’m a farmer before a UA-camr. And the $300 a month in ad revenue from UA-cam doesn’t pay me at the rate $7 and hour for my time! But I enjoy doing it. It’s one of my callings in life I think.
@@DowdleFamilyFarms thank kindly for such a thorough reply. And the financial breakdown too. I will keep looking for your posts, plus keep listening to your journey and experience... You are so generous and kind... At the risk of being cliché or over the top, I will keep exploring what you have to say as I believe it (your experience and message) needs spreading and sharing!
Very informative!
Glad it was helpful!
Very balanced and informative presentation.
Glad you think so!
So what percentage of your dream pasture seed mix would chicory comprise? 1-2%. ,,, 3-5%--- or more?
Not to be difficult but it’s not an easy question to answer. Are we talking about seed weight, percent cover in our pasture,’or percentage of dry matter production? In our fescue pasture it could be 5% of the cover. In our cover crop mixes it’s may make up 10% of the seed in the mix by weight but because it is small seeded the number of seeds is much higher, but it would produce much less then 1% of the forage because other crops so productive.
If I were to interseed it in our perennial fescue pastures, I’d want chicory and Boston plantain, a similar crop, to be a
Total of 5-10 percent of the forage on the ground if I’m grazing cows on it.
Very interesting. Also calcium and phosphorus are essential for bone growth in your pigs. You definitely want to make sure they have good bone structure because otherwise you’ll end up with downed pigs and will have to euthanize them.
Interesting that you say that. I know a couple that breed hogs in their back yard etc. they have had issues with sows going down. I have watched for it for some time. An independent grower warned me about that with our sows but I could never get a sow ration with the extra calcium and phosphorus the sows need. I’m hoping that they get higher levels from the forages we grow.
They breed forage chickory in other countries
We plant forage varieties as well.
Waiting on next cover crop (Rape seed)?
Is there a part of the season where the pigs especially seek out chickory but avoid it in other parts of the year?
Only when it is bolting do they avoid the forage. I suspect because it’s less nutritious.
@@DowdleFamilyFarms Fascinating feedback... One last question please... Have you found one or two weeds that you find your pigs benefit from and you don't aim to eliminate or control for... That is, you let the weed exist as if has benefits?
Chicory, dandelion, plantain, dock, and many others fall into this category I THINK.
Chicory is not a weed.
I’d agree but some state governments in the US would disagree.
