Tungsten pistons would not do as well, naming wise, cos "Lead Pistons" would make a great name for a 1990s style indie/alternative rock band, or maybe "Tin Pistons". However, tungsten pistons would probably be more durable, as tungsten has a melting point of 3400C and is used in the durable alloy, tungsten carbide. :) Disclaimer: Not a musician or scientist.
Friend of mines dad did car exhaust out of copper pipe and lead soldier like old home plumbing. It was hilarious when the exhaust heated up and the soldier melted again and all the piping fell out from under the car.
Plus, all the lead he breathed at stoplights. So funny lol (You never use lead solder for plumbing unless you like being blind. Edit: well, not your potable water, anyway and septic has been PVC and glue for a long time now)
@FuckGoogle502 "old home piping" was what i said as a description of the method used, not of current construction standards lmao. Also, i'm pretty sure he didn't breathe much in while driving as it heated up and fell off during the initial start and warmup test. I actually predicted that just cranking it would start wearing out the pin bores and cause contact. You can see they immediately bent an intake valve, hence the combustion pressure coming out the carb on every cycle. Either I was right or they had bent valves already.
Everyone: " Lead pistons? Nonsense." Garage 54: "Let's prepare and try real sample! It will be funny." 😂 ... I like this channel. Big automotive company would do PC simulation. Garage 54 prepares real example and that's interesting, even more entertaining and funny 😂
Lead vaporizes at much much higher temperatures than whatever temp a combustion chamber gets to. This isn't like leaded fuel where the lead is already volatile ish
You can always get a close enough timing without running the engine. Just line up the rotor with where it would be pointing to No. 1. Then line up the mark on the front pulley with the timing mark. Turn on the engine and slowly rotate the distributor until you see the points separate and create a tiny bit of spark. That will ensure the Lada will start and there won't be any guessing i.e. twisting the distributor trying to get it to start.
Let me know when you get this: Lead exposure can cause high blood pressure and brain, kidney and reproductive health issues in adults. Symptoms of lead poisoning include headaches, stomach cramps, constipation, muscle/joint pain, trouble sleeping, fatigue, irritability, and loss of sex drive. Great video! How about casting the lead with copper or brass inserts for holding the piston rings and conrod pin? Pretty sure, more positive results will be achieved, at least longer using time.
Was thinking as you are pretty well versed in making pistons, why not look into making proper aftermarket pistons? Sure there will be an alloy caster local able to supply alloy slugs, maybe a coatings company to imbue the teflon sides and all you have to do is the machining be a nice side hustle, note I use the word alloy because BMI Russian can't say aluminium if their lives depended on it...
What about steel pistons? Start with a large diameter steel tube and weld a cover over the end and put a smaller diameter tube through the side for the gudgeon pin. Add a brace to the inner ends of that tube. No need for any metal casting. These might actually have a chance of lasting for a reasonable time.
