Unbelievable. Only Ray Cooper. He's the only man in the world who could play one of the most iconic rock songs of all time, on a stage with Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck cranked up to 11, and steal their spotlight with a giant f&%#ing felt mallet. I can't believe virtually no one knows who he is. Today's pop stars would kill for that kind of swagger.
I just love that Elton did an almost-solo tour a year or two ago, and who did he take? One of the richest touring musicians in the world--he could've had anybody he wanted. He could've afforded a twelve-piece band. He could've had his own orchestra in every city. But no. Elton takes Ray Cooper and nobody else. It's like after forty years of touring, he finally realized, "Oh no, it was just Ray that made me sound good all that time. He's really all I need."
the guy creates so much energy what a showman and great in the groove player i agree he stoll the show and im a guitar player all i could do is watch ray
The tamborine ,percussionist, gong man ray cooper stole that show lol he hit that with all hes got ,i wonder how many lines he had hoovered up lol great performance 🎸🎵🎶
i remember going to several concerts and getting even more excited when i spotted the gong behind a massive drum kit that could only belong to ray cooper. elton, clapton, etc. a great night of music made even better by the talent that is ray cooper....
I was fortunate enough to see a Clapton concert in about 1994, and it was great! I have to say that Ray Cooper was indeed the most animated performer on stage. The exact opposite of Eric Clapton, who as I recall, played some amazing guitar, but made it look effortless. Really unbelievable:)
I've seen Clapton live 3x.. His unplugged version of Layla was a major hit in the US. I always yell at the stage...NO!!!!NO!!!NO!!! When he play the first few notes of Layla unplugged at my shows😔
@ColinPRS it was recorded in London 1983 at the ARMS Concert. a fund raiser put together by Ronnie Lane of the Small Faces for research into multiple sclerosis as he was a sufferer of the disorder. the concert is available on DVD
I saw the 79 EJ cooper tour and it was amazing from both. Cooper however stole the show from EJ with his energy and he had the just cant take you eyes off him flair.
it was recorded at the ARMS Concert in London 1983. it was put together as a fund raiser by the Small Faces Ronnie Lane who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis
Yeah . .Ray kicked ass . .and Jimmy Page, though really stoned was awesome getting that melody on the last part . .and who was that playing guitar? Pat Boone?
I have always wondered what the name of the percussionist might be. He plays that gong with absolute conviction. Whenever I see him perform, my eye is drawn to him. Can anyone tell me his name? Thanks.
I don't think that is what went on. At 0:45, he is telling everyone to slow down the tempo a bit. It appears that ven the best players rush when excited. It must be a blast to be in that environment.
Jeff Beck is da man !!! .. Clapton's a good singer with some skills but he's been swimming in Jeff Beck's wake of guitar virtuousity since the Yardbirds. No offense to Eric Clapton but Beck's an innovator and Eric's been rehashing the same riffs forever.
Contrarian here. I've always found him to be a distraction. Flamboyant hands and all the other nonsense takes away from the talent onstage, especially in this case. This wasn't about the percussionist. But... he's onstage with legends and I'm not. So, there's that.
I could watch Ray Cooper every day for the rest of my life. Love everything about him.
Yes!
Ray stole the show.
Unbelievable. Only Ray Cooper. +Luke's Ukes Ray cooper, is great !! and as you said virtually no one knows who he is...
+Luke's Ukes I know who he is. He's a master. His tambourine part on Elton John's "All The Young Girls Love Alice" is legendary.
Always love Ray Cooper! Stole the show when I saw clapton in 91- what a talent and character - I am sure many others love the guy too!
I just love that Elton did an almost-solo tour a year or two ago, and who did he take? One of the richest touring musicians in the world--he could've had anybody he wanted. He stole the show tonight with Sir Elton
They broke the mould when they made Ray Cooper. So absolutely talented, watchable and lovable. Simply awesome.
How cool is that!? The three epic guitarists of the Yardbirds on one stage!
Unfortunately, Jimmy was also "wasted", in grief, at Bonham's death...
Ray in addition to talented, a lot of fun 😆😜😆👏👏😍
great video, i love the way charlie watts is pool of calm and ray cooper is all over the place...
Damn Straight!!!
I met Ray Cooper in a bar in London a few weeks ago, he was so nice!
How lucky was you!!! I hope he came to Buenos Aires to play some day
his name's Ray Cooper and he is an absolute legend. Seen him play with Clapton and Elton John and it impossible to take your eyes off him.

The GREAT Ray Cooper strikes again ... and again ... and again ...
What a JOY! Thanks for this. ❤❤
the guy creates so much energy what a showman and great in the groove player i agree he stoll the show and im a guitar player all i could do is watch ray
That Ray Cooper is amazing.
Many don't know Ray Cooper but anytime great musicians get together he seems to be invited, just saying
True story!
A pioneer - he made percussion sexy
Cooper has played with every top Brit performer; many of their concerts and most of their albums. Google him. Amazing resume.
The tamborine ,percussionist, gong man ray cooper stole that show lol he hit that with all hes got ,i wonder how many lines he had hoovered up lol great performance 🎸🎵🎶
None.

He plays with so much soul and feel. Its ridiculously...AMAZING!!
Ray C kicks ass! - always has, always will !!! - cant wait to see him bashing again Sept 14th in Tampa with EJ !!!
Ray Cooper's pure joy...where is my Time Machine?
Piel de gallina. Aplausos para el loco ray!
RAY COOPER REIGNS!!!!

met Ray at the St Regis bar in NY after his Billy Joel / Elton John concert - one of the most incedible moments of my life
You know what this song needs? ................ Even More GONG! 😂
😆😆😁😁😁😁😄😄😃😃😀😀🙂🙃🙃😉😉😉😊😊
Cool as ever Charlie Watts
I was fortunate enough to see a Clapton concert in about 1994, and it was great! I have to say that Ray Cooper was indeed the most animated performer on stage. The exact opposite of Eric Clapton, who as I recall, played some amazing guitar, but made it look effortless.
Really unbelievable:)
They don't call him 'Slowhand' for nothing!
The legendary Ray Cooper on percussion. ROCK'N'ROLL. JANBOY. RN. Rtd.
Charlie Watts is there too! I’ve seen Ray live and he is amazing.
Ray Cooper collected me from school a couple of times when I was very young I was friendly with his daughters....
You can see Andrew trying to slow the band down. Probably the fastest version of this I've ever heard...adrenaline inspired!!
Ray ROCKS!!!
please play this at my funeral - INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've seen Clapton live 3x..
His unplugged version of Layla was a major hit in the US.
I always yell at the stage...NO!!!!NO!!!NO!!!
When he play the first few notes of Layla unplugged at my shows😔
Bloody AWESOME. ROCK'N'ROLL JANBOY. RN. Rtd.

Ray Cooper is the one...
Ray Cooper should have been on "The Gong Show" back in the '70s. No one would have won.
I saw the 79 EJ cooper tour and it was amazing from both. Cooper however stole the show from EJ with his energy and he had the just cant take you eyes off him flair.
Was at one of the L.A. shows and Ray did steal the show.
Even Bill Wyman was laughing.
Ray Cooper's just. . .funny
Honestly every consert he's in is better because he's just so funny
he creates energy
Fantastic ❤
At 5:30 Ray actually breaks his gong! Only just realised and I've watched this so many times.
Same for me. Never seen that before. Thank u!
Thanks for pointing that out,🤣. I went back and got a kick out of the guitarists laughing and pointing
what a guitar team
and ray cooper is fuck awesome
it was recorded at the ARMS Concert in London 1983. it was put together as a fund raiser by the Small Faces Ronnie Lane who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis
Ray is like the drunk uncle that sits in with the bar mitzvah band.
try looking for Elton John in Russia 1979, or clapton live etc, all Ray Cooper classic moments...
ray`cooper`is`great.mirun-roumania
We saw Ray with Elton John one time. He stole that show too.
Ray's awsome. RIP ray. You can check him out on fear and loathing in Las Vegas. If ys want . Peace out
Yeah . .Ray kicked ass . .and Jimmy Page, though really stoned was awesome getting that melody on the last part . .and who was that playing guitar? Pat Boone?
is that also Chris Stainton on piano?
Man they really ripped through that ...
Ray cooper fuerte en percusion Bil wyman de bateria
I have always wondered what the name of the percussionist might be. He plays that gong with absolute conviction. Whenever I see him perform, my eye is drawn to him. Can anyone tell me his name? Thanks.
Thanks. But, is his last name Cooper or Copper? He appears in other UA-cam videos under both names.
Anyone know where and when this was recorded?
The other Charlie Watts?
An ensamble of some of the greatest Rockers.
who is that on the drums?
@kiwizeppelin Thank you for the info.
Why does Jimmy Page always looks like he is staggering when he dances lol
Clapton here look like McCartney in Early beatles works
Eric Clapton, mal amigo : Laila... Le dedica a Patty Boyd, cuando está era la esposa de George Harrison 💔....
Just glad that cooper and jones are there to pick up for Charlie Watts - He looks like he's doing a bad sync job for Stones video.
I don't think that is what went on. At 0:45, he is telling everyone to slow down the tempo a bit. It appears that ven the best players rush when excited. It must be a blast to be in that environment.
Clapton's guitar wrecked oon the solo, very sad. it was recorded at the prince's trust rock gala, probably in the 80's
he is so blown out...runaway tempo...only the drug free band members know it.

Clapton is the most overrated guitarist.
