Not everyone can live in an Art Deco metropolis, but anyone can bring that Roaring 20’s style into their home with the right pieces! What are some of your favorite Art Deco furniture and decor items?

the thing about art deco imo is that when a space is authentic it is unparalleled in drama, sophistication and transports you back to that time. The empire state building for example.

Thanks. This has been fascinating. In the mid- ‘80s, I lived in Brooklyn, Ny. Back then, Atlantic Avenue was lined with antique and furniture shops. It seemed that the forgotten splendor of “ Brownstone Brooklyn”, was now occupied by what had on been on display by its vintage antiques. Deco was prominent. I still regret that I never looked deeper. Perfect “round mirror “ vanities seemed to line the street! You would think that I could find a deco cocktail shaker at least! Alas,….

Great hosting choice with Kaz, who should win some sort of award for being so entertaining and informative all while rocking the craziest topic-inpired fits imaginable. It's worth watching their videos just to see what they are wearing and how it ties into the overall theme. It just speaks to the level of attention and care they take with the chosen topics, which is exceedingly rare on the internet today but so very welcome.

This is sick, so love getting more Kaz. Much love for Memphis style! That's where my design inspiration is leaning towards, although admittedly to the more pastel version of the late 80's. So hype to see what other styles you cover here :)

Brilliant choice of host for this. Kaz Rowe is such an engaging presenter, I’d happily watch a video on the history & significance of the phone book! I love how Kaz knows how to take a massive subject, pull out the key features, present in an interesting & educational way. As for Art Deco style, as a child of the ‘80s, you know I have a soft spot for the Memphis style (which I never would have connected to being an art deco revival), but in terms of livability, I’d far rather be surrounded by the original Art Deco style. We have some wonderful examples here in Toronto; my favourites being the Ed Mirvish Theatre, College Park, & Tip Top Lofts.

Interesting! My husband and I just recently started watching Miami Vice (rewatch for him, first time for me) and I hadn't made the connection but now it's obvious how much of Miami's architecture in the 80s (and some of the interior design elements as well) were clearly art deco inspired. Fascinating!

As always--really enjoyed it. Some thoughts--I remember that the art deco style started to be "rediscovered" in fashion when the 1974 "The Great Gatsby" film and "Upstairs Downstairs" later seasons. AD decor got a boost with the the glitz of Disco in the late '70s then fashion again with "Brideshead Revisited" in early '80s. I was setting up my first apartments late '70s and you could still find deco household items relatively cheaply, but the high end antiques were beginning to get expensive and you could start to find whole antique shops dedicated to the style.
The other thing you didn't mention is the slight shift from Art Deco to Art Moderne in 1930. It was more streamlined and horizontal (recalling transportation like ships and trains) rather than the vertical and decorated surfaces of the earlier Deco (Skyscrapers). Certainly the less ornamented Art Moderne was more appropriate for mass production (at a lesser cost) which would have made sense during the Depression. While it is sometimes considered a "phase" of Art Deco I think its relation to the economics of the '30s makes it worth mentioning.
Always enjoyable and informative. (And I used to live in Chicago and "cut through" those buildings on cold winter days on my way to work!)

Excellent video! I am currently living in an area of France where there is a lot of Art Deco as well as Art Nouveau and the more generic "Fin du Siecle" architectures and decor. I love Art Deco but have had a hard time explaining to my friends what it actually is. (I sometimes resort to quoting the U.S. Supreme Court's explanation of porngrapy - "I know it when I see it.") You've given me a new way of appreciating it and a way of descrbing what it is.

My absolute favorite game to play is a trading cards game called Magic The Gathering. One of the universes in it is a place called New Capenna. It's a fantasy based roaring 20s world. There are a few sets featuring said world and there are special rare versions of cards called "Showcase Variants" these cards have alt art and overall card designs to be art deco themed.
One of the 5 crime families that run New Capenna are Vampires that are a party people. Last year I went to a convention cosplayed as one of them with a deck of showcase cards based around their family.
MTG is like Pro Wrestling, the best part is that there's something for everyone.

    Under-represented history, absolutely! 😊
ArtDeco-- my writing preference because the significance of the name is rather bland: 'Decorative art'-- it surprised me that it became so popular in America, which is a nation not particularly known for its sense of decadence and refinement. Their road restaurants and ice cream salons are missed opportunities!
I always hoped that ArtDeco would know a retro phase one day, and yes, some of it is in the Revival you show. ArtDeco may be substantially influenced by ancient art, but what was designed and produced between 1920 and 1939 is still stunningly beautiful!

Art deco reflects the optimism of interwar society. Since the Great War WW1 had been called 'The War to end all wars' there was a certain hope in the mid 20s that such events would not happen anymore. And architecture had to reflect that in some form. Alternatively brutalism reflects the pessimism of postwar society.

I know the condensed aspect of this video doesn't allow much detail, but it's a bit of a shame that most of the examples cited come only from the United States, @ 6:46 : "old music halls and concerts theaters from *all over the world*" and the only two examples are from NYC and California. Or @ 3:08, where women's right to vote is mentionned : it would have been nice to specify that this was only in the US.
The fact that it's written from an American perspective could be counterbalanced by wondering how this educational content is percieved by non-American viewers / who don't have knowledge of every big moment in US history.

I would welcome welcome a new kind of art deco driven by a forward looking energy. Maybe it'll fully realize the "smart everything" technology with design nods that marry artistic flourishes and form/function? No thanks to just homages to the past and most definitely leave "tropical deco" as just history. 😐

The link to expressionism is a little far of. Rather then embarrassing the technical development as you can see in the usage of steel and emphasising ornaments and natural elements, expressionism tried to get rid of all this, being more critical and pessimistic regarding its current political and social change and technical development toward a brighter future.
