    Art Nouveau is what it would look like if an elf were to build something.
    Art Deco is what it would look like if a dwarf built something.

      With you on the elf part. Deco is more robotic than dwarven to me.

    I couldn't help but notice how heavily the Lord of the Rings trilogy drew on Art Nouveau to create the Elven realm of Rivendell. And I now I also remember how popular all those posters with Art Nouveau influenced art were in the 1970's, though I had no idea what that was at the time. I just thought they were very relatable for people my age. There was a strong desire among us at the time to live in a natural world.

      Totally. Alan Lee's watercolor illustrations for the books used a lot of art nouveau for the elven architecture. something about the connection to nature makes it seem timeless, even though those editions came out almost right after art nouveau went out of style.

    I would call that Miami architecture at 10:34 Art Moderne. It's even less decorated than art deco and has a greater emphasis on streamlining and speed lines.

    to a certain extend I‘d agree to @Setsunakai5 : I feel Art Deco is an expression of taking total control whereas Art Nouveau is the expression of being part and parcel of a natural(istic) force.

      whoa! I really like that distinction. Deco does definitely have a clean cut sense of control. Thank you for this thoughtful comment!

    An excellent video!! Brava!!!! Your voice is marvellous.
    Mucha did not "paint over" his photos, by the way; the photos are squared-up for enlargement onto his work surface. Naturally, the photographic distortions then had to be corrected by eye.

    Much like Deco, your video has so much in such a simple package. Well written and well spoken. Natural and to the point. As for me, I cant pick a favorite of the two as they are so different. I would like to see a hybrid of the two. Skyscrapers sculpted, and chiseled from nature. Classical yet futuristic, minimal yet intricate in the smaller details. A symbiotic future. AI art is very cool in its own right, however, people will always crave human made art. One is manufactured and the other has soul.

    I love this video: succinct, not reductive; simple, not simplistic; relaxed, but not pandering and gauche - and above all, clear.
    But a point of curiosity: why do you refer to Erte with a non-binary pronoun? (NO baggage attached to the question, just a genuine query)

    • @natscanfly1
      @natscanfly1  4 місяці тому

      that IS a good question! I'm glad you asked. I used they/ them because it's nonbinary and also gender neutral. Erte used he/him pronouns professionally throughout their life; however, nonbinary wasn't a thing during their lifetime. Through my research I found a lot of examples of experimental gender expression. I wonder if Erte would have a different relationship to gender identity had they lived today. Erte is a chosen name, possibly derived from the initials for Roman Tyrtov, their birth name. It has no French meaning and it struck me as a not- quite-masculine name that shows a desire for uniqueness. I have no hard evidence to support Erte being nonbinary. But using he/ him just didn't feel quite right.

    • @StamfordBridge
      @StamfordBridge 4 місяці тому

      @@natscanfly1 That raises interesting questions about the assigning of a gender identity to another based on speculation, an identity the person themself did not publicly assume. I can imagine good arguments for this (expanding on what you’ve said) or against it (social restrictions or not, it might be argued, only the individual can determine their own gender identity). Thank you for your answer! I know nothing of Erte’s personal life, and I learned from your explanation.

    I don't see anything whimsical about curved and beautiful lines, and resemblance of nature. None of the pictures shown in the video were whimsical...

      If you don’t see whimsy in muncha or gaudi, not sure you will see it anywhere.
