  • This is F/A-18 Hornet Korea developed by Graphsim Entertainment and released in 1997 for Macintosh and Windows.
    The game supported Voodoo cards - at the time it was really big leap from clean polygonal graphics (like in Hornet 3.0) to fully textured filtered Glide (3dfx) accelerated graphics. I'm using PCem to emulate PC with Intel MMX 200MHz CPU and Voodoo2 card. FPS was limited to 20FPS no matter how beefy PC you run it at. At the time 20 FPS was still considered fluid and at 640x480 resolution it wasn't that choppy loooking.
    More missions to come in both Glide and software renderer.

    I've always wanted to play this ever since trying out Hornet 2.0, man what a great game. I could never get this to run in a satisfactory way on virtual box. Also, I think the original flat shaded graphics of 3.0 is more charming.

      In upcoming missions I will switch to software rendered graphics, they do look nice and clean.

      Korea's software rendering looks like 3.0 but with slightly more fidelity. I prefer it too.

      I remember one guy from the developer, or was it the publisher, writing an actual manifesto defending the use of untextured polygons. Turns out he was right - quarter of a century later "low poly" is a legitimate design choice even for contemporary games, while nobody wants to see the blurry mess of these early 3D-accelerated days ...

    I love this playlist! I am flying F/A-18 PSF at the moment with a Thrustmaster HOTAS X but I do not know how to configure the thruster. In the video, during taxi, it looks like you control the thruster with some analogic control instead of with the keyboard. Is it possible?

    • @damsonn
      @damsonn  Рік тому +1

      This is F/A-18 Korea running on PCem. But IIRC I was able to get the Thrustmaser HOTAS X working with PSF running on Windows 10 too with some axis remapping. Check which mode you have on your HOTAS, there are 2 modes 4 axis and 5 axis, also you can remap the axis in the HOTAS hardware (no software needed), so maybe first try to switching to 5axis mode, then try all the axis - rocker on the throttle, stick twist and throttle and see if one of them control actual thrust in game. When you find the axis that controls the thrust you may remap it (consult HOTAS X manual, you can find it here support.thrustmaster.com/en/product/tflighthotasx-en/ if you don't have paper one), note that when remapping axis you need to do it for both halves of the axis i.e. first remap positive half of the axis to another half of the axis and then negative half of the axis to remaing unmapped half of the axis. I know it sounds strange but it actually is usefull if you want to invert an axis - you just select positive half of the axis and then negative half of the same axis.

      @antonioborondo Рік тому

      @@damsonn I enabled the 5 axis mode, then remapped rocking left to throttle up and rocking right to throttle down and now I can use the throttle!!! THANK YOU!!! I also remapped twist handle to rocking but I noticed that rudders are very inprecise in game. Any suggestion to solve this?

      @damsonn  Рік тому +1

      @@antonioborondo I don't recall there being any sensitivity adjustment in the game or in joystick hardware, but you may find 3rd party software that would do just that. Maybe even official thrustmaster software exist for HOTAS X, though I never used it.

    So good, thanks for sharing, you fookin' stalled on approach though. App. speed is about 135-145 kts, I believe.

    • @damsonn
      @damsonn  2 роки тому

      Approach speed is dependent on gross weight, most important is on speed angle of attack. In this sim the Hornet gets really "floaty" just before the touchdown. Just the game quirk I guess.

    textures only could be displayed if you got a 3dfx vga, otherwise you got a flat scenery with no sense of depth at all

    It's so weird seeing this with textures. I've been playing Korea in software mode a lot lately and I'm getting the hang of it more. There's a lot of things about Hornet that I like in isolation, but it doesn't together as smoothly as I'd like. It still feels a lot more awkward than I wish it did, but I'm slowly getting over the "it's like A-10, but jankier" hump. It definitely has a lot more features than A-10 did, like a mission editor and a much more complex plane. I really wish this game had a clickable cockpit like A-10 though, because it's awkward trying to remember all the keybinds and there's a lot of little things to manage in the sensors.

    • @damsonn
      @damsonn  4 роки тому +2

      Yeah, for its time it was really complex and fleshed out. Even today if you consider that the air-to-air radar covered several modes - Range While Search (RWS), Track While Scan (TWS), Velocity Search (VS), Single Target Track (STT), Auto Acquisition (AACQ), for close-up engagment you have additional four ACM modes: Wide Acquisition (WACQ), Vertical Acquisition (VACQ), Gun Acquisition (GACQ) and Boresight (BST), it's only surpassed by DCS Hornet ;)
      I urge anybody who want to try this sim to dive into Training section first which is really well prepared - it has lessons with video clips and training missions to try out the features the lessons covered.
      Regarding the 3dfx version - it blew my mind seeing it at my friends house back in 1997 or 1998, running on Voodoo Rush. Nowadays I think I also prefer the cleaner software renderer, which supports higher resolutions. Although in 2001 Precision Strike Fighter was released which added OpenGL API which supported the same resolutions as software mode. It also added higher res textures with some other improvements as well as many more missions.

    • @damsonn
      @damsonn  3 роки тому +1

      First you need appropriate hardware (if you run this on actal retro-PC you would need a 3dfx Voodoo accelerated graphics card), if you're using emulation you would need some kind of wrapper. PCem can emulate 3dfx cards, but you need to properly install them in the 'emulated' Windows. Then you need to tick the box in the Settings - Preferences screen in the Video Section titled '3dfxVoodoo hardware'. See 4:42 for reference.
