- In today’s video, we're joined by the Police to debunk common modified car myths that are often floating around the car scene.
I asked my Instagram at @Georgescarmedia to throw some questions my way regarding any modified car-related myths, queries, questions, or rumors that my viewers or followers might have if given the chance to ask a policeman, so in today's video, we addressed a few of them accompanied by MPs Owen Messenger from the Devon, Cornwall, and Dorset Police.

I got followed for a mile or so and then pulled over in Kettering a couple of months ago. The two coppers wanted a look around my just finished hot rod matt black V8 ford zodiac. After showing them the engine bay and the huge brembo brakes I realised they were more interested in seeing the car than trying to catch me out for any violations. Once I realised it was just a chat, I said to one of them "I thought you were going to get funny about the loud exhausts". The copper smiled and replied "it sounds great." then I said "is it alright to give it a bit of noisy then when I pull away?" and both the coppers gave me a discreet thumb up.....
At what point did you bend over for the lads?
That's not cool. Stopping you to have a look at your car while grooming gangs rape Children and people are getting stabbed. I'd report it, they are being paid a lot of money to Police the streets, not go to car shows. They know they can get away with it because the innocent driver will just be relieved to not be in any trouble. If someone was sweeping the floor at Mcdonalds, is it OK for him to drop his broom to go outside because his favourite Ferrari has just parked up and start questioning the owner about it. He'd probably get a warning or get sacked. Do your job n mind your own business of being a Public servant.
* You complete Bastards (apart from the few genuinely nice ones). You're nothing without the uniform and would run a mile from any trouble on a day off in Civilian clothing.

Credit to the officer for being honest and genuine. Clearly someone who has the best interest of others as his priority. If something is illegal it is illegal for reason, they don’t make the rules and are just paid to enforce them 👍🏻It’s about time to see a video showing the police in a respectful manner!! Great video!
@Jack J We aren’t talking about sexual abuse which is a completely different matter we are talking about illegal modifications on vehicles. I haven’t in the slightest suggested that that’s acceptable which it’s clearly not and it doesn’t need to be brought up. I have simply stated the officer has taken his time to discuss myths on modifications for people out there to make it clear which should help prevent issues. There is a lot of negativity towards the police at the moment and it’s good to see that they are genuine and aren’t just out there to “get you”. Yes there may be some police out there who don’t play by the book and make wrong rash decisions which I have experienced myself and yes they should be disciplined accordingly however, those who are genuine should not be scrutinised. The police along with other services are under extortionate cuts with more and more duties and higher work loads. We all should remember that these officers are still humans and want to get home safe.
@Jack J Do you not think that if he could do that he would be?? Do you think he’d prioritise having a chat about mods over cases as such? Don’t try and tell me that sexual abuse is related to car modifications. If this officer could be doing things to prevent sexual abuse I’m certain he would be. He is believing that by delivering this speech will help prevent damage and loss to life out on our roads what is wrong with that?

@@harrier331 4 months ago but I just wanted to correct you.. yes, there are reasons for 'pops' and 'bangs' from a car that are natural and not a design choice. I'd look into turbo charged cars and non-artificial noises. One example would be the latest Hyundai N, check out why that exhaust sounds how it does. For the vast majority of NA cars, you would be right, as the reason for the bangs is just wasted fuel with no performance boost, but cars with the right parts will pop and bang as a biproduct of better performance, making the noises 'natural' and 'mechanical'

That was quite fascinating. Police officers are just like the rest of us. If they see it, or hear it. Then when they stop you and you speak reasonably and politely to them, everything gets resolved. I can remember being stopped for the first time in 10 years, and saying this is the first time in 10 years. He said 'well technically I didn't stop you with my blue lights' so that record still stands' 😂 polite chat and we both said farewell 😃

Self built cars registered before 1998 S reg don’t need a cat, loved the look on the face of the tester when I told him what page of the mot manual he should check when he disagreed with me. Visible smoke test only.

Excellent info, I love to modify my car but I'm an enthusiast not a boy racer and don't want any fines or points therefore it's good to understand what we can get away with legally on the road
Really informative. I've also found if you are borderline then being polite normally works. My numberplate is in the same place as yours but I have the standard one in the boot just incase.

@@larry365 In most cars you'll be safe at an indicated 78, because they usually read 10% fast. Test it with one of the GPS speed apps to be sure. My car has wider tyres than standard which make 70 indicated exactly 70 real.

Completely agree, I have modified my current and previous cars and have fitted sports cats for performance which are significantly more expensive. Uninsured in an accident and creating necessary noise nuisance and emissions 👍🏻

Disappointed with the 'absolute' 70MPH figure for motorway speeds I always thought in perfect conditions the 10% +2 rule applied to motorway speeds now we dont drive Ford Anglias and Morris Minors any more !

I hope the exhaust videos explain why de-catting and large rear boxes actually harm the car through harmonics and resonance. Nice to see a video where typical questions are answered in a proper manner and not hearsay or internet rumour.

It isn't cool to have a noisy car. It's cool to have a fast car that you can drive sensibly on the road and less sensibly on the track. Fast does not means loud. Ask me for a video of a lap record in an MX5 with more than double its standard power for proof.

Be interesting to see the view of upgraded exhausts, especially, like mine being declared to my insurance company, why its an offence when the insurance company I'm with would know 100% it's louder than stock. If it were an offence, surely insurance companies would say no to that particular mod
Looked into this not long ago, afaik if the exhaust is designed to increase performance not just noise then its okay. So the likes of cherry bombs etc are illegal but a proper system that youve fitted for more power isnt
I was under the impression that it was only an offence if it was loud enough to receive noise complaints, or if it's ridiculous and you get pulled over
But perhaps they've changed in the last couple years.

It's so bad, Insurance is hellishly expensive (especially for young drivers), Fuel is $11 per gallon (both Diesel and Petrol) at the moment, MOTs and Road Tax every year, horrible city roads, 70 MPH Speed limit on highways, Horrible traffic. I assume we don't have it the worst but it's pretty bad dude. How bout you?

Fortunately i have a 94 imported GT-Four which due to it age and being an import does not require a cat converter to pass an MOT love the looks when i show them that mines a Decat which is legal 🤪🤟🏻
I spoken to Sergeant Messenger a few times and I found him to be a fair, level headed copper with good judgement. We need more coppers like him.

I just wonder how many “modified” cars are actually correctly insured? Any modification will invalidate your insurance and the insurance company will use this to avoid any claims.
A very large percentage of them aren't.
That is why you notify your Mods to the Insurance Co. and pay the extra premium. Not Rocket science is it? That is why the Police target you. My pet hate is hearing the horrible turbo whistle/whine of stinking Diesel boy racer cars. Sooner they scrap diesels the better.
And you also have the 1+ million cars that the insurance companies have done the paperwork wrong for. They even try to avoid paying out when its them that are in the wrong.
Insurance for cars has been an unregulated mess for 20 years and unless the law frack down on them it will only get worst

I don't think it's quite as straight forward as your insurance is invalidated as they'd like you to beleive. They will usually have to pay the third party in any case, what will subsequently happen is that you'll be liable for the costs and you will be uninsurable.

Yeah, i can remember traffic units being a common sight at meets when i was younger. Just there to stop chavs being dicks, most the meets and cruises were great. Just people looking to show off a nice motor.

Should have asked about headlight alignment and brightness. Some new cars are ridiculously bright. Also what does he think about smart motorways, all lanes driving the same speed bunched up. (Probably won't answer that one without a generic answer).
@@TheSoundzUK Its not the brightness thats the issue its poor adjustment. My LEDs are bright as feck, but set to have a sharp cut off and throw about 120m up the road.
Yet i know loads of people who just dont care, throwing HIDs in headlights that cant handle them, even seen some idiots using HID fogs just for the colour...
Personally i question the mentality of anyone who wants to blind drivers coming towards them, but common sense is something that seems to be declining these days.
@@TheSoundzUK Usually because people mess with them... I have seen it happen at work dozens of times mate. We set them up for MOT. All aligned correctly then people mess with them so the beam is set too high.
8:43 - i read that question differently - as in "how fast the police will go in pursuit before its too fast?"
During a purist there is no top speed. The officers are constantly relaying information to the FCR (Force Control Room) and performing DRAs (Dynamic Risk Assessments). If the driving becomes too dangerous the police might pull back. However it is unlikely you will escape as your vehicle will have been captured on.film and they will most likely be waiting for you at you address when you get home. They also have NPAS (National Police Air Service) which can follow you from miles away.

Mot standard is correct bulb for the headlamp.no hid bulbs in standard headlamp.should be 55/60 what.and has to have correct beam image. Hope thats helps
If you want to fit LED or HID lights you need to change the light projection unit which is accordingly tested to the correct bulb. Putting anything other than halogen in halogen housing by the letter of the law is an offence

The thing i don't get about exhaust noise is a standard ferrari or lamborghini exhaust is way noisier than most ST exhausts (excluding sec. 18 perhaps 😂). It needs changing to max decibels imo.
yes a garage can only fail a car on exhaust noise if they have the same car in the garage to compare at the time. So for a copper to say it sounds noisy, so its a been decatted or messed with is utter crap.
@@martinmalone6324 MOT tester or cop have sole discretion on whether an exhaust is too loud. They might give more leeway for a V12 than for a straight 4.
I found this really helpful especially with the speeding sense of this the 1 question I do have is when driving down a dual carriageway or motorway at 70mph why is it that I see quite a lot of police officers do over 70 in the fastest lane passing all the traffic even when they ain't responding to a call?
Police, Ambulance and Fire will quite often be responding to a call and turn off blues and twos. In certain traffic and/or road conditions they can actually impede progress by inducing road users to try to get out of the way in a hurry which can either cause danger or cause an inadvertent impediment to the emergency vehicle.

I've followed a Police Vivaro van doing about 95mph on a dual carraigeway no blues.. He got off at the exit which leads to the station so my money is on him rushing back to clock off....

Yeah. I'd say at least half of the traffic on the motorway does 80, and as long as the driver is sensible, it's not a big deal.
I imagine they wouldn't be so happy if you tried to do 90 through slow traffic though lol
Most speedos over read. I normally drive around 75 off the GPS, 84 indicated.
Main reason is thats the speed my car returns the best mpg haha.

i had a saab that had full de-cat and still passed a propper mot with a very good remap only just but made it but a pass is a pass ...
my mx5 is pre-cat too so passes MOT with a decat even though it did come out of the factory with a cat
i've heard of modern direct injection PETROL turbo cars pass legit mot's. you have to get them super hot though i've heard. however from what i understand is if it came with catalytic converter in stock form from the dealership when new then it still won't be road legal, it has to have some sort of cat. (sports cat).

@@filmboy18 with the direct injection factory downpipe with a cat as a mk3 focus ST (250) in check with the road legal mods that can be fitted with the tuner advice, to only a (catted) sport's cat which as a cobra (catted) sport's cat is the MOT emissions pass and to a road legal, as in odd sports cat is not (catted) which could fail
@@demon1954 Not quite. I have a 1990 Volvo 740 which had a cat from the factory. Not required on the road until 1993.

Same, it would be good to get some clarification on this. I’ve always thought they were ok as long as they’re not blue, red or green.
Unfortunately they're illegal, same as having any coloured lights on the exterior of your car. I'd been told it's because you could technically be impersonating an emergency services vehicle, green for doctor's vehicle, blue for police, or even yellow or orange for construction vehicles or bomb disposal vans.
Which is questionable, as no one's going to mistake a slammed nissan for a fire engine. But they can't have specific laws for different vehicles I guess 🤷♂️

The police officer seems a very decent guy. Although I know the road traffic law very well from studying it was a very good video to watch 👍.
The question and answer of not having a cat is technically incorrect, cars manufactured before a certain year do not come with them
True but it's about 30 years ago - off the top of my head. Generally, if it had one when brand new it still needs to have one.
I’d be interested in their thoughts on motorbike mods 😏 yeah we have exhaust mods same as cars but we also have smaller plates and other things
Small plates are illegal so having one on ya bike will get you pulled quickly
As Will loud exhausts. However, you can decat a bike as emissions are not part of the MOT - yet!!!

@@adammoorby99 Oddly they dont, and i have been riding since 1977, I was in town when a youth pulled away from the lights on his 125 with a loud pipe, into the side of a fiesta, piss poor road positioning, excessive speed when leaving the lights and a total lack of spatial awareness, and 20 years ago I witnessed a harley go into a car, he was not paying attention and over took me, I was slowing down because I could see soemthing behind the stationery traffic

Great video. Owning scoobies i always have that worry about exhaust noise. Even when upgrading to an aftermarket exhaust with a sports cat. I was wondering if the police allow for the difference in noise levels for certain cars? Will look forward to the exhaust video 👌👏👏

A better speed question would’ve been “the speed on the speedo, or the speed on a satnav” ‘cause my 70 on the satnav is about 75 on my speedo so which do I go by and which do they go by
You should go by your speedo, on average you have a 10%+ 3mph leeway. (e.g. 40 speed limit = 47mph) This is because speedo are necessarily bang on accurate. If you can prove your speedo if faulty then you can get out of a ticket but you'll have to get it fixed ASAP
Connor Adams you’re missing the point though, they say their cars are calibrated, calibrated to what? Also does that account for tyre wear resulting in slightly smaller tyres? What does a laser measure at or a static camera? Surely it’s the same as gps speed accuracy

You're allowed neons, but they cant be on while you're driving along.

It definitely draws attention, which would lead to further vehicle mod inspection as this officer mentioned. But so long as it doesn’t physically affect you and other drivers, it isn’t a problem
@@AttractingMySuccess already spoke to an officer which showed me the law and it is completely legal can be upto 3inches outside the body line and upto 6 inches above and not aloud to have any sharp edges but I do see what your saying
Decats are legal and will pass an Mot on diesels for starters. Cops giving their opinion should get the info correct before giving it.
having no cat isn't the problem passing the emissions test is.
Some cars will meet the standard without the cat, but with little margin and will fail at some point.
I had an exhaust valve on my R33 GTR. Brilliant when you get to the track and there is a drive by decibel meter and for those late nights when you want to creep home late at night.

To be fair if a vehicle in front of me is traveling too slow and i over take i will exceed the limit to pass it safely and quickly,then drop back down to the limit. It's the reason cyclists annoy me, forcing cars to use the other side of the road making the chances of a head on increase.
The cycling thing has recently been changed. If you can't pass them without leaving a safe gap between them and you with out having to go on the other side of the road you should not be passing them till it's safe to do so. My self think this is silly, but I thought let you know
Owen is a lovely guy! Pulled me in my Fez ST in Tiverton a few weeks back as it was flagging up with no MOT but only had it done that morning. He had a good look over the car and was really interested in it haha
Very good. Common sense always. Imagine modding your car, involved in an accident where someone is hurt and other cars are involved and and the mod is illegal. Your world would unravel quickly and would cost you 10’s if not 100’s of thousands. All the mental anguish and sleepless nights, losing your job, facing jail time, huge or colossal debts. It just ain’t worth if for a noisy exhaust
My old Impreza passed the MOT with a de-cat pipe. I ground off the little not for road use plate so it wasnt there and it flew through emissions every time cos it was tuned so well

@@russcattell955i Isn't it one size up or down is ok, otherwise illegal? Simple common sense says stretched or too fat tyres are dangerous.

@@russcattell955i Sure. But, for instance, 195s on 9s are dangerous, irresponsible, and would invalidate your insurance. You'd deserve to be charged with manslaughter if you crashed and killed someone.

@@ChuckieFinzter My car isn't illegal either ☺ Or at least I hope not...I've only added grilles and a dashcam (and the previous owner swapped the steering wheel). The grilles don't cover the plates of course...just the radiators since the manufacturer designed the car to take direct hits as much as possible and that gets expensive...
