  • Here is my third visit to my favorite fields! This was by far my best trip because we received a huge rainfall over night which produced some minor flooding, but it also washed the fields down really well. After a 4 hour hunt I came home with a pocket full of cool artifacts. Join me on this hunt and see what the rains uncovered! I also show my latest Rice Lobed point I recently made out of hornstone.

    That was a jump and holler kind of day ! That hard stone adze is a fantastic find . The pestle piece and adze piece are nice also . Great bunch of very sweet points
    the little birdies kind of snuck in there with the Lamoka big brothers , plowing over time tends to mix layers on multi occupational sites though. all in all had to be an extremely gratifying hunt. Is that a knapping scar to be on your little finger that was camouflaged under bandages on the previous video ?. a dedicated knapper can be detected by the amount of band aids purchased =) Thanks for the share of the hunt and clean up look . Makes me feel good to see you have a day like that . Good luck . Hope you have more like it ---Butch

    Just to have well enough eye sight as a retiree,to find those wee points is a Woo-Hoo moment in itself,,,besides the hardstone Whoo-Hoo's.LOL Those are uniquely made adz's though.Good haul of finds today.Gotta love those Mucks.I do wear a second pair of socks with the top folded down again to wrap the heel well,when walking mud.it seems to create suction with each step in mud,which in a long hunt,kinda irritates my heels,,,,but the socks eliminates the movement.

    My wife and I used to find a lot of them. Unfortunately, no one plows the fields where we found the majority of them. Occasionally, we will find one. I have one large Riker frame with Bradley Spikes. A friend named Steve Addison and Bob Overstreet produced Bob's first book on arrowheads. That is where I learned about the Bradley Spike.

      I have that same problem, I am loosing good fields every year. As a matter of fact the field I videoed this on has now been sold and it is a free-for-all on there anymore plus they just put it into alfalfa and it won't get plowed for a few years. I found absolutely nothing this last year.

    Lots of videos I have not yet been able to get through! being able to do so gives a a good perspective of a persons "archeological" profile! I still just never imagined the points and arrowheads available when I grew up in NY!!! Wow! Thanks for the good show of a great hunt! Man -- I think it would be very cool to set you off in good conditions in one of my strong sites here in eastern NC!! That you can appreciate these really great artifacts when you are able to make such fine pieces is amazing in itself!

    • @indiantrace371
      @indiantrace371 9 років тому +1

      Good deal! Your combination of the two is very exemplitory! It is NOT a simple thing. It is clearly hard enough for folks to even appreciate finding artifacts which are broken or points which might not be perfect. Many collectors have slipped into the industrial era... thinking they need to be finding .22's, 7MM Rem Mag's, or .308's... our minds! lol! I TRY HARD to keep the central understanding of utilitarian need... and am real happy when I see they have had a deep interest in balance, craftsmanship and asthetics too!

    Going back in time again! I have time today as we are being snowed up... with another expected 5-8" tonight! THIS IS EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA!! Anyway... that was a special point at 2:00! Good to go out there in the wild with you looking! Real interesting stuff to me... and do you suppose that the Lamoka followed the genetics of their ancestors prior some 2-4 thousand years? That is... possibly far before any European designated name? Do youthink the Lamoka were in fact "stone age" hunter/gather Indians? Our knowledge of their name alone might place them post-trade goods... post stone age? Just trying to put a very interesting scientific puzzle together!! By the way... LOVE the Rice side lobbed! I wonder why any other napper would not? It is s sweet size and sweey point... I see all nappings as post-modern lithic sculptures. Believe it or not I first began to love stone sculpture though an understanding of the Renascence! What they did with marble!!!!

    OK what is the difference in a Ads verses a Celt? I am really needing to know. Thanks great video.

    • @Paleoman52
      @Paleoman52  8 років тому

      +Calvin's Corner72 OK Calvin, here is what I believe is the difference. A celt is an ungrooved axe that has a straight bit right down the center of the end of the axe. Those were probably socketed into a handle and used the same way we use a small hand axe. Am adze usually has a curved bit and is flat on one side and curved on the other side. These were most likely used to gouge out wood to make bowls, canoes and possibly flesh hides. Does this help you to tell the difference? I hope I explained it right. I may shoot a video on this subject that will show the differences so keep watching, I might do that today! Thanks for watching!

    • @CalvinsCorner72
      @CalvinsCorner72 8 років тому

      Cool that would help out allot. I have what I have saw in artifact shows they call a pick. It is broken but it is about 9" long and is made out of a bluish slate type material. I found it on the Connasagua River here in North West Ga. in a high flat spot used for a camp. I have got a Celt as you described made out of the same type material I found their too. The "pick" I think it is anyway is rounded on one end and the other end it seems it's been ground like a Celt on both sides to a point. Thanks for comments and I will also try to do a video soon on it so you can see it.

    very cool finds.. how do you find out if the native americans were in the field back then or do you just go to a field and look or do you have to do research.. good luck and happy hunting..

    • @Paleoman52
      @Paleoman52  9 років тому

      The landowner told me about these fields and invited me to come and look on them any time, but a good way to find a site that was occupied by Native Americans is to first look for water, then land that sits above or near it. Check for flint chips and pieces of fire cracked rocks and most important of all is to get the land owners permission to look there.

    Very cool finds bro, so how many have you remade these into knives and such? I would have to remake a knife if i found a blade, to hold a knife that was made 500 plus years ago would be amazing, to know it was made and used that long ago by a ancient man too cool.

      I'm not really sure what that rock was, but due to the size I would hope I had seen it. Thanks for pointing that out, I wish I could go and check it out but that area has about 18" of snow on it right now and the corn was harvested before that. It wouldn't be the first artifact I'v missed that's for sure!

      I have a huge pile of my debitage next to my mancave and I give it to anyone that wants it. A lot of those pieces are curved and chunky and sometimes too thin to make anything other than a scraper out of.

    • @Paleoman52
      @Paleoman52  8 років тому +1

      +skyler oien I do believe that you can find artifacts in your area. Back in 1990 I was in Wenatchee Washington and a young fellow down the road from where I was working would stop by and show arrowheads to me that he had found walking in the fields near his home. Native Americans lived all over this country and if you look in plowed or worked fields near water there is a good chance you may find evidence of their time in that area. One thing though, be sure to get permission from the landowner if you plan on walking on their property.

      There is a difference between an adze and a celt. The adze usually has a slightly curved bit with one flat side and the other side beveled or curved. A celt is basically a grooveless axe, with the bit centered between the two even sides.

    That " first find" was most definitely put there by you. You can clearly see the ground separated from the stone where you shoved it in there. I give this video a thumbs down

    • @Paleoman52
      @Paleoman52  5 років тому +1

      The reason that first find was separated from the ground was that I moved it to make sure it was an artifact and not just a flake, it is hard tell sometimes because flakes can really fool you. I always try to show the find as I see it, and I carry a stick along with me to check to see if what I am finding is an artifact. I have never recorded a find that I didn't actually find. Sorry you feel the need to give me a thumbs down but that is your right to do if you feel that you want to.
