  • These are what I came up with for my entry into the top 5 finds challenge that has been issued. All of these finds were made in one big field that was kept private by the farmer who owned and farmed the land. I was given exclusive permission to hunt this field after doing a favor for the farmer and what I found when I went there my first time was simply amazing. I hope you enjoy my top 5 finds!

    Thanks so much Pestleman for inspiring all of us to show the things that mean a lot to us. I'm glad to see that you get me and the way I see things, the secret is what you said, see things with an open mind and expect the unexpected. When I found all those things I was so surprised because they were not things I would usually see while hunting for artifacts. I also have some really nice nutting stones from that field too. Thanks again my friend for starting this challenge!

    The day that I found all those points will be in my mind forever. When I got home and emptied out all my pockets I was stunned by the pile of stuff I had picked up. That is such a good field and then to find that star pendant, it was the icing on the cake.

      About 1960 me and my two friend, John watkiss,everett hinakee,picked up almost a thousand artifacts over the course of 3summers at a big encampment on hickory creek ,between mokena &new Lennox, ill.. it was a time I'll never forget.... a professor of siu told us that there may have been as many as one thousand early woodland Indians lived there..after every rain we were out there..

    I hear ya HuntToThrill, it was surreal, like a dream you didn't want to wake up from. That is one of those days of a lifetime that you rarely get to experience. I remember bending down to pick up a point and looking to my right and seeing another point and looking to my left and seeing even more points. It was crazy! One can only hope that they can have another day even close to that one.

    That frame of those points is my favorite frame. It's a day I'll never forget Tim. It's kind of cool how heavy the Lamoka component of that site is. There are a few strays in there but I would say at least 80% is Lamoka phase points. Thanks for checking out my video. I hope I have another day like that someday but I highly doubt it will happen.

  • @Paleoman52
    @Paleoman52  12 років тому +1

    The word rescued is the key here Jim. I can't imagine how many times those artifacts were plowed up and down since the field was first cleared so it was necessary to pick them up and keep them together before they were destroyed by the ever increasing heavy farm machinery. I'll keep my eye on you when you visit and check your pockets, haha! That field is one of those places you can go and just feel the presence of past people living there. It's a beautiful, removed place.

Excellently illustrative of the way one needs to look with an open mind towards the possibility of finding things completely unexpected or even previously unguessed !!! And the need to stay sharp to not overlook something almost ordinary looking but to an alert brain a freaking cool treasure of a find !! Just a smashingly good ENTRY !!! Thanks.!!!

    What master knapper would walk away from his tools of a lifetime? What lover would abandon the pendant of her brave? What craftsperson would have left a half drilled bannerstone? Whose braves would have abandoned never shot quivers of arrows? Found just the way they were abandoned - in a hurry.

    I find gobs of tools in the desert SW, but we can only collect on private property with permission. With all the millions of acres of BLM land here, it is forbidden to collect artifacts there. I guess it’s good to leave some for the future dreamers.

    I'm glad this challenge was issued because it made me focus on the things that stood out from the rest of my finds. The banner stone is made out of a type of hard greenstone that is glacially deposited in my area. I'll never forget that day finding all those points and what you saw were the good ones I probably had twice that many broken points and scrapers. I wrote an article one time for Indian Artifact Magazine about the star stone called "a possible personal adornment". Thanks for watching!

    I love finding all those other things associated with everyday life and that star stone was the icing on the cake because it showed an appreciation for things not functional but unique and beautiful. The notches in the side gave it away that this was tied with a leather thong and probably worn around the neck. That was a prized personal possession in my mind and so meaningful. A fellow I know that lives down the road has stolen a lot of points off that farm, not good.

    It is so amazing when you find an artifact to realize that each thing you find has a story to tell. I always wonder what the person looked like that made the arrowhead I am holding. The star pendant is the one that really intrigues me because that one must have quite a story all its own. Those side notches really speaks volumes that it was tied and possibly worn. I'm sure there are many more surprises yet to surface in that field.

    Rockhead that's more pieces than I've found in the last 3 years. It's good to fill up a case in one trip and get your hunting with over for the year isn't it? I really enjoy just walking the fields and getting out in nature but finding a few artifacts along the way just adds to the experience. That farmer never really walked that field like I did that day and it was obvious that he would just pick them up as he walked across the site to get to his hunting areas. The banner is my favorite too.

    I'll probably never have a day like that again around my area, especially now since most of the farmers are using no till farming practices. When I started looking back in 1983, it was common for me to come home with 12 -15 good points in my pocket, now its mostly one and done if I'm lucky. I wish I had a video camera with me that day. Thanks for watching Robert.

    Thanks so much cabelly27, I'm glad you checked out my Top 5 finds. What I remember most about that day was that all of my pants pockets were bulging and I had to make a small pile near the end of the field of the hardstone tools that I couldn't fit in my pockets, haha! The next time I went there I was much better prepared to haul the load back, unfortunately I never had a haul like that again.

    That possibility is a good one, the only problem is that the whitish markings go through the stone and come out the other side. I've examined that thing with a fine tooth comb and it appears that the markings are part of the rock, it sure is a rare find, but even cooler is the thought that not only one person found, but two did, and the original finder notched it halfway down on both sides. That imagine almost looks like a man walking and swinging his arms also.

  • @Paleoman52
    @Paleoman52  12 років тому

    It's kind of funny how my top 5 all came from that one large field, when I think about all the other fields I hunt and all the artifacts I have found since 1983. We find a lot of hammerstones in our fields here in the Northeast Mike, they are plentiful because the glaciers that covered our area spread them across the land like frosting on a cake. The Indians had no problems finding a nice cobble to use. Thanks always my friend for all your comments and for watching my videos.

    I had a nice day like that once. I think you have a workshop out there. A kill site wouldn't have that volume of projectiles. A habitation would have greater variety of tools. I think you got the equivilent of a Late Archaic barber shop. A place where things were knapped and drilled and tools were repaired. A social gathering site. I have over 30 perfect thumb scrapers from a tiny area in a field where women likely worked. Use Google Earth and map your finds. A map usually answers these questions.

  • @Paleoman52
    @Paleoman52  12 років тому

    Thanks Richard, I have a theory about that banner stone that makes sense to me. It is possible that he only drilled it that far because he wrapped rawhide around it as it layed on the handle and put a pin in the end and tied that to the handle to keep it in place and from wobbling. This saved a lot of effort drilling it all the way through. I know that probably sounds confusing but I could show you what I mean more than try to explain it. Regardless it was an awesome find for me.

    • @Paleoman52
      @Paleoman52  5 років тому

      I have offered it to the local museum and they don't want any of it as they have a basement full of these things. If I was to give it to them it would be put in a box and stored in the museum basement. Museums don't care for artifacts as well as people that find them and keep them in a collection, that is very well cared for. I actually rescued these artifacts from further destruction from agricultural equipment.

  • @Paleoman52
    @Paleoman52  12 років тому

    Hey thanks for the comments 00hellgramite, I am honored you liked my top 5. Yep, all those points were made out of one type of rock, Onondaga chert. That banner still thrills me when I hold it because as you mentioned, someone took a lot of time getting it that far and then abruptly stopped for some unknown reason, so many possibilities as to what could have happened. Also thanks for the sub!

  • @Paleoman52
    @Paleoman52  12 років тому

    That first hunt was never matched but I would come away with a nice amount of points every year for a few years until the guy down the road got wind of this place and would try to get on there before I could. I would wait until is was plowed and planted and rained on a couple of times then go there, and his tracks were there ahead of me. Eventually the farmer caught up with him and told him to keep off, but he still managed to sneak in occasionally.

    I'm a forensic paleo artist and I've trained my eye to see the subtleties of the maker's marks (lightly engraved faces) and on your first tool I clearly see it. I resurrect the natives into their afterlife by connecting the dots with a pencil then photographing what's there which I point to first as you can see it with the naked eye - I just darken the lines so others can see it easily and the pencil is easily washed off afterwards and the same drawing can be re-drawn because it's actually IN the stone - not my imagination. I'm an avocational archaeologist. Would love to meet you some time. Hi. I'm Rosemary Storm. Archaeology by Storm. This is a great past time and very interesting , I love exploring around hunting for antlers in the spring , but i have always been interested in finding arrow heads , no luck so far but my very first time out I found on the side of a hill what looks like some sort of a tool , something that was held in the hand and used to grind food or something , It would be very interesting to hear your opinion of what it might be , I could send a picture of it , thanks .

    I think I am the only one too that recognizes the more uncommon artifacts in the fields. The bannerstone is made out of a hard glacial greenstone material. It is very dense and quite heavy and comes off the Canadian shield North of us. I was disappointed this year to see that field go into alfalfa because it will probably not be plowed again for 3 or 4 years. Good farming practices dictate this though because it has been in corn for a few years and needs the nitrogen back into the soil.

I was only around in 2012 watching folks videos... never even thinking I might share the finding which was just beginning. Now after about 1 year it has been a fantastic ride! I can see how easily the first four pieces could be overlooked by hobby hunters not really educated in the field. No wonder the owner didn't want Yahoos running around being the usual idiots.

You know he PMed me a while ago and said folks were contacting him, concerned that we were having a problem, and he was laughing his rear off. So he asked me," should I tell them we're just goofing ?? I told him, Not on your life, Not until we got a FAT movie deal out of it !!!! AHhahahahahaha !!!! As if. lol

    Are you sure that abraider is not really an arrow straightener?

    • @Paleoman52

      The reason I have determined that the stone I called the abrading is that it shows the exact same wear my own abraders show as I knapp arrowheads.

    Hey thanks bama jones, I was so thrilled when that farmer came to my house and told me to look there anytime I wanted. I knew about that site from a friend of mine that snuck on there and got kicked off, so I wasn't about to go there without the farmers blessings. He wanted to give all his grandkids an arrowhead necklace made with a point he had found. I did a really nice job on them and I really didn't expect anything in return so I was really surprised when he gave me permission.

    Hello. I enjoyed your video. I live in upstate New York, near Lamoka lake. If I may ask, do you think this area would be a good place to search? Thank You.

    • @Paleoman52
      @Paleoman52  7 років тому

      Definitely! The reason these points are named Lamoka points is that it is believed that the Lamoka people originated and branched out from your area. You should find lots of Lamoka points in the fields around the Lake. Good Luck and let me know how you do!

    I wouldn’t have given a damn if I had permission or not. As long as you uphold the outlaw digger code: leave no trace, cover your holes, hunt with military precision and cherish your finds.
