    Great selection, brought back some fine memories of when I first heard those albums. Mountainscapes has some of best atmospheric music ever made, Rypdal, Jarrett, Shankar all wonderful. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    All great LPs I have heard most of them, but I do not own any of them now..but this renewed my interest again for the ECM label...I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for these LPs or CDs. I have seen and meet Barre Phillips at least twice at festivals in France. A really nice guy, the last that I have heard he lives in the south of France. Really good video Fred, thanks for posting it.

    An excellent collection that showed the incredible range of ECM's output-some compilers of a top 10 would have offered much more well known artists-definitely a genuine and heartfelt selection-well done! Your channel is new to me but I will definitely visit again-It's put me in the mood to revisit the early stuff in my own ECM collection.

    Hay, sorry, old thread to comment on, I know.but this content is still relevant . I would like to thank you for this great video and your recommendations. I purchased "what comes after ", I think it is also a fantastic album, BTW. As I said, thank you , I personally don't know anyone else who likes the ECM sound very much, so finding this thread was a blessing. All the best .

    Hi Fred, Great stuff, appreciate you doing this! It's been my favorite label since H.S. and certainly understand the difficulty in picking a mere 10.
    I found the Reich on vinyl back in the 90's though haven't seen it in the racks since. Yes, it's a mesmerizing record. I love the sort of propulsion and the wide range of tones and colors. It's a timeless one for sure.
    Yes, for solo piano, Koln is one of the great standards. When I was 16 I took that one out of the library and the cover struck me right away. I heard it at the perfect time, and was just getting into the label in general.
    I need to revisit Return to Forever, it's been a long time since I've listened. It certainly was a big change for Chick after the Circle album.
    Yes, love the feeling of the Gateway record. It seems like it was one of the last of the really 'raw' sounding records from the label. I still need to revisit their 2nd album.
    Fantastic Rypdal! That one doesn't seem to get much fanfare compared to the later in the 70's ones of his, which are great too. I really love Barre Philips' contributions on here too. Speaking of...
    'Mountainscapes' is another one I haven't listened to in a long time. I remember it being fantastic. Philips and Surman together certainly never disappoints.
    I would put 'Trance' in my top 10 if not top 5 for sure. There was a period where I would start my day with that one, esp the opening cut seems perfect for easing into the day. I agree very much that Kuhn should be much better known. Wonderful artist.
    The Naura is very much on my list, though know it's rarer than hen's teeth around here.
    Yes, the funkiness of 'Love, Love' stood out right away as an atypical ECM. Can hear the opening bassline in my head right now.
    That Shankar is another mesmerizing one. Incredible playing there. Another one I need to revisit after a long while.
    Hey, can you tell I'm sort of a fan too? Ha. Yes, the depth, variety, and distinctive aesthetic of the label are like none other. Would love to do my own response to this. Would be daunting as well, though a fun challenge. Thanks again for doing this. -Carm

    I have six out of those ten and love them all, and am quite sure the other four I do not have are equally outstanding! A great video here, Fred, and I loved your comments. I certainly haven't heard NEARLY as many ECMs as jaco russell has, but I can't imagine Mountainscapes not being in my top ten! ;-)

    Fred I just had a monster comment telling you some of my favorite ECM titles and some of the fantastic titles that you showed. I accidentally hit the page back arrow and wiped it all out. It was an epic comment showing my appreciation for some of the artists that you showed. Instead of writing some of the names like Terje Rypdal, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland and John Abercrombie. I am just going to say thanks for posting this awesome Gimme 10 ECM. Made my night my friend~

    Great video, Fred. Some of these ECMs are new to me. I'm with you on Gateway... Just amazing. The second Gateway release doesn't quite have the same intensity. This definitely must have been difficult, considering the breadth of ECM's catalogue. I know for sure that 'The Colours of Chloe' would be in my 10 picks, but after that... it's a bit difficult to say. Cheers, Fred.

    When I think of this label, my go to is Eberhard Weber “ The Colours Of Chloe”. Just saying. Was introduced to me by John Zorn when he was a humble record salesman at “SoHo Sounds” way back in the early 80’s in New York City.

    Like your selection and comments. Shankar's OK. Care to comment on his "The Epidemics"? ;-) Of the little I know of Indian "classic" music, it is much, much more than Shankar's output. Closer to European classic music. Still, I like some of Shankar's stuff. But I think Hussain is a better musician/composer. Another name I have not seen in the few "Gimme10 ECM".

  • @jaco268
    @jaco268 9 років тому +1

    A lot of ground to cover here, coming up to 2,500 releases. If there are 50 ''essentials'' on this label, (I say this having only heard in the region of 1,500-1,800 of them) of your ten I'd include Koln and 18 Musicians. Mountainscapes in my next 100 ''almost essentials'' maybe? You've persuaded me to put Who's to Know, What Come After, Trance, Love Love and Vanessa on the turntable again soon-ish, been a long time. You should do another 4 videos on this phenomena, I'd tune in......

    • @bigstar1000
      @bigstar1000  9 років тому

      +jaco russell so what's in your top 5, out of curiosity. For someone who has heard so many it must be impossible....

    • @jaco268
      @jaco268 9 років тому

      +bigstar1000 Not that many, hardcore fans would be nearer 100% than my paltry 60-70%. Just focusing on the vinyl, I came up with a very tentative 25 (so 5 was less possible): Surman's Simon Simon and St Ives, Metheny's Offramp and Witchita, Weber's Chloe and LTE, Garbarek's Runes, Magico and Folk Songs, Jarrett's Belonging, Koln and Survivors Suite, Vitous's First Meeting, MV Group and Journey's End, Reich's Tehillm and 18 Musos, Holland's Conference, Hussain's Making Music , Part's Tabula Rasa, Monk's Dolmen Music, Holland's Life Cycle, Karaindrou's Suspended Steps, Codona 3, Tibbett's Safe Journey. Hassell's more recent Last night ........also a contender, but needs more time to digest. Stanko's Balladyna, Maupin's Lotus (hipsters favourite!), Weber's Yellow Fields...bubbling under for now.

    • @bigstar1000
      @bigstar1000  9 років тому +1

      thanks so much for this. I shall check out the ones I don't know. Great list! You are right about the Maupin. I didn't include it in my shortlist solely because I kinda expected everybody else to show it. It's a good record but it's not a patch on some of the others that I chose. Only my opinion, of course. Thanks again.

    Can't go wrong with ecm considering the breath and scope of the label.
    Need that Reich on vinyl myself.
    Love love is so fucking organic it..like being in a funky womb..lol.
    Love all rypdal period..but ya that one does not get as much attention.
    The naura is simply the shit!..only vinyl i have by him.
    Trance is indeed over looked..Love the version of Ida lupino in particular.
    Never got into gateway myself oddly enough.
    Idk been years since i qued it though.

    'Vanessa' is without a doubt my favorite ECM title. There is an amazing live version of 'Salvatore' on YT. Did we talk about that already? Anyways, I lucked out and found a copy of 'Rainbow Runner' online yesterday (It never pops up!), so that completes the Naura trilogy (of sorts) for me, along with Vanessa and The Call. Do you have the Wolfgang Dauner LP on ECM? I would love to have that one. Choice picks as always.

    I love ecm. I don't have many of the ones you showed. I've tried to enjoy the koln concert many times but it just falls short for me. I keep trying though since its so highly regarded. I do like Jarret in general however.
    ecm records used to be 3 or 4 dollars all the time now they are over $10 most of the time. And sometimes just crazy high in some local shops.
    Have you listened to any of ecms "new series" ? I have not heard much but was disappointed with a couple I did hear. If you have any suggestions on the new stuff please let us know.
