38. HOW GOOD IS THIS! Sailing to Mykonos and Delos in the Greek Islands | Alone in Mykonos | Greece
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- This week on Kawai we continue our journey across the Cyclades on route to Turkey. We begin by leaving the Island of Paros and heading for Mykonos. With 20 knots blowing from the South, our plan is to head North towards
Mykonos and with it being known as the windy Island we plan to use the protected bays on the west of the island as shelter. The sailing is great as we head down wind, with a consistent 20-25 knots.
Sailing in winter can be unpredictable, and with 8 days of Southerlies we decide on Mykonos, which is well protected from this direction with 3 large bays.
We sail up the channel between Delos and Mykonos. Delos is extremely rocky with no vegetation and no inhabitants. The small island of Delos has one of the most important archaeology sites in Greece.
With very few boats still sailing, we get the pick of the anchorages. Mykonos surprises us, and we have an amazing time checking out the sights of this normally bustling island.
Dreamy sunsets, Ouzo, welcoming locals and memorable nights out make for a perfect week in Mykonos.
About us:
Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai. We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia. Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our sailing adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :)

Sailing Kawai
Really enjoyed your sailing videos in Greece, Cheers!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the videos of Greece!
For those wondering Trace and I are well and are still in Australia with the Australian borders closed. How is everyone going, how have you been affected by Corona virus? Stay safe :)
Where is Kawai?
Hi Bryan, Kawai is currently on the hard in Turkey. We can't wait to get her back in the water :)
Glad ye are both home and safe ...such sad times ...thankfully Ireland is no longer in lockdown (I was out of work for two and a half months) and we have been asked to leave the country for essential travel only ...not for holidays ! 99% of Irish people are having a staycation ...we have a beautiful country ...if the weather would just settle it would be perfect.
Great video.. we had planned on visiting Greece again this year 😟 ... thanks for sharing .
Sailing Kawai
Looking forward to you both coming back to sail Kawai
We love watching your sailing adventures and really nice to see you sailing the Ionian
Where we sail every year. Take care
Hey you two. Just went to your page from the link you shared on my post. then I watched the video. then saw the post date and was very confused till I saw your comment post here. So now that I am all caught up. Once again thank you so much for not only posting but offering mentor ship. Seven plus years ago YT sailors helped each other. Don't really see that happening today. So just from that gesture, you win in my book. Hope all is well and you guys are making the best of it. ~ Aodhan & Annette.
WOW! Stunning footage... great job editing this video. cant wait to see whats next. Fair winds!
Thanks guys, appreciate it! Well done on your recent success :)
@@SailingKawai
Excellent episode. Good to see you guys having fun in Mykonos. Keep on smiling. Can’t wait to get back sailing in Greece.
Thanks Peter, are you escaping Australia? How? Are you sailing in Greece? If so have the best time :)
I Love Greece.. New Friend hier.. Love your Channel..
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching :)
Your my favourite sailing couple, more natural and down to earth than the others, love the places you visit and the way you present them. Looking forward to some new places in hopefully the not too distant future, god bless you both and stay safe. Brian
Thanks so much for the kind words Brian. We really appreciate it and glad you enjoy the videos. Yes we can't wait to get back out on the water, hopefully soon :). Take care yourself and stay safe, thanks again Jase and Trace
good to see my favourite 'sailing channel' again with another great video.
Thanks so much Mark!! That's a big compliment :). Glad you enjoyed it and we can't wait to get back on the water, take care
Nice one, how good is Mykanos! I was there in 83...thanks for sharing your sailing life...
Hi Peter, yes we really enjoyed it! We had heard mixed reports but had a great time. Happy you enjoyed the video, and no worries at all!
As a Greek woman who dreams of going to the Greek islands, this episode was so enlightening for me.
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video :). We really love Greece, hope you get to experience it! Thanks for watching
Just a quick hello Merry Christmas to you both from Peter. Looking forward to hearing from you soon and that you will be able to go sailing again.
Merry Christmas Peter! Hope you had a great Christmas, we did in Australia :). I will be posting another video soon and yes we can't wait to be back sailing, hopefully soon. Take care Trace and Jase
Video: 0:00 - 0.05
Swimming in that passageway between those rocks and a 5.5 meter white shark appearing out of the blue cruising towards you would be a moment to never forget. :)
Hahaha well there are no white sharks in the Med, as far as I understand. That's a scary prospect! Hope you enjoyed the video!
@@SailingKawai Don't want to scare you, but they are very much a live and kicking in the Mediterranean. Young whites (85 cm and about a week old) have been caught around Lesbos. Great Whites have to be at least 4 m to procreate, so the mum's can't be that far away within just one week of giving birth to their little darlings. A couple of years a go a spear fisher was attacked just 6 m from the shoreline in an inlet of the island of Vis. On UA-cam there are several videos of Great White encounters in the Adriatic (Rimini area). Furthermore, there is more than enough (scientific) literature available about Great Whites in the Mediterranean. Yes, and I did indeed enjoy your postings. :)
Thank you ..
No worries Neil, hope you enjoy it! Take care
Catching up with your videos has been great watching. Can't wait to get some more.
Just one problem though, your Australian Flag looks a bit dodgy!!
Union Jack is upside down.
Hahaha thanks for the positive feedback on the vids, glad you are enjoying them :). Are you talking about the dodgy Greece flag, because the Aussie flag on the back of the boat looks normal to me hahaha. Thanks for watching!
@@SailingKawai Hi folks
The Union Jack typically has diagonal white stripes, some wide and some narrow, your flag shows them in the wrong position. This indicates it is upside down. No worries though! Only a keen eye like mine would spot it....
I'm back in Greece sailing this September.... can't wait.
Enjoy your next season, fair winds.
Wot the Bell didnt go off...Sorry for the late comment .... good job guys all liked much hugs safe sail ...
Hey again, don't stress, glad you were able to watch it :). Thanks for watching and stay safe in these crazy times! Chat soon
You two have such good vibe :) Great vid :)
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!!! Take care
I’m a bit slow I just seen your comment,
We were so worried about you guys hope will back eith he boat soon
Hi Rita, that's ok and thanks for caring. Yes all is well, names on the vaccination list so we can hopefully get back into Turkey soon :). Fingers crossed early next year. Take care and look after yourselves!
I am really enjoying the content. Thank you. Interested to know how life and plans have changed since your last video.
Hi Jeff, and thanks for getting in contact! A lot has changed since December 2019 (Sounds so long ago). We actually returned to Australia for Christmas and didn't think we would be still in Australia 14 months later. Covid really through a spanner in the works. Since then we decided we wouldn't waste the time and both got full time jobs once we knew it would be a long wait. Australia is really strict with border closures, but we are lucky with few infections. Vaccinations should be complete by September/October and we plan to head back to Turkey and continue our journey. We haven't uploaded our last 3 videos yet, full time work takes it's toll haha. Kawai is in Marmaris so looking forward to getting back and checking out Turkey some more. Otherwise we are both doing great, saving hard so we can be on the next adventure longer hahaha. Hope that fills in the blanks :). Stay safe and chat soon
Uhuu, Nice see you
Hahaha, how are you mate, where are you these days? Hope you and the family are doing well and are safe :).
@@SailingKawai locked at home... terrible...
Loved seeing the other side of Mykonos! We were there in September and it was heaving. We think of you guys often. We are back in the Ionian and just enjoyed dinner in Kioni on Ithaca. We know you guys are hunkered down in Australia and can’t get back to the boat. We wish you guys were over here enjoying the sun and sailing. We are heading south to Crete and then popping over to Turkey to manage my s he gen days. Let us know if we can check on the boat or if you need anything from this part of the world.
Hi Claudia, thanks so much, you are too kind. Yes I could imagine Mykonos would be really different in summer. Ohhh we love Ithaca, so jealous. Yes it's hard being away from Kawai, but we are using the time wisely (both working full time), so hopefully we can have a longer adventure haha. Sounds like a great trip planned. Kawai seems fine, she is getting looked after so all good, really appreciate the offer :). Keep in touch and enjoy the summer sailing. Btw is there less boats?
Sailing Kawai - it is very quiet! We spoke to couple last night in Kioni. They sail here every summer (boat is kept in Prevaza) and he said he estimates only 20% of the boats are back out this season. When we left Gouvia, the whole charter fleet looked like it was still sitting on the hard. It’s a blessing to enjoy this area when it is so quiet, but my heart hurts for all of the locals depending on tourist dollars to make a living. Hoping things will pick up. I think flights from the UK are allowed as of today. Not sure if the Americans are going to get the green flag anytime soon. Check out our Instagram posts @symairmade to see the anchorages. Keep on working and we hope you guys can get back this way next season!
Hi Guys, good to her you are both safe and well, quick question, what font do you use - i love it and would like to use it to name our boat with please…. Cheers from the UK…
Hi Dave, thanks very much, glad you are enjoying the videos. We used the font "Daniel", hope that helps. Yes we loved it when we saw it, took a while to find :). Best of luck and thanks for watching!
🇦🇺😃🍹 A great episode 🥂 take care on the water 🏖⛵️⛵️🇦🇺
Thanks Paul, glad you enjoyed the video, we will, thanks for watching and getting in contact 😁🍻
a great episode indeed, paired nicely with my wine
Always wonderful videos. Stay safe on the Gold Coast. We can’t go there at the moment because Queensland is closed to Victorians. Cheers, Chris ( Melb)
Hi Chris, thanks very much :). Yes we are enjoying the Goldy but miss the European summer hahaha. Yes it's a strange time at the moment, I'm sure even more difficult for you. Stay safe and hopefully the virus is contained in Victoria soon, thanks again!
Loved the video. Great to see others that enjoy sailing and Greece as much as we do. Sailing in October and November is usually good if you can find anywhere that is still open. We should be reunited with our boat next week after a delayed season due to CV19. Your video has got the juices running. Can't wait. Hope you guys get back soon and share more videos. (By the way Cyclades is pronounced Sick-lah-dees)!
Hey Ian, thanks for getting in touch :). That sounds wonderful, i'm really jealous hahaha. Glad you loved it, and yes it's a weird time sailing from September to November, you can really have places to yourselves. We are also constantly watching sailing videos to get us through haha. Yes we are really bad with the names of places and it's not till we get internet we realise how wrong we are :). Have the best time, stay safe and enjoy! BTW where is your boat?
@@SailingKawai Serenity is at Basimakopoulos boatyard at Kilada, near Porto Heli. Launch date booked for 5th August.
Thank you for sharing another amazing episode! Already looking forward to the next one!😁
Lets hope that this Corona nightmare soon will be over so we can continue to visit the Med again. (And I can move my boat to wonderful Greece)
Take care and stay safe!
Thanks Tommy, yep I am looking forward to that day!! Glad you enjoyed the vid mate. Yeah Corona is a nightmare, where is your boat currently? Stay safe and take care
@@SailingKawai Both me and the boat are in Sweden, which also is our homeland. The sailing season here is short (at lest the warm part) so it would be nice to sail her down to Mediterranean instead.
Sailed in Greece a couple of times an I just love it⛵️😍, and I see you do too!!😁
Hey guys, this looks amazing, we will get our cat over to the Med one day! 😁⛵⚓
Thanks again :), would be great to catch up one day for a few drinks and a laugh!
@@SailingKawai hey, whereabouts are you at the moment? We're in the Whitsundays at the moment.
@Sailing Bluefin we are on the Gold Coast :). So jealous, we love the Whitsundays, an amazing area, have fun!
Thanks for the video, I love watching your videos, we have similar yachts (Hanse 430) and you are ahead of me by about a year. I am now stuck in the US as you are in OZ and hoping to get back to Greece soon. I hope that one day we can share a beer and a long discussion. See you soon back on the water.
It's always great to hear from a fellow Hanse boat owner :). I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Yes look forward to getting back! Sounds great mate, would be perfect! Chat soon
I can’t believe you don’t do any fishing
Hi and thanks for your message. I have actually done a heap of fishing, however not that successful haha. I have caught 5 Tuna and a Mahi Mahi. Thanks for watching :)
I live in zakynthos and I watched your video when you went there. I fish a lot and the best lure for me is the Rapala x-rap the white one. Try that next time and I’ll keep watching to see what happens 😄
@ 11.06 that's my mates wig 😂
🤣🤣🤣
What time of year were you there? I've never seen Mykonos so deserted!
Hi Tom, we arrived early/mid November. Crossing the Cyclades we only saw 2 boats :). Nice having the anchorages to yourself. Thanks for watching!
Where are you two?
Hey, how are you? We are back in Australia, have been here since last Christmas due to Covid. The Australian borders are shut so we are both working while we are back. Hoping to get the vaccine in Oz before heading back to Turkey where Kawai is waiting. Australia is in a great position so we are lucky, just can't leave hahaha. Missing sailing but hopefully back over soon. Where are you at?
@@SailingKawai grate news are you going to carry on making videos and your back to it
You should do a video telling everyone you will be back so they don't unfollow you
Thanks rob
Allrighty then did the OUZO , one more and Hugh would have been dancing on the table I'm sure!!, lol Next thing on my wish list in Turkey is Hugh making time with a belly dancer!!! and Best Regard!!...
Hey Thomas, thanks for your always entertaining comment. Yes pretty close hahaha. Well we didn't come across any belly dancers but when we return to Turkey from Australia after Corona, we will see what we can do haha. Hope all is well, stay safe :)
Wow you’re back! Really nice video to beat the freezing winter winds here in NZ. Have you had to go back to work in Australia because the borders are closed?
Hi Andrew, we originally came home to see family for Christmas, then Corona happened and the borders are closed. We have both taken the opportunity to work while we are home and plan to be back early next year to keep the journey going, can't wait hahaha. How have you been, yes we are pretty lucky with the weather on the Gold Coast. Take care and great to hear from you.
Great video, guys. When was this episode filmed?
Hi and thanks very much! The video was from around the 10th to the 17th of November last year. Hope that helps and thanks for watching :)
@@SailingKawai Cheers! And the water was warm enough for swimming? Lol.
Is this the LAST video...?
Hi Chuck, no it's not the last video, I will be releasing more in the coming weeks. Hope you have enjoyed the videos so far :). Thanks for watching!
at 0:03 is that Milos??
Yes it is, we made a video (36) on our favourite 4 beaches of Milos, hope you enjoyed the video :)
@@SailingKawai thanks for answering, yes i saw that video too after this one:) both relaxing -really nice.
Could you please include Turkish subtitles?
Hi Guys. Do you think you will get back to Kawai this year?
Now that you have owned Kawai for a while, can I ask your thoughts on Hanse build quality? (especially the same era as yours) We are looking for a boat to do pretty much what you guys have been doing, and think the layout of the 445 spot on, but I have heard horror stories regarding build quality, and when we visited the boat show in UK last year, they did seem to have been constructed on a very tight budget, hopefully the models 7-10 years old were better, I would love to hear your thoughts?
Kind Regards
Pete
Hi Pete, great to hear from you, have you been well? We are in a tricky position as Australia still has it's borders locked, however we can apply to the government for a pass. We are thinking of leaving this year and returning early next year back to Turkey as we are both working full time now anyway while we wait. I believe Turkey is still locked off from the rest of Europe due to Covid. We have had very few problems with Kawai, she was in great condition when we bought her with only 500 engine hours. I think most production boats are pretty similar, we also looked at Jeanneau, Beneteau, Bavaria and Dufour and liked the Hanse and Dufour the best. I do feel the build quality is getting cheaper and felt the newer Hanse boats felt creakier than ours. I feel if you are buying second hand the previous owner is really important and how they maintained the boat. Hope that helped, if you have more specific questions please ask :). Take care guys! Jase and Trace
Enjoyed the video - thanks. It seems a number of cruisers with transit logs spending time in Greece, have been told that getting a stamp in their transit log from the port police is required in every port and failure to do so can result in heavy penalties, what has been your experience??
Hi Paul, yes we have been told this. On most occasions we have visited the port police and they have been shut. We didn't have any problems when we checked out. I did hear of a big fine in Kos for this reason. I think if you are staying in one of the larger islands it would be worth your time :). Hope that helps and glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching!
you sailing with good whether. how much wind you wont sailing?
Hi and thanks for the question :). It depends on a few things, we would normally stop in the 40's and wouldn't leave the anchorage at this time. If we were out sailing and it reached these levels we would have very little sail out and be as safe as possible. For us in the Med, the mountains and waves would be the biggest issue :). Hope this helps
