My father is 65 years old with diabetes and heart problems and previous oncological situation. I told my dad to stay home but he said that the Swedish government does not allow you to do so unless you have a sick leave document from a doctor. I wish I was a doctor by now to help him stay home. I am crying inside while I try to pass my last medical exams. Please people don't be selfish think about the eldery because we need them too and they are loved by many. ♥

That is so not true! I live in Sweden and the government says that you should stay at home as soon as you have any kind of symtoms. The government pay the sick leave and there is no need get a sick leave document after a week (which is customary in normal situations) because of the pandemic. The elderly and people in risk groups (like your father) are advised to stay at home and avoid social contact. So either your father has misunderstood this or is misinformed.

Some suggestion from china: 1. be care of infection between family mumbers; 2.doctors/nursors shoud be extraordinarily carefully, they are in very high risk; 3.for each case, seek backward and try to find in detail how he/she is infected and gather info and find the most frequency ones and share it to public, this needs many people, can try

The low number of death in germany are quite easy to explain in my opinion. No Test -> no death. I'm living in a town with about 100.000 people and they tried drive through testing for several hours last week only allowing people to be tested with an advance notification from a doctor. They stopped after 40 tests, complaing doctors were abusing this service sending people for tests without doing enough diagnosis work on their own. There were numbers released last week when cases doubled from 15 to 30 and that's still the official number. When i was in town today it felt like a holiday season, people were in street cafes and restaurants relaxing from their toilet paper shopping sprees. We might have no masks here in germany, but i guess we can use all the toilet paper floating around for some great mummy style protective suits.

No Test -> no death --> That is a wrong conclusion. Actually, it should be the other way around. Because death doesn't care how many tests are performed. It is more likely that testing in Germany was very early and targeted, so the number of unknown cases is currently not as high as in other countries. This means that mortality in Germany corresponds more to actual mortality. The global estimates are 0.5-1%, in Germany it is currently 0.2+%. That will adjust accordingly. Another not so important point could be that in Germany the ICUs are not yet so overloaded and the patients can be ventilated for longer. Of course, test capacities in Germany should be greatly increased in order to isolate the infected and minimize the spread.

The assistant director of RKI, Dr. Schaade said, they don't even have data on hospitalization and severity distribution because they only collect data on testing as is required by law. Consequence is there is only data on severity where individual cases got reported from nursing homes, not from hospitals. German numbers of deaths is from nursing homes only.

My coworker has self-isolated because his wife and child became suddenly terribly sick, but since the health authority won't test them my coworker can't get tested, and now our entire shop is unsure if we've been exposed! We work with the public daily as we are an essential service.

Same here, I have a friend in Taiwan who had connections in China and he was sending information regarding the real situation on the ground there. I told my friends here in Canada that they should prepare for a pandemic and that laughed at me. I didn't do anything crazy but we have plenty of food to last us a few months and I filled up some cans of gas and made sure our cars are filled up. We have not left our house since Thursday of last week. It was hard on the kids at first but they now understand and we have been making crafts and playing in the back yard. I've also been getting work from my wife's "To do list" done so that's been nice. We have a park across the street and there are neighbors and their children playing together as I write this. Canada is at the bottom of the curve right now, unfortunately it won't be until reality hits hard in the next few days that these people will wake up or be forced to wake up with police imposing fines on public gathering.
We have some harsh weather here and have had some situations in the past like SARS. Since I started a family I took note of what happened during the major ice storm in Quebec and other issues such as the major power outage in the early 2000's. Lessons learned were to kept a reasonable stash of cash hidden, have a generator on hand, especially if it's the middle of winter and get fresh fuel if there is an impending storm.
Being in Canada and an avid lover of the outdoors I have plenty of places we can go that are the middle of nowhere with plenty of fish, wild game and no people around. Years of back country camping has equipped us with all the gear we would need to be comfortable in some of the most remote parts of the north where we would be lucky to see another person for months. I hope the world learns from this but history has a habit of repeating itself. What shocked me was learning about the Spanish flu in University. People look at the horrible death toll during WWI and yet they don't know that a flu took out more people than a world war! Stay safe and fingers crossed this thing doesn't mutate into something even worse.

I x-rayed a number of suspected COVID patients here in the UK last night on isolation wards, and I have concerns regarding the recommended personal protective equipment PPE. Case studies show that COVID 19 could be spreading via aerosol rather than just droplet spread yet we are having to go into small rooms with patients with a surgical mask which do not seal around our faces. There were eye shields at least, but I fear we're going to run out of these things. Word to the government, do whatever it takes to get us decent PPE else there won't be enough healthy health care workers to look after patients. There probably wont anyway though through 10 years of cuts.

    Dear Dr. John:
I'm your'e average joe in Canada. How long will this last, given the measurements taken by my government and the current spread trends, do you think all this craziness will realistically last? Also do you think this has a chance of making the rounds of the world and being any sort of seasonal trending virus, possibly from vitamin d rates reducing pneumonia (increasing with the average sunlight intake as far as i've heard).
I know that was long but i'd really appreciate a response and would like to thank you for all your wonderful work and positive energy as we all deal with this pandemic.

BBM: Johns Hopkins in USA reports Pandemics tend to naturally burn out in each region in 3 to 4 months because virus ceases to find new hosts. However, others report that the social distancing that flattens the curve of infection rates also slows down the conclusion. If people delay spread, more people survive; medical resources manage better; but the total number of infections stays about the same. In USA, we were told last week that the pandemic in North America would be over by about July (May to July depending on when infections reached an area). We were told to expect the peak firc3 weeks in June (when food trucking might be interrupted). Now we are told it might go on until there is a vaccine (12 to 18 months). I rather expect that setting of expectations might be political--so that by October USA politicians can claim some remarkable victory. Perhaps that is cynical.
You will notice the number of fatalities will start going down and continue going down, alerting you peak has passed.

Branch 4. I’m a English and despise politicians and everything they do and mostly not do. Buffoon Boris is a case in point. BUT, our politics are SO different from yours in USA. Apart from both being equally boring, it’s incredible yours lasts SO long that you start canvassing for the next president when your president is only 2 yrs into his 4 year term! SOOO Boring! But THE main difference is, that ours are NOT run by and on money, to finance even the electioning. It’s incredible to us that you need to be a millionaire to run for being president...or have millionaire friends backing you. I know we have millionaires here who contribute to each parties funds. But never that the Prime Minister has to be a millionaire to even get in. I suppose Trumpet had something about him to make himself a millionaire, but his whole attitude, the way he speaks, his appalling use of Twitter, his humongous mistakes he writes and has to correct, and his big pouty face. To me he is as much a buffoon as Boris is. Still, doesn’t alter the fact that they’re all out only for themselves.

The reason for the spread is travelling. The reason why many African countries have not been affected so far is because of less travelling within the region compared to Europe. All the cases in Africa are traced back to Europe and the larger percentage (so far more than 95) is European nationals. None from China. The latest case today is a report from Djibouti ministry of health. It's that of a Spanish national who travelled into the country on the 14th of March. Its is selfish, to say the least. All people from affected countries should stay at home so as to reduce spread to unaffected areas.

Northern Italy is also home to a huge ski industry. She says 100,000 people a week come in from throughout Europe . They stay a week, skiing and hanging out in the bars. Then they return home with the virus. That is how it traveled so fast.

Here's a few recommendations. Hope this helps (some of this info from this channel's videos):
If you're planning on staying inside, keep yourself warm, even if you're not sick; it makes it harder for the virus to live in your body, and if you get a fever you need to keep it as long as possible. Bringing it down will make it spread quicker. So hot showers, food and water bottles are important. Also, it's been said tablets like ibuprofen aren't recommended, as they lower fever.
Vitamin D tablets/supplements. I found out I had a deficiency in January, and got them for 3 months. Especially if you're not outside/there's not enough heat/sunlight in your country or area atm.
Breathing exercises. Even if you're relatively young/ healthy and have no underlying conditions (e.g. I'm 22) these are so important. It'll strengthen your lungs, improve your breathing, and lower your anxiety and stress. For every day since January, I had a horrible pressure in my chest (not from this illness) and last night I could barely breathe. Today I've woken for the 1st time with hardly any pain and I can breathe deeper.
Keep yourself/your home clean. Sanitize anything if it's been outside/touched by others, even if they're not ill. However, don't try to be super immaculate; everyday germs are still needed/around your body, and trying to completely remove them will make your immune system vunerable.
Get as much sleep as you can. I made myself panic for the last 3 nights after seeing the number of deaths, and I was scared to sleep. No sleep will lower your immune system and stress you out. Also sleeping on your stomach/front may help, rather than your back.
Keep in touch with people, even if you can't visit them. It'll make you feel so much better and still have a laugh with them.
If you do have symptoms but they suddenly go, don't think they've disappeared. If you're able to stay in for a long time, use it as a precaution. I've heard some had very minor symptoms, and then it came on really fast.
Make sure you eat/drink water regularly, even if you feel ill. If you have this you're going to need energy to help fight the disease, and going without will make it harder.

Surgeons and nurses performing surgery wear disposable face masks. The purpose of face masks is thought to be two-fold: to prevent the passage of germs from the surgeon's nose and mouth into the patient's wound and to protect the surgeon's face from sprays and splashes from the patient.
I have done a vast amount of research
and listened to fair amount of expert’s
talking about whether wearing a mask
can protect you from catching the coronavirus and the answer is not very clear
at all but the one thing that seems clear is
that it can help with the spread of the virus as if a person sneezes it would stop most of the droplets from spreading and like many I tend to have droplets spit out even when I speak. So surely if everyone person was to wear a mask would it not make a difference even the smallest amount would be helpful
to take some pressure off the NHS.

On the funeral bit in Italy: it's not just that, unfortunately. Folks end up in the hospital, and die there alone, because you are not allowed to visit them. Hello, I'm a retired fire captain with extensive emergency response experience with something for folks to consider regarding everyone's future -
First, retailers need to work with government to ensure that all employees are tested and provided with personal protection equipment, these supplies do not need to be in the hands of the public.
Second, establish a system for scheduled shopping e.g. alphabetically by last name determines when it's our turn to get supplies. This stops panic buying and hoarding. Once people see it works it will relief much anxiety and fear.
Third, communities and all local governing bodies and their employees need to be tested ahead of the public and given the same protective equipment so that they can mobilize their resources and carry out the tasks necessary to ensure everyones safety during the lock down.
Fourth, neighbourhoods need to unite and identify those who are in most need of help. Give up prejudices and past differences in favour of tolerance and
    compassion.
Fifth, and this is the stark reality, there are not enough ventilators to save everyone and there won't be a vaccine until 2021. As a fire captain I had to face the decision of performing a high risk rescue based on my assessment of whether or not this was a savable life. Italian doctors have already spoken of this extremely challenging decision and the deep emotions it creates but for the good of all it needs to be made.
Finally, life has become more meaningful whether we want it or not. Here is western Canada we have enjoyed a robust lifestyle full of choices but that doesn't exist anymore and it's not returning anytime soon. Expect delivery times of our food supplies to be slower and don't expect to get our favourite ice cream or candy bar. We are all one tribe now dependent on one another's good faith. Follow the instructions of our governments and medical/science personnel. Ride it out with integrity and embrace the idea we're creating a safer future for our children.

The WHO recommendations are to test as much as possible not to test everyone. Containment testing would still have to be prioritized over surveillance testing, the whole point is that there must be sufficient surveillance testing. As to world shortage of tests, each country independently developed genetic tests when China published the genome map well in advance of distributing patient samples hence they could not develop the traditional antibody tests but could develop genetic tests based on gene editing techniques such as CRISPR and PCR. Some countries such as Canada had some provincial health systems develop their own presumptive tests, a move that American states are going towards now that their attempts to distribute tests have basically failed. WHO selected the German test as the standard they will distribute to where needed however the US refused these tests as they are not FDA approved. You can't really say there's a global shortage of tests because everyone has different tests and are even testing for different markers in the genome. Now, there is a shortage of the reagents and a shortage of the swabs as they all seem to be manufactured in China, Italy and Spain.

Besides the virus, there is great fear about food as people have panic bought supplies and wiped out the stores. Fortunately I've been watching this channel since January and made preparations ahead of time. The fear of a full lockdown is gripping the populace. We just today closed our border with Canada and I am very grateful for that as I do not believe they are doing nearly as much as the U.S.. they're numbers seems way too low especially as the disease was present in toronto many weeks ago. I just wish that a 2 to 3 week quarantine would go into effect immediately to in my mind get this over with. I feel that we would at least know who is sick and they can stay home and get treated and the rest of us can cautiously move forward. Thank you Dr. Campbell for your coverage of this outbreak!

I am glad you singled out Sweden.
I have been following and covering how Sweden been handling this thing on my vlog since February in my broken English.
Please keep your videos coming, your videos are a been relief for us living in Sweden, since our officials just belittle and talk this thing down.
Thanks for your excellent job on this channel.

Here in Japan, I really wonder why the cases haven’t increased much.
it’s quite surreal to watch people going about as though nothings really going on. Crowded trains etc . There is awareness but a huge dependence on masks being their main defense. Business as usual pretty much except for schools. I’m suspicious about how much actual testing is going on

Same here in Taiwan. The restaurants are still full. The schools are open. The pulic transport is full. No lockdowns. They are checking up on arrivals, but I am really surprised we only have 100 cases.

This virus has all the features for a sneak attack. 80% mild symptoms mostly for the young/active means they will be most likely to spread the virus and overlook the risk of asymptomatic spread. Before they have an ICU problem, it will have to infect likely 10-30 others before 1 is sick enough to show up in ICU.

Hope your country is not hiding the true numbers due to other agenda in hand. So too to Taiwan.

Could the reason for Germany's death rate being so low because the have a high number of ICU beds per 100,000 people? And more ventilators. I googled this chart for all of Europe.

I read they were not registering deaths of corona if they had underlying issues....

I was shocked that other countries have so few ICU beds and ventilators compared to us in germany. Actually we're discussing the fatal results of the privatization wave in the early 00s, where fomer public hospitals were sold to private companies and the whole health sector had to become more economic/ efficient. Without this development, we could even be in much better shape than we already are.

Sounds reasonable, also I'd imagine more beds = more trained staff to man the beds

Didn’t they do that in china too? Register deaths - cause of death heart disease even though it was Coronavirus

Normalcy bias can infect anyone Dr.
That is probably why you overestimated European response to this outbreak.
Thanks again for the videos 🙏

And my normalcy bias allowed me to overestimate the response from the American government.
