Wow, thank you guys for 20,000 views! I know that probably isn’t considered a whole lot in UA-cam land, but it’s way more than I ever expected! So cool to see many of you getting excited for your own thru hikes this summer - enjoy! 😊
Awesome video of your experience! I couldn’t find the dates that you went. Would you mind sharing them? EDIT: found your dates. July 13 to August 9, 2020.
Great video. Loved seeing the sheep herder. I would love to do this hike, it's practically in my backyard. These old hips that I've been dragging around for the past 70 some years just won't hear of it. I still get to do my little day hikes. Happy trails!
i have no idea how i didn’t find your videos before my colorado trail hike. wish i had. but, it’s nice to watch them and see some now familiar sites filmed so well.
I love your photography skills and commentary. So well done! CT has been on my bucket list for years and this video has moved it to the top. Thank you for sharing and taking the time to put this together in such an artful way!
Wonderful experience you had. Enjoyed the scenery and some familiar trail segments!! Hope you had a great meal at the Boathouse Cantina in Salida. I sure did one lazy afternoon. And breakfast at the Brown Bear Cafe in Silverton can't be beat. Thanks for some great memories.
I laughed SO hard at the mud shots and the "well, we did not beat the weather" parts...as a long time thru-hiker, it pretty much sums it up lol. Really awesome, thanks for sharing (:
Man - this is AWESOME! Brings back the memories of the trail that I have completed so far - and sneak peaks into what I've got left to see! Thank you for sharing!!!
One of the better videos on the CT. Good job! Very good photography, and good music. Avg of 18 miles a day (you didn't mention taking any 0s) is a great relaxing pace. My compliments, sir.
Loved it! Did portions of segments 25 and 24 this summer and can’t wait to get back on the trail. This really helped me visualize the trail experience. And it’s so incredibly beautiful!
A question, Mike. I'm planning on hiking the CT this summer and my girlfriend would like to join me for a week or so. Are there a few sections you'd recommend, bearing in mind altitude acclimatization and accessibility to a town where we can rendezvous? (She'll be flying into Denver from the east coast and is generally very fit.) Thanks in advance!
Hey great question Chris. Everything in the San Juans is amazing, but it’d be harder to get there from Denver. Maybe your best bet would be having her join you for the Collegiate West segment. I think you can get a bus from Denver to Leadville. Then hike the collegiate west (a stunning section!). It is high but I wouldn’t worry too much about altitude if you’re both fit, just take it easy the first day. Then catch the Bustang from Salida back to Denver.
@@MikeWindsor Many thanks, Mike. That's exactly the idea I had, mainly because of the great scenery in the Collegiates West. The question is whether that Denver-Leadville bus is a real option. I did a bit a inconclusive research but need to look into it some more.
Awesome video - very insirational/motivation for my upcoming CT journey later this year; 2 questions: 1) When did you asart your hike? 2) Any recommendations for food storage (e.g odor proof bag, rat sack, etc.). Thx again for your videos - greatly appreciated!
great vid! was planning on hiking pct next year but time might not allow! will be looking at the ct instead! thank you for the inspiration. it was pretty cool watching that shepherd, did you guys chat at all?
Hi Mike, great adventure! I was curious what you used for food storage out there to keep it safe from the critters and/or bears. I am thru hiking the CT next month and can't decide on which method would be best. Any helps is appreciated. Happy trails!
Hey! I use a Loksak Opsak and always sleep with my food. I know some disagree, but I think it’s better than hanging food and I’ve yet to have a problem in 4,000+ miles. Happy trails!
@@MikeWindsor Awesome, ok thank you! I was torn between doing just that (sleeping with my food in an Opsak) or buying an Ursack and tying it to a tree. I've heard that hanging isn't very ideal for much of the trail.
@@MikeWindsor oh man thanks so much... never had to worry about a March start date on the pct when I went. So when do you think the earliest you could go in spring and not hit too much snow on a normal year? Do most people hike it NOBO or SOBO ?
June is considered early in all but a low snow year. Many go SOBO, and doing so will allow you to start a little earlier as the northern stretch of trail stays a little lower in elevation.
Yeah July is a good month to start. Nah I won’t, but there’s lots of good info out there on resupply and the like. Hope you’re able to get out there, it’s a great trail!
Great video Mike! I have aspirations to one day thru-hike the AT, but I want to do a smaller thru-hike first to acclimate myself to long distance hiking/backpacking. This video has inspired me to choose the Colorado Trail. Thank you so much! I'm close enough to drive but was curious to see if you had any trouble checking your pack? Again, thank you so much!
Aw thanks man! Yeah the CT is amazing, hope you can get out there! I took my pack as a carry on, and checked my trekking poles, tent stakes and knife. Would be so much easier if one could carry those on. Oh well 🤷♂️
How much time was saved hitch hiking? i want to do this but 28 days doesnt seem like very long to do it and still play lol at the same time im not sure i could afford to take a whole month off work. i shoulda jumped on it early last summer in the middle of the pandemic and took the voluntary lay off. Instead i worked thru the whole thing lol also did you go solo or with a group? (I did see you with people occasionally) Im thinking solo might not be the best idea when I go but im not sure i know anyone that dedicated. First step is getting a month and a half a head on all bills lol Two weeks extra just in case lol
Hope you can get out there! Went solo. Hitchhiking is almost a necessity as many of the towns are not directly on trail. I suppose you could figure out a resupply plan that didn’t involve hitching, or arrange shuttles ahead of time but hitching is much easier (and fun :)
No bear can required. I did also make a gear video if you’re interested, should be able to find that on my channel! Probably 4-5 days average food carry.
I never really planned campsites in advance. There’s plenty of spots along the trail, I’d usually just have an idea of where I wanted to go that night and look for a site as I got close. People also do often comment on the Guthook app with campsite recommendations
I don’t know if you still watch these comments, but it would be super helpful to me if you could maybe ballpark what your total budget was on trail?? Trying to get a better idea of what I should expect to spend, a rough estimates fine to, or maybe you could do a budget breakdown video would be cool for the future to. Thanks! I appreciate..
Hey, gosh I don’t really remember well enough to give you a good breakdown. But I definitely did it on the cheap. The biggest expense is food. I try and avoid spending too much time in towns because it gets real easy to drop some $ when you do. Otherwise your expenses are pretty limited. Oh and of course airfare out there was prob the second biggest expense next to food.
Nice video of great scenery! There is a reason nothing grows up there. The elements are harsh in July. Imagine November or February. I would have liked a little more info on location by day (i.e. where you found to camp). The education videos of pack weight and gear are usually over the top; especially when they are all closely the same. But info about location and timeline is always helpful.
Mike, this is a real quality video, congratulations! I like that you were not continually sticking your face in the camera (not that you have a bad face :) - and talking too much into the camera. I would much rather see the spectacular scenery and the views along the trail with your soundtrack - and you did a great job providing this to your viewers. Well done!
