THE COLORADO TRAIL - 500 miles in 12 minutes

- The Colorado Trail runs for nearly 500 miles through eight of Colorado’s mountain ranges. To hike the entire trail in one go is called a thru-hike, and this video shows Caleb’s and my journey. :)
Congratulations on the thru-hike, enjoyed the scenery. Looks like the bridge at 5:03 is in good shape. Helped build it in 2019 as a volunteer with the Colorado Trail Foundation.

@@nicolemittman3223 Thanks to you too!! 2019 was about my 9th or 10th season volunteering with the CTF since 2006. Posted a YT video of the work. Waiting on the 2022 trail crew schedule to plan out this year. Still backpacking/hiking with CTF friends met over the years.

Love the video planing on doing a onewheel XR journey on the trail for half the distance first time. But bought a solar monocrystalline blanket that's waterproof and only 1ft by 14 inch and 12lb. So pretty easy to carry on my back folded up.
300w getting a little over 300w from testing with converter that will power my electronics and step up the voltage and lower the amps for my one wheel XR to charge off of. If I travel for a few hours at night I should be able to get two charges during the day giving me probably about 50-60 miles a day given that it probably won't be able to charge to the full amount and the terrain will eat up some of the battery but not to bad. The one will excels on off-road and uneven terrain.
I want to do a few shorter test runs locally but as soon as the weather gets just right I am going out for a experience.
But the added advantage of being able to get water from River sources is a big save on what I need to take with me.
Loved your video of the CT! You really show the BLISS that only a thu-hike can bring! Oh, I also know the dirt, the pain, the hunger, etc - I'm a thru-hiker too...but, your POV is so loving - of the trail, of hiking, of nature - I can't wait to thru-hike this trail - hopefully, in 2025!

Guy Wills thank you! For resupply, typically people hitch into small towns along the way, but with the virus we wanted to limit exposure, so instead we packed 10 days worth of food at a time and only had two resupply boxes, both of which were delivered to us via a family member.
@@nicolemittman3223 Did you just have them delivered to a local post office in the two towns? What was your average milage/ day? Thanks, and strong work on that hike-thru!
@@brianmyers220 we had a family member drive out to trailheads to give us resupply boxes and also take us into town for a shower and hot meal. A lot do send boxes to post offices to resupply though. Our usual mileage was anywhere from 15-25 miles - just depended on the day! Took us 30 days.

Incredible and beautiful. I start first week of August. When was your hike? I just left the Appalachian Trail after 730 miles. Great job and among job on the water colors. I wish I had the ability to do that.

Segment 24, when you drop into the elk creek drainage, is by and far the best part in my opinion. The whole San Juan range though takes the cake. The general rule of thumb is that it keeps getting prettier and prettier the further you go (Denver to Durango)!!
We only hitched once because of covid, but I can tell you that the ladies who took us said they only stopped because I smiled! Haha. I’d also take advantage of the free shuttle bus to Frisco.
I'm currently planning my CT Thru Hike - my first one! Your video is beautiful. I can't wait, I'm counting down the days to Denver. Do you guys have a gear list?
We never ended up making a gear list!! Haha. This was very much planned on the fly - I was supposed to work a different trails position but covid cancelled it in may. We spent may camping in Utah, ordered some stuff online, then went home to Nebraska to pick it up and head back to the CT. No more than a couple of hours of very informal planning went into the trip!! We owned most of the backpacking gear already though so we mostly just used that. If you have any questions about any gear in particular I’m happy to answer!! My biggest weight saver was only wearing one outfit the whole time! Haha.
How long did it actually take to complete the full hike?
About a month!

What's a recommend time for such an adventure?
Thanks! We hiked from July 4-August 3. Highly recommend that time period for warmer nightly temperatures, good water availability, little to no snow hiking, etc. Biggest danger of July is being in the alpine during afternoon thunderstorms. But the pros of July I think make it a great time to hike the trail!

Hi thanks!! At the top of the first big pass (Georgia pass?) there were SWARMS of mosquitos and we only had the tiniest vial of bugspray and it was not enough. Probably depends on the time of year you’re hiking, but I’d suggest bringing an actual can or wipes of bugspray. I also wish I had better utilized my sunscreen on the portion of trail that was above tree line for 30 miles!!! We also began adding lemonade powder to our gear about halfway through and it was a huge morale booster for essentially no weight added.

I liked how the music conveyed feelings I felt about my time on trail - 500 miles for humor and love, meet me in the woods for adventure, and San Luis for that beauty and serenity you mentioned.
