- HMS Prince of Wales deploys at short notice for large-scale NATO Exercise Steadfast Defender, filling in for HMS Queen Elizabeth with an issue.
HMS Prince of Wales (R09) is the second Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier and the largest warship in the Royal Navy. The carrier had to deploy with no more than an 8 day notice to cover for the other ship of the same class.
HMS Queen Elizabeth was meant to deploy for NATO's largest exercise since the Cold War; Steadfast Defender, with over 50 ships and 90,000 armed forces personnel participating from all 31 allies and NATO partner, Sweden. However, the UK flagship suffered a starboard propeller shaft issue preventing it from sailing. The Prince of Wales sailed with just 8 days' notice, after originally being on notice for 30 days.
3x Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters were embarked on board. F35B Lightning II fighter jets and any other aircraft will join the ship later at sea.

Well done Royal Navy and all 7 crewmen for getting this afloat in such a short time!
Under armed and minimally trained. I'm assuming she has a full escort.
To get a reserve aircraft carrier in operation within one week is a fantastic achievement. God bless all that sail with her...
Not to mention all the scaffolding that had to be taken down at short notice! I don't know if you saw the pictures of it beforeheand! I've never seen so much scaffolding in one place before!
@@Aeronaut1975 I think they mentioned it took around 6 months to put up and 6 days to take down , unbelievable .
@@bartley7953 They took it down in under half that, so that is an achievement in itself!
Brilliant effort - RN fulfilled its commitment despite the technical problem with HMS QE carrier. No sign of the french substituting at short notice !!
For those it applies . Stop doing this country down !🇬🇧
You are right , the people putting our country down live in freedom payed for by the lives of men and women who gave their lives for our country and its people. The people complaining do not have the balls or the guts to serve in the military. They are leeches on the backs of our services.
Absolutly agree...We are so lucky to live in this GREAT country and I so wish people would not put this country down. Sadly I am seeing so much division and it is just terrible to watch the negativity.
Try understanding the WEF's 'Sustainable' and 'Net Zero' policies for a global technocracy whereby we completely lose our sovereignty. Our navy has been hollowed-out deliberately. Just be honest with yourself. We haven't even got the vessels needed to protect our coastline.
Stop doing this Country Down ! 🇬🇧
We are a great country even if some Brits don't think so , it's hard times and you either man up and deal with it or you can be the first in line when shit goes down...
Well said, doubt any of the haters have ever served. Probably government artists, drawing the dole.
Agreed
safe seas, to all who serve and sail for the freedom of this country
Thank youI for sharing great pictures 😊
There is something about seeing military might, we need to support our serving men and women, and hope and pray that we are not heading for a war in the east or with Putin, I served in the army and was so proud, we need to make our armed services great again. God bless to those on board HMS prince of Wales. Stay safe, prayers for hope, love and peace. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Cue the usual idiots doing the carriers, Navy, air force, aircraft and the country down in their sad need to 'look clever'.
Beats me why they need to do this. Have pride and change the CD ....
I wonder why the crew were not lining the decks ... we always lined the decks when leaving & entering port ... Ark Royal R09 ... The Mighty Ark :)
Time moves on, they are much leaner manned and are probably still busy after a week of getting her ready for sea ie stowing stuff. Todays RN still does proc A but only on special occasions ie if they have been away on a deployment for months. Normal operations is Proc C, just essential working watches on deck.
That was known as Procedure Alpha and is now for ceremonial entering or leaving harbour routines. Non ceremonial is the norm
Thankyou for protecting the free world
Don't worry there in the AA and RAC
As a former carrier sailor in the US Navy, I would love to be able to tour a Queen Elizabeth class carrier.
I think its nice sitting Portsmouth old town where all this stuff was filmed…then walking around the HMS “Mary Rose”
And the “Victory”
I wish you all good luck and good health and serve us well like you always have. Go and show these whos boss . I love all you brave men and women who, at times, risk their own lives so we may all live in safety, peace and harmony
There's been so much negativity surrounding these carriers, but getting one ready within a week is very impressive tbh.
We're all impressed by how quickly they pulled it together when HMS Prince of Wales was expected to be undergoing regular maintenance in port.
Unfortunately the negativity comes from uninformed people who have no clue how the RN works and to be honest are spouting rubbish from years ago. Shame really, I thought this country was patriotic until the last few years when its obvious that a large percentage takes great pride in slagging anything off thats British.
Great video!!!
I presume that the F-35's are going to be flown on board from Marham in the next couple of days. I guess that way it keeps everyone guessing how many have been deployed for the exercise. Great effort by everyone to get the ship ready in such a short amount of time,
Lmfao, that is not how carriers work, nevermind ever since last year when you crashed one, they have been grounded and your carriers have no fighters and just helicopters all the time. 😂😂

Wow, we can do a lot of ‘power projection’ with three helicopters. No doubt they will fly on the three F-35s as soon as they can find them,😉
How embarrassing the other carrier breaking down these are modern ships, prince of wales has had its issues as well
I served in the RoyalNavy for many years on fixed wing carriers. These carriers have no catapults and so no Awacs. It's a massive design flaw.
We don't need cats and traps, our aircraft can cross pol onto any deck, those on cat carriers are massively restricted. We have merlin baggers for awacs and RAF Poseidon MRA1 operating globally for maritime surv
They have airborne radar carried on Merlin helos.

This is the next generation. Plus on the 5th of February 2024 the ministry of defence will be getting 138 F-35Bs As we are the Only level one partner with the US we make 15% to 20% of every Jet made. And 50 by 2025 in the 1st tranche coming to the UK.

Bloody corrupt politicians
How long before it breaks down again… the HMS Prince of Wales has spent more time in dry docks than open oceans… what a joke!!!
Britain is becoming a joke as everything is headed towards stupid USA. That is why the cargo ship was on fire in Red Sea.
This is why you build no-less-than two. Maintenance and reliability are always an issue with large, complex naval vessels. EDIT: I wonder what HMS Hood's reliability and time-at-sea readiness numbers were? In the end a fatal construction flaw did the mighty Hood in. Sadly...over 1000 lives were lost that fateful day.
Big boat for a few helicopters.
The jets usually embark onto the ship a day or two after it leaves port, it gives the ships crew a chance to check that everything is working and rehearsed before beginning flight ops and embarking the jets onboard. All completely normal stuff. Having said that, yes, we are currently short of both jets and pilots...
@@Aeronaut1975
If you say so but my recollection of the HMS Invincible being deployed on active service to a war zone (the Falklands war) was that it had a full squadron of sea Harriers on display on the deck , plus a few helicopters.

Do we actually have enough F35 as a nation for two aircraft carriers as well as some based at RAF Marham
F35s aren't meant to be in large squadrons. They're multi-role, and can down fighters from very far away without the enemy knowing they were there.
Also, fighter jets don't stay on the ship when in dock. They join the ship when it's out at sea.
No, the navy version of the f 35's have been grounded since both america and britain crashed one at the same time last year.
@@tylerdurden4006 Yah need to stay under the bridge fella!
@cjjk9142 138 is nowhere near enough with the world in the mess it is we should’ve at least ordered twice that this is a trouble as a nation, if we’re going to operate on the world stage that is nowhere near enough frontline next generation aircraft
@@tylerdurden4006 so I dont see them flying over me on a daily basis then, strange, must be some new aircraft we have that look identical.
With no planes on it.
Look how high it is out of the water. There are no aircraft onboard.
It is standard practice for an aircraft carrier to leave port at the beginning of a deployment without an airwing aboard. The ships crew need a day or two to check that everything on the ship is working as it should before proceeding further, and embarking an airwing. This also gives the flight ops guys a chance to review and practice certain proceedures. It also works in reverse, at the end of a deployment, the airwings will usually depart the carrier a day or two before the ship docks when it is still a hundred or so miles from shore. They only dock with aircraft on board if it's mid-deployment for things like supplies, maintenance, or for a couple of days of shore leave to give some of the crew a break.
Where is it sailing from?
Portsmouth
Stay Home and prevent more destruction in World.!
UK should make their own weapons and planes like the French. Cannot always rely on the Americans. They sell you expensive but substandard stuff
Stop the boats
No flag flying at the stern as she left harbour ?
Probably struck the ensign staff ready to embark the aircraft once she leaves the area. The ensign was on the main mast in the sea position,
You guys do realise a deterrent only works if your enemy knows about it. Constantly sending out a carrier bereft of aircraft isn't much a deterrent at all. Carriers are supposed to have the aircraft already on them at all times otherwise it's a pretty useless ship. The fact is it shouldn't need "getting ready". It should be ready at all times. The enemy, whoever that might be won't wait until we are.
So never do any maintenance, and keep the aircraft onboard at all times? tell me you dont know how the navy works without telling me.
Aircraft attend when out of port from different airbases.
I can't understand why such a mega size carrier for only what ?? 41 aircraft.
They deliberately designed it to be much larger than required for the planned air wing so they could achieve a specific sortie rate.
Having such a big flight deck lets them land multiple aircraft while also launching them.
They've also added a lot more automation on board which enables them to run the ship with a similar sized crew to the previous class they operated which were 1/3rd the size.
@@Benjd0 Thanks for the information.
Hi it’s ur best friend ❤🎉
Any chance of stopping the dinghies arriving instead of going to another country first???
Police always have to have there 2pence
Why are they operating the radars in Portsmouth harbour?
How far will it get this time
Well last time it crossed the Atlantic carried out flight trials and came back so what’s your point?
Why two on deck islands?
One's the bridge for the ship, the other's the air traffic control tower.
@CobraEmergency that's what they're used for, but the actual reason is due to there being 2 power units spaced out, so there's a redundancy as it can sail with one. And it was the twin power units that dictated the twin island design as the exhaust had to be directly above. 🙂
@Maurice_Moss Ahhh more insightful! Thank you.
All new ships have teething difficulties in the beginning of her life at sea!! P.O.E WILL BE AWESOME ONCE THE LITTLE ISSUES ARE SORTED OUT!!
Hope it works ok

In what way to we not have a great record
Better take a tug for company
The thing keeps breaking down .
Actually Admiralty recently announced they messed up having a ski ramp launch....they should have settled for a flat deck .
What a Million pound for something they don't want and will spend another million converting it back ?
Did the ever wonder why the American carriers are flat decks .
What the heck it's only taxpayers money.
No wonder their fleet is a total mess , many can't even do valuable sea time and trials 😊😊

I see no aircraft. Well apart from some whirly birds.
F35's only join the ship once it is out at sea.

Because it's been bought by selling shares in it to the CCP. Like Thames Water and other vital, critical strategic concerns.
Lol, still only 3 helicopters for those "super" carriers. You can see inside both aircraft bays and they are completely empty. Did they place a bunch of generators just so it doesn't look so empty all the time? Why generators? Doesn't it have its own power source? Lmfao 😂
Got to be a troll at this point. 🙄
The carrier returned from deployment a few months ago, they're not going to store the aircraft in the ship the whole time.
They're also not going to land fighter jets aboard her in the middle of Portsmouth, simply not how it's done.

@@chrisharvey592I think there's some confusion here.
HMS Queen Elizabeth was due to depart last week, but aborted due to issues with the prop shaft found during checks. Likely similar to the issues PoW had last year which were resolved.
HMS Prince of Wales was on 30 days notice to deploy, they believed they could have her ready by Sunday to replace her sister ship, but it was delayed until Monday when it eventually departed.
