You’re truly in the groove. One of the slickest bass lines EVER. And created by the funkiest bass master himself, Mr. Bernard Edwards. Excellent rendition.
Thanks !! Yeah man, we're on the same wavelength :). Chic happened to bring out their best music during an era that happened to be called "disco", and therefore it is categorized as "disco", and they surely influenced many other disco hits, but it sure is much more interesting musically than many superficial European disco phenomena of that time.
Hi there, thanks for all your enthousiastic reactions :-). Yes I could play along with Rebels, but I don't find the song typically Chic enough, and certainly not doing justice to Bernard's swing. It's a bit of a strange bird. And about this one... I don't think I really nailed it, but after knowing it for 30 years it was worth a a try :). Re-discovered it just now, actually, hadn't heard it for over 20 years. Anyway I'm playing it more authentic now than 30 yrs ago, that's a fact. Cheers!
Thanks. Keep up the popping notes! Bernard Edwards sometimes played notes that sound just a fraction longer than the sound of a bass drum, so there you have it.
Hey man u are a true talent. Much of Chic's music was considered disco but us ol' skoolers call 'Funny Bone' funk. And you play that bassline like a true funkateer! Keep up the good work!!!! Luvd it!!!
I believe that you would perform Chic songs with a much more authentic Bernard Edwards sound than does Jerry Barnes. It's like, Nile basically sounds like he did on the original song. Jerry doesn't even attempt to give us Chic fans that bass sound we came to know and love.
Hello, yes, it has been discussed extensively in comments in other videos of mine... I guess N.Rodgers decided to let go of the ambition to keep sounding as the authentic Chic sounded in the '70s, and to let the sound of the band as it evolved over the years live it's own life. But I myself find it unforgiveable that he thereby would allow the bass sound, which is after all thé signature aspect of the early Chic music, be changed and replaced really by a sound and approach that is so un-Bernard-like. This is why I can not bear to watch a Chic concert or modern versions of the old songs. Call me a purist or old school, but those songs are milestones in modern music and should be respected, I think, even by their own co-creator, even though he has the right to artistic freedom. Another reason might be that he wants to preserve Bernard Edwards' legacy by on purpose choosing a bass player and sound that differs greatly from the original, to avoid having a clone or close imitator in the band, which would probably put a stain on Chic performances. I mean: either do the real thing, or do something really different, not something that resembles the original.
Do you happen to have tabs sheets for all the Chic songs or possibly be able to direct me to them? I'd love to learn how to play many if not all of Bernard's bass lines.
Hello. No tabs. Use your ears !! I have played 20 year without knowing how to read even a chord chart. Analyse the music, let it seep in, assimilate it and play !
On this question, I always revert to my adagium: "who needs tabs anyway?". I never play with tabs, do it all by ears. It's a jam in E, that much is clear. But of this song I do not know the exact notes myself. Actually this would be one of the only songs I would like to see tabs of myself, because there's so many subtle undecypherable magic going on in B.E.'s bassline.
You should be playing with Nile Rodgers for living.
@Scutte2000 You are totally correct. Jerry Barnes doesn't seem to even attempt to play Bernard's sound.

I have to say you, my man, are the nuts! - absolutely flawless.
You are setting the standard here.
+asprice65 Thanks, not meaning to set the standard though, but all the while inviting everyone out there to put it even higher :).
Beautiful looking and sounding bass. Bernard would be proud.
What an incredible bassline. Bernard was such a beast!

brilliant playing and excellent track choice....love! ♥
Thats some groove you've got going there!! As the previous poster said, you could play with chic, well done!!!!
Lol. No one can match the great Bernard Edwards. I mean NO ONE.

I have always felt that way myself regarding Rebels. Too me it almost sounds like a Chic song played backwards, if that makes any sense.
Thanks. Keep up the popping notes! Bernard Edwards sometimes played notes that sound just a fraction longer than the sound of a bass drum, so there you have it.
Love your videos! Great audio quality, really helping learn this tune

Yes I do, have done so since 1979
