I bought a universal remote so that I can direct-dial a channel but I see Roku took away the channel numbers. It seems not long ago TVs were easy to use!
My biggest gripes about Roku: 1 Add an honest-to-goodness Web browser app. This would be really handy for Amazon, Etsy, etc. 2 Be able to side load add-ons for installed apps i.e., ad blocker for YT, personal screen savers, et al. 3 Make remote buttons user-programmable 4 Rechargeable lithium batteries for the remote (we don't use earphones with the remote anymore due to all the batteries it uses)
I'm 100% AGAINST a remote which requires recharging. I travel for work often and I can't count how many times the remote's batteries are dead on arrival. With the current setup, I use rechargeable Eneloop batteries and have a small pocket charger in my travel bag. I can swap them with fresh ones and be up and running immediately. If I used Roku's rechargeable remote, it'd be at least an hour. Not to mention it becomes e-waste when the internal battery craps itself, which would happen in just a few short years. Lithium batteries don't have longevity on their side due to their chemistry. Honestly, for everything else you mentioned, go get an Nvidia Shield or Walmart's ONN streaming box. I have both and they do everything, minus the rechargeable remote. BUT.. the batteries last absolutely forever in their remotes compared to the Roku's. Even the Nvidia, with it being backlit and lighting up any time it senses motion, probably goes a good 6 months between battery changes. Our ONN box remotes go... well... we've had them for at least a year and still haven't changed them.
@@grayrabbit2211I actually make sure the batteries are fresh anyway. No matter what kind of battery it takes it’s always subject to leakage. Always check your batteries for leakage. Duracell batteries are just about the worst. The rechargeable batteries for the Roku seems to be a good idea, but again, always check your batteries in every unit on a monthly basis at least.
My peeve with Roku is with Live TV! I must select favorites and start from the top of the list every time I use the channel guide. I want Favorites to be sticky! Once I select Favorites I want the channel up/down buttons to only scroll through my favorite channels. I have been bitching at Roku about this for years and all it get is crickets.
We canceled Xfinity because they kept raising prices and wouldn't sell for less. Went to T-Mobil 5G. We get around 110 to 160 Mbps down most of the time. More than enough for us. Fifty bucks a month!
Question for Luke: The biggest issue I have with Roku is how some apps are so extremely quiet when you play the show or movie. Hulu used to be half the volume of the ads, watched Quiet Place Day One on Paramount+ last night, had to turn it up to 100, still couldn't hear it. Plugged the remote into a speaker, turned it up to 100, and had to crank up the speaker volume to hear it. Max is much quieter than the previews. Disney+ is quiet. Yet PBS plays perfect sound. This is what I want you to get to the bottom of.

We were cord cutters 1.0 in 2015. Then we moved to rural northern New Hampshire in 2019 and became cord cutters 2.0 as our internet is wireless line of sight. We stream everything as we only can get 5 PBS channels with an amplified Mohu Leaf indoor antenna in our loft. We actually love streaming everything as we watch what we want when we want, and an awful lot of UA-cam.
We had T-Mobile home internet for about a year. When working 500 down and 30 up. Mostly it wasn't reliable even with an external antenna. Every once in awhile maybe four or five times a week you would notice something changing maybe on the T-Mobile side where the internet would go away for a while. We now went back to fiber and while more expensive we don't even think about internet anymore. Having fiber and living out in the country is a win-win.
Personally i would love to see a PIP (Picture In Picture) feature. That way we could for example: Have the kids playing Xbox or Playstation while watching a movie at the same time. I hate that tv manufacturers stopped putting that feature on tv's. Most tv's had that feature in the 2005-2010 era, but it just went away. I could be wrong but i just don't hear about or see that feature anymore.

We cancelled Spectrum cable when it lost ESPN at the start of football season. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people do the same with Direct TV this year if they can’t reach a deal.

So when they set the orice of Venue, they also set the max networks that are part of it can charge stand alone. I think ESPN is crazy if they think anything over 20 bucks is viable. Unless of course they have some app only sports or, as luke suggested, they become a RSN.
Hey Luke, just thought I would post that I recently purchased my own cable modem, so I wouldn't have to rent one from Cox. I just signed up for the DirecTV special but I really don’t watch ESPN that much. The DTV Choice has my RSNs and FOX/CBS/Amazon has any football I would want to watch. I don’t watch Disney Channel either.

I’ve been using Roku since my first one in 2012, after cutting the cord in 2017, now have 4. Other than the initial purchase price of the player, Roku does not charge for anything. You’re either paying for streaming channel subscriptions, or being scammed by someone. But, it is not Roku.
The horror that the device informs you of the services and content available on the device. That’s literally all the things that Roku itself puts on the home and screensaver. I really don’t understand people being upset or mad about being made aware of the services and content available to them
Cord Cutting 3.0: People go back to basic cable with no converter boxes required - they have about 100 channels and they are happy... They'll stream from one or two services. They'll also go outside and experience the world in real life ;-)
We will be removing ROKU since they took over our ThisOldHouse Insider subscription and are now forcing us to buy ROKU's subscription format of This Old House Insider. Since ROKU owns the product they can do that but we also can leave ROKU for stealing our subscription. Their TOS can do that legally. But that's not ethical. And they will be gone from our TV shortly.
Sports apps are never going to be the major deal. Few people want to watch a baseball game on a tiny screen. Sports is watched on big screens. And geolocation is not available on most receivers that drive these screens. Sporting events are scheduled for times that people will be able to go to the stadium or be at home in front of large screens. And not at work nor on the go carrying phones around.
The biggest irritation with ROKU is those Netflix and Hulu buttons on the remote. Somehow fat fingering a key always winds up with Hulu rearing its ugly head. If these clowns think this makes me more likely to subscribe, they are sorely mistaken.
My question of the day is gonna have to be. I have some issues that Roku doesn’t show up anything what I have saved on my save list. I will not show any more Power Rangers that I have saved
No have not done cord cutting 2.0. No 5G or fiber home internet. Satellite Internet to expensive and some limit data. Only other option is DSL and would only get 10Mbps and pay more in three years time then current cable bill.
Roku needs to fix their stupid DVR, once you record something it keeps recording that episode over and over. The only way I’ve found to stop it is by catching that particular show in the guide and manually turning off a recording there. This has nothing to do with “new only” setting which deals with how an entire season is recorded. I’ve found the DVR just records the same episode again and again no matter how times I delete it a few days later it comes back.
Roku does not have a DVR, either as part of their system or their app. Maybe the DVR you are talking about is in some app on your Roku device (UA-cam TV, DirectTV Stream, Fubo, etc.)? The way the DVR worked was something I hated about UA-cam TV, and why I went with Direct TV Stream.
@@jerrydonovan7507 I actually originally didn't like that YTTV would record *_every_* instance of a show that was recorded, but the shows are neatly listed by season and episode, so as long as I'm not limited as to how many shows or how many hours of recorded shows, it's not a bad thing.
@@johnmoore3504 Roku does not a have any type of recording option. Sounds like you’re thinking youtube tv, which is one of the few apps that has a DVR (Library).
If Roku didn’t insist on monetizing the life out of their product and content offerings, you wouldn’t have people accidentally stepping in things like this. I mean, monetizing the screensaver? Creative bordering on ruthless.

I really don’t understand people being upset or mad about being made aware of the services and content available to them
There is no "Thumbs Up". ?????????? UA-cam problem?????
Commercial mania - horrible commercials including those stupid snuff chewing beavers that are shown in duplicate constantly!! 😡
The biggest irritation with ROKU is those Netflix and Hulu buttons on the remote. Somehow fat fingering a key always winds up with Hulu rearing its ugly head. If these clowns think this makes me more likely to subscribe, they are sorely mistaken.
Rokus biggest issue is slow operating system, freezing home screen.
My question of the day is gonna have to be. I have some issues that Roku doesn’t show up anything what I have saved on my save list. I will not show any more Power Rangers that I have saved
The biggest issues with Roku is that they've not released any new product in 3(!) years... and my Roku stock reflects it.
No have not done cord cutting 2.0. No 5G or fiber home internet. Satellite Internet to expensive and some limit data. Only other option is DSL and would only get 10Mbps and pay more in three years time then current cable bill.
too not to not two
Roku needs to fix their stupid DVR, once you record something it keeps recording that episode over and over.
@@jerrydonovan7507 Sorry you are right - its the Hulu app on Roku
