Please check this video no matter you bought the whole kit or just the JoyCons shell, you will see how to unplug and plug the flex inside of the JoyCons without damage them.
    UPDATE:
We got some complaints about the Y screwdriver, saying that they strip the original screws.
We found 2 reasons about this problem:
    1. the original screws are too tide;
    2. our Y screwdriver is too small.
Some customers said our screwdriver is just too weak, but we have iFixit Mako kit, it also strip if we don't hold it tide during unscrew. So the main problem is our screwdriver is too small for us to grab it tide.
Solution 1: push the screwdriver hard when you unscrew, and do it slow. Just like: push, unscrew, push, unscrew....
Solution 2: buy a professional screwdriver kit with Y00 size...

I screwed mine up hahaha. That’s what I get for doing it at 2am. Be careful as you put the ZL/ZR triggers back on to not damage the actual button/switch underneath. Apply vertical pressure only, don’t try to slide it on (I managed to rip the cage off that holds the small black top of the button). Also, extreme caution must be taken when reinstalling the ribbon cables. Ensure you have the proper tweezer tools and line up the connector properly to avoid damage to the ribbon and connectors.

To anyone doing this mod, please don't just yank those ribbon cables out like in this video. There are latches on each one so they'll just come right out, no force needed. You risk damaging those ribbon cables when you just pull them out like that. Also, disconnecting the battery would be a best practice.. that way if you make a mistake you minimize the risk of shorting something out.

It should have been easy but one of my screws was in ridiculously tight so it stripped. It was on one of the sides where the joy cons go. We ended up having to drill through the screw. Unfortunately it’s impossible to put a screw there now but at least the system holds together. Not the fault of this manufacturer at all. It’s Nintendo’s fault for screwing it in so damn tight!

For anyone considering/currently doing this, I'd advise not to detach the ribbon cables, it's possible to do it without detaching, just makes it more inconvenient for sure. One of them clicks back in place just fine, the other is very finicky, and falls out of place easily (At least in my experience). Overall though I definitely recommend doing this, I did the wood grain and it looks so much better than the stock neon red/blue.

I'm happy with my new ExtremeRate Super NES shell however I would recommend that anyone who plans on performing the procedure use tweezers on the ribbon cables and most definitely lift up the latches on the ribbon connectors, in this video, specifically the Left Joy-Con the cables are just pulled out of their connectors. I would also recommend a more detailed instruction with a narrator. I'm trying to be helpful not too critical of this video because it was a quite difficult procedure.

I just replaced my shell with a SNES one. Here is my feedback.
    1. Looks great.
    2. In this video, the ribbon cables are just pulled out. Fortunately I have done enough of this type of thing to know you pull up the little latch to release the cable first to avoid damage.
    3. I did the right Joy Con without watching the video after doing the left one. I did not realise how much more complicated the right was :) But I managed it.
    4. My one BIG mistake... trying to re-attach a screw in the Joy Con that was too long... it burrows into the front of the new Joy Con shell making a small hole before I realised :(
    5. I lost a spring on the R button :) Fortunately eXtremeRate give LOADS of spares
    6. 2 of the existing screws got bored out and could not be removed. So I had to pull out the drill and a little tool I have for getting out screws where the head is busted. Again, fortunately eXtremeRate give loads of spare parts meaning it was easily replaced.
My one big criticism of the eXtremeRate kit, my only criticism in fact is the screwdriver. In this kit I got a screwdriver where you swap the heads. This made the process lengthy and annoying PLUS it is not magnetised. The screws are so small that a magnetised screwdriver head would have been awesome. I mean, I managed, but that would have made life easier.
Other than that, great kit with the screwdriver being my only gripe. This video has flaws but gives you enough to do the job. Thanks eXtremeRate :)

    This is gonna be long.
My thoughts on the finished joycons: I brought the yellow ones and they have a very nice soft touch to them. I am very happy with the finished product and it looks like what i ordered.
The shell: As stated above they have a very nice feel to them and they look as if they came from nintendo themself.
The equipment included. I brought mmysel an extra set of tools as many reviews say they pack a bad screwdriver and bad screws. I was quite surprised as when i unpacked it i found they now include a better screwdriver. I still used my own ones on the first joycon however i stripped my first screw when putting it back together. I used then managed to get it out as i had a bigger Y screwdriver. I the put in he replacement screws for the outside of the shell. For the second joycon i used the extreme rate screwdriver and had no problems.
Final thoughts. I would order this again however if you are buying this i would still recommend you buy a set of nintendo screwdrivers as they come with useful stuff like tweezers and plastic tab things you can use to get the battery out.
    5/5 stars.

I found that the left joycon was a lot easier than the right. I ended up breaking my right joycon when trying to connect one of the ribbon cables. I bought a whole new joycon, tried again and managed to get past the part I broke the first time, but then finally made it to the end where you have to connect the two ribbon cables to the board and could not connect the one under the battery for the life of me. So what I found to be easier is to connect those two ribbon cables prior to placing the middle black piece that holds the battery. You just have to be extremely careful the entire time. Those tiny little latches that hold the ribbon cables can break easily.

Hey ExtremeRate! Thank you for posting this video! I got to work on my joy cons last night and I just wanted to give you an update on how it went. I successfully put in the new buttons on my left joy con, but just as I was about to start working on the right one the Y-shaped drill bit broke. However, I didn’t realize it was broken, and I ended up stripping three of the screws. How can I fix that? Or perhaps is there any way I can send my joy con over to you to have you look at it personally? This is a really amazing product, and I look forward to completing the uniformity of my console :)

Hello, I really need some help! I ordered my kit and I was so excited to try it out. After seconds I realized that I can’t take out half of the screws, they were so tight, I mean, what am I suppose to do now? I tried to put more pressure into the screws and I managed to get a few out, but not enough to open anything, not the back of the switch nor the joycons at all.....I stopped now, because I’m too afraid that I already broke my screws....I decided to buy a decent package of new screwdrivers to try it out next week again, but I’m so afraid that I already broke some screws and now it’s impossible to open the switch😭😭 Has anyone had the same experience? I saw that two of the foam pieces go in the console shell, but didn't see the other two used. Are they just extras?
Also, these are much higher quality than others on the market like the basstop shells. My first reshell on my Switch back in 2018 was with basstop and both the joycon and console shells sucked, they cracked so easy and didn't fit together properly. The extremerate shells feel much nicer and my daughter and I have reshelled 3 sets of joycons and her Switch with these ones and they really hold up well along with having a more premium feel and fitting together as you would expect. My only complaint was with the SNES joycons I had to order a set of lavender buttons because it came with four dark purple buttons rather than two dark purple and two light purple, but other than that it looks and feels great. She got the joycons shown in this video last year and we just finished the Dark Grey Violet joycon shell replacement and are doing her console shell now (hence how I wound up here asking about the extra foam). Really solid stuff, the material just feels great in your hands.

I think there's a small amount of padding on the original shell around the button, not dissimilar to the thin padding around the joystick. Also, as mentioned elsewhere, don't just yank the ribbon cables out! If you break the ribbon cable they're easily replaced, but break the latches on the board and you'll need a whole new one.
