    • @the_jingo
      @the_jingo 5 років тому +32

      @Benny Fair fax 1. Geralt was a mutant even among the witcher mutants since his witcher transformation during the trials of the grasses was anomalous , which prevented his complete witcher-psyche metamorphosis. Due to this he retained a selective few humane emotions and sentiments , like sexuality and worldly wisom. Hence all the love making and bed warming.
      2.That means you won't have the privilege of pussy-slaying , since you would become devoid of sexuality , and emotions in general , transformed into a heartless killing machine whose only thought processes include battle wit , survival tactics and a killing fetish.
      3. Conclusively , the "adventures" you speak of won't be much more than missions , "the travels" merely delays in accomplishing your target , danger -not much of a perk except being a red threat to your life expectancy , no women's love - explained in detail , drinking - not much of a pleasure.
      If you don't follow with any of my points or arguments , then just read the witcher books. You will know.

      I find the claim of Witchers being striped of emotion to be rumor and speculation. If you examine the training and trials to become one, it's classic PTSD. You wouldn't endure so much and end up "normal" afterwards. Then, your occupation has you confronting horrors on a regular basis. Talk to anyone whose served in a combat zone...they are never the same afterwards...the experience changes you. From what we see in books and games, Witchers do have emotion, but they've been conditioned to be ruthless killing machines, so a lot of normal compunctions that limit ordinary people have long since been repressed by conditioning and experience.

      No it's not, at all. You're sterilized, given incredibly heightened reflexes and senses, and an exceedingly long life. Even moving past never having children and being socially ostracized, having to smell everything as well as Geralt for over a century sounds like literal hell. Imagine walking into medieval London, with the Thames more human shit than water, with a witcher's nose. Now imagine that's what every experience with people you'll ever have smells like. Do you really want to be a witcher now?

    In the witcher world there are only two options. You can be a normal person who will probably be a farmer that is barely making enough money to survive and then has their entire life destroyed by a monster. Or you can go through some messed up stuff as a kid but then have superpowers, a really long life, and really good odds of ending up with a hot sorceress. Witcher sounds better to me

      People in the comment section mention monsters - but unlike in the game where Geralt is essentially playing a hack'n'slash game, if the witcher's world was realistic monster attacks would be few and far in-between. Kind of like in our world, people that do really evil shit are pretty rare though it can happen. Most of these 'common' monsters like ghouls and drowners and wraiths only really appear after a major event like a war or when someone gets brutally murdered.

      Except unless you're privileged you won't be doing any combat training. At best you'd be a foot soldier. That's only if your local Lord cares enough to pay to have you trained and outfitted. On peasant wages, you're not buying any weapons or armor. I guess you could run around with a knife or stick a knife on a stick and use it like a spear.
      Facing the reality of the Witcher world means that you will more likely than not be poor, landless, and stuck with labor related work for the entirety of your life. You don't have time to train. You've gotta work for your daily bread. You're not gonna be gaining knowledge through books because you can't read since there is no universal public schooling. There is no recourse for upward social mobility short of blind luck and sheer good will from more affluent people.
      I imagine it isn't all bad since life would be unbearable and unsustainable if there was only death and loss. However, it's probably short and possibly very brutal in the end to a good number of people.
      TL;DR Be born rich and privileged while keeping to less adventurous pursuits. Otherwise, hope that you manage to dodge 99% of the shitty things that can happen to you while you're minding your own business until you're ready to die..

      Peasants with pitchforks are little danger to a witcher. Why do you think he’s called the butcher of blaviken?
      Meanwhile, I would happily become a witcher. I already dislike people and society in general, and I like the ideas of enhanced strength and perception, along with traveling near constantly.
      I don’t think I’d pass the trials, though. And if I did, I’d probably only get killed in the most embarrassing way possible soon after.
      Anyway, given a choice, I’d try to become a witcher.

    • @dreamponiard
      @dreamponiard 6 років тому +25

      The pitchfork is a meme of the witcher franchise because Geralt was killed by a peasant with said tool.
      I disagree with some of your points Proximus. A lot of what you describe is how people see witchers but not how they really are. During the Witcher 3 we clearly see that all the witcher of the School of the Wolf are very human and love each other. They are ready to sacrifice themselves to save Ciri and Geralt. We know that they have all of their emotions, as Lambert for example displayed anger and sadness regarding his life.
      They don't have a killing fetish either (it's from the witcher 3 book, which is a xenophobic and misinformed book).
      As for sexuality, all witchers are sexually active, often with sorceresses ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

    In the books, Geralt regularly has existential crises, and even if you look at Witcher's like Lambert in the games, it's pretty clear that being a Witcher ultimately *isn't* a fun experience. The whole point of the Witcher's is that they were necessary for the safety of everyone from the monsters. The Witcher's represent self(sort of)-sacrifice for the goods of others. I mean, if you're cool with having a violent death for the good of others, okay, buuut. Heh.

    • @Kugrox
      @Kugrox 5 років тому +28

      I think what people need to ask themselves is, since 7 out of 10 people die during the process, IF they're even chosen in the first place. Then ask yourselves this, would you say it's worth it, for you and your best friend to be killed, if it meant some stranger gets to be a witcher? Because more than likely, that's what would happen. You'd fucking die, along with 6 other friends of yours, and some asshole you never met before would become a witcher. So, is that really worth it? To roll the dice and just assume you're going to be 1 of the 30%? Sure. It's possible. But the odds aren't exactly in your favor. Combine that with being a target for everyone to try and kill, especially monsters. come on bro. Having super powers is only good if its like superman who can't ever die. Witchers can die, very easily. just fall down some steps.

    Alot of people here I think don't know that in the books, the witchers can BARELY get enough coin together because there are so little monsters left in the world. I remember reading something about witchers literally having to hunt in swamps for days for a drowner and that would then give them like 2 coins, so even if you were a witcher, it'd be difficult to live, and if you were a farmer, depending on where you are, you could have a regular farmer life. Personally, I'd prefer to be a higher vampire in the witcher universe, or just live somewhere in Toussaint.

    Witchers live hundreds of years, staying strong and healthy for their whole lives. No-one actually knows if they even can die of old age because they've all been killed.
    They get superpowers in their enhanced strength, reflexes, magical skills and senses.
    They spend their lives travelling the world having amazing adventures, fighting monsters, and sleeping with succubi and sorcesses.
    Most medieval peasants, in real history and The Witcher live and die without ever leaving their tiny corner of the world, and the only mark they leave on the world is their headstone.
    So yeah, being a Witcher totaly worth it. Even with the prejudice they face and the torturous Trials to become one.

      Almost everything you describe would be something most Witchers don't do, instead something Geralt does. Gotta remember that Geralt is the major exception and not the rule. Most Witchers aren't very known and die not very known, not to mention fighting monsters from what I know isn't fun for Witchers including Geralt. Maybe somewhat fun or fun for some and maybe fun for Geralt, but that's about it. Sleeping with succubi just sounds like a bad idea if you're not Geralt and most sorceresses are for a lack of better term, jerks. Also Witchers most likely can die of old age considering Vesemir ages, unless they just can't die of old age and turn into piles of dust, but still technically alive. Also like you've said almost every Witcher ended up dead so living hundreds of years isn't really something you'll end up enjoying. Also the fact you're gonna be poor most of your time as a Witcher considering your job doesn't pay much, is extremely dangerous and needs preparations, and there's not a lot of monsters left by the time of Witcher 3 I'm pretty sure. Though even if there were a bunch, normal humans could probably deal with most monsters.
      So in my opinion being a Witcher isn't exactly worth it.

Either you live in poverty, live under the rule of a tyrant, enlist in the army, become a farmer and just hope your crops aren't attacked by hungry vagrants or creatures, ESPECIALLY noon wraiths, or randomly killed by raiders... The list goes on.

  • @AlexBermann
    @AlexBermann 6 років тому +13

    I'd say it is worth it - depending on where you live. In short, the reason is that Witchers are very long lived, immune to diseases and very capable to defend themselves. In the world of the Witcher, your chances of being drafted in a war, killed by religious and political zealots or get infected with the Catriona plague are significant. However, this mostly applies to the northern kingdoms. In Nilfgaard, you have a certain level of stability and security. Furthermore, the insaner religions (but also the sane ones) are repressed. Skellige generally doesn't seem to have such horrible religions and nobility, so we see no sign that life there is particularily bad. Beauclair also is a nice place for ordinary people.
    Of course, if you don't want to be isolated from all the suffering and injustice, but rather make a difference on some level, being a Witcher is among the best options. Other than nobles and members of the clergy, your power is truly your own. A king who doesn't take other nobles opinions and interest in mind will soon face a rebellion. Witchers exist outside of the system - but they are useful enough not to be real renegates. They actually are among the few people who can temporarily talk with royalty on an equal level.
    The price is that a Witcher doesn't have the social environment most people have. Even with Gerald who has a weirdly magnetic personality, this comes into play frequently. Companions such as Zoltan Chivay only travel with you if you happen to walk the same way. Many of Geralds companions also leave the road because they die. There also is the relationship with Yennefer which shows how incompatible Geralds way of life is with her way of life: even though they are bound by fate, they are more frequently on a breakup than together. The only stable companion Gerald has is Dandelion - because Dandelion is one of the few people who don't want to have any roots.

    @carterf3585 6 років тому +14

    No. The games are a little muddier on the subject with the exception of Lambert but the books make it very clear that the life of a Witcher is miserable, thankless and tragic. The majority of children selected for the training (roughly 8 in 10, IIRC) don't survive to pass the Trial of the Grasses, and then many of those that somehow survive still end up dying during the mutation process. And if they make it through all that, their only reward is a long, hard life of living hand to mouth and a guarantee that they'll die horribly at the other end of either a sword or some kind of spiked extremity. None of the witchers we see particularly enjoy their careers and Geralt refuses to feed Ciri's desire to become a Witcher even though she's ludicrously talented at it and holds a very romantic view of the lifestyle. Geralt has a very interesting life, but he's a decidedly extraordinary Witcher (born the son of a sorceress and tied to several powerful prophecies). And even then most of his life is wading through shit and dealing with obstinate assholes to earn a meager paycheck.
    TL;DR: Being a Witcher sucks for everyone but Geralt (And it sucks 60% of the time for him too).

    Yes, superhuman reflexes and magic in the form of Signs is cool and all that. But for me the downside of being alone most of the time, and being loathed and feared for the rest, would be really depressing. And after reading the books, monsterslaying seems really brutal and dangerous profession. Geralt is really good at it, but some witchers aren't. Every contract, every hunt might be the one where you die choking on your own blood, or survive just to live your life with crippled leg or back.

      @sir-dolphino 2 роки тому

      @@Darkstormsun9865 Yeah my mistake, my bad. Was thinking of a entirely different comment when I wrote that. So again sorry about that.
      Now about what you did actually say, monsters aren't actually that big a deal and are much rarer than the games depict. The reason there's so many in the games would be gameplay reasons, though maybe it's just a full retcon. Not to mention most of the common ones to my knowledge could be dealt with, with enough normal human soldiers and without tons of loss.
      So you most likely wouldn't have to fear monsters unlike a Witcher whose job is to hunt them, there was a Witcher in the books I think that ran away during a contract so Witchers still have fears of monsters. I think it was that striga contract Geralt lifts the curse on where the Witcher ran(In the show died)so unless you have Geralts Bravery, I don't think anyone would have an even slightly good time in any way. But there is always a chance and if it did happen you would be dead unless saved by a Witcher or a ton of guards which just wouldn't happen.
      Not to mention you'd be broke and the contracts you could get would be few and far between, combining that with the preparations needed for the job, the necessities of living, and needing to travel all over the place.
      Now you say long life as a Witcher, but from what I know most Witchers even before they got massacred didn't live that long and the ones that are alive in the books and games lived that long because (they weren't at the massacre of Kaer Morhen)there better than the average Witcher. Geralt is the best of them, Eskel is close to Geralt, Lambert. . . I don't really know about Lambert in terms of skill or much else, and Vesemir should be better than the average Witcher considering he was a fencing instructor and is quite old at that.
      Still worth it though.

    I don’t watch Anime, but the very idea of ‘Witchers’ is very Anime-esque, or, something that imagination can produce, and expand on with an interesting description of it.
    Think about the concept of them - Kids that were albeit, forced, to join, and train in a specific squadron of a larger force for the sole purpose of protecting Humanity from Monsters? Sure, it’s not what they chose, but their purpose is noble, and most of all, it’s interesting to the fan base, which in my opinion, is what really hooked me to the damn Witcher’s series.
    The man who had the idea of a ‘Witcher’ stemmed from his imagination is a legend. Who knew the amount of potential from an imaginary monster-slayer could get him so far, and to even influence people to make videos of lore explaining what his creativity created.

    Is being a Space Marine worth it? Is being a Spartan 2 worth it? Is being taken away as a child to *_MAYBE_* (sometimes as low as 0.05% "maybe") to get powers you'd never be able to use for your own and that basically set you up on certain path forever?
    Grey Wardens are slightly better as while you're f//cked royally compared to others and have no choice, they take you in the middle of your life and they take those that are already fighting Blight and don't have much hope in surviving it anyway. But that's quite a popular trope...

      sorry for stopping you from getting the likes you so crave, but don't deserve, but care to specify and provide argumentation for such an empty statement, huh?
      Witchers: taken from childhood, have superhuman abilities, work constantly to fight off ever present wild life, have no social or class standing, cat eyes.
      Grey Wardens: recruit already prominent fighters, get no ability beyond feeling Darkspawn and slight immunity to taint, are needed only during Blights, have a wide network of diplomatic agreements to secure their standing, retain their own looks.

      Grey Wardens can go fuck themselves. To be a Space Marine or a Spartan you have to be exceptional. And when you become one - that's it, you're it, you don't have some "power". The power is you.
      While Grey Wardens don't need to exist as a secretive order of privileged warriors in order for their power to be useful. Like what can they do? Sense the Blight coming? Yeah, I can see giant mutant hordes too, with my eyes. Also the dwarves can just tell you about darkspawn leaving for the surface. What else? Killing Archdemons for good? Well ok, so you just need one guy to be near an Archdemon to absorb it's soul. Just let any guy (a criminal or a volunteer) drink from the goblet during the Blight and kill the demon. Not like Wardens have any abilities, no super-speed, strength, etc. But no, Grey Wardens keep every bit of information secret, because they want power and fame. Seriously, fuck'em. And as a human non-mage character in DAO : fuck Duncan

    • @TheArklyte
      @TheArklyte 6 років тому +3

      Steel Bear
      funny thing is that Wardens are the only ones, who treat the threat of Blight seriously. And why do they keep their info secret? Thanks to people like Duncan. Imperial Inquisition is also using criminals if their abilities are exceptional enough. And can you pinpoint with GPS like precision in which direction Darkspawn are when you can't see them? Besides you've ignored the main point that the games never let arise since it was cut from game mechanics during DA:O developement - they're the only ones immune to Blight. Have you ever played Vermintide? Wonder how your heroes are constantly bombarded by Nurgle followers and Skaven globadiers, but never catch any sickness that'll melt their skin off in minutes? That's game mechanics having mercy on your poor ass. GW's are immune to the Thedas's equivalent, to the Blight. Plus if you've played DA:O, you should know that it doesn't end there...

    9:18 - My opinion only - but in the 3-4 yrs immersed in this universe on social media, playing the games, reading the books, watching Netflix show, I've not come across a discussion of this subject. I'm not on Reddit so could've missed it there.
    The Monstrum book largely contained misinformation and downright untruths about witchers (such as witchers having no emotions) but the implication that a witcher experiences.... well, arousal for inflicting pain and suffering is a very interesting topic - and although, it's likely this statement is grossly exaggerated by the author of The Monstrum, I thought a lot about it. So my theory is if a witcher consumes potions and decoctions to amp himself up for a big battle against against a tough foe, the side effects of those potions combined with the adrenaline rush of fighting for survival could make that arousal occur... and then add the thrill of victory if said witcher emerges as the victor.... you get my point. Then the author of The Monstrum is largely correct on the physical interpretation, however, grossly misinterprets the reasons behind the effect. The cause is more of a biological/scientific one of the body under influences of foreign substances and overdose of adrenaline and hormones rather than a lack of human decency and morals. This author turns it into something that should breed disgust in normal people and thus adds fuel to the fire that witchers are "contrary to nature and immoral and filthy degenerates."
    Since we know witchers DO have emotions and they are just very skilled in disguising them when it suits their purpose, this is another one of those misconceptions and one I find very interesting. :)
