Ever since I was little, one of my favorite things about baseball has been the hijinks players get up to in the dugout. While highlight-reel catches and moonshot home runs are definitely exciting, there's just something about watching a player who is completely oblivious to the giant wad of bubble gum stuck to the top of his hat.
In this video, I tell you about the most (in)famous baseball prankster of them all. His victims included fans, Hall of Famers, and even the Commissioner of Baseball himself!

Great Howard Johnson story. Was at a game in 1989 where my buddy caught a Ho Jo home run. HoJo was his favorite player and he really wanted to get it signed so we waited outside of the player's parking lot for well over an hour to see if Johnson would sign it. My mate bothered EVERYBODY from the Mets parking lot security guards to players wife's and family who were driving out.
Anyway, finally Johnson drives out and he must have heard about my buddy because he drove his Jeep directly towards where we were standing, got out of his vehicle and said "are you the guy?" So my buddy goes over to him and graciously asks him to sign the ball and that it is the most valuable thing in the world to him. Johnson says "oh yeah? Let me go get a pen from my car and sign it for you then." Goes into his car, rolls down the window and says "later sucker!" and drove off.
My buddy was like "he's just going to get a pen" then waited and waited for HoJo to return....for like 20 minutes. Then he began asking me "he's just getting a pen, right?" I had no idea but it didnt seem like HoJo was coming back and my buddy was heartbroken.
So we had to walk all the way to the other side of Shea to his car and he was pissed off because HoJo was his favorite player. The lot was almost empty by this time and we got into the car and began to deive off.
Then at the exit of the parking lot sat HoJo's Jeep. He was laughing hysterically as he not only handed my buddy the signed baseball but gave him the bat he hit the HR with "for being such a good sport." HoJo had just pranked his biggest fan and I was there to witness it.
That’s hysterical! It’s always fun to hear stories about players pulling good-natured practical jokes on fans like that.

As a coach, Moe took great pride in teaching the next generation how to have fun at the ballpark by keeping his traditions alive. RIP Moe.
My favorite part of baseball is it is a thinking persons game. You can play left field and all game long the ball never gets hit to you yet you are ready every single pitch. You cannot slack just in case it is hit to you. You must maintain mental acuity through the "boredom" I love that for some reason.
Ysh the fact that you don't don't have to be in even decent shape to be an excellent baseball players is amazing. It's like golf.😂
... then you have me... the kid who'd wear his glove as a hat, stick out both arms, and spin like a propeller. Yet, baseball still helped me learn better focus techniques than I'd otherwise have.

Another legendary baseball prankster, Jay Johnstone, met Drabowski for the first time at a cocktail lounge and Moe had a drink is his right hand. When he heard Johnstone's name as they were introduced by a mutual acquaintance he casually dropped the glass onto the floor, shattering it completely while extending the now empty hand to shake Jay's hand. Johnstone says that Moe's eyes stayed open as if nothing had happened and he immediately knew Moe was 'his kind of guy'.
I love your description of baseball as being "what other sport has most of the team confined to a room off to the side for half the game?" That was brilliant and something I had never thought of before.

I had no idea Moe Drabowsky was such a prankster as I only remember him as a very good Orioles relief pitcher. His snake pranks would have shook me up so much! Bob Uecker was a good prankster. As a back-up catcher on the 1964 Cardinals team about to take on the Yankees in the first game of the world series he thought the team appeared to be tense. During pre-game batting practice he took a tuba from a nearby tuba player and went out to the outfield to see if he could catch flies in the tuba which he actually did on occasion in order to lighten up the mood. The tuba was badly dent and he was fined and had to pay damages but the Cardinals were no longer tense from laughing so hard and beat the Yankees that day.
Almost forgot Drabowsky also did good pitching some for the Cardinals as well.

Another Hall-of-Fame prankster was the late Richard "Turk" Farrell, who pitched in the 1950s and '60s for Philadelphia, the Dodgers and Houston mostly. His best work was probably with the expansion Colt .45s where, like Moe, he had a fascination for snakes, including rattlesnakes. He once hid a baby alligator in the clubhouse whirlpool. He once threw a spitball to Stan Musial who lashed it for a double. The next day, in a pregame radio interview, Turk confessed to throwing the spitter and marveled that Musial was so good he could still get a hit off it. The baseball brass was not amused and fined him for it. It was not uncommon back in those days for players to perform in odd pre-game contests. One popular promotion was the "cow-milking contest" where teams would send out one or two players each to milk bovines in foul grounds, trying to fill a pail with milk in the shortest time. One opponent had devised a scheme where he would keep a hot water bottle full of milk under his armpit and would pretend to milk the cow while, all the while, letting his milk device drip down his arm through a hidden rubber hose. When the player tried this against Houston, the player thought he had won and raised his arms in victory when they told him to look in his pail. Farrell had replaced his milk with chocolate milk, thus ending the ruse.

Why are these videos so damn good
Interesting because Mo's early life was the opposite of lighthearted. His Polish-American father had moved back to Poland, married a woman and the two had Mo just before the nazi invasion of '39. With his U.S. citizenship, Mo's father able to leave, but had to struggle around the clock to arrange for an escape for his wife and infant son. They barely made it out alive. Maybe such a terrifying beginning leads a person to live a life of pranking.

If he's the prince, Greg Maddux is the king. I don't think that people know what an absolute troll he was. He looks so nice, but he's epic level troll. I worked for the Giants in 99 as a visiting clubhouse assistant on game days and the Braves were my favorite team to come in. Maddux was one of the reasons.

Yooooooooo HOJO is my favorite player of all time. He was a switch hitting 3B/SS with power and speed. Very underrated player of his time.

Here's another funny Bob Uecker story to add to the one below I want to share after just re-reading my favorite baseball book October 1964 by David Halberstram for something like the 5th time. In June 1964 the Cardinals were off to a very slow start after a good 1963 second place finsish so they traded their ace pitcher Ernie Broglio for a very average outfielder named Lou Brock frrom the Cubs. After Brock first arrived Cards manager Johnny Keane called a team meeting as he was very upset about their start to the season but was glad to have the fast running Lou Brock hoping his speed would shake up some offense. Johnny Keane in a very serious tone announced to the team there were going to be some big changes coming since they were now going to steal bases. Bob Uecker then stood up and annouced to the team that they need not worry because he had it covered. Uecker said it wasn't going to be easy for him but he could steal those bases.

I golf with a guy that grew up next door to Moe Drabowsky on Skitchewuag street in Wilson Ct.(Windsor) Tony is his name. He has some childhood stories abot Moe and and all the crazy stuff they did when when they were kids. I just cant tell then here because it was too crazy. (Nobody got hurt). I also have another friend, whose dad(Larson) caught him in Windsor as a teen and the Dodgers signed him, but came home soon after spring training(racism down south) in the fifties. Moe woulld invite Tony down to the fantasy camps back in the 90's. He got to meet all the Orioles from the 60's and 70's and said Paul Blair was a good sport with all the snakes stuff.
Ha ha! I hope the snakes were not harmed in the committing of these pranks.

Baseball is a fun and wonderful game. It’s supposed to be played with a smile. It’s one of the hardest professional sports played and these people are still human. Let them have fun. Who cares about bat flips or watching a home run. Go shout at yourself on the mound. It’s an intense game. Why try to speed up the best game ever? Ernie Banks wanted to play two. Let’s play more.
For me, this is one of the things I hate most about baseball. As a 52 year old, it's hard to feel passionate about a team or teams whose players act like a bunch of college dorm a holes. And not to be that "back in my day" guy, but...back in my day, players actually acted like men. Crazy, huh?
Imagine if Bill Belichick pulled these "pranks" on the opposing team, people would be blasting him, calling him a cheater and demanding asterisks be placed in the records books. Yet people call this guy a genius prankster. Funny how hypocrisy works.
