There are three constants in life: death, taxes, and monster home runs at Coors Field. Because of this, the eternal question for the Colorado Rockies (or at least since 1993) has been figuring out how to balance the offensive benefits of the Coors Effect with the pain it causes their pitchers.
Enter Ubaldo Jimenez. In 2010, Jimenez had not just the best season for a pitcher in Rockies history, but one of the best seasons of the last 20 years.
In this video, I'll be breaking down Ubaldo Jimenez's life in baseball, from his humble beginnings in the Dominican Republic to his rollercoaster MLB career.

As an orioles fan, that opening clip reopened one of many wounds
My apologies for the pain that flashback may have caused you, though to be fair it comes with the territory for O’s fans.
You're absolutely right. Hey if you take requests from super sad O's fans, could you do something on how good the early 90s orioles were to have never gotten to the was? Or even something involving Chris Hoiles being a super underrated batting catcher? (He hit 2 grand slams in one game just saying lol)
@@thorinhanson1181 I’d love to do something on the Orioles, so definitely keep an eye out for an O’s vid in the future 👀
@@BaseballHistorian ima orioles fan to and if you wanted you could make a vid about how superstars always get traded away or leave the orioles
At least your team has won a World Series title (3, to be exact)
As a rockies fan he's still my all time favorite pitcher. He's the greatest pitcher in franchise history and I will remember him as such
Pretty sad when your franchise's greatest pitcher was 56-45 with a 3.66 ERA, 8.3 K9, and 1.28 WHIP

Wonderfully done
Wow didn’t expect to see you here. I guess everyone likes Great videos!
The editing on this video is absolutely phenomenal. Keep grinding... you have a ton of potential.
Thank you!
Definitely. Just found this channel and I’m hooked!
Living in Denver this story still amazed me. We have had very few all star picthers here
Armando Reynoso in 93 did well,2004 their starters were good, but the starters except for Helton were either too young or on their way out!
Man, just gonna say, that ad was a clever, fun idea. Always gets a chuckle out of me.
Look up some more of them on YT; the Rockies ads are usually great.
@@brandonsheumaker2673 Wish they'd make more of them. The Rox commercials are classics! I think my favorite is the one where Jason Giambi starts talking like Yoda. :D But then again, anything with Charlie Blackmon in it is going to be hysterical.
Mariners fan here, always had an admiration for Ubaldo and remember how dominant he was, Great work on the video 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
“League leading 95mph fastball”
Then he came over to my O's and couldn't handle Camden Yards. Make it make sense.
2016 wild card flashbacks
Foolish baseball said something about why pitchers like him do well in Coors but not elsewhere. I think it was high velo low spinrate
AL East………. That’s all you need to know.
@@phxnigtmare yeah, sunkerballers really thrive in coors because they don't really rely on spinrate which is affected by coors.
Part of it is Camden yards is easier to homer in than coors, believe it or not. Alot of mistake pitches that would end up in gloves in coors big outfield, or at worst as extra base hits, became home runs.
Me siento agradecido de poder verlo lanzar con la playera de los Rockies
And one is left wondering, will there ever be someone that could come to Coors and get on his level?
Maybe, but they will never be Ubaldo.
German Marquez has been really good
@@tylerzuniga6316 not nearly as good at his peak and sadly super up and down. Marquez DID win a silver slugger. One of a couple to win so at Coors
Hideo Nomo was a level above it at Coors. But he wasn't a Rocky lol.
Hampton was almost the first in 2001, but then he suddenly dies in the second half.
I just wanted to tell you that in the time that it took me to watch the video you gained 8 subscribers! I’m very happy that you’re getting the subscribers you deserve for these amazing videos!
You’ve got to LOVE a guy who gets there and goes all out for more and as stated by his Rockies manager, Ubaldo went all out for the MOST. Utterly dazzling was his stuff in his prime and, whilst I grew up (born in ‘81 in New England) seeing pitching perfected not once with the perfect fastball from young Roger Clemens but, the greatest masterpiece of the craft that remains and perhaps will forever, that being 1999, 1999 postseason, and 2000 Pedro Martinez, who at that time was so finely honing the edge of pitching that we thought that in early 2000 and if not 2000, certainly before 2004, he might win 30 games. Which he totally would’ve if 1999 or 2000 had the 2003 offense which was an offense that toppled and obliterated statistically the 1927 Murderers Row of baseball slaughterers. The damned ghosts did get the pioneer Cowboy Up RedSox in the bottom of the 10th or 11th damn. Forgive me. With and another killer “B” being the bummah we got year in and year out until…. Well…. The last 20 years have just been silly and spoiled an entire generation up here and, we despise them as much as the rest of you but, pity them that they not suffered so bad to get there.
I digress…. Jimenez had the best change up since Pedro and if I’m honest, one that outshined the Great Pedro in how it did pop and lock out and away from the baffled fastball expecting knockkneed hitters.
Hats off Ubaldo. You were the man. You were the man in the Show. The game and it’s absolute adoring fans will not forget your incredible moment of dominance and some see that you went all out and wanted to be the best instead of hang around and never know if you could’ve been Him. Cheers, Thank You and God Bless.
Holy shinto this is an incredibly well-made vid. So glad to find gems like this channel that are destined to blow up. Great stuff.
Thanks, glad you like it!
It's amazing how one video can turn some I've never heard of to someone I have the upmost respect for.
From Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 thank you great content 💪🏽
"I don't know what Ubaldo Jimenez is doing these days, but I hope he's doing well"!
So do I, and this is coming from a Tigers' fan!!
This is exactly what I needed today! I enjoyed it!
Cant believe this doesn’t have more views. Great work, loved this video!
I thought it was stupid they got rid of him. You're most likely not going to get pitchers who have below 4.00 ERA's So when you do, you should hold on to them if they are keeping you in the game. Work more on an elite bullpen to finish it.
great video and great thumbnail! you make some of the best baseball thumbnails I have ever seen
Fantastic content man! You will blow up in no time
Remember when teams that won less than 90 games made it into the playoffs?
As a Blue Jays fan, I always relished our showdowns with Jimenez when he was on the Orioles. It seemed that every time he pitched against us, we beat the O's
As in orioles fan, I can tell you it wasn’t only you guys. Everytime he was on the mound, we needed 10 runs to even be in the game
I honestly think this dude stunk so bad it rubbed off on others around him. Like Kevin Gausman's splitter looked like dogwater when Ubaldo was on the team. I literally watched those two in back to back games throw the same pitch to Mookie Betts for homers.
Incredible video man, I’d love to see them more often
Glad to hear it! About to get to work on the next one, so hold tight.
"Slugger" and Jason Heyward are the last things I expected to hear today
This guy was my idol!! He was outstanding. Definitely someone I modeled myself after.
Just found your channel, really enjoy the way you present material
the man is back
As a Braves fan, that no-hitter he threw against us made him earn my respect
not even a huge MLB fan but i remember this guy( sf fan) and never seen a video just about him. ty for interesting content.
This channel is gonna blow up
Ubaldo was one of my favorite players before I dropped off of baseball and now I'm getting back into it. Good vid.
I remember him dominating the orioles when he was with cleveland. After we got him in baltimore, the coaches simplified his windup some but it never really helped.
Unreal content!
Ubaldo was by far and away my favorite Pitcher during his time here in Colorado. Personally I think the atmospheric effect here is overblown by the media, and that gets into a pitcher’s head causing more problems than the thin air actually does.
Great channel, im hooked!
this was a great video. from one Rockies fan
I always thought there was some correlation between Ubaldo’s delivery change and decline. He started this very obvious defensive flinch when he released the ball. If you watch earlier video when he was dominant he didn’t do it nearly as much. Could be just a coincidence but I remember bringing that up in real time while watching him play.
That's an interesting theory, I hadn't picked up on that!
Awesome dude!!
I can say I’m here before 100 subs for when this channel blows up
And I can say that I was here before 255 subs
Awesome job!!!
Great video man
I was excited for him last year. Just another casualty of the pandemic
I love the opening clip! Watched it live
great vid, subscribed!
I love how every title card is different for every episode. I remember when me and my brother used to try to go to every ubaldos starts here in Colorado during the season he was almost undefeated. Good times. I think he was like 11-2 up to the all star game. RIP brother.
I remember being at that game where Holliday brought us to the playoffs. My brother got us tickets for my bday which was two days before.
Fun fact: Roy Halladay is from Colorado and he actual pitched against my other brother in high school and struck him out in 3 pitches lol. If anyone was gonna get cy young that year over ubaldo I'm glad it was Roy.
Ubaldo will always be my favorite Rockies pitcher! Created so many great memories for us Rockies Fans.
Terrific video!
Love Ubaldo. Will be impersonating his windup till i can't throw a ball no more.
Ubaldo de Lo Mio 💪🏻🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴

In that playoff game, I remember thinking that the game was over, when Showalter brought him in.
How are you not going to mention hall-of-famer Chipper Jones when you talk about the Braves' lineup?
That wild card game vs San Diego was crazy!!!
It seems like you got a new mic it’s really good!
Yes I did, pretty good investment if I do say so myself
@@BaseballHistorian it sure is it helps the videos a ton and you’re getting subscribers from it🎉
In 07 the Phils had 2 mvps in Rollins and Howard, and another perpetual mvp candidate in Chase Utley. It was the first year the Phil’s made the playoffs since 93. So a battle of the 2 teams that hadn’t been in the playoffs in over a decade. Rockies swept the Phils that year, but the following year, 08, was redemption. Phils win WS (vs TB Rays) and Rockies miss playoffs. As a Phillies fan I was so bitter in 07 towards the Rockies but we’re cool now 😎
That commercial in the beginning was pretty funny
“His league leading 95 mph fastball”. Always forget how much baseball has changed in a short time
david fletcher smile!?!?!?
glad to see i'm not the only one searching this
We all can use a little more David Fletcher in our lives ;)
Great video new subscriber
I always knew we were in trouble when facing Ubaldo - Giants fan
As someone from Baltimore, Jimenez was the butt of every joke for this year. He was so bad that the tame Baltimore fans were making fun of him.
It’s a shame, because he was an absolute monster with Colorado
You mean he was called box of choc.
U have all the dudes i forgot about in my adolescence lol
I think Ubaldo should have won that Cy young award because of coors. Like hitters get penalized for playing in coors but pitchers can’t get rewarded for pitching great there? Exactly
This was the last time I recall the Rockies having a god tier pitcher. Maybe the Rockies will find another great pitcher or two? God knows we need it.
I think German Marquez is looking like a really promising young ace, but there’s also a decent chance they end up trading him away soon, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@BaseballHistorian true. German Marquez is pretty good. Don't will that trade into the universe please.
a few years ago,Tyler Anderson, not an All-Star,they had some good starters a few years ago.
He was so great everywhere then he went to Baltimore. I can still remember watching the games where he was BP. And the taste of the playoffs is still rotten with him in my mind. His small sample size of great tricked Baltimore
he sucked in cleveland
It’s sad COVID forced him into retirement he deserved a good comeback year
I remembered he had a sick fastball
And then he accepted a massive contract and was never heard of again.
Really dumb of Baltimore to pay him, he stunk 2 of his 3 years in Cleveland
awesome
As a big Os fan im a huge fan of Jimenez he was a dude in the bigs. Buck kinda made him wear it in that game
Right, it really wasn’t entirely his fault, but it’s become such a big part of his otherwise stellar legacy.
Did you call it the Cleveland Baseball team?
I mean would it be bad if they didnt just change it to "The Tribe" it's all crap anyways AFAIC. People winge too much over sports team branding now...
I was just thinking about Jimenez
If you want to do a video of a tragic story about a pitcher that could have been great but unfortunately died in a car accident, I suggest a video on Yordano Ventura of the Kansas City Royals. A pitcher that would have given the royals a chance at 3 straight post seasons if he were still with us. He had some cocky moments no doubt but backed it up in big spots.
how about Nick Adenhart,Angels, both died way too young!!!
Ubaldo Jiminez: or why you don't fuck with windups that are complex and precise.
Rip the king Roy
He said I'm gonna head out after that first half of 2010
More early and middle year stats pls big bruv
Baseball is a beautiful but painfully tragic game
I had him on my fantasy team that year. And his no hitter somehow scored less than someone else who threw a complete game against me..this was Yahoos where you set your rotation for the week and not every day. I lost by 2 points. I thought the No Hitter won me the week for sure.
I faced the same guy in the "world series" and got rocked as most of my guys either were spent or resting.
Jiminez actually finished third in cy young voting behind Wainwright as well
i very much appreciate the work that went into this video, but i watched this decline happen in real time, and there are a couple of key items missed / glossed over:
1. his 15-1 first half compared to his second half
2. his velo dropped dramatically at that exact point
3. he suffered from back injuries at that exact point
4. his mechanics changed after that
he was the only starter i’d have ever seen regularly hitting 99mph.
Wow I miss Colorado Dexter Fowler
“Its a Rocky Mountain high and a no hitter!”
Thanks but you should've included more detail about 2016. It wasn't just that Sept 5 CG @ Tampa (which I attended). He was actually very good over his last 7 appearances, including a 9/29 showing in Toronto--6 2/3 IP, 1 H, 3BB, 5k. The Jays had just put in Liriano who would likely have held the O's down several innings. Britton wasn't going to match that. Buck knew what he was doing although when a move backfires, the trolls have easy prey.
Heyward, McCann an Prado is who you mention in 08 Braves smh 🤦♂️. Chipper won batting title an was almost always the best hitter thru his career man.
Ubaldo was one of the main reasons Baltimore even made the playoffs. That game in Tampa was a CG 2-hit performance. I believe he didn't walk anybody either.
Bad on Buck for not owning up to his screwup. Ubaldo shouldn't have been in over Zack Britton, the best pitcher in the game that year.
Bernie is a gamer.
Man I wish my Orioles were just a little competitive… I miss Zack Britton
13:14 1312, nice
R.I.P. Roy Halladay
The Colorado Rockies were never a team franchise which developed and maintained talent;Ubaldo Jimenez was just one example. As a starter franchise, they gave up on Ellis Burks,Later,Matthew Holliday,Troy Tulowitzki...if not mistaken, didn't Dexter Fowler become a member of the championship Chicago Cubs? It is very unfortunate that MLB,in today's standards(2021),DO NOT maintain players as the notable, like in the 1970's...for example, when I think of Pete Rose,I associate him with the Cincinnati Reds.Steve Garvey, the L.A.Dodgers. The last MLB player which was associated with a team,in current era,was Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees, unfortunately. I acknowledge all this to suggest that 'commitment'is lacking in today's game by owners and players...and there was no 'commitment' by the Colorado Rockies to develop great talent such as Ubaldo Jimenez.
Chipper Jones
Ha splitter grip
Pitch never mentioned as part of repertoire
saw ubaldo's first major league start vs the dodgers back in 200land. pretty neat
Coors field has nothing to do with pitchers longevity, The reason it might appear that way is the Rockies rarely keep a good pitcher for long, As soon as they get a good pitcher they trade him before he can reach free agency. That's the main reason they've never had a pitcher pitch 1,400 innings. Now Coors field does have make a difference on their stats for half of their starts.
As an Orioles fan I thought this video was going to be about the Rockies so that first clip hurt
My sincerest apologies for any ptsd that clip may have caused
@@BaseballHistorian appreciate that 🙏🏿😔
Uhhh he faced a lineup featuring Chipper Jones too
Would do anything for the Rockies to win that ws
they were so overmatched, but had Cook,Francis stayed healthy they would have been good for years, that was a heckuva run to get to the playoffs, man what an incredible run!!!
the colorado rockies were stopped from having their first cy young pitcher by a colorado native
