  • We hope you enjoy"The Black Diamond - Ghosts of The Lehigh Valley".
The Black Diamond was filmed in 35mm Full Frame DCI at 60FPS with a Sony FS6 and a Sony AX6 in 35mm Full Frame at 30 FPS, showcasing the unparalleled beauty of the former Lehigh Valley mainline as Reading & Northern #2102 headed a sold out Founders Day excursion to Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania which followed a portion of the former Lehigh Valley mainline, where the Lehigh Valley operated its premiere passenger train, The Black Diamond.
The Black Diamond, or the Black Diamond Express, was the premier passenger train of the Lehigh Valley Railroad, and operated from New York to Buffalo from 1896 until 1959, when the Lehigh Valley's passenger service was reduced to four trains.
The train was named for the railroad's major commodity, anthracite coal, which was known as "the black diamond" because of its hardness and high value. As a result, the railroad was known as "The Route of the Black Diamond".
Prior to the discontinuance of the Black Diamond, the Lehigh operated a counterpart night train from New York City to Buffalo, The Star. Between Sayre, and Geneva, both the Black Diamond and the Star followed a secondary line, serving Ithaca and other cities, towns, and villages in central New York.
The train had a section originating in Philadelphia, in conjunction with the Reading Company, at the company's Reading Terminal. The section would rejoin the main section of the Black Diamond in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The Lehigh Valley Railroad discontinued passenger service on February 4th, 1961.
We hope you enjoyed the brief history lesson and we hope you enjoy the program.
