I whittled a top water "plug" out of a tree branch...my bro bet me I couldn't catch a fish with a bait I made myself. First cast...a seagull swooped down and grabbed it (didn't get hooked though), dropped it...one twitch and a 4.5lb bass nailed it! Then I made another lure out of one of my little bros old GI Joe figures...caught some more bass. My biggest fish (23lb pike) was caught on a 10" strip of inner tube. Very nice work BTW!
It was just a strip, cut from an old inner tube...shaped roughly like a leach. I rigged and fished it like you would a rubber worm(without a weight, just a steel leader). That pike was the only fish I caught with it. I saw numerous others (lg & sml mouth bass, and other pike) follow it, but only the one took it.
I love fishermen stories. They are always so laughably unrealistic. But to be fair, I have caught bass on willow leaves on a simple hook and sinker when they wouldn't hit anything else.
Here's a little fish story for ya, Pat. My older bro...not really a fisherman...was home, on leave, for a week. "Do you think it's possible, for me to catch 50 bass while I'm here"? he asked. I said, "for you?...no!...but there is a way I can make that happen for you!...give me an hour". I went back to my house (I'm just a block back from my parents and the lake). I used the old netting from around a trampoline (I had it stashed in the garage) and made a minnow seine. It was early summer and there were plenty of hatchlings swimming around. 3 passes with the seine, we had over 100 largemouth bass, along with a few smallmouth, bluegill, rock bass and various minnows. He was less than thrilled with his 50+ bass.
