Discogs Disappointments & I Overpaid For This Box Set Big Time!

  • In this video, I show and discuss Discogs record prices I am extremely disappointed with. Some of these records were in print and affordable just a few years back but are now outrageously expensive. I also show a box set that I spent way too much money on but the good news is that you can buy it for a bargain. I show and discuss records and box sets from bands/artists such as Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks, Kelly Clarkson, Freddie Hubbard and more.

Hi there, Melinda. Great video as always:) I believe that Garth is the best-selling solo artist in the US, but when you take the whole world into consideration, I am pretty sure that Michael Jackson or Elvis Presley are still ahead of him:) Because contrary to Garth, they also have sold a lot of records outside the US:) Anyway, take care and keep up with the wonderful videos !

At this point, discogs has done as much harm to the vinyl community as it has done good. It's a good resources for learning about certain pressings and cataloging your own collection; but the prices on the marketplace are bogus. They are volatile and based on arbitrary inflation and opportunistic greed. The ppl defending the prices with lame platitudes of "supply vs demanad" are misguided. Now, ppl are looking at their collections as a hedge fund portfolio instead of as just a collection. These ppl will be sorely disappointed. I think the market on a lot the over hyped stuff that sells for a ton will fall out hard in due time. I find it hard to believe that EVERY record under the sun is automatically worth 50-100%% more than MSRP the second it sells out or is out of print. Discogs is basically in incubator of greedy ppl taking advantage of impulsive ppl with fomo. If you can see through the BS and are patient, you will be rewarded. The vinyl market will crash 2008 style when the rest of economy tanks in the next couple years. Collectable markets bottom out during recessions. The discgs marketplace is just a a giant speculation bubble. It's disgusting that a bunch of greedy adults are hoarding Taylor Swift records and pricing out her young fanbase just cuz they can. Sadly, greed has ruined this hobbie for many people.

The MARKET PLACE is a market place.
Discogs essentially provides which edition you might have, and claiming to own one and therefore selling at that price point, opens the vendor to internet fraud.
I got a Half-speed master, when it was supposed to be a DBX copy. (The vendor worked with me, and comped me a copy of Supertramp's Even in the quietest Moments. We called it even.)😊

I read in the Economist magazine that Taylor Swift - and her team-were somewhat responsible for the Ticketmaster problem. They claimed she was greedy- she tried to sell the most tickets at one time than anyone before her. The system was overwhelmed. Melinda, another great video. I visited four record stores in the KC area this last week, I walked out not buying anything in any of them. I mostly have everything I want, and I find myself not wanting to pay the price for the items I don’t have. And yes, I’ve bought some cd’s for a fraction of the cost of the vinyl. The up’s and downs of record prices. The inability to afford some records. The inability to find some records. The anticipation of a repress. The eventual repress and affordability. The digging and the finding. All of these things are paramount to record collecting. All of your remarks in this video hold 100% absolute truth and are spot on! I have been purchasing and collecting vinyl since 5th grade, and am still doing so today as a retired individual. Like yourself, I’ve had many disappointments and overpaid many times over the years. When you have such a love for music, and are a collector besides, the addiction sometimes brings on such a desire that you go ahead and pay the price. This past year or so, vinyl prices have skyrocketed, with most selling at $30 or more for single Lp reissues. Hi, Melinda, it's disappointing that the price of records have raised exorbitantly. I never even thought that the price of records would be so expensive. It has gotten to the point, that there are records that are not available to collectors. The one thing that has crossed my mind, is that with the exorbitant prices of records and limited availability of records, is this--are we record collectors being discouraged from buying and listening to records? Ok, I may be wrong with that line of thinking, but it has crossed my mind. As for Billy Joel's Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2, I have the original pressing of that record, and yes, it's a very clean copy. The price of records, do indeed, need to come down big-time, so that way, everyone in the vinyl community can buy records. When Hills Deparment store was open, that was the store, where I bought my records. The price for records, was very reasonable and Hills had a great selection of records. I also used to buy my records, at National Record Mart. We need to get back to the reasonable prices of records that you had back at that time. With the exorbitant prices of records, people are not buying records as we have been, it makes me wonder, how are indie record stores able to stay open for business. Record prices need to come down big-time, plain and simple. Take care, Alan

Melinda, the main take away from all of this is very simple: Cost and Worth are two very different things. What is something worth to you personally? If someone really truly wants something and perhaps it might be their only shot, they're going to pay for it. The price might be high but it's more worth it for the buyer to have that record in their collection then the money they spent on that record in their pocket.

Once again, I think you speak for a large number of us in the vinyl community. The resurgence in vinyl over the past few years has been fueled by unusually high levels of disposable income and people spending an unusually high amount of time at home. As people begin resuming their previous routines that spending will be spread over other activities, particularly if prices continue to escalate as they have. This cycle has already begun if you ask me. Have you noticed how many sale emails we are receiving from vendors who not that long ago were back ordered? Vinyl is bought by music lovers, audiophiles and collectors. As in any hobby there are those who look to unfairly profit by taking advantage of collector's passions. CDs are making a comeback and affordability is a big driver of that. Love your videos. Stay well

    Hey Melinda!
Great video as usual! My thoughts on this, yes, records have become really expensive and prices on Discogs are pretty crazy. I also have an issue with the scams that have seemed to pop up lately on Discogs. People seem to be allowed to advertise albums they don't have or that don't exist for sale at really cheap prices. This is a huge red flag but people new to collecting may not know this and get ripped off. Another reason I've backed off of buying albums is that many record stores do not want to be fair when it comes to someone selling vinyl to them. They offer maybe half, or less, of the lowest price on Discogs to purchase albums then sell them for the medium to high price on Discogs. I understand that they need to make money but the way vinyl is selling now a lot of shops could afford to do better when purchasing albums from collectors or when pricing albums to sell. These factors have definitely driven my decision to stop buying records as much as I used to. I've often thought about opening my own shop and practicing what I preach! Maybe someday in the near future. Thank you so much for what you do! You are a great asset to the vinyl community!!

Thank you for the kind words. It would be interesting to know what the percentage of mark up is on the records we buy. Perhaps the people bringing the records in are demanding more money from the stores. That would definitely explain the price hikes. Thank you and take care.

I feel fortunate that I’ve been collecting for as many years as I have. Otherwise, I’d NEVER be able to afford the records I’ve got now. They just go for too much on the secondary market.
Like you, I pretty much feel like I’ve got most of the records I really want, but it took years to track some of em down. It really is unfortunate and discouraging that people who are new to the hobby (obsession…lol) aren’t able to pick up the records they’ve looking for, but then again, the hunt is a huge part of the fun. Melinda, another energizing video. I always love your sincerity and dedication to staying as positive as possible. The world needs that. Question: Does Discogs offer the ability to see what items have sold for or what actual selling prices are trending at rather than asking prices? eBay gives potential buyers/sellers that opportunity. Whether buyers or sellers actually look at it though is another question. I feel bad for newbies getting ripped off, but that’s why we need to continue to educate them. If Discogs does allow access to genuine sales prices realized, please try to mention it in a future video. Have a nice weekend and a great everything! -Glen

Dirtiest record I’ve ever gotten, lol and it inspired me to buy my record cleaning machine. Fortunately after cleaning it my B. Joel records are definitely Mint and sound absolutely Fantastic! As you said the price of records has slowed many people from purchasing like we used to and I feel this could be detrimental on the vinyl sales leading to its down fall again. There are so many records all of us wish we would have bought when they were 5-10x cheaper than the going rate. It sucks, but that’s life and the open market. There are only 6 copies for sale in the whole world including eBay on that Bob Dylan boxset. Supply and demand. I do agree they should repress it. But just like the Beatles boxset, that was up for sale for a loooong time(for too cheap really)up until a couple years ago. Beatles box was $350 I believe back then and now goes for $1000 minimum. The Dylan 13 year old “out of print” boxset at $400 for 10LPs is not that crazy to see. Supply and demand. They should repress both really. Too many people want them ;-). I have a few trusted sellers on Discogs that I frequent but the majority of prices are literally insane, same with my local record shops. I've been fortunate enough to find some phenomenal albums at my local thrift shops and flea markets, finding NM and VG + deals for anywhere from $1 to $10 (including a barely played original All Things Must Pass for $5) There's the occasional VG I'll buy for a buck and chance cleaning it thoroughly just to have a particular pressing. I get the occasional beater that can't be saved but it's worth the risk.

The Dylan box still seems to pop up on eBay for reasonable prices sometimes. I managed to get mine for $260 plus tax and $10 shipping last summer, which I think was fair. Retail price now would be $270 according to the usual online stores. $120 was a crazy good deal!

I completed ✔️ my Barry White collection at a local record store..and I paid no more than $3.00 for each of the records I wanted. Because I wasn’t old enough to buy the original copies back in the 1970’s. But, this was probably 10 years ago. I’m sure Discogs is changing super crazy prices for them now. I still missing one.

  • @ericelliott227
    @ericelliott227 Рік тому

Yes, I noticed it on Discogs as well. I use Discogs strictly as a gauge (and then vale the record at a more true value in my own mind. Basically, I stand fast on my records being no more than what I paid for them at first regardless of cleaning and restoration, That's just me though. As you know I place no monetary value on records). I looked up a few records I already have making sure to narrow down to the matrix code, condition, etc. to get the exact copy or as close as possible. Most of the records I looked up were selling for what I paid for them. But a couple in terrible condition that I paid $1 are now going for $5! Really, as I mentioned to you before, $5 for a record that may be unplayable or not restorable?
There is absolutely no excuse for the prices we are seeing on used vinyl. What is also strange is that I notice the prices on new vinyl have not followed, in other words they have not gone up. Basically, used vinyl in any condition is now the same price as new vinyl.
The Bob Dylan box set price is due to it being out of print and it is unknown if there will be another run - so that example shows us the reason it is $400+ now. So there we have a reason. Do I think $400+ is fair? No and I would not have even paid $110 for such a thing (I like Dylan, but I'm not a big enough fan to justify it), but it is what it is. The "Out of print" thing is the factor. I have CDs that I paid $12 for that are now out of print and you will not find one of them less than $200! IF they ever do another run of that box set, the price will come down to at least $200 to $250 retail, but if what we are seeing in the used market continues any used copies will be $200 to $250 as well, which would not make any sense.
In the case of Taylor Swift stuff, she is nothing more than a grifter and something else I won't mention. She is not the person she puts on in public, but many are fooled. Of course, she is not unique either, we see examples of this throughout industries, starting with politics. She just happens to be good at it. She tries to have control over every aspect of her job, so the question is: Since Swift claims to have say over ticket prices, merch, and everything but record prices, why does she not speak up and honor her fans? Yeah, we hear about her gifting fans and showing up at weddings or whatever by surprise, but again, that is all smoke and mirrors. If she really cared about her fans and such she would make sure things were set right.
There is precedent: While the band Rush has almost no say in ticket prices, mech prices, etc. They do act on anything urgent as best they can, all it requires is an authorization really. Example: Rush put out their album Vaper Trails and the first huge run had major problems, the mastering was a train wreck and the thing sounded awful in all formats, it was released anyway. The band heard about it and went on to tell the fans what was going on and why it was so bad and all (there were some tragedies and such we learned about), but then they took it to the next level, they went back in with a different mastering engineer and remastered the record and then authorized a distribution of vouchers for all who purchased copies from the original run and set things up with retailers. All one had to do was show the receipt for the album they bought and a shiny new remastered copy was sent to them free of charge! This proved the stories of how Rush treats their fans. They realize that they would not be so well-off today without their fans from small to large. (Yes, I was one who purchased from the bad run and did indeed get a replacement for free via voucher).
As for that particular Swift LP: Swift or any other artist has zero control over prices retailers charge for their records new or used, so we can't blame her on that to be fair. It is the retailer or seller that holds the blame. For that particular LP if it was 7000 copies worldwide that is actually a very low number for global distribution. It is even low for nationwide distribution. Normal nationwide distribution of mass market LPS is in the tens of thousands first run! I have a box set from Mannheim Steamroller that fluxes between $46 and $250 and there were 30,000 of them made and it is long out of print. So by comparison 7000 on a run is very small, especially for global distribution. That said, $700 for any LP by any artist is criminal!
Garth Brooks example: Popularity also has something to do with record prices although it does not explain what we are seeing lately in some cases. For example: Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass LPs, there must be trillions of copies and beyond and up until two months ago you couldn't give them away. Now all of the sudden, they are going for $5 in terrible condition and nearly $10 in decent condition! Sadly, death also has an effect on prices. If Garth Brooks were to die tomorrow that box set would be at least $275 overnight for a while and would come down after two years to three years. I have been waiting for Bowie LPs to come down and they were starting to a few months ago ending up only around $5 to $10 away from what I was willing to pay, but now, good luck finding any Bowie LP for less than $200 used. (Personally, I can't stand what has been passed off as Country over the last 23 years, it is NOT country and I'm not a fan of Brooks of course, so $20 for the box set to me personally is of no interest)
Remember, it is not just Discogs sellers it is record stores and everywhere where we are seeing impossible unjustified pricing of used records all of the sudden. There is NO excuse for it. The prices we are seeing now on used records are not disappointing, we passed that long ago at breakneck speed. What we see now is "Disgusting"!
As for what I think in my collection that everybody should be able to own where the prices are now out of reach or disgusting: Answer: My entire collection of vinyl records qualifies for that (all 750+ or whatever it is)!
What a record is worth on market right now is irrelevant because as soon as one goes to sell it one will be hard pressed at least to get anywhere close to what the value is claimed to be. That $250 record is really worth $5 when one goes to sell it. (I have no concern on this particular aspect personally, since I will never sell any one of my records).

It comes down to simple supply and demand so when the demand is great and the supply is limited the prices go up. A perfect example is going to be the QR releases of the Steely Dan catalog. The albums are selling for $150 and some people are screaming but with a limited number when they are gone these records are going to quadruple in price wait and see.

Hi Mel - I kind of got turned off by trying the MoFi Michael Jackson Thriller album. I liked the original I have much better. I didn't like how they mixed it and it was inconsistent. Beyond that, you actually hear the tape degradation on some tracks. Idk. I seem to always prefer originals. Same with the Billy Joel albums. I just loved how the engineers did things in the 70's generally. I hear great things about Quality Record pressings/Analogue Productions....need to try more of their stuff:) In fact, they made my calibration record so....lol.

Hello Melinda, just wanted to mention first off I'm back home as of Saturday! I had to pull myself out of the place they had put me but I'm doing so much better being back home.
As for Discogs, It's really becoming something that's no more than a resource for information, prices not included, for me. It seems like there are some great sellers that really do a good job but there are also what I call record scalpers that don't even represent the product correctly or even have it in the right entry and they way, way, way overcharge. I've been waiting for a reply back from a seller on an LP I want to get now since Thursday of last week. I realize we had a holiday weekend and I'm taking all of that into account. But at the same time, it's almost been a full week and I haven't even heard back from them. I will not buy the album if I don't hear from them by tomorrow. I'll move on and find it elsewhere. Things like this are really bringing Discogs down unfortunately. But I think what's hurting it the worst is the people that are just trying to scalp what they are selling and see who will bite. Some of the prices are so far removed from reality that I don't see how they think they could ever sell them. And I hope they don't because that will just make them continue doing it. It's really sad and it's kind of a state of how the world is and has been becoming as of late. I understand wanting to make some money on something you're selling. But what I don't understand is trying to rip people off doing it. It's up to us in the end as to whether or not to buy the product. But it's real disheartening to see something that you would like to buy but you know there's no way you're going to at the price being asked.
One thing I do on Discogs If I see something way overpriced like this is I messaged the seller and offer them a price. Half the time I never hear back from him in the other half they answer back and usually say no but they do offer to lower the price. If they lower it enough then I might take the chance but so far that's only happened once :-)
Good video topic and thanks for posting it. And man it feels good to be back home and able to listen to my vinyl again! I had 22 records waiting on me when I got home from the hospital and enjoying cataloging them and listening to them each day ✔️

If the vinyl market keeps pricing people out, then it will get what it deserves. I love vinyl and collect, also have a channel where I feature and discuss it like you. (I'm at Amity Tracks). But I focus on the music first. If some store or seller wants to be ridiculous with a price then screw them. I'm fine buying something on CD vs be insulted like that. I generally still dig through the used bins and can still find great stuff at reasonable prices.
