According to Wikipedia, the word comes from Latin pītuītārius (“mucous”), from pītuīta (“clammy moisture, phlegm, mucus, slime”), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *peyH- (“to be fat, swell”). Taken as the name for the gland because it was believed that it channeled mucus to the nose

Doctor, could you please share an example for autocrine and paracrine signalling.
Autocrine is like T-cells releasing IL-2 to activate themselves (after they have recognized the antigen). Paracrine is like acetylcholine leaving the neuron to stimulate a skeletal muscle at the neuromuscular junction.
