How To Check Water Heater Temperature

Did you know that if your hot water heater is set above 120 degrees you're likely throwing away money? Most people feel that anything higher is "burning hot". Lower the temperature and your water heater will use less energy to heat and keep your water hot!
Checking the current setting on your water heater is really easy!
1. Locate your current hot water heater temperature control
2. Take note of the current setting
3. Head to the furthest away faucet in your home, and run the hot water for one full minute
4. Fill a glass with hot water
5. Toss a meat thermometer into the glass and take note of the temperature
6. Adjust the hot water heater temperature control up or down as needed to get the temperature to 120 degree Fahrenheit
And that's it! Save yourself some money every month by adjusting your water heater temperature.

OSHA recommends that your water heater be set between 130-140 degrees F to avoid Legionnaire's disease.

When my power bill came for February, it was way, way up. This video was posted a few days later, so I followed the steps and checked the temperature. It was at 124 so I lowered the thermostat a bit. Hopefully that will help a bit. Thanks for the tip.

I wouldn't expect a huge difference in savings per month if your water heater was already close to 120F, but definitely worth a shot! Might be time to clean the refrigerator coils or replace some old lighting!
