Starfield is just the first of their games to have nothing I can give praise to over the others. TES 6 is going to be a nightmare at this rate.
The Bethesda that made Morrowind through Skyrim no longer exists. The Bungie that made Halo CE through Reach doesn’t exist. The Bioware that made the Mass Effect trilogy and Dragon Age Origins doesn’t exist. The Ubisoft that made AC 1 through Black Flag doesn’t exist. This is simply the nature of the video game industry. I'm curious who must have been the other important bethesda developers who made these games. People talk about important Bioware developers leaving the studio, but all we know about Bethesda is Toady Coward and his lies.
Yeah, I think at this point if you're old enough to see the differences. The talent in those days that made those games are likely mostly gone, and in their place are people that have yet to fill those shoes sadly.
But the real Bethesda got back together! Once Lost Games is a new game studio with the original creators of TES and they are making a spiritual successor to daggerfall
Honestly so dumb that this is the secret homeworld of the Varune, yet spacers and pirates are all over it… couldn’t think of anything original to replace those enemies that feel completely out of place? I guess not.
Coulda been an order of zealots that fell outta power who are hostile to all non-Varrune NPCs instead of pirates, but no. Coulda been Varrune on pilgrimage as miscellaneous NPCs instead of Spacers, but no.
They've added 0 content. They polished up stuff that should've been polished when it released. The "bad ending" from patch 7 for example isn't some content that you got for free - it's something you already paid for they just didn't finish that yet. And if every line of dialogue is "content" for you then I don't see why you would not like modern slop. They did not create new characters, classes, subclasses, items, worlds, locations or quests since launch.

Crazy that new vegas took obsidian a year and some(with bethesdas engine!!!) and is considered the best fallout while bethesda takes a decade to create something only to be painfully mid. I 100% lost faith in this company after the release of starfield.
It is time for all of us to admit that Bethesda is Bethesda in name ONLY, not in the original soul, heart, creativity and quality that we once saw from this studio. Time to admit that if we take the name 'Bethesda' away, we have nothing special. Nothing special that could have been created by many, many other studios out there. Time to RIP Bethesda as a AAA studio. And time to sincerely fear for The Elder Scrolls 6 being a mere shadow and insult to the heritage of Skyrim.

The problem with Starfield is that it's such a casualised RPG experience that it tries to do everything to not make the RPG mechanics matter. Couple that with a lackluster story and even less impressive NPCs and you get a recipe for disaster
yes and no. Technically FF 16 is very RPG lite, and yet has an awesome main story, fantastic combat, and no random forced wokeness where it doesnt belong. The one character in the game who is gay doesnt use that as their entire personality, in fact its actually a game of thrones style plot twist over half way into the game that hes gay, and then thats it he says goodbye to his lover and its never brought up again. This is how you make a game inclusive in the correct way. Not the bethesda/ubisoft way where every female except 1 or 2 look non binary/trans.
Casualized? Nah, you are just used to bethesda's high level of complexity. So you think it's normal. Now cyberpunk is stylized Casual rpg garbage. But starfield? The fact you think it's simple shows your ignorance.

I think it's already too late. Back in the days they had no serious competition, so they always got away with modders fixing and improving their games. But nowadays they have a lot of competition, who do the same, but better. And since they have said they stick with their outdated and buggy engine, nothing will change.
It's too late. The people responsible for games like Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 4 are now gone from the company. Starfield is the result of what's left, with only poor leadership to show the way. ES6 will be a disaster.

The fact that the DLC was already announced before the game even released almost proves that this was just a cut faction questline that was not ready in time.
As someone who works in the video game industry, the way I see it is that people who are passionate and skillful don't want to work for these multinational corporations these days when making indie games is easier than ever. You don't need a big team or even a publisher.
I genuinely hate how afraid bethesda is of locking content depending on your decisions and just letting you start a new character to experience new factions. Remember in Morrowind where we also had 3 great houses that represented a playstyle and you were supposed to make an informed decision for yourself what great house you wanted to join (Barring a bug that let you join 2). I hate this idea that bethesda has had for the past 10-15 some odd years where a single character is supposed to be able to complete EVERY quest line, like a barbarian that somehow becomes the arch mage, or a sneaky stealth archer somehow becoming the most honorable warrior in the land without even lifting a sword or an axe, just because Bethesda is SOOO afraid of asking people to start a new game, and forcing everyone to just become a king of all trades, like they did in Fallout 4. Instead of letting people SPECIALIZE. I think it was a MASSIVE missed opportunity to let you do all 3 questlines for the great houses BEFORE making a decision on who to support, and making a big extensive questline for each great house instead of just a few odd jobs.
This is really the point that demonstrates how Bethesda has lost its character as a developer. Gating content based on player decisions is what gave the world stakes. It's proof that the bean counters are in total control of the company. Gating content makes perfect sense to a gamer; it makes no sense to a money-man who is paying a voice actor for lines that 90% of the audience will never hear.
Tbf, maybe 5% of players replay games and 30-40% finish them on average. But I suppose knowing that your choices matter is still fun and helps a game to stick around in people's minds
I would argue that Starfield's combat is its strongest suit. That's not a complement. It's just that the environments, characters, story, writing etc are all so bad that the only thing even SLIGHTLY enjoyable is just shooting stuff.

I'm sorry you had that experience. I would recommend you and anyone else reading this stop buying day 1 or pre-ordering anything. Let's first check if something matches what we want out of a game instead of giving them money upfront. No matter the game, no matter what you like, check first, buy only if it's what you want. You don't need to like what everyone likes (I liked Starfield myself), but let's first look at gameplay and reviews before making a decision. I didn't get the DLC, not just because of the reviews, but because of what I'm seeing on screen, gameplay footage from the DLC doesn't convince me. The only time I got anything day 1 was the Elden Ring DLC and even then it was because I saw 1.5 hours of gameplay before the launch and I liked what I saw. I did not regret that purchase. Gameplay is king for me in deciding. More important than reviews and definitely more important than marketing and PR trailers and presentations designed to hype you. The whole point of dialogue options is to be a smartass, make jokes, be a jerk and have FUN. Bethesda just repeats BORING dialogue. Their writers are so far removed from what gamers want its absurd.
The writing hasn't been strong in twenty years but that's not the core issue. The core issue is Todd Howard's design philosophy. He doesn't want choices to matter nor does he want depth or complexity to their games. Wide as a sea with the depth of a litter box.
@qu1253 - Thank you! You've just put into words why I can't stand their bloated dialogue trees; needless choices that don't amount to anything of lasting significance.

Bethesda is a double-A studio pretending to be a triple-A studio. They don't use game design documents when making games. Anyone who's been in game development knows how that could complicate development. Todd needs to step down. Bethesda either needs to use a different game engine or actually fix the Creation Engine. There's no excuse to rely on modders as heavily as they do.
Hearts of Stone, Blood and Wine, Phantom Liberty, Shadow of the Erdtree, The Ringed City, Old Hunters, Shivering Isles and even DragonBorn all set the bar way way higher for what expansions can be. Pretty sure they were all under £30 too.
I put around 100 hours into the base game of Starfield. That was the point that I gave up completely because I realized I had literally seen absolutely everything the game had to offer 3 or 4 times over and I was sick to death of it. Previous Bethesda games I would log anywhere between 200 to 400 hours before the first DLC even came out and then even more as the DLCs were released. Then later on after I took break from the game I'd start a brand new campaign and spend another 200 hours playing. I had the slightest glimmer of hope for this expansion, now that's gone. RIP Bethesda.
The best part of the game is the ship building but then there's almost no reason to ever engage with it. Literally everything you do in this game is pointless.
Bethesda has this weird thing with creating unlikeable and downright hateful characters, whom you're forced to help. It's almost like they are trying to make the player angry. They are not just annoying, but constantly insults the player for no reason at all. Remember Nazeem? Remember that one light armor trader chick in riften? Yeah. Worse yet, they make likeable characters like Paarthunax to become targets to kill. Bethesda writing style is basically putting the player as an infuriatingly selfless person, with no moral agency at all. You can help a bunch of criminals, but never destroy or reform them. Feels like i am playing with a slave, i can walk around the plantation, but never decide anything.
I don't think it's a hot take or a mean one to say that Bethesda is a Talentless company... Want good game play? Go play something like Elden ring (Or Ghost of Tsushima)... Want to Explore? Go play No Man Sky... Want a good story? Play Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk... Want good graphics? You know the drill... Bethesda stands out on Nothing.
True. Though the only good thing I could give them is the handcrafted open world (which starfield lacks). But other than that they are shit.. and the lead writer for bethesda doesn't help any.
I agree with most of what you said. Except Elden Ring. I have tried the souls games and Elden Ring. Combat feels really janky to me and the world is confusing and vague. Elden Ring has beautiful world and enemy design though. I am probably of the non popular opinion, but that is my personal take. I think Ghost of Tsushima has way better combat feel.

I don't care how shit Shattered Space is, Bethesda won't die until TES6 comes out and it's just as bad as we all suspect it will be. THEN the spell will finally be broken
I just don’t understand why a game that’s built around restarting and exploring new paths offers so few options to do so. There shouldn’t be any essential NPCs (Immortal npcs), and we should have choices that drastically affect the universe-not just which faction is flying more ships. The DLC offfers two major choices, but one of them forces you to go back on it later, which really annoyed me. All I’m asking for is the freedom to try things out. If my choices lead to catastrophic outcomes, like mass deaths or a ruined universe, that’s fine-I can always move on to the next one and try something else. It feels like Bethesda doesn’t fully understand the potential they have here. A game like this should be about making major mistakes (or intentional ones for fun) and trying again.
That's the part I don't get, they said the first part they designed was the end, which is you going to an alternative universe, but yet nothing seems designed around it? Also from most the writing, it seems like it's multiverse written by people who don't understand the multiverse. The Hunter says you've always died in every universe bar this one, but in the nature of the multiverse, whilst there is infinite universes you die, there will also be infinite universes where you lived. Also every event up to you starting is largely the same? Why not make it so the war before the game had a definitive victor, but it changes in alternative time lines, creating new changes? But then you'd probably need to structure the game around that.

The fact that nothing really carried over annoyed me. Like why would I take the time to build a proper base or design a ship if it's just going to be gone
@kasocool2812 yeah, it'd be cool to skip between dimensions and keep your ship, and maybe get a base in some stable dimension? Not like base building was really useful for anything.
CDPR took their time, listened to the comments and fixed the game. All the comments I've heard during their buggy lunch you can see in the game being addressed. They genuinely wanted to deliver a game and had made a mistake. Bugthesda and shatspace reaffirms that the company was not listening and had no care to try to fix themselves. People see that and reaffirms that statement.
Bethesda still having bugs like this in 2024 is really unacceptable. We used to give them a pass way back because the games were massive open world sandboxes, but now there are many games out that have big open worlds and are not as buggy. It's not an excuse for them anymore.
The fact that consequences don’t mean anything in this (sci-fi RPG) , I pledged myself to house Va’Ruun, got serpents embrace and all! I went to MARRY andreja after and she says I’m not house Va’Ruun so we can’t marry according to their culture?! So the whole perk means nothing. What a disappointment and a missed opportunity! It would’ve been better if you just could go to dazra and live or marry there. Also they should’ve added a new ending. One that actually “ends” the game by staying in the same universe and not forcing you to go through unity.
Bethesda has been dead for ages. Releasing Skyrim 3 times without fixing bugs but selling us back our mods. Dunno but these guys have no ambition or standards anymore ...
They don't really need to have standards as long as they are profitable. I've not bought any product of theirs since Fallout 4 and I somewhat regret that, if it weren't for high quality mods based on it. They get criticised, they receive hate, but if they still make money, they don't care. They'll re-re-re-release Skyrim in 3 years for some reason with a tiny questline or feature added yet all of the old bugs fans already patched out in 2011 still firmly in place, as long as people will buy it. That's the only thing they care about.
My question is how could you give starfield a 6 at all? I dont like how we're in an era where we cant say somethings lower than a 5, starfield is like a 2 at best from an objective standpoint, buggy, boring, bad story, bad world, bad combat, but its still above average for you???
Have you only played 2 games in your life, or just don't know what average is? Theres literally thousands and thousands of King Kongs and Gollums I'm also not sure you understand what objective means either
Bethesda has too many junior level employees, the old talent is mostly gone and the recently appointed executives are almost all marketing and financial experts (the people making the most money for the company are the most likely to get promoted). They have slowly doomed themselves.
I feel the opposite, to many old people in high positions who just stagnated skill wise, or actually weren't that good in the first place. And now they have majority control over the projects, and are just crashing them I to mediocre writing and designs.
The sad part is that Bethesda gets a lot of things right, but it’s clear they overestimated their ability to see the project through to its full potential.
Bugthesda hyped the game and did not even look to fix the technical limitations plaguing the game. Crashes? Check. Constant loading screens? Check. Bland environments? Check. Non-existing exploration? Check. Terrible characters? Check. What on earth were they thinking? A failure on so many levels. And this is from a guy who loves space games. Bethesda should do us all a favor and shut down Concord style.
We wanted Far Harbor, but we got Automatron but worse. It’s a joke. At least the armor looks better than the base game, but Bethesda STILL does not understand the concept of rewards, loot, etc… FALLOUT 76 does it better than Starfield in my opinion. There is no incentive to go out and explore in Starfield, and the loot is not worth chasing. My last point is that the RPG mechanics are shallow. Extremely shallow. They make you join a cult at the beginning of the expansion. If you want to take a companion with you, you HAVE to be a good guy. There is no actual choice, unless you roam solo, which is what I do now because the companion’s morality is horrible in this game (as in there is no variation between companions), and you’re forced to join and help people that you don’t like.
I remember the long video that Bethesda did about the launch of Starfield, the different teams bringing their 'expertise' etc. What I see is what they showed us, compartmentalised and made by committee, neither of which works and it's obvious. People doing things like writing when they are not writers.
I was kinda hoping Shattered Space was going to expand on what we saw in the Entangled mission, which is one of my favorite quests I've ever experienced in a Bethesda game. It was so cool. Shattered Space wasn't bad (I liked Starfield, mostly because I'm an extreme space nerd) but I completely understand why people are mixed with it.
So they basically think this Expansion is worth 5 dollars an hour for their troubles? Half the game cost for 6 hours of content? Wow. Can't wait to see how the fumble, turnover, and lose the game with the newest Elder Scrolls (Although I find it more likely they will make Skyrim again for the PS6 and XBox Social Security Unit PartB Plan X Mod 360x10-To-The-Moon Edition before they release ES6).
What you say at 6:05 is literally my entire opinion of the game, completed it, not because I was invested in the characters or the story, but because I felt obligated to, because I wasted the money.

Nothing. No reaction.
You don't even need the Cyberpunk comparison for Starfield's combat, just look at Fallout 4 (and 76) as many people still play and enjoy those game combat because it is essentially a survival, RPG, looter shooter and there were reasons to get into gunfights, fighting interesting enemies (no enemies in Starfield are memorable or interesting), finding those legendary weapons,..etc. Fallout 4 (and the entire series) also had that satisfying feel of blowing enemies to bits (good shooting feedback), while Starfields shooting feels too clean and generic.
It's always crazy to me whenever people say Starfield has better combat than Fallout 4, at this point i'm convinced they haven't played it since 2015 because it has Starfield beaten on every category. And it's another sign that Bethesda isn't 'stuck' with their games, they are actively getting worse at making them.
@@EatThePath-7 Starfield *IS* worse than Fallout 4, back then they got ID to help them build the combat, it was custom built *FOR* Fallout, *NOT* Starfield. Fallout 4 is another game that falls into the "forget old game, consoom new game" it's also overhated due to YT views and opinion farming (even No Mutants Allowed praised most aspects of it)
Yeah for sure. It's crazy how cutting edge Oblivion was in so many ways and how outclassed and dated Starfield is... Hard to believe it's the same company. I think it's a combination of Todd's hubris and general complacency across the studio in general. I really hope he comes to Jesus before ES6 development gets too far, but the fact is if it's already been started on this stale engine it's going to be a massive dissapointment
14:40 Even at launch Cyberpunk's combat and balancing makes Starfield look like a joke. Yes, even with pre-2.0 Cyberpunk's "Commando" perk that makes you invisible underwater which you can literally never use except for maybe two places in the whole game. Cyberpunk understood that making players sort between 20+ ammo types is stupid. Bethesda should've boiled it down to Light Pistol, Heavy Pistol, Light Rifle, Heavy Rifle, Light Energy, Heavy Energy, Explosive. Not have five types of 20MM XPL Whitehot Caseless whatever the hell for the crappy SMGs that are pointless to use because they do so little damage.

The problem with Starfield is that there are too many major things wrong with Starfield to list in a UA-cam comment.

Microsoft and Zenimax need to step in and clean house at BGS. Elder Scrolls and Fallout are two of the most recognizable and marketable IP's in the industry. Allowing Howard/Lamb/Pagliarulo to continue producing these titles will cost them hundreds of millions of dollars in lost sales because gamers are over this specific brand of mediocrity.

@@c6q3a24 sorry, but that is cope. Fallout 76 released 3 years before Microsoft bought them. Skyrim was a good game but it had less meaningful RPG mechanics than Oblivion. Oblivion had less than Morrowind. Fallout 4 wasn’t as good as Fallout 3 (New Vegas was a better Fallout game than either of them and that was Obsidian).
There’s a clear downward trend years before Microsoft was in the picture.
I still marvel at the lengths Bethesda fanatics go to defend a crappy game like Starfield. It's like you said, they'll find all manners of excuses for the company and Starfield.

Thanks for trying, at least. The game would need a total overhaul by modders to make it a decent game, let alone a good one. Likely would need to strip out all the Starborn space magic nonsense too.
“DLC that feels like it should’ve been in the base game in the first place” is AAA Games 101 these days. It’s not just Bathesda.
This DLC could have been an E-mail.
A $30 for an expansion for a game that went on sale for less then $20 less then a months after launch because it failed so badly is classic Bethesda.

@@jampine8268 It just seems to me like Bethesda aren't up to the task of the project they have set themselves.

Emil Pagliarulo will be the death of Bethsoft.
Bethesda still having bugs like this in 2024 is really unacceptable.
We used to give them a pass way back because the games were massive open world sandboxes, but now there are many games out that have big open worlds and are not as buggy. It's not an excuse for them anymore.
Especially when you play a game of see if you can spot/recreate the same sort of bugs in everything from Fallout 3 onwards. It's surprisingly easy.
*Handcrafted hallway*
So happy to hear people are fucking with Phantom Liberty and not this.
The last nail will be ES6. Everyone who grew up playing the series will come to terms that, just like Blizzard, the best days are behind us.
Why would they when you bought the same game three times?
At 11:45 or so, did you REALLY get a LOADING SCREEN in the middle of a gunfight because of the teleportation gimmick???
My question is how could you give starfield a 6 at all? I dont like how we're in an era where we cant say somethings lower than a 5, starfield is like a 2 at best from an objective standpoint, buggy, boring, bad story, bad world, bad combat, but its still above average for you???
Have you only played 2 games in your life, or just don't know what average is? Theres literally thousands and thousands of King Kongs and Gollums
I'm also not sure you understand what objective means either
To be fair, Bethesda has not dropped a good game in over a decade, anybody could see it was a dead company
Starfield already hasn't aged well 🤧🤮🤒🥳
The sad part is that Bethesda gets a lot of things right, but it’s clear they overestimated their ability to see the project through to its full potential.
I played Elite on a ZX Spectrum on a tiny TV in 1985 (thanks gipgap4) and it was more immersive than Starfield. Seriously.
More like 1985 but I know what you mean!
Bugthesda hyped the game and did not even look to fix the technical limitations plaguing the game. Crashes? Check. Constant loading screens? Check. Bland environments? Check. Non-existing exploration? Check. Terrible characters? Check. What on earth were they thinking?
A failure on so many levels. And this is from a guy who loves space games. Bethesda should do us all a favor and shut down Concord style.
You forgot the npc's that look like fever dreams come to life.
Bethesda are hitting a new low. What a bunch of scammers.
“It just works”
I remember the long video that Bethesda did about the launch of Starfield, the different teams bringing their 'expertise' etc. What I see is what they showed us, compartmentalised and made by committee, neither of which works and it's obvious. People doing things like writing when they are not writers.
That radical change is never happening as long as Emil Pagliarulo still thinks he's a writer of any modicum of competence (and humility).
My favourite part of Bethesda games are how boring they are. That and the loading screens.
ES6 is going to be bad, isn’t it?
I’ve said Starfield is garbage, and people have told me I am playing it wrong…
Dude Bethesda has been dead for awhile now.
After Baldurs Gate 3, I just keep imagining Larian having a crack at making a Fallout game, would be amazing.

Bethesda Game Studios hasn't been doing great since Fallout 3. They have no idea how to make a great RPG anymore.
I have about 10k hours in Fallout 4 and i can safely say this, Starfield's combat _seems_ similar to F4, it feels slightly clunkier, Starfield's combat should be much faster paced, not as cracked as Cyberpunk but close, however that's a whole problem on itself (CE and Beth lazyness).

Yeah for sure. It's crazy how cutting edge Oblivion was in so many ways and how outclassed and dated Starfield is... Hard to believe it's the same company.
Feells like every major developer stagnated because they were still making bank but too much time has past and they are now all repressing. We are now getting games from people who dont play video games
After Fallout 76, I thought maybe Starfield would be a return to form.
