- During a 50,000 km road tour of Australia the film maker encountered 89 year old Helmut. Living alone and remotely for 40 years in a hand-built house on the bed of one of the largest rivers in the country he was wearing only a loin cloth when she arrived unannounced. Helmut's House is a portrait of an original character leading a truly unconventional lifestyle in the wilderness, and a rare document of a unique encounter with a remarkable human being.
Following multiple international festival screenings Helmut's House was awarded the no-budget jury prize at the International Short Film Festival of Hamburg in 2010.
This man is an Australian Icon, like Malcom Douglas. He used to visit Helmut. RIP to both these legends.

This old fella was a bloody legend to endure the county and live where he did but as he said he was home. A tough bloke and lived a wonderful and amazing life
I never met him. My loss. But I know the feelings, and the connection.

What year was this filmed? Because I'm pretty sure it was abandoned when I went there early 2000s books were still there though. Used to fish the river a lot.
Cedar Bay Bill from North Queensland was another bloke who had a similar lifestyle based at Cedar Bay.
