  • Malika Virdi, born in a Punjabi family and brought up in Delhi decided to move to Munsiyari (Uttarakhand) 30 years ago, to live a life close to the land as a farmer. With people desiring to relocate to the mountains now more than ever, I met her with some questions related to this. She shared her story and her learnings with me.
She is in her second term as the sarpanch of the van panchayat and has been an active citizen, vocal about issues concerning ecology and sustainability. She, along with the people of her village, runs a community-owned rural tourism project called The Himalayan Ark www.himalayana.... Alongside, through the local rural women’s collective, Maati, she is committed to working on issues concerning rural mountain women.

its strange people think they need to find the meaning of life when we had those answers all along and we intentionally left them - when people rush after money, greed, are dishonest with each other so someone else ahs to work like a slave, it creates a cycle of rush and anxiety- this is what happened to the west and is creeping in the East- people dont realize it and when they do their lust for money is too strong to leave it and once everyone behaves this way it becomes a part of parcel of society that we can change no more. RIP India that I knew before- no longer the same.

And when I did this as experiment by asking questions in 2005/06, I was amused & sad my prediction came true. So you are not wrong. Acknowledging our follies and what we missed when we went behind education bandwagon, is the 1st step to move towards richer life with connection to real physical world by learning , learning, learning (not in just academic sense alone).

Bacche wali bear ke pass kabhi mat jao wo attack karegi..
Bear tumharey peeche aye to dhalan ke taraf bhago..
March k tym jungle mai ander mat jao ... hibernation break hote he bear bahut hungry hota hai..
Open ground se jana avoid karo, jaha bushes and grass ho waha se jao..
Kyu agar wo tumko dhek bhi le to bushes mai bhag jayega aur open ground Mai usko chupne ko ne melega to wo attack karega..
Bear without reason attack nahi karta..
Bas gana gate huwe jungle jao bear ko sudden encounter pasand nahi..
Wo human voice sun kar bhag jayega..

I found this to be a highly educative string of responses by Malika'ji. Moreover, it is her peaceful, calm, modest demeanour which is subtly infectious as well as convincing.
Only a truly sensitive one can so seamlessly blend back into the natural environment which we have sprouted from.
I am now convinced that the best way to unspoil ourselves is to revert to the basics of life and of living.
    Thank you 🙏

Sometimes a random conversation video is also peaceful and soothing to watch. The lady in the video is smart, experienced, beautiful and courageous. It takes guts to choose a path thats rarely chosen by anyone, specially when neither you or none of the people you know has any knowledge or experience of that route to be taken. ❤

I have seen a lot of similar videos on ppl living in mountains ...and all are very informative discussing the pros and cons ..i love watching them .. bt this video teaches a lot about co existance with the wild and the nature as a whole .. and gives us a broader perspective on what its like living in the mountains actually, the relation of give n take between human and nature etc etc .. very very informative

At 43, very well qualified, having spent my life in cities, and holding high-level corporate roles. I am now returning to my homeland in the Himalayas, the place that my father had to leave because there was no sustainability. It feels like a fulfilling completion of a circle, bringing me immense joy and bliss.

Stumbled upon this gem of a video, reminded me of my hometown in the foothills of Himalayas which sadly, I haven't gone back to in a while! One thing which struck me the most was when she said we should not impinge in their times which is night time and that is why people in the hills sleep early which my body was once used to, unlike now! I also liked the part where she talked about forming a tacit agreement between them and the wildlife respecting each other's time and space. I hope to return to the hills one day and stay. Thanks guys for doing such a good job with the video!

I visited that area last year, the view of the mountains the greenery the hills all was breathtaking. I told my husband I could live there and be very happy. Maybe in the future!! I enjoyed listening to your reasoning on nature and conservation, you are so right, people needs to feel envolved, be convinced they can be part of the solution, that feeling is very empowering it moves peoples minds, rooted beliefs. The world need more individuals like yourself, with your clear view point on every day matters. One who respect nature!! Who wants to live in harmony with it! So proud of this amazing Mind!

By far the best video on UA-cam so far. Lots of respect to the lady. Hope there will be more people like her. For the rest of us let's keep our surroundings clean and plastic free, let's not burn leaves or garbage in the open and stop others from doing it too. Let's buy eco friendly products. Let's carry our own grocery bags, small steel tumblers and our own cutlery when we travel. Let's all do it together and make this earth a better place.
