    This is a beautiful coach built 1969 Mercedes Benz W109 300SEL 6.3 Estate by Crayford. The fastest estate in the world at the time…

    Mercedes did sell estates before the S123. Back in 1965 you could buy the W110 and the W111 Universal in every Mercedes dealership. The cars were made by IMA in Mechelen in Belgium and distributed to customers through the Mercedes dealerships. The 190, 190D, 200, 200D, 230 and the 230S were the models to choose from. Since the W110/111 chassies were dropped in 1968, they made very few of theese cars. Never the less, they were beautiful compared to the coach build brittish 108/109/116/114/115 estate attempts....

      there were also the binz cars. Benzes with ambulance bodies. essentially a station wagon or estate car. Same basic logic though, they were all made by coach builders, not by Daimler Benz.

      But those were all built by external companies/coachbuilders like this one, although with the permission of Mercedes-Benz. The S123 was the first true production estate made by Mercedes.

      By some reason, the Universal was named "Safari" here in Sweden.

    • @W124forever
      @W124forever 2 місяці тому

      Ja, Universal utvecklades på IMA fabriken mellan Philipsson och Mercedes. Philipsson tjatade hål i huvudet på direktörerna i Stuttgart då Mercedes inte hade något att sätta emot Volvo Duett och Amazon kombimodellerna här i Sverige. På prov gjordes då 170 stycken 190/190D av årsmodell 1965 som samtliga skeppades till Sverige och såldes till handelsresande, taxibolag och alla som körde mycket för att utvärderas. Bilarna såldes under namnet Safari men när de väl börjat sälja W110/W111 kombimodellerna hos mercedes återförsäljarna världen över så ändrades namnet till Universal. Bilarna fortsatte säljas som Safari i Sverige till och med årsmodell 1968 då produktionen av fenan lades ned och man lanserade W114/W115.

    I think you’re forgetting that across the pond, Ford and Chevrolet both offered and built their wagons with optional big block power. Hagerty barn finds guy, Tom, has such one, a 1967 Ford wagon with a 428 and four speed, factory built, my guess it is much faster than this. There are also documented BelAir wagons with the 427 engine.
    Both as rare as this beautiful Mercedes! Very nice video.

    I see that the Crayford Cancer is showing beneath the vinyl on the D-pillar!
    Crayford did some interesting work (*some* of it even aesthetically acceptable), but they weren't the greatest on fine metalwork or rustproofing.
    I owned a 1972 (?) Mercedes-Benz W116 280 SE Crayford Estate that had previously belonged to the late (and infamous) Rolf Harris. The Crayford custom work was largely bog (which was by then falling out in huge slabs), and the Crayford welding was something to behold!
    It was one of 16 remaining of 20 built. They all had serious Crayford Cancer.

    Vinyl roofs on wagons look so wrong. That's what woodgrain side paneling is for. And on a coachbuilt one like this scream that it was cheaper than metal finishing the join in the roof (this is why American hearses still have padded vinyl landau tops, they cover an unfinished fiberglass cap).

    For a 5K investment, I'd have thought they'd have (a) not used vinyl to hide the welds and (b) made a smoother transition to the cargo area on the roof. It looks like an add-on tent. Great concept, poor execution IMO.

    If Mercedes still built cars like this, they would have been ahead of Toyota. My grandfather had one and it has never been to the mechanic before. They were over-engineered and reliable. They should have kept these engines and keep improving them just like Toyota does instead of throwing new systems into their cars. Now, Mercedes is just like Fiat

    • @BillLaBrie
      @BillLaBrie 3 місяці тому

      If they still built cars like these they’d be bought out by investors from the Middle East who would cheapen them to be no better than necessary, then float on the reputation of the brand.
      In fact, that’s what happened. It’s been about 30 years now.
