Hope and cancer don't mix. I know from experience. Condolences to John Schneider; he seems like a great guy and he was great in Smallville and Night of the Twisters.
@@encycl07pedia- I agree; the combination of hope and cancer doesn't mix. I can empathize from my own experience as I lost my father, who, by the way, was very stubborn, to cancer about six years ago, give or take a month. His diagnosis came in February, and by December, he had passed away. Despite the complexities in our relationship, marked by unspoken sentiments, such as the fact that he never told me he was proud of me or that he loved me, etc, and moments of difficulty, like when I was fifteen years old I called him to come and pick me up, and was simply told to make my own way home - mind you, I live in the city and I called him from the countryside, so imagine how long it took to get back to the city. Yes! Ryan represents the fans and I really enjoy his input and favorite scenes. I wouldn't mind hearing more from him too ❤❤ when he rates he could explain his perception of the episode more
Well that's obviously true. I didn't even know Lex had a father until this show. He was probably only supposed to be there for the first season but the guy was a god damn revelation as Lionel. Glover was the show's Shakespearian powerhouse that helped it exude gravitas and longevity. Lex is the true villain. Lionel is complicated.
Mmm...really? I agree with Tom, in slow motion you can see both their hands are like an inch away and then a white flash/blur effect wipes out everything so you can't see who actually touches it. Unless you're saying you can see something through the white flash? Anyway, we all know it's Lex from the lore. (Or, even if you somehow didn't know that - the dagger doesn't glow for Lionel when J is about to stab him. Gotta be Lex!)
@@Chimchimchu I mean everyone (even Lex) has a sperm donor/Dad. And Lionel is probably only a father in name only. Because he was not a father to Lex. Lionel was always one of my favorites on the show. His Arc was so interesting, and the way it’s brought to life can only be attributed to the phenomenal acting of John Glover.
🌹 1 rose I think Lex's annoyance is a culmination of things from Clark's lying, investigating his father, but be under no illusions, Lex is also obsessed with the mysteries of the caves, he wanted that artifact which brings us to that great scene at the end when Clark is faced with the realisation of the "friend that becomes the enemy" and indeed it could be Lex. Michael played it so great, it gave me chills. Great little cliffhanger.
I feel like Lex's annoyance level with Clark's bullshit has been steadily rising especially after he starting pursing getting his memory back. When Clark got in his face about the FBI a few weeks back, and then again last episode, he's just like "you obviously lie to me all the time and now you're directly interfering with my life?" Not even trying to hide it anymore. I like the escalation.
Wow, now I am disappointed that John never directed another episode.... This was an amazing episode, thank you all for doing this. I love sharing the Love of SM!!
Pretty fun watching John get that off his chest haha, wow that was quite a grudge. And I can't say I disagree with him if that's really how it went down!
I watch these episodes every week and nobody can take the smile off my face listening to you guys talk about your experiences and share all the behind the scenes little details of what went into making Smallville. Simply awesome!!!
Lex's lines to Clark at the end were a revelation for me as a teen. Michael plays the quintessential Lex in this show, and puts that heavy question to the viewers: Lex - "I know. But if one person could do all that, he would be a formidable enemy. He could conquer the world. He could become a tyrant if nobody kept him in check. So I've been thinking. Anybody who'd be willing to fight him would have to be pretty brave. Clark, did it ever occur to you that maybe the hero of the story... is Sageeth?" Every Luthor interpretation I've seen since I have measured by this question and nearly every "villain" has needed comparable ethos, pathos and logos. Schneider and the writers do you all, and himself a great justice with this episode. ⚘️⚘️🌱 2.5 roses. I consider this an essential Smallville episode.
Whenever Johnathon Kent would talk to Clark I always got a feeling like my own dad was getting ready to give me some words of wisdom. John Schneider really was the perfect actor to play that role. He and Tom always seemed to have a special bond, and it still shows. I grew up with this show (started watching season 1 when I was 11, been rewatching the series about every other year since it ended), and I truly believe that these character relationships shaped my view of family, for the better.
Yeah, it would appear his good direction brought out a superior episode here. Anything before season 4 was still in its probation period, kind of figuring out the perfect recipe.
I love this episode. John did a wonderful job directing. The performances were outstanding. I love the show and the podcast. I am excited about seeing all 10 seasons in this podcast. Great job guys, love you.
It did make it so much better, the red blanket/cape was such a subtle but obvious thing, the blood puddle, the knife almost falling over Lionel and both of them may being Segeeth, we never got more of those small hints or easter eggs as those, with heart and understanding. Which scene is John talking about with having both Lex and Lionel being away? Is it when they're in Belle Reve or in this episode? I didn't even notice, weird that they cared so much.
The man himself!!!! It warms my heart watching y’all interact. The genuine love and respect you have for each other makes my heart sing. You guys are the best! TGFTVW ❤🙏.
YESSS ❤ they are so real. there's such an authenticity to their relationship, true respect and friendship, even enjoy when they bust each other's chops! lol...their dynamic is what keeps me tuning in every week
Love this podcast and y’all. Both John Glover and Tom were ripped in this episode. Using the red towel as foreshadowing in regards to Jonathan giving Clark the red cape was awesome. When Jonathan saved Clark with Jar-el using Jonathan as a vessel was clever. One of my favorites lines was when Jonathan tells Clark that he could either be super or a mild manner guy. That was a clever line. Sam gave such a powerful performance in this episode. You could definitely feel his emotions. I think that Lex grabbed for the dagger first. Lex saying that siegief is the hero and not Aman was such a great turning point. Everyone brought their A game. John Schneider is a class act. Best podcast ever! John should have directed more episodes of Smallville.
I think the guys are underestimating the references the callers pointed out. The sunlight healing Clark idea might've been accidental, but totally valid. The red cape was intentional, and so was "greatest hero" and "mild mannered" obviously. I DEFINITELY agree with the idea that Jeremiah becoming super and losing his glasses is a direct reference, like....what more is there to even say about that, that's what you see when you watch future Superman haha. Especially when Schneider is telling us how he deliberately wanted to put in as many "breadcrumbs" as possible.
Talisman is a good episode that shows us how harmful holding power can be !! 😑❤ John Schneider is an incredible actor as well as a director of this episode !!👍❤ Great TalkVille and fascinating discussion !!❣👍💙❤💖💛💛
I love that the main characters, Clark, Lionel, Lex, and Lana, have dropped almost all pretense at this point. Clark lying about the term paper, and Lex saying, "term paper?", and Lionel and Clark have just flat out admitted that Lionel knows Clark has a secret and Clark has basically admitted that he has a secret. I love Michael and John Glover in this episode.
Ohh this is my favourite TalkVille episode yet! I loved all the deep insights and nuances Tom had noticed for this episode, it was great! And it was awesome to hear from John Schneider again, (I truly hope he is doing well now after everything he has been through). I loved how things like the red blanket and Martha slipping on Clark's blood were John's ideas with his directing. He did a fantastic job given the limitations of time and who he had available to shoot a scene and when. It's bad how they told him he could never direct an episode ever again. I guess if he did direct more he would have had less screen time as Jonathan, but still, they could have at least given him the choice. The different camera angle of Tom's recording space for the part with John took me out a bit, it kinda looked like he was in front of a green screen lol. Also, was Tom starting to feel unwell at the end of the Patreon shoutout as Michael said feel better to him? He didn't seem like he wasn't himself.
The Glasses thing with Jeremiah reminded me of Tobey McGuire in Spiderman when he started as a geek peter parker. But when he got his powers his blurry vision went away. They probably got that notion from the movie as a superhero side affect.
30:31 holy hell, Anette is such a great actress. I just see 1.5 seconds from her reaction and it impacted me as if it's a full scene with the whole package.
Get Well Soon, Tom! Voted For Best Of Season Three, Michael! Great to hear Tom & Michael saying "Naman" & "Sageeth" after all these years again! Glad John Schneider was able to join in as he wanted for his own very special episode! I always appreciate the wisdom shared! Special thanks to Tom for going cap-less during the JS segment!
TGI Wednesday!!!! Johnatan Kent in the house!! Love to see John! He is an amazing actor and did an incredible portrait as Johnatan! What an episode! Love when they us the Smallville own mythology of Naman. Who touches the the palak for the last time!!?!?? Love you guys!!!!
Another great week on Smallville and Talkville it was good to see John and I liked his perspective of the production. I’m glad that Michael offered him support if he needed it and I wish him well for the future❤️
I love that Tom redirected his question back to Ryan after Michael jumped in yet again. Overall I love this podcast but I want to hear more of Tom's insight and everyone get a chance to reflect and talk, not just Michael.
My favorite part of this episode was Lex and Lionel both grabbing the knife, and not knowing who disintegrated it; and then the ending scene where Lex believes ‘HE’ is the true hero. Plus, an amazing job done by everyone; especially with a screwed over budget.
Soon: "I AM THE VILLAIN OF THE STORY." :P I definitely wouldn't have guessed they had less resources for this one (both time, actors and budget apparently). It's pretty effects-heavy and all the effects worked well! Biggest weakness was story, not anything about the production.
A weapon dissolving when a bad guy touches it but more than one touches it leaving the characters confused just fascinates me! I want to see a love triangle version of this! My pitch would be a childhood crush who doesn’t reciprocate the character’s feelings yet and one of the main villains!
John played Jonathan Kent with such such heart and wisdom!! A wonderful father to Clark!! To see his sense of humour with the episode of Clark's training with his heat vision!!😅😊
John is a super talented person! Loved getting to hear from him with y'all! He did a really awesome job with what he had for that episode. On a side note, I just realized the Indiana Jones statue of the cave scene is possibly a perfect statue...since if it gets dusty it just looks even better for that scene...yeah a weird random thought. Its always fun getting these new perspectives from all of you that were involved in the show as well as the behind the scenes stuff going on back then...illuminating.
Loved this episode! I really appreciate getting Ryan more involved, it's a more well rounded dynamic. Plus he came up with a great new shirt idea: "Clark, did it ever occur to you that maybe the hero of the story... is Keith?" LMAO amazing!!!
Loved the Kryptonian/Kawatche lore that was explored in this episode with the starblade. Was also neat to see Clark face off against someone who was granted similar abilities to him, this early in the series. Jonathan healing Clark through Jor-El was an epic moment. And Lex's interpretation of the legend certainly was a rhought provoking one. Being Sageth as the one to keep Naman in check, thus making him the real hero. So glad it's Wednesday.😀❤🙏
Michael! How long are you going to be in denial that Lex has the hots for Lana?? Ha ha. He wants her - otherwise the future romance would never happen.
Absolutely love John, the man was like a TV Dad for me growing up 😭😭 my heart goes out to him and his family, lots of love and many blessings for the future 🙏🏾❤️🫶🏽
This is one of my favorite episodes. It’s so different and fascinating, and there are a lot of key character insights, which I love. John did a fantastic job directing it! And I love that he took the time to intentionally place Easter eggs for the fans. Also, I’m glad he was able to get that off his chest, and I hope is doing ok. 🌹🌹❤️

Since I switched jobs I haven’t had much free time to keep up with you guys !!! I love this podcast and even if a don’t comment about each one I love them all . I Wish you all the best !!! Another great episode. It's always great to hear from John, Tom just gets so excited when he's on. Talisman is of my favorites for the Season, too bad they didn't allow John S to direct anymore episodes, he did such a great job.
Smallville had such a major impact on me when it aired. I was in my late 20s when it started. My youngest is now 15 and shes a huge fan of the super hero and star wars IPs sp I introduced her to Smallville last year and she binged all 10 seasons in a month or 2. I brought me a lot if joy to share it with her before i loose her to boys 😅
I thought this was a great episode. The tension between Clark and Lex, Clark and Lionel, Lex and Lionel and Clark and Jeremiah was awesome because you could feel it. John and Marth trying to protect Clark and Joseph wanting Clark to accept his destiny. Chloe wanting Lana to leave as much as she wants her to stay. Chloe and Pete having tension as well because we don't find out what is going on with Pete. What I didn't think worked was the Pete storyline because it happened too fast. I liked the end, even though we know the answer, that Clark doesn't know who touched the dagger because both Lex and Lionel touched it at the same time. The fight between Jeremiah and Clark was pretty good. Clark using a tree like a bat was awesome. I would give this episode 1 1/2 roses. I thought it was a great John Schneider directed episode. PLEASE SAM JONES, COME ON THE PODCAST!!!
Lex is the nemesis. Sam Jones was the first cast member to get into trouble in real life. They haven't mentioned it, that I can tell. He got arrested for selling very large amounts of prescription pain killers to an undercover cop in Seattle. I would bet that's why he hasn't come on. He's likely gotten razzed for that on the internet, the chat could light up with negative comments. You're familiar with the internet, even though this shouldn't matter, terrible people might rub it in. Although most people around here seem to be very respectful and didn't harsh Alison Mack much for her cult situation.
@@Chimchimchu Sam Jones ran into his legal troubles in 2010, long after he left Smallville. Actually both Tom and Michael had stated, I believe, that there were contract issues and that is why he didn't come back for season 4. As for not coming on Talkville, I'm not sure if either one is in contact with Sam but I'm pretty sure the fans of Smallville would love to see him on the show and that topic probably wouldn't even come up. When it comes to talking about the show and Sam and Allison, the conversation always stays to their performances and never to what was happening in their private lives. I am a little confused as to "Lex is the nemesis" part though.
Really enjoy the director talks more now. Before, the insight was just fun, but after you listen long enough, you start to realize just how much work goes into each episode.
watching this 3 weeks ago and i was like, damn John seems like a great guy, other than his weird reaction to the show-runners not liking his directing style (which is their right as the...show runners) but then i just find out he's making death threats online because of some political delusions... so crazy. this country has so many people claiming to be patriots but just using it to cloak their weird cult of personality.
Coming off such a massive episode with Memoria, I think Schneider did a great job with this episode. Also, having Pete's parents divorcing was such a jab to the end of his character.
Poor John Schneider good on him speaking his peace Pete finally telling Choe 🌹🌹 this was a memorable episode for the added lore great acting so sweet how caring John and Tom are smiling talking that 360 fight in the barn before the stab so cool

His Arc was so interesting, and the way it’s brought to life can only be attributed to the phenomenal acting of John Glover.
lets go talkville! :) great to see John Schneider again in great shape :)
Tom it was really nice seeing you without a ball cap with the interview with John. You’ve got such lovely hair 🧢
🌹 1 rose
I think Lex's annoyance is a culmination of things from Clark's lying, investigating his father, but be under no illusions, Lex is also obsessed with the mysteries of the caves, he wanted that artifact which brings us to that great scene at the end when Clark is faced with the realisation of the "friend that becomes the enemy" and indeed it could be Lex.
Season 4 is my absolute favourite season of Smallville, nearly every episode, that delves into every key character’s further development. 👍🏾💯😁
I love that you touched on John's loss, Michael, and I loved the way you did it. God bless you.
I watch these episodes every week and nobody can take the smile off my face listening to you guys talk about your experiences and share all the behind the scenes little details of what went into making Smallville. Simply awesome!!!
Tom without his hat is a blessing 😍
I love John Schneider!
Lex's lines to Clark at the end were a revelation for me as a teen. Michael plays the quintessential Lex in this show, and puts that heavy question to the viewers:
Lex - "I know. But if one person could do all that, he would be a formidable enemy. He could conquer the world. He could become a tyrant if nobody kept him in check. So I've been thinking. Anybody who'd be willing to fight him would have to be pretty brave. Clark, did it ever occur to you that maybe the hero of the story... is Sageeth?"
Every Luthor interpretation I've seen since I have measured by this question and nearly every "villain" has needed comparable ethos, pathos and logos.
Michael, thanks for listening and adding those shots to visualize when the fans ask questions !!
Always a joy seeing John Schneider! Would have loved to see him direct more episodes, he did such a wonderful job! Great podcast guys! ❤❤❤
This is one episode where I was genuinely worried about Clark. It was a good episode.
As a fan some times actors become larger then life and you forget how human they are. R.I.P. Alicia Allain Schneider.
"Talisman" is one of the best episodes of all time.
Micheal, Tom, And Ryan, keep up the great work!Love the Talkville Podcast!😀👍👍
30:31 holy hell, Anette is such a great actress. I just see 1.5 seconds from her reaction and it impacted me as if it's a full scene with the whole package.
Great to have John come back!!
John has no idea how great his direction was, those scenes he described with the cape and the hallway , the 360 camera, are burned in my memory
It’s always fun seeing Clark go up against a villain as powerful as him
Jeremiah was like: Damn! What's that?
I'm hoping they can get Pete back for the Stride gum episode. We need him and Allison on one episode. Only fair!
I wish they hadn't cut out the little exchange between john and ryan at the end there
My favorite part of this episode was Lex and Lionel both grabbing the knife, and not knowing who disintegrated it; and then the ending scene where Lex believes ‘HE’ is the true hero. Plus, an amazing job done by everyone; especially with a screwed over budget.
Soon: "I AM THE VILLAIN OF THE STORY." :P
I definitely wouldn't have guessed they had less resources for this one (both time, actors and budget apparently).
John spilled some serious tea 🫖
Much love to John Schneider. I know he's hurting and dealing with a lot. He's a legend and one of my childhood heroes. I wish him all the best.
So sorry for your loss John. 🙏
I think it'd be cool if Michael and Tom went to John's studio and shot a movie together.
09:29 "I don't know about you" "But I'm feeling 22" DEAD 😂
John did an awesome job directing this episode!! I loved the red blanket signifying Superman’s cape
That was hard to see John start breaking down about hes wife,I pray he's ok,I got the pleasure of meeting him when I was a kid at car dealership in tenn and he let me sit in a corvette and he was really nice guy I still got the picture we got with him,ill always be a fan of yours tom your a great guy, wish you nothing but the best
I love this episode. Whenever someone asks me about Smallville I always say he hit a guy with a tree. A freakin tree!
In 2001, Jet Li picked up a motorcycle and smacked some guys around with it. I have been a fan of using ludicrously large objects as batons/bats ever since :)
Micheal is coping so hard about him grooming lana on the show lmfao
While the other two enable him haha
John is so awesome. What a great guy. Just really enjoy his character and personality.
Jor-El uses Jonathan Kent as a conduit to heal Clark Kent.
I just heard that Tom Welling will be visiting my city. I need to catch up with all the episodes I haven’t seen . Jajaj!! Since I switched jobs I haven’t had much free time to keep up with you guys !!! I love this podcast and even if a don’t comment about each one I love them all .
I Wish you all the best !!! Greeting from Mexico 🇲🇽!!!
John Schneider lightens up the podcast when he appears, you can really see that on Tom‘s face. Brilliant actor, great director and obviously nice guy.
Yes, Lex touching his face was huge for me. He's finally pissed and tired of Clark's lies, and he's flat out showing it. Great choice by Michael.
Yeah. It sucks that he's a Nazi now. I loved his performance as Jonathan Kent, but man, he's turned into a crazy person.
I rewatched this episode yesterday, but after listening to the interview with John, I need to watch it again.
I love seeing John Schneider on the show! Loved hearing about his vision and process directing this episode.
Coming off such a massive episode with Memoria, I think Schneider did a great job with this episode. Also, having Pete's parents divorcing was such a jab to the end of his character.
Your guest turned out to be less Bo Duke and more David Duke.
i totally watched the scene with the dagger in slow motion too!😀😀
Poor John Schneider good on him speaking his peace Pete finally telling Choe 🌹🌹 this was a memorable episode for the added lore great acting so sweet how caring John and Tom are smiling talking that 360 fight in the barn before the stab so cool
Damn John coming hard !
The cape scene was my favorite of this episode
