Part of what makes Keith such a fun drummer to watch is the huge amount of effort he exerts while creating such delicate, precise ideas. Such passion and energy with those giant arm swings, yet the sticks hit the drums and cymbals lightly, as if slamming on the brakes just before impact. This is drumming at 150%, where the intensity, if not the style, draws parallels with another famous drummer named Keith.
I met Keith when I was a cameraman on The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in NYC some 17 years ago. He was playing with Sting. I was doing the handheld 'drum cam' next to him and was also wearing a Zildjian T-shirt so we inevitably got talking. What a lovely guy. So humble and yet so talented. He'd just done the 'Two Against Nature' album. I was blown away by how good he was. He's up there with Gadd, Vinnie, and of course, Jeff..
The best drummer who emerged in the first decade of 2000 ! He is the New Steve Gadd, in terms of tecnique at the service of music, groove and taste...and not the other way around.
Love Keith!... no doubt.. Just dont understand why Gadd didn't get enough, or any, credit from Fagen in some interviews. Gadd was the most amazing drummer on the original Josie, and Aja. Must have been a disagreement of some kind?
I love watching This guy! Carlock looks so awkward at times, then suddenly he flows like butter.. from the way he tunes his kit to the way he holds a groove, Keith Carlock is a uniquely amazing drummer. .
I've seen Steely Dan probably 10 times, during the mood swings tour Walter Becker who is never one to heap praise said it best when introducing Keith, he said quote "the best fucking drummer on the planet Keith Carlock". Keith literally steals the show from Donald and Walter and I've never seen anyone do that and Donald and Walter never seem to mind.
Saw Keith Last weekend with Steely Dan at the Sony Centre in Toronto....There are not enough superlatives for Keith. He gives me the chills....Incredible...
I had a chance to see them in Columbia, SC at the Township Auditorium a few years back, and it was truly a “Bucket List” experience. Walter was still with us. As a drummer & percussionist, I would’ve loved to have seen the maestro himself (Steve Gadd) on drums. But, watching Keith Carlock and his amazing playing was a true pleasure. Awesome show. He is truly “Steely Dan” worthy...R.I.P. Walter
Mr Carlock is plainly not of this Earth ! What a fantastic and tasteful piece of playing. Have seen him twice in the UK and once at The Beacon Theatre in NYC. Always the same incredibly high standard.
Mr. Keith Carlock is a Drummer in a Class all By his Lonesome. He has a Style of Playing all by his Lonesome, in My Over 40 Years of Playing the Drum's I Have Never Seen a Drummer with his Style of Playing This Instrument.
This was absolutely brilliant. It’s rare you to hear a drummer rock with so much rhythmic syncopation underneath, while still articulating a drum Solo on top AND having the chops to rock it out with nary a missed beat.
Keith is the best drummer out there for creating new ideas and being full of groove. I've met him a few times and was always appreciative of his considerate time and kindness. We can all learn from him... and NOT just drumming. A great guy!
It’s really cool when you know the drummer personally and watched his career evolve all the way to being the full time drummer for Steely Dan! Amazing and Keith is a super guy. His traditional grip is unique if you look closely at his left hand. Keith Carlock !
I just discovered Keith while watching him play live with Steely Dan in NYC. I'm watching this guy with a style all his own, killer left hand with traditional grip, and above average hand speed/chops. I was blown away. I know most of the real good drummers and here is this great drummer I've never heard of. A lot of Gadd influence going on with Keith. What else can I say. He's a joy to listen too!!
First saw and heard Keith in 1993 in local clubs when I was living in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. He was still studying at N. Texas State. He was playing covers (Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears etc) with a bunch of N. Texas state jazz musicians. Was able to see him for about 3 years before I moved away and he got big. But I could tell he was special. He has a very distinct and recognizable (to me) style.
Such a unique style and that's what makes him such a joy to listen to. He loves those flams, who uses flams like him. Love the double ride cymbals and Keith's explosive runs show serious chops. Has Steely Dan ever hired a less than superb drummer.
That's the truth right there. If they're playing with Steely Dan, they have arrived as a drummer IMO. They are a collection of awesome musicians all the way around from the drummers to the backup singers, amazing! I absolutely love Steve Gadd and his touch, dynamics and finesse and Dennis with his unlimited chop vocabulary, both are unbelievable top tier musicians. Keith belongs right there with them, even though he doesn't have the same name recognition. He really has his own thing with the feel he plays with. It's like the emotion of a rock drummer with jazz chops and feels almost like it's all feeling while staying tight in the pocket. Crazy good top tier musicians, all of them. I seen a YT comment the other day that said Steely Dan wasn't all that and that they were played out or over played or something, and I just couldn't understand what they meant. Overplayed on what? I'm an audio engineer and it's almost like an unwritten rule that Aja is such a perfect album from the playing to the production that we all use it as a reference album to tune systems with. When an album is so good that it becomes a benchmark of audio quality, what idiot would say that it's played out? Crazy people. 🤪
Hearing Keith’s recordings for Steely Dan whet my appetite to what a superb drummer he is and his fantastic pocket. To then see him play live with them, just blew me away. Such a unique style and sound, so refreshing and nobody like him. This solo is simply amazing and riveting to watch and listen to.
I've loved this guy's playing since the first time I saw him, but I never had the level of respect I had for him after listening to "Everything Must Go". I just about shit at the level of groove on that record. When I looked up the information and realized it was him playing, he immediately skyrocketed to being one of my top players. The level of creativity he demonstrates through the substantial use of his left foot is incomprehensible to many of today's drummers.
I like his style because it's easy to play, essentialy, but he's mastered it to the point that no one can really mimic him. Not many other drummers have a style that's this unique.
What I like of his soloing is that he always stays musical, rather on the groove side, not a bunch of chops put together just to highlight technical skills (a very common thing - sigh! - among the global drumming community). This is what the greats teach, i.e. fellows like Gadd and Erskine, just to name a couple of "golden boys of groove and taste".
i mean i guess, i just think what you perceive as chops or showing off is just how new music is, the things people like condensed into a different package
+David Curtis I'm not a musician and I just recently discovered that there are two different types of drumming techniques: 1. Cross-handed drummers (like Keith Carlock). 2. Open-handed drummers (like Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band). IMO I think open-handed drummers have a better range of sound and technique, but then again, there are cross-handed drummers like Antonio Sanchez (Pat Metheny Group) who has an incredible sound and incredible technique.
+GREEK HUMMUS Hi Greek, great that you notice both techniques. Both techniques are great just a matter of preference to the individual player. There's players who play both ways example: Dennis Chambers. Another great open-handed player is Billy Cobham. I really enjoy Keith's playing. Keep enjoying music. David Curtis Drumming
This truly depends on what type of music you are playing (Buddy rich referred to Open handed as 'match grip" see video on this.. Some drummers as with Elvis Presley's 70s drummer (forget his name) played both ways all dependent on the song selection it seemed.
Whenever I picture what's going with Keith Carlock this is what comes to mind: A solid string of 16th notes in his mind that he can put anywhere on his body at any given time. His left is ridiculous and fills SO much space....and those rolls are LEGIT!
its basically a continuation of the double stroke roll. He is playing rr ll rr ll rr ll on the snare and when he does the tom hits he replaces the first double with a kick drum so the lick looks like this written out KK RR LL look at a few times with that in mind and it will make sense.
Engineers and producers love guys that are at this level. Seldom is any eq needed, they get such great tone every time because they know where to hit and how much or little velocity is needed at all times. Love Walter bending the snot out of that Sadowsky
as much as i appreciate and respect a good solid drum solo these days with double bass and super fast playing...damn keith is the MAN and its sooo nice seeing.hearing a drum solo like this!
I don't know if you are a drummer, but he actually gets amazing bounce with his sticks. All of his solos are based on double stroke rolls, he has amazing control and his right hand is so loose
Just saw him with The Donald at the The Winery in Saratoga, Cal....wow what a performance by him and the rest of the band. They blew the doors off the place. Unfortunately there are no doors on the place, but if there were doors on the place they'd blow them off
Ya, I thought the same thing. Donny's 71 years old and goes full bore for 2 hours? and that drummer? was that guy incredible or what? non-stop for 2 hours + . I was glad the audience didn't demand more encores because I thought they needed a nap
There is a plethora of Keith Carlock DVD clips on youtube, as well as that of so many other talented drummers. This is a wonderland of learning if you want it.
@SuperAnimalDrummer He definitely deserves it, because being unique in a day and age where there are so many great drummers is truly an accomplishment. His sound and style are unbelievably original and refreshing. Even the way he holds his sticks, the way he tunes his bass drum... it's so different from any other drummer out there. I've never heard anything like it.

he has the same impact on me as does Chris Potter, the amazing saxophonist. THe slow build of beauty.
You don't say
Perfect summary!
This drummer cat is just in a class all by himself. Precision. Passion. Accuracy. Soul. Musicality. Just awesome.

I love this guy's work so much. He oozes groove, it's so natural.
He is absolutely incredible. Simple stickings played at a high level. His ideas are his own. I can listen to him solo all day.

I saw him do that 3 times in 2003
At one of the shows walter turned to him
And said " I couldn't do that in a million years"

Porcaro couldn't even play a solo so he better just stay dead.
Really beautiful. He tells you what’s on his mind every time. Very thoughtful and emotional playing.
This guy has definitely earned the honor. Just about what myself watching this live. RIP Walter Becker.

Wish I had seen/heard him then. There is some footage of him with the 3 O'Clock Lab Band from that era on UA-cam.
I love the sense of achievement and satisfaction you see in his face after that last crash hit.

One of the coolest, most unique styles I've seen
I went to see kieth's clinic in Dublin last year, he was an absolute gentleman, I asked him about "that fill" he tapped it out for me 👍👍😉
Love the signature ending on the snare. A six-burst
I love the jazz/funk/r&b/big band/rock drumming styles all woven together. Absolutely spectacular!
Went to high school with Keith and never heard him play. I missed out.

Fantastic !! Keith is a monster on the kit, and his Yamaha’s sound so great, too. I can’t imagine why he switched brands.
To follow in the grooves of the likes of Gadd and Phillips must be intimidating. he kills it here. Go fella, you rock.
