I mean this with all due respect, for some reason, I feel the audience have no idea how utterly masterful that display of drumming was. The height Keith gets on his sticks (especially with his left hand), and yet he barely touches the small tom-tom (with his left hand) on the downstroke is insane, the fact that he doesn't lose a stick, to me is mind blowing. Couple that with the fact that his grip is so light, I struggle to take it all in and I've watched this video many times. Oh, and I forgot, the solo itself was tasteful to the extreme, story telling at its best.
I’m not quite sure how you can assume that the audience didn’t fully appreciate Keith’s talents by watching this short clip. I was the one who shot this video and had a front row seat. The crowd was mesmerized by Keith and was totally into it. The Jazz Kitchen is a small jazz club and only seats a few hundred people and it was standing room only for these shows. Without too much explanation, the audience totally dug his performance.
One battle I often have with my own playing is the tightness I hold my stick. I'm a rock/fusion player - not jazz. But I see guys like he and Steve Smith with the lightest touches. I'm 54, still gig and try and emulate the holdings and what I think is the lightness and haven't gotten it yet. Guys like Keith are on another planet. It's a privilege to watch and try and learn from them.
@Stevedrums741 You really could change the way you hold your sticks and the way you actually think of the movement of your sticks and the way you play...even at 54. You would have to go through a year or two of practicing at least an hour a day that would require you to become comfortable with a sense of giving up some level of control for a year or so and even be comfortable with dropping your sticks sometimes as your fingers very gradually link up with and REWIRE your brain to hold the sticks with the minimum pressure to keep the sticks in your grasp while allowing full rebound. It is a combo of both mentally & physically switching over your brain to a philosophy of not having control at first in order to be free of tension. It is not giving up ALL tension but giving up unnecessary tension. As you make this very slow transition over a year or two you gain total control like Carlock has.
I think Keith is one of the coolest drummers to ever exist. He just consumes the kit when he plays. Some of the best chops, dynamics, and swing in the business. Love to hear him do his thing.
Such wonderful audio quality - thank you for the video! I so love Keith Carlock. That feel, those ridiculous chops, and his magnificent tuning... That kick drum!
After seeing Keith perform. Many a time at the 55 Bar with Wayne & Tim. From 5 ft away. Since 1997. Keith's got his groove on here like I've never seen. Damn!!
Keith Carlock is truly a special musician. Skill and fluency are at very high levels, incredible. But what strikes me most about such a skilled musician are the taste and timbre and stylistic relevance: usually those who have that kind of dexterity tend to get lost in selfishness. He, on the other hand, is always in focus, always goes deep, digs every single note with the intensity that usually distinguishes those who are good but not as good as he is on the instrument. I don't know if he ever loses a beat, he sure never loses good taste. And in the meantime he charges on a herd of bison.
Stupendously nice Keith. Great playing, silky silky smooth. What a sound he gets out of that kit, bam. That bass drum, killer!! Absolutely world-class this dude. What a left hand.
Yep. Letting the sticks rebound a lot playing rudiments and hybrid rudiments again, with lots of rebound and finger technique, holding the stick very loosely with ONLY enough pressure to keep them from falling out of his hands.
Lost track of Keith for a while stumbled on this and holy shit this is crazy good. I didn't think he could get get much better but now this. Very very impressed my friend. WOW!
The idea and feel carried through 0:55 - 1:10 or so with all those sort of over the bar 32nd notes or whatever it is , is so cool! Such a neat sounding idea and implementation of Carriying a fill groove all over the kit and extending on it that long, and then sort of does the same thing more later on like 2:04 - 2:14 or so… crazy skill this guy has. Thanks for the drumming , and thanks for the video!
I agree! Most drummers' bass drums sounds can be heard when the beater hits the head, but after that the sound gets stuck inside the bass drum and doesn't come out. In other words, you can hear the pulse, but not the resonance. With Keith's Bass Drum, the sound reverberate far beyond where the instrument is placed. I love the sound of not only his Bass Drum, but also his snare and tom-toms.
You should check out Gary Nova's bass drum sound with the late GREAT Chick Corea Elektric Band II. Also James Brown's drummer the legendary Clyde Stubbelfields.
@tommysonnier9848 it really just seems like the most versatile sound, it's open and ringy but still dark if he wants it to be, still punchy if he buries the beater, just deadly.
Always staying in the pocket, letting the sticks rebound a lot and playing rudiments and hybrid rudiments (again), with lots of rebound and finger technique, holding the stick very loosely with ONLY enough pressure to keep them from falling out of his hands. He studied with the great Ed Soph who maybe encouraged him to exploit rebound and finger technique. And Carlock brought those to the next level. Beautiful.
This is what a BASS drum should sound like....no bedroom decor, pillows, blankets, towels, umbrellas, tents, underwear to make the drum resemble a cardboard box.....YES, the bass drum is the largest drum and should sound the biggest.
Gah. Those toms are tuned so perfectly with that bass drum. Just sounds amazing for a Gretsch, which i don't always like. But holy cow does he make them sing. It's like a pair of big ported heads on a chevy small block.
All I got to say is can I have one of those base foot implants please? It's got to be a machine right? His base foot is absolutely amazing! I would love to see Jojo Mayer try this pattern, would he be able to keep it up?
Almost cocked up a few times. Yet....his groove is in a different universe. Would like to see him diversify. As great as he is, it's the same groove every time. Incredible drummer.
What I find distinctive at first glance in his playing form is that both elbows are far away from his body. Not many drummers have this type of form. This is in contrast to, for example, Steve Smith or Jojo Mayer, who keep their elbows close to the body.
So good, it’s like he’s from another planet.
The Greatest Gift a Drummer can have is TIME KEEPING.
The control, sound, and dynamic. WOW
I bought my Brooklyns just because of this guy. That kick...it really sounds like that, too, without the zillion dollar mics.

For me, Keith is like a one man marching band. Keith Carlock creates a new style of drumSolo. WorldClass!
He reminds me of Steve Smith and his traditional style, though he has played matched as a line drummer.
I think Keith is one of the coolest drummers to ever exist. He just consumes the kit when he plays. Some of the best chops, dynamics, and swing in the business. Love to hear him do his thing.
Smooth Excellence !
What a tone kit !
I've never heard of this guy before now that i've seen him he's pretty great.
Keith played with Steely Dan and then with Toto replacing Simon Phillips
Such wonderful audio quality - thank you for the video! I so love Keith Carlock. That feel, those ridiculous chops, and his magnificent tuning... That kick drum!
Considering this is audio from an iPhone, along with my proximity to the stage, it turned out pretty well. Thanks!
@@insidemusicastwhat iPhone model did you use here? I thought this was shot on a pro camera. 😅
@@insidemusicast that bass drum sounds incredible
One of the best …

Insane drumming. Superb drum sound . technique and groove!!!!
Wow! This guy is a machine. And the groove in his left hand alone. Wow!
Absolutely fahkin sick, dude...
Incredible! Out of this world!
A Jackson Pollack masterpiece as backdrop to this masterpiece on drums. Fitting.

How are you? I'm a drummer for a long time and I get cramps in my neck looking up to this man. One of a kind.
'Love when drums actually sound like drums!
wow Keith, amazed!
Stupendously nice Keith. Great playing, silky silky smooth. What a sound he gets out of that kit, bam. That bass drum, killer!! Absolutely world-class this dude. What a left hand.
the first time I saw him at the Montreal drumfest, he blew my mind. I was hypnotized by his solo.
That's some seriously great technique.
Yep. Letting the sticks rebound a lot playing rudiments and hybrid rudiments again, with lots of rebound and finger technique, holding the stick very loosely with ONLY enough pressure to keep them from falling out of his hands.
He makes those drums sing! Melody heaven 🥁 Keith Carlock you are a bloody legend 👍
Perfect and original as always, but now better than ever!
Really cool and grooving solo, awesome sound!
He's up there in the same room as the greatest drummers of all time. Complete machine.
Sa fluidité est extraordinaire, il est sans pareil, Keith Carlook est un phénomène
Keith is like a train rollin down the track that just happens to be a crazy talented musician Wow!
Intense. Not my thing, but I like his passion. Too much “11”. Check out Al Foster for more range and dynamics.
That's a great analogy👍
@@TheEleatic check out Keith on some Steely Dan album tracks like God whacker serious groove master
@@TheEleatic oh and thanks for the Al Foster tip
incredible keith
A truly great drum solo, well worth listening to for a change.

This guy is a BOSS

Keith is something special, man!
Nice solo....great dynamics and interesting rythmic figures kissed by melody. Great Job!
Saw him live at a clinic. Can confirm this is real! Numbs my face everytime.
Love tuned drums!!!
The painting in the background is called “Carlock Solo”, true story.
Jackson parlock 🤓
I think that is Pollock's!
Is it really??? Wait also that’s an actual Jackson pollack painting ? And that’s the actual name off it? !

Love the heavy, urgent bass drum.
The kick-drum from hell.....Monster player.
It's ballastic isn't it, cuts thru
Uncommon skills, love everything he does!
Great drummer this Keith
This man has unlocked the golden secret to tuning a kick drum, best kick sound in drums, period.

Wonderful.
Yes, I did. Awesome in that small venue!
He's got the touch!
Amazing simply amazing!
"fluidity" One of my favorites.
Amazing sound ! I love sound of base drum .
Este tío es un mago.. El rey de la sincopa y los arreglos son increíbles. Es uno de mis baterías favoritos sin duda
This is fire.
heard keith's name for the first time 5 minutes ago, the solo just ended and fuck that's a very good first impression.

@@ivanbajovic3476 and that is what makes the bass drum sound so good.
Yes man that kick sounds incredible
Yes, exactly THIS/THAT!
In your opinion
Check out the high sticking, arrhythmic signatures and absolute ownership of rudimental interplay. His talent would not go unnoticed.

Awesome..ow man...wooo 🔥🔥🔥
Keith plays on the jazz tradition of playing off of what the drums are saying. Like call and response between you and your drums
Se e Loko o batera monstro 👏👏👏👏👏😛
Love it Brother! Looks like College has payed off!
Beautiful sounding kit and snare.
I’m not sure which Gretsch model the rest of the kit is.
Hey Roy! The hoops seems to be diecast, so I would say it is a USA Custom kit.
true genius
Keith is just pretty much untouchable

It would be cool if he hooked up with that Steely Dan. He was the shit way back in '67. This kid's gonna hit it big one day. Lol.
Monster.
He’s fanning the hi-hat, except the hi-hat is the whole drum set.
Hahahaha 2:11

Is the full video available anywhere?
Maybe the greatest...
👌🏽
Yamaha hardware cymbal and snare stand?
Keith’s has taken what Gadd did and turned it up a couple of notches.
The best drum mic is another drum
Anyone got the sticking for the main theme here? Lol
I don’t know where to begin.
It's so freaking gorgeous
Carlock hands tho
When one plays long enough, and I have been at it for over 40 years.... drumming becomes innate.
Doughnuts seem to be the new roll....just sayin! ;-)
New nickname..... QT...... quick twitch
SICK! AF
You really have to have at least tried to play the drums to appreciate what he's doing.
Keith used to be a skinny dude. He needs to take his health more seriously.
