Just like the ladders at Bonneville Dam, McNary, Lower Granite, and all the others. Still awesome to see, I never get tired of seeing this! Just would like to see more fish go up stream to spawn naturally.
Check out the salmon ladder in pitlochry scotland its like a flume and has a glass viewing part where you can watch the salmon the sea trout fly up it in seconds and then theres a giant turbine that spines to make the electric
***** It was serendipity. By chance we were there at the right time and on the right day to see so many salmon climbing the ladder. Really, I did not need to edit much out because every shot was filled with salmon.
I'm not from the West coast and so I'm not familiar with fish ladders but I just wanted to know what "awaiting sacrifice" is. Great video! Are these wild fish returning to spawning grounds?
+Robert George The salmon will be killed in the hatchery. Eggs from females will be mixed with milt from males. The young will be raised at the hatchery until mature enough to be released into the river to head back to the ocean. In a few years they will return to the hatchery guided by smell. So that is what "sacrifice" means.
Sacrifice because Salmon usually die after spawning; they only spawn once in their lifetime. everipedia.org/wiki/Salmon_run/ www.worldatlas.com/articles/amazing-natural-phenomena-the-great-salmon-run.html
The dam creates a lake (Folsom Lake) that supplies water to cities during the long dry summer months. When the dam was built no fish ladder was built with it. Without this fish ladder, and the fish hatchery, there would be very few salmon on the American River.
Spawning salmon's digestive systems shut down when they reach fresh water. They may strike but that is because of their instinct to hunt prey. The US Fish and Wildlife Service notes that spawning salmon do not "eat".
Not to sound Pessimistic....but doesn't this fish ladder have adverse effect on the fish in the long run ? Only the stongest and agile of salmon should make it to there breeding grounds thus helping to create a stronger group of salmon.....this just let's all of them through......they're gonna get lazy !!!
Whoever invented fish ladders is awesome. What seems like an impossible problem( going uphill while underwater) is actually fixed quite easily
Just got to know what a fish ladder looks like. Thanx for sharing the video.

Thanks. I love this video and use it in my class every year.
Kristy McElhinny Thanks for the kind words. I try to educate with my videos.

Very nice video. I was really excited for this runs this year. We had a great number of salmons that came up and a bunch of steely as well.
Might be an Amatuer production, but great to see so many fish doing what they do. Andysfishing

Thank you for sharing that is the best video ever it shows the salmon swimming upstream

Thanks for the support.
This is a lovely video
Well done. Very informative. Thanks for sharing
wow! very nice .............where this place?
At the city of Gold River, California, United States. The river is the American River.
Helping fish for the next generation, that's great.
Do they die because they don't eat in fresh water or they die because of something else?
I do not know what causes salmon to die after breeding. There is new evidence that some salmon ingest salmon eggs while in fresh water.
Why is the river blocked?
The river is blocked to force the salmon to move up the fish ladder to the hatchery.
The dam creates a lake (Folsom Lake) that supplies water to cities during the long dry summer months. When the dam was built no fish ladder was built with it. Without this fish ladder, and the fish hatchery, there would be very few salmon on the American River.
Some of the fish still eat some food when in river to spawn

Great Video!!! I love to see the salmon!! It upsets me that they so patiently await sacrifice!
They are eager to breed. But doing so means they die. "Sacrifice" was my dramatic way of describing that.
Why only 3 of 1000!!
The rest get eaten by various predators.
Brilliant design. Great!
Thank you! Cheers!
amazing!!!!

The way to their spawning streams is blocked by a very high dam across the river that even the most muscular salmon could not jump.
Littlebit more trafic in that ladder than in Finnish blocked rivers :D
that's cool
Thanks for uploading!😇
Awesome 😎
Thanks 🤗
Nice music
finnaly got to see it
please protect our nature and to next generation kids will be happy to see that
My mother was a schoolteacher in nearby fair oaks and would take her class to the nimbus fish hatchery every year.
Is this ordinary in America
In areas where there are salmon runs this occurs.
WE NEEDS SOME OF THIS SALMON
TO MAKE SALMON FORM IN ISLAND OF AMERICAN SAMOA
UP MOUNTAIN LAKE.
Did the salmon died?
Yes. After they lay their eggs, the salmon soon die.
Wowwww

life is beautiful !!!
They returned to match, giving birth and then...... !!!
After laying eggs and fertilizing them in a gravel nest, called spawning, the salmon soon die.
